| Comedy 101 in its second session, featuring the Art of Stand-Up: Turning Everyday Struggles into Laughter | 16 Sep 2025 | 00:16:29 | |
Comedy has always been a reflection of real life, and stand-up thrives on that principle. Great comedians often draw from everyday struggles, whether it’s waiting in line, paying bills, or dealing with family quirks. These moments connect deeply with audiences because they are universally relatable. Humor transforms frustration into shared laughter. The art of stand-up begins with observation. A comedian must notice the small absurdities that others overlook. Whether it’s how people behave on public transportation or the chaos of grocery shopping, these observations become the seeds of great jokes. Comedy is built on the idea that truth is funnier than fiction. Timing is everything in comedy. A well-timed pause can turn a good joke into a great one. Comedians often say it’s not just about the punchline, but the rhythm that leads to it. Timing allows the audience to anticipate and then explode with laughter. Stand-up is deeply personal. Many comedians use humor to process their own hardships, from financial struggles to awkward relationships. By putting their vulnerabilities on stage, they create authenticity. Audiences laugh not just at the joke, but at the honesty behind it. Everyday struggles resonate because they are universal. Everyone has faced awkward social moments, stressful workdays, or embarrassing mistakes. Comedy transforms these into something uplifting. Laughter becomes a shared release from life’s pressures. Storytelling plays a vital role in stand-up. A comedian builds tension with detail and then releases it with humor. Stories about childhood, family dinners, or office mishaps become memorable performances. The audience feels drawn into the comedian’s world. Hosted on Acast. | Comedy 101 in its second session, featuring Mr.Bob LeMent as my cohost. | 23 Mar 2025 | 00:23:14
Creating a killer joke is both an art and a science—it’s about timing, wordplay, surprise, and relatability all rolled into one punchline. A great joke often starts with a strong setup that builds anticipation and leads the listener in one direction, only to twist the ending in an unexpected way. Understanding your audience is key; what makes one person laugh might not land with another. Whether you’re playing with puns, observational humor, or satire, the goal is to deliver something clever, sharp, and memorable. Like any craft, writing killer jokes takes practice, a good ear for rhythm, and a fearless sense of play. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. | Comedy 101 in its first season with Mr.Bob LeMent talking about tight five. | 02 Feb 2025 | 00:32:16
In stand-up comedy, a “tight five” refers to a well-rehearsed, polished five-minute set that showcases a comedian’s strongest material. This brief yet impactful performance is essential for comedians looking to make an impression at open mics, auditions, or industry showcases. A tight five is not just about telling jokes—it’s about crafting a seamless, engaging routine that flows naturally from one joke to the next, maximizing laughs while keeping the audience engaged. The best tight fives have a clear beginning, middle, and end, with strong punchlines and smooth transitions that demonstrate a comedian’s style, timing, and comedic voice. Developing a tight five takes time, requiring comedians to test material repeatedly, refine their delivery, and cut anything that doesn’t get consistent laughs. Every second matters, so jokes must be concise and impactful, with minimal filler. Many successful comedians, including those who later become household names, start by perfecting a tight five before expanding into longer sets. It serves as a foundation for their career, helping them land gigs, impress talent scouts, and build confidence on stage. Ultimately, a well-crafted tight five is more than just five minutes of comedy—it’s a comedian’s first step toward mastering their craft and making a lasting impact in the world of stand-up. | Bob LeMent is the new co-host of Comedy 101. | 15 Dec 2024 | 00:29:43
Crowd work in comedy is the art of engaging directly with the audience during a performance, creating a spontaneous and interactive experience. Unlike scripted material, crowd work relies on quick wit, improvisation, and a deep understanding of human behavior to generate humor in the moment. Comedians may ask questions, react to audience responses, or cleverly comment on their surroundings, transforming the audience into active participants in the show. This skill can create a unique and memorable performance, as no two shows will be the same. However, successful crowd work requires balance—maintaining respect, reading the room, and keeping the humor inclusive. When done well, it showcases a comedian’s sharp instincts and ability to connect on a personal level. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. | Bob Clement takes the stage in Comedy 101, blending wit and wisdom to turn everyday moments into unforgettable laughs. | 07 Dec 2024 | 00:32:45
A “Rose Battle” is a poetic and verbal contest that flips the traditional notion of a “roast battle” into a celebration of beauty, admiration, and creativity. Instead of cutting insults or sharp wit, participants engage in crafting heartfelt, metaphorical, or even humorous tributes to one another, often inspired by the symbolic elegance of a rose. This imaginative exchange challenges competitors to weave words that uplift, charm, and entertain, showcasing the power of language to spread positivity. In a world often dominated by competition and critique, a Rose Battle stands out as a refreshing reminder of the joy found in kindness, poetic expression, and the art of giving compliments. Matthew Meredith Attorney | CFP® | Wealth Strategist Matt Meredith, Esq., CFP®, is the founder of Meridian Legal Advisors, a next-generation law firm focused on estate planning, tax strategy, and asset protection. With over 15 years of experience, Matt blends legal insight, tax expertise, and investment strategy to create plans that go far beyond traditional, cookie-cutter approaches that stop at the surface. Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles at J.P. Morgan Securities and Capital One Investing, and today, he also manages client investments through his affiliation with LPL Financial. Through Meridian, Matt delivers a one-stop shop by bringing together legal, tax, and financial disciplines under one roof. | (Bonus Episode)Book 101 Review, now in its fifth season, features Leanne Linsky—comedian and entrepreneur, and the Founder/CEO of Plauzzable—as she shares her creative journey, comedic insights, and entrepreneurial vision. | 19 Nov 2025 | 00:28:47
Leanne Linsky Comedian & Entrepreneur (Founder/CEO of Plauzzable) In 2001 I enrolled in my very first comedy class. Five years later, I packed two suitcases and moved to New York to pursue comedy full-time. I performed, produced, and hosted a weekly open mic for over 7 years and produced and hosted a weekly stand-up show in New York’s East Village. I wrote, performed, and produced my critically acclaimed one-woman show in NY, DE, and DC. Eventually, I moved to LA only to find myself spending more time on the freeway than on any stage. I continued to perform and produce weekly shows (and even co-hosted a podcast for a few years!), but getting from show to show was time-consuming. As a performer, I needed more opportunities for a live audience, real-time feedback, and opportunities to earn money doing comedy. In August of 2019 BC (Before COVID), I began experimenting with online open mics using existing technologies. Although many of those same technologies got us through a pandemic, they weren't designed for live entertainment. I went back to school and earned a master's degree in innovation and entrepreneurship to learn how to scale my idea. As soon as I graduated, I was accepted into an incubator and Plauzzable was hatched. More about Plauzzable: Plauzzable is disrupting the fragmented comedy industry for comedians and fans. Plauzzable is a LIVE online comedy club. We provide comedians scheduling tools, virtual stages, ticketing services, and the ability to grow a worldwide fan base. These features give comedians control of their earning opportunities. For fans of comedy we provide access to a global talent pool and more personalized live online show selections and interactions.
