Writer, Producer, and Filmmaker Nicholas Ma joins us to talk about his latest documentary titled "Leap of Faith". In today's episode we explore the unspoken topics that often divide communities and underscore the universal quest for mutual belonging. The participants in the documentary were invited to meaningful dialogue around race, homelessness, and socioeconomic disparities, but the conversation they returned to over and over again was about sexuality. Even through uncomfortable disagreements, the documentary helps the viewer notice the relevance of love and empathy, the power of small actions to create positive change, and the profound effect of being seen and acknowledged by others.

I like to send my students to talk to Zak and have a chance to listen carefully to how people grow up and what their connection to land is. Zak has a great and complicated history. He clearly tells people how his Christian identity informs who he is as a Palestinian. Dr. Longman has written prolifically about the context of the Old Testament, but this week we get to talk about the Exodus account. Can we read "the simple meaning" of the text? Is this history or is it figurative language? What happens to the rest of our theology if we decide the Exodus is figurative? Overall, I think it is exciting to have a chance to talk about "controversies" while holding space for others and still having one's own thoughts.

Can we read "the simple meaning" of the text? Is it enough to "just have the Bible" and not take the time to dig deeper in the ancient Near Eastern text? Plus, the New Testament mentions figures like Adam and Eve, so is that proof of the literal first humans?

He writes epic fantasy and science fiction inspired by Slavic fairy tales. Why? Because, as he says, fairy tales, particularly Russian fairy tales, have profound, even spiritual meaning that makes them worth reading again and again.

Dr. Justin Reed teaches at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and is here to talk about his new book The Injustice of Noah's Curse.
