#013 - # 1 Way To Rise Faster In Your Career, Get Caught Doing This...18 Sep 202300:19:51

Reality is not reality. Perception is reality. When it comes

to your career you must always keep this in mind.

In other words, people will create a perception of you, and

it may not be justified or fair in your eyes. They may create a perception

about someone else that may not be justified or fair either.

Have you ever noticed people play favorites with people who

don’t deserve it? Maybe it is your parents with your sibling, or maybe it is a

sports coach, or teacher….or worst of all, your boss. We will all experience

this at one point in our lives.

In life we should not care what other people think. But in

our careers, we should care deeply about what other people think. Because other

people’s perception of us, directly correlates with our value, our

compensation, and position.

Ultimately you cannot control what other people think, BUT

you can influence the heck out of them.

One could teach an entire seminar on the different ways to

do this, but for this blog I want to concentrate on one specifically.

That is, showing up earlier, and leaving later…. than

everyone.

Now, the popular narrative today is “work life balance”.

Which is fine, you can probably adequately do your job within the normal 8am –

5pm window, and then you can enjoy your life.

Do not misconstrue what I am saying, you should enjoy your

life.

But you should also seek any opportunity to separate

yourself from the rest of the pack. There is a MASSIVE opportunity to do so, by

simply being there outside of the normal 8-5 window.

This opportunity is especially available to the young people

out there. Without being married, having children, a mortgage, and all of the

other responsibilities of adulthood in full swing, this is you time to take

advantage of this opportunity!

Most seasoned professionals I speak with have noticed that

new hires today tend to make a habit of showing up late and leaving early. They

think they are fooling someone when they say “there was an accident” on the way

in. Or that they “have a doctor’s appointment”, or “need to take their car to

the shop” or they “have a family event to go to”. At some point the excuses

become too common.

Eventually the truth is that they do not want to work the

full day, they want to come and go as they please because they do not prioritize

their job, the opportunity, or practicing the discipline required to maximize

their production.

That is large in part because they think the job is there to

serve them, instead of them being there to serve the job.

What many of us find hilarious is when these same people who

leave early, stay late, they expect to be compensated for every minute that

they spend past 5pm. Even when they are invited to a networking even with an

open bar!

Let me tell you this…stop seeking immediate compensation for

this time. The compensation will come but will come at a much later date. Think

of it this way, you are making a deposit…an investment that will be cashed in,

at sometime in the future.

When I was 22 years old working in NYC, I made a point of

this. I wanted everyone to know that I would be there when they arrived, and I

would still be there long after they left. Making that a habit helped forge

several relationships that just recently allowed me to cash in on my

investment!

I saw 5:00pm – 10:00pm as my opportunity to knock out any

tedious paperwork that I could not get to during the day and or be proactive on

such tasks that were not “due” but that I knew would be a time suck later.

Most importantly these were tasks that I knew would send

notifications and/or emails to my team. Including my boss. At the time they were

just a Project Manager.

One night around 9:00pm, I was the only person in the

office. Sending out my submittals per usual. I was working at a pace that meant

another email or notification would go out to the team every 5-10 minutes. Steady

from the 4:00pm hour.

My phone rang. It was my project manager. I answered and they

said, “um where are you right now”?

I said, “I am working”.

“Are you seriously still in the office?” they replied. they

knew I was. I suspected that someone had seen me before they left late.

“Yup still here, I just wanted to…” they cut me off.

“Leave, go home. You don’t need to be doing that right now” they

said.

They briefly went on to explain the importance of work life

balance. To which I replied, “I am ok, I don’t have anywhere to be, I want to

get this done and over deliver”.

Right then and there that set a perception. Was I working

hard? Yes. Was I working longer hours than almost everyone? Yes. But what if they

did not catch me? What if he had no idea? What if I made a mistake on something

and they chalked it up to me lacking diligence or being lazy?

Since then, they never had to question my work ethic because

that was a habit that I developed and that they knew they could rely on. More

importantly, my drive to over deliver did not just mean something to me, it

meant something to her. That would only enhance her ability to shine as a

manager. I became a valuable assert to her success. That is where you want to

be!

10+ years later when I need an advocate or a recommendation,

do you think they hesitate to do so on my behalf? Of course not. The only

difference now, is that advocacy is not coming from a project manager, it is

coming from a Vice President. That is where they have ascended to since that

night. That is a delayed return on my investment.

Again, this was a habit. It is important to note, that was

not just a one time occurrence. I did not stay late one time in my life and have

it pay off. This was a habit I developed for YEARS. I would easily put in 60+

hours a week on a regular basis. Again if nothing else, to be caught doing so.

Let me give you another example.

One night, I was doing the same thing, working late in NYC. Late

enough that I thought I started to see ghosts. I saw a conference room light on,

but I could not tell who was in there. Finally, after a few hours it opened. It

was the Chief Operations Officer. On his way out the door he scrunched his

eyebrows and looked up at me.

“Burning the midnight oil, are we?”

“Yes sir, someone has to get things done” I said.

He asked what project I was on and said, “thank you”. I

suspect he did so to ask who I was the following day.

Fast forward 2-years later. I was in an office in Boston

doing the same thing. Working late with one desk light on in an empty office.

It was about 9:00pm. I heard the wood floor creaking like someone was walking

toward me. I assumed it was a cleaner, until I heard a booming voice. There he

was again, the Chief Operations Officer.

“Mr. Eisenhauer are on you nights, or are you always working

this late?”

Again, caught in the act of doing what other people are not

willing to do. Taking advantage of an opportunity to separate myself. To

think…I was only caught because he forgot his coat before he left to take a high-profile

client out to dinner. I did not even know he was in town.

As a result of these occurrences, I always had this man as a

mentor. When other people wished they could get face time with him, let alone

have a positive interaction with him, he would make time for me.

On several occasions he would spend 45 minutes to an hour on

the phone with me, talking me through career options. When he would visit

Boston he would sit down in a conference room with me, and take time out of a

packed schedule, to tell me what he truly thought was best for me. Not

necessarily the company.

I know that my career has risen faster because of these

types of relationships. These relationships that are predicated on a perception

of value that others saw in myself.  I

know that more people at high levels are aware of who I am and the value I

bring, or at least the perception of the value that I bring to the table. I

have been afforded amazing opportunities, far ahead of others at my age because

of it.

It is not a coincidence that I received midyear raises and

bonuses in my early 20s when no other employees did. It is not a coincidence

that I received opportunities to be a leader at an earlier age than other

people did. It is not a coincidence that high level individuals showed

gratitude and genuine interest and investment in the growth of my career. It is

not a coincidence that I was always in the showcase.

I am not saying that you must work your life away in order

to achieve success. I am saying there is an opportunity there to put in the

work, to put in the time, that other people are not willing to do.

Not only is the opportunity easier to take advantage of

early on in your career but the return on that investment will pay out much

higher dividends in the long run.

When it comes to creating a perception of exceptional value

for yourself, 3 things are certain.

1.

Your career will grant you more gratitude, present

you with high profile opportunities, and provide you with a top tier salary…all

far ahead of your peers, far ahead of the average bear.

2.

You will develop long lasting discipline. Your

half speed wil be better than other peoples full speed. You will have more accomplished

by Tuesday than others will all week. In times of crisis or chaos, when others

waver, you will continue to bring value. In other words, your worst day is

still better than most people’s best days. People can count on you.

3.

You will have freedom. Any doubt of the effort

you put in will be eliminated. You will have an autonomy where people are not

looking over your shoulder. Constantly checking in on you, counting the hours

that you are at your desk. Because they know if you need to leave early today,

or took a long lunch break, or had a fun day planned…you will do what ever it

takes to get it done. Even if that means working through the night.

That is how you obtain a career that you can be proud of.

That is how you obtain an upper class lifestyle.

That is how you obtain freedom.

#010 - Is A.I. & 3D Printing Taking Blue Collar Jobs?02 Sep 202300:41:47

Will artificial intelligence and 3D printing replace humans? It is a very valid question! Through out our first 9 episodes we have received thousands of comments and messages regarding A.I.

Some people feel as though this is the answer to the labor gap. Others feel as though they will replace humans entirely, making construction a poor choice for a career. Neither of these appear to be accurate!

Whether you tare thinking about a career in construction or you are already in construction, the implementation of A.I. is something to get excited about!

This should attract a new demographic of young people to the industry. There is no better industry to be at the fore front of technology. Construction is no longer just your "hands on", brute, ultra masculine type of work. There is tremendous opportunity for those who are interested in things like gaming, virtual reality, data analysis, etc. From using data analysis during preconstruction bidding and planning, to 3D design and coordination, to robotic and remote robotic equipment in the field the opportunity to use and develop pioneering technology is unlike any other industry!

It should excited people already in the industry by lightening the load on people's body's and their minds. Jobsites will be safer, run more efficiently, have more complete and coordinated drawing sets, communicate more efficiently, all of which will reduce stress and ENHANCE your work experience.

For decades the construction industry has revolved around people are constantly leveraging liability and risk as a top priority. People have been out there "trying not to lose the game". A.I. will enable the industry to become more proactive, productive, proficient, and PROFITABLE.

Watch this episode and find out how A.I. will enhance your career in construction!

P.S. - If and when artificial intelligence can capture the nuance of construction and replace humans, we as humans are obsolete anyway, and we have MUCH BIGGER PROBLEMS.

#004 - The COLLEGE INVESTMENT, Student Loan & Tuition Vs. Starting Salaries02 Sep 202300:32:26

Before you decide what college you would like attend and before you decide what career you would like to pursue, you must evaluate the cost of the education vs the salary this will enable you to make.

What does a college tuition cost? What will the student loan cost you each month for 30 years until it is paid off? How does the student loan interest rate effect that? What will your monthly budget look like after graduation? Is college the best option, or is a trade a better option?

#005 - 3 Reasons Why Going To College For The Social Aspect Is a BAD Idea31 Aug 202300:17:16

It is funny, more and more people today are questioning the validity of college as a necessity. We all know the reasons why, let’s not go over them here.

Yet many parents still want their children to go to college. Not because of the merit or return on the investment, but because “well I still want them to go for the social aspect”.

We have ALL heard that one, right?

What does that mean?

To “find yourself”?

To learn how to be an adult?

To learn how to socialize with adults?

To cut loose?

To make friends?

To make mistakes?

Or my favorite…for “polish”?

Why? I hope those aren’t the reasons because I could do all of those things for a lot cheaper than a college tuition…but for the heck of it, lets talk about the “social aspect”.

You should be able to find yourself in high school, or at least get an idea. You definitely could if you had the right mentor.

But let’s say you still haven’t found the path you want to take. Would you rather expose yourself to different industries by trying them? Spending time, getting experience, seeing what it was like while making some money? Or would you rather throw tens-of-thousands of dollars at an education, “trying” that out, when it may not even be practical to the industry anyway, only to turn around and decide you want to “try something else”.

“But you are talking about career path, I am talking about being exposed to new people and new ideas”.

Ok, lets address that one. I have met more diverse people in the workforce that I have learned more from then anyone I met in college. Do you know why? Because they have ACTUAL LIFE EXPERIENCE. Not to mention…I don’t know if you have seen a college campus recently, they are not exactly promoting diverse thought like they use to. They are the definition of a monolith.

Let’s move onto “be an adult”, “socialize with adults”, or “polish”. Ask anyone who has been in any industry for a long time. Entry level graduates have worse and worse social skills every year as time goes on. If college is supposed to “socialize you” then they are all failing across the board.

Whether it is verbal communication, writing skills, professional emails, event networking, dinner function etiquette, or even something as simple as dressing the part…college graduates are piss poor across the board.

So much so that young people who do dress and carry themselves professionally stick out so much, that they are sought after and coveted.

The good news is…. there is an opportunity! The bar is low my friends!

Again, being around people with real world experience as early an often as possible is the answer here.

Lastly, lets talk about friends and lifestyle.

If I were to make a list of things, you could do or have in your life that are proven to have a negative affect on your life, they are in abundance in college.

Inconsistent sleep patterns

Excessive drug & alcohol use

Promiscuity

Masturbation

Poor diet

Lack of purpose or even the desire to find one

Living for the moment, short term satisfaction

Group think

Victimhood

Cheating on exams, as a group

Surrounding yourself with people who compete at overindulging in these things instead of making each other better and challenging one another.

I can’t express to you how many people I have removed from my life since college and how I am better for it. Not because they are bad people but because my relationships we based on these things (no not masturbation with friends so get off my back on that one).

People would avoid 8:00am classes and reasons to get up before 10:00am.

People drank every chance they got.

Pizza or donuts after a long night of drinking. We would spend entire days hungover on the couch, eating comfort food, only to sometimes start drinking again.

People would play the victim when a professor or boss at an internship treated us poorly. Scheme with one another to do what ever it took to pass an exam or get a decent grade on a project. Even if it meant bending the rules or cheating as a group.

Many people became reliant on Adderall, percosets or other drugs.

Many people started using drugs like cocaine or oxycontin.

Worst of all, people acted like the purpose in life was to do less, to take it easy, to find our way up the ladder so we could be paid to gold and boat and party with clients.

Many people that I know from college struggle with depression and anxiety. Some have suicidal thoughts. In some instances, they have succumbed to those thoughts or overindulged on drugs.

The people that have moved past the habits from college, and the people from college that are doing the best right now. Those are the people who are becoming the best versions of themselves.

I am not telling you to avoid college...

I am saying when you go to college, go with a purpose, go to work hard, to learn, to test your mind. And most of all be abundantly aware of the temptations, of the indulgence, and statistically what those things do to people. Most importantly, how much better their lives become without them.

#006 - 4 Ways To Enhance Your Career Through Submittals!31 Aug 202300:17:35

Submittals are the single most important project document on a construction project. They also happen to be the project documents that everyone strives…not to do!

The truth is this, submittals are tedious, monotonous, boring, and honestly do not take an incredible amount of experience to do.

That is why this is the MAIN TASK for entry level positions in the architecture, engineering, and construction fields. In the general contracting or subcontracting world, your employer will want this to be one of your main job functions for the first 5-10 years of your career.

Are you excited yet???

Probably not. That is why most interns, co-ops, entry level people look to alleviate themselves of this responsibility as fast as possible. They see this as “bitch work”. They understand the concept, they understand the process, and if this is the bulk do for years on end, they feel like their career is stagnating. They would rather work on something sexier like finances, or staffing, bidding, managing others, or business development.

Thus, they become unhappy, and they feel an impulse to move on.

They are missing the opportunity.

First, submittals are a great way to learn how to build. When you are sending a submittal to the design team, or you are the design team reviewing the submittal you are paying attention to the details of building materials that have always existed, but you did not realize was there.

Doing so will literally teach you the nuts and bolts… how things come together. You will look at the details of everything around you, that you did not even know were there.

Secondly, they teach you how to build a schedule, and prioritize which aspects of the project require focus, right out of the gate.

THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY to become the subject matter expert of your project.

For contractors the Project Managers and project superintendents do not have time to get into the intimate details of the project.

For the design team, they can be busy updating drawings, managing client requests, assisting the contractors address coordination issues that require immediate attention.

In either case you can become the most valuable asset to your team. You can become the person they know they can rely on to keep 99 things moving when they must concentrate on 1. You can be the catalyst by which the entire project continues to move forward.

When your executives and other upper management check in on the project, they will specifically ask your project managers and superintendents what they think of you. This is your opportunity to make sure they can help but tell them how valuable you really are.

These are not the only people your executives will seek out for feedback. They will also ask your clients for feedback. That is the most important feedback!

Typically, weekly meetings are held with the client, contractors, and design team. You never know what questions may be asked in these meetings. Especially from the client...

They are hyper specific, usually about some finish detail that they REALLY care about but is not in the critical path nor does it affect the schedule at that time, yet they expect you to have the answer. Again, the project managers are often distracted by a multitude of “bigger picture” issues. Thus, they do not have the answer.

I have been in this situation many times. It sucks. Knowing you are working yourself to the bone putting out forest fires and still make the client feel like you are inadequate because you don’t have the answer.

Unit another team member speaks up to save the day! Now, that is a sigh of relief…which is GREAT. As a team, the more knowledge you have a s a team, the more competent everyone looks.

There is no better way to gain your team’s respect and appreciation than to step-up and become the expert!

Becoming the expert on the project…. this is your shot to shine in front of the client in meetings.

Lastly…we all wish people know how hard we worked. We wish we were acknowledged for every ounce of blood sweat and tears that went into our work. But people HATE when other people talk about it. It seems like you are either complaining or bragging. Either way, not a good look.

Here is the best part about submittals…When you do submittals, everyone receives a notification!

Every time a submittal is sent to the architect for review, the team gets a notification…every time a submittal is sent to a subcontractor or vendor, the team gets a notification.

This is your opportunity to let people know you are an animal! Make them know that you are the hardest worker in the room. Live in their minds all of the time. Pepper them with notifications. Create the narrative that you are ahead of everyone, and everyone is trying to catch up to you. Everyone owes you information and no one is waiting on you. The pressure is off of you and on everyone else!

THAT is the type of person you want on your team! THAT is the type of person you want leading your company in the future!

#009 - 2 Types Of Construction, What Are They & What Are The Career Opportunities?31 Aug 202300:20:32

What is the difference between core and shell construction versus T.I. construction (tenant improvement). What do those terms mean? Do they pay differently? Is one type of construction a better career path than the other? Does one type of construction pay a better salary? Does either type of construction look better on the resume? Is either better during a recession?

In this episode we cover it all. Like most things in life there are plusses and minuses to both!

#003 - ONLY 17% of Americans Make A $100k Salary, Why Is That?31 Aug 202300:14:40

$100,000 is NOT a lot of money. Yet only 17% of the US population is above that salary benchmark.

The bar is SO LOW for you to obtain a lifestyle that 83% of Americans will never hit. One problem is that people aren’t even looking at the construction or engineering industries as an option!

If you show up, and you care, you will hit that benchmark...and then some!

#008 - 4 Ways To Create Value For Your Career Through RFI's31 Aug 202300:17:05

Submittals are the most important document in construction. But RFI's are the lifeblood of construction.

What is an RFI? An RFI is a "Request For Information". Essentially, a formal way of asking a question.

There can be so much power in the art of asking questions. Asking questions can help you influence people, influence their perspective of you, which helps you sell, helps you manage, and most importantly help you create VALUE FOR OTHERS.

However, you cannot ask questions frivolously or haphazardly. If you do then you could create a negative perception! You could be perceived as lazy, incompetent, or careless. Essentially, a nuisance that no one wants to work with!

Due diligence, did you try to answer it? How could you?

Did you try to come up with suggestions considering costs, schedule, pros/cons?

Did you spoon feed the information to expedite an answer?

Did you put a deadline with a clear impact?

What about answering RFI`s? What about answering questions?

Don’t just answer the question like a politician and consider it closed out. Call for a meeting!

This is another chance to show your value and earn that bonus, raise, or promotion at the end of the year!
