A Heart of Worship (Revisited): Lessons Learned From Mary22 Dec 202200:25:40

It is the week of Christmas!  Join Carrie for this special Bible study coffee break.   In this episode, Carrie digs deep into Luke 1 for an in-depth look at Jesus' mother,  Mary.  Mary had a heart of worship.  Single moms, married moms, young moms, confused moms, scared moms, and homeschooling moms can learn many lessons from Mary that can be applied to motherhood, parenting, and homeschooling.  Carrie looks at Mary's questions, her actions, and her responses and then challenges moms to worship instead whine, to have faith over fear, and to believe instead of doubt.  No matter what impossible situation you may find yourself in this holiday season, God can work miracles.  Pour yourself a holiday latte, get your Bible, listen while you wrap presents, and join Carrie for a little coffee break.

What I Say No To: Permission Granted01 Dec 202200:25:41

You have permission to say NO in December.  If needed, permission is granted to take the day off, the week off, or even the entire month of December off.  It's ok to take time to rest, to celebrate, to clean, to mourn, to just breathe.....  Permission is granted to say NO this holiday season.  Actually, you have permission to say NO to many things while homeschooling.  In this week's episode, Carrie shares the three things she says no to during the holiday season.  If you want to hear Carrie's  general homeschooling "Just Say No" list, then skip right to 22:00.  The things you can say NO to in December are similar to the things you can say NO to each and every day.   Skip the hustle and bustle this holiday season so you can focus on what's truly important at Christmas time.  Pour yourself a cup of coffee and listen to this week's little coffee break while baking a few dozen cookies.

Less is More Curriculum: The High School Years29 Sep 202200:25:55
This week's Coffee With Carrie podcast is Part Two of the "Less is More Curriculum" episode.  This episode focuses on the high school years.   Carrie shares how to make the most of your teen's high school years by doing less in order to accomplish more.  The Less is More "curriculum"  which uses a Christ-centered, literature-based, interest-led, family-style integrated approach, can also be used with your high schooler.  Carrie explains ways to teach core high school subjects simply, inexpensively, and enjoyably and ways to save time teaching everything from Algebra to Biology.  She also reminds moms of what is truly important for teens.

This is one of Carrie's favorite episodes so far!  It's so practical and doable.  If you don't teach high schoolers yet, listen to this week's episode anyway, share it with a friend who is homeschooling a teen, and then save it for the future.  If you didn't listen to Episode # 133 "The Less is More Curriculum," then check it out today.  Pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and join Carrie for a much-needed coffee break.

Are They Doing Enough? The Gift of Boredom08 Sep 202200:27:45

We all ask the questions:  "Are my kids doing enough?  Am I doing enough?"
If your children have opportunities throughout the day to learn, then they will learn.  When homeschooling, students complete formal lessons in a shorter amount of time than students in traditional school.  With so much extra time on their hands, moms begin to self-doubt, and kids begin to complain, "I'm bored."  Embrace the extra free time with open arms.  Boredom is one of the many gifts of homeschooling.  In this week's episode, Carrie shares the benefits of allowing your children to be "bored,"  offers practical tips on how to use boredom as a way to breed creativity, and reassures moms that their children are doing enough (even in their boredom)!  Find some free time, pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and join Carrie for a little coffee break.

Aimee Eucce struggled with severe Dyslexia. She was told she would never read past a sixth-grade level. She hated reading but that all changed in sixth grade.   What happened?  Thanks to Aimee's mom and the reading program, Play 'n Talk,  Aimee was reading and spelling at a college level by grade six.  In this week's episode, Carrie has a conversation with Aimee Euccee, who is now the owner of the company that changed her life.  Aimee shares her personal struggles with dyslexia, her experience homeschooling as a child, and how she uses Play 'n Talk curriculum to teach her own children at home and to teach a new generation of readers.  If you have a struggling reader, a late bloomer, or a child with learning differences, you do not want to miss this episode.  Even if your dyslexic child is all grown up, take a listen.  Amiee's story will encourage you.  Pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and join Carrie and Aimee for a little coffee and conversation.

Grandparents: A Home Education Gift (Updated)21 Nov 202400:13:10

"A grandparent is a little bit parent, a little bit teacher, and little bit best friend." ~ Unknown.
Homeschooling should be done in community.   This includes not only fellow homeschooling moms but family, friends, mentors, teachers, and coaches.  Don't forget to include the grandparents too!  They are truly a gift to your homeschooling.  In this week's Coffee With Carrie episode, Carrie shares the many blessings of inviting grandparents, near and far, to participate in your homeschooling adventure.  She also gives ideas on how to include grandparents in the learning and in the fun whether they live around the corner or 1800 miles away, whether they are spry or need assistance, and whether they support your homeschooling endeavorer or not.   Grandparents- their knowledge, their stories, and their presence- are a treasure trove of goodness for both you and your children.  Pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and join Carrie this week for a little coffee break and walk down memory lane.

Homeschool Family Style: A Conversation With Friends18 Aug 202200:47:42

Are you feeling overwhelmed and outnumbered?  If you are a homeschooling mom of multiple children who are in multiple grade levels with multiple academic needs, you don't want to miss this week's episode.  Carrie sits down with two of her favorite homeschooling friends to talk about how to homeschool family style.

Anita Fischer has been homeschooling her four children since the beginning.  Her eldest graduated last year and is off to college in the fall.  Jessica Pedevillano homeschools her four children ranging in age from a senior in high school to a sixth-grader.  Both have three girls and one boy, both desire to put God first, both have homeschooled independently and through charter schools, and both have figured out simple strategies for teaching multiple children with realistic expectations while still expecting excellence.

Even if you don't homeschool a large family, you will learn much from these two godly women and seasoned homeschooling moms.  Carrie, Anita, and Jessica talk candidly about the blessings and the challenges that come with raising, nurturing, and educating a large family of eating, growing, and learning machines.  It's an episode you don't want to miss, so pour yourself a cup of tea (Anita is British), put your feet up, and join Carrie and her friends for some coffee and conversation.

Simple Homeschool Solutions: Get Loopy!11 Aug 202200:22:57

We are getting loopy this week! Adding a few loops to your schedule will make you loopy with joy!   Do you have a “When we have time, we will get to that” pile?  In all honesty, do you ever really have time to get that pile?  It is time to finally get to that pile without overloading your already busy schedule!

In this week's episode, Carrie shares how to use a loop (or rotating) schedule to easily get to that “When we have time” pile.   Do you want to include subjects like art, music, poetry, Shakespeare, map work, creative writing, or nature studies, but never have the time?  Using a loop schedule will finally help you include in your studies the beautiful things that feed your child’s mind and soul, whatever those subjects might be. And you can add a rotating schedule to your family learning time without any extra planning or stress.

It is BYOC (Bring Your Own Coffee) this week.  Pour yourself a shot of espresso, put your feet up, and come get a little loopy with Carrie this week!

The Great Homeschool Teacher: What's the Secret?14 Jul 202200:21:38

What's her secret?  She is such a great homeschooling mom!  She must have a teaching credential or an education degree.  Being a great home educator has nothing to do with credentials or degrees.  Listen to this week's episode to discover the secret.

Homeschool Epic Fails: Revisited07 Jul 202200:19:31

Instead of sharing what to do when homeschooling, Carrie is sharing what NOT to do!
Carrie is taking a summer Sabbath break to prepare for Season 4 of Coffee With Carrie Homeschool Podcast.  In the next couple of weeks, no new episodes will be dropped, but make sure you check back each week anyway.  Throughout the summer, Carrie will be revisiting a few past episodes.  In this week's episode, Carrie revisits "Epic Fails:  What Not to Do When Homeschooling."  While there are a few things Carrie does regret, she does not regret the following:

  • Spending another hour (or two) outside
  • Playing games all afternoon
  • Baking cookies instead of doing math
  • Reading another chapter (or two)
  • Skipping school to do a beach day
  • Going on field trips with friends
  • Eliminating state and worldly standards
  • Spending the day with grandparents
  • Taking off a week for a Sabbath break
  • Going down rabbit trails (figuratively and literally)
  • Letting the messes go
  • Not knowing all of the answers
  • Putting relationships before academics
  • Asking for forgiveness when I really messed up.

Are you feeling some homeschooling regrets? Then listen (or re-listen) to this week's episode, "Epic Fails:  Revisited".  Pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, get ready to laugh, and join Carrie for a little coffee break.

Start a Homeschool Co-Op09 Jun 202200:21:52

Starting a homeschool co-op is easier than you think!  In this week's episode, Carrie talks about homeschool co-ops and then explains these seven easy steps to starting one:

  1. Set a purpose for your group.
  2. Find like-minded friends to join you.
  3. Decide on the format and location.
  4. Figure out the costs.
  5. Discuss the roles of each mom and the expectations of the group.

Don't Do School At Home: Deschooling, Unschooling, & Nonschooling02 Jun 202200:26:22
  • What is deschooling, when is it needed, and who should do it?
  • What is really at the heart of unschooling and by definition, isn't anyone who homeschools  an "unschooler"?
  • What exactly is nonschooling?  Simply put, it is not  doing school at home.

Nonschooling is living out Mark Twain's description of  education:  "Never let schooling get in the way of your education."  Don't let the terms deschooling, unschooling, nonschooling and even sabbath schooling scare you.  Even if you have been homeschooling for years, it might be time for some deschooling.  If you and/or your child are burnt out and stressed out, it might be a good time to unschool for a season.  Whether you are a classical home educator, Charlotte Mason purist, or anything in between, it is always best to NON School.

In this episode, Carrie shares the importance of not doing school at home and the benefits and blessing of not modeling your homeschooling after the traditional classroom.  If you are new to homeschooling, this week's episode is a must listen!  Even the most seasoned homeschooling mom should listen to this week's episode.  Every season of homeschooling comes with its own set of challenges.   There are many little nuggets of truth for you to apply.  Pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and join Carrie for a little coffee break.

For more information on how to not do school at home, read Carrie's homeschooling book, Just Breathe (and Take a Sip of Coffee):  Homeschool in Step with God), visit Amazon.com

Home Education: A Delightful & Nourishing Feast26 May 202200:17:33

The British educator, Charlotte Mason, described home education as the act of spreading an abundant and delicate feast for our children to feed on and then allowing each child to assimilate what he or she canDon't be the school lunch lady who serves dry, bland textbooks every day.  Instead, don a chef's hat and prepare a feast of ideas, living books, and beautiful things.  In this week's episode, Carrie shares ideas on why and how to prepare and present a feast of delightful and nourishing homeschooling lessons that will whet your child's appetite for good, lovely, and praiseworthy things.  You don't have to be a Charlotte Mason purist to incorporate these ideas into your homeschooling.  Pour yourself a cup of tea or at least a dirty chia (after all Charlotte Mason was British) and join Carrie for this little coffee break.

The Art of Language: Tips for Teaching High School English05 May 202200:30:54

There is so much more to high school English than reading Dickens and writing essays.  Planning your teen's four years of English can be easy and enjoyable if you change your perspective.  Do you want your high schooler to complete English "standards" or to master the art of language?  Change your question from, "What skills and topics need to be covered in order to get high school English credit?" to "What needs to be experienced in order to effectively communicate  ideas both in words and writing?"  In this week's episode, Carrie shares the different ways your teen can approach high school English:

  • Traditional textbook approach consisting of  American Lit and  British Lit
  • Dual Enrollment Programs at the local community college
  • A year of composition and creative writing
  • A year of reading different genres and/or authors
  • A year of poetry and/or Shakespeare
  • Prep work for Composition and/or Literature CLEP and AP tests
  • and more....

While homeschooling the high school years, there are multiple ways to learn the art of language and there is much freedom in how high school English can be covered.  Pour yourself a latte because Carrie will cover a "latte" in this week's episode.

Homeschooling Through Grief28 Apr 202200:25:51

Losing a loved one is hard.  Parenting and homeschooling after a death or after a loss in the family is extremely hard.  Death, sickness, separation, and sadness are all part of this fallen world.  How do we help our children?  How do we "move on"?  How do we nurture and educate our children while mourning?  In this week's episode, Carrie shares some of the lessons she has learned over the years on how to homeschool through grief.  It is a topic we don't really like to talk about, but it is a topic that hits close to home for many moms, especially after the past two years.    Grief doesn't end but it does change.  Homeschooling through grief doesn't stop but it does look different (at least for a while).  Pour yourself your favorite cup of Joe, wrap yourself in your favorite blanket, and join Carrie for this very  different yet important episode.

The Road To Reading31 Mar 202200:24:43

For some children, the road to reading can be a smooth fast track.  For many, it is a road with a few bumps here and there, and for some, it can be a slow meandering road trip that takes many, many detours along the way.  If you are new to homeschooling or your student struggles, teaching your child to read can feel like an overwhelming or daunting task, but it doesn't have to be.  In this week's episode, Carrie shares three simple components to helping your child get on this road to reading as well as time-tested (and research-based) lesson planning tips, resource recommendations, and engaging activities to use.  This episode is perfect for moms with younger students, late bloomers, and struggling readers.  If you already have a house full of independent readers, listen anyway and come back in a few weeks for how to plan and teach high school literature and composition.  Pour yourself a cup, put your feet up,  and join Carrie for this little coffee break!  Just breathe.....Your child will learn to read.

Home School Hindsight: Revisited24 Mar 202200:15:39

There are two months left of this school year.  As you move into the homestretch, try to figure out what needs to take priority in order to end this year strong.  This week, Carrie is revisiting one of her favorite episodes, "Home School Hindsight."  Even if you listened to this episode last year at this time, make this week's episode a priority.  It will be the best 15 fifteen minutes of homeschooling advice you will receive.  If you heard it already, it will be the  reminder you need right now!  Pour yourself a cup of coffee.  Leave your guilt, worries, and stress in the other room, and then turn on  "Home School Hindsight."  Carrie shares advice she would have given her younger (and more energetic) self 20 years ago when she started this homeschooling journey.  Whether you are just starting out, in the middle of your homeschooling journey, or almost finished, you need to listen to this week's episode and share it  with your homeschooling friends.  Carrie will put your mind at ease and put things into perspective.

Busy and Burdened? Change Your Yoke!17 Mar 202200:15:42

Is your yoke "chafing" and causing bruising? Are you so B.U.S.Y. you are distracted and burdened?  If so, there is a good chance you aren't wearing the correct yoke.  In Matthew 11:28-29, Jesus says, “Come to me and I will give you rest—all of you who work so hard beneath a heavy yoke. Wear my yoke—for it fits perfectly—and let me teach you; for I am gentle and humble, and you shall find rest for your souls; for I give you only light burdens”  (NLT).  In this week's episode, Carrie challenges moms to take a look their B.U.S.Y schedules and to determine whose yoke they are wearing.  This week's coffee date is short and sweet.  Carrie hopes you aren't too B.U.S.Y to listen.  Pour yourself a cup of coffee, try to put your feet up for a few minutes, and Join Carrie for a little break from your busy schedules.

Teachable Moments with Great Books: A Conversation with Millie Florence07 Nov 202400:35:59

Millie Florence, a homeschool graduate, is coming out with another book:  Beyond Mulberry Glen.  Her latest book will be released January 2025 by Sarah Mackenzie's Publishing House, Waxwing Books.  In Carrie's first conversation with Millie, “Another Approach To Writing,” they talked about Millie's love of writing and how she published several books before she graduated high school. That episode is full of advice for aspiring writers (and reluctant writers) and for moms who are looking for different ways to approach writing in their home education.  Make sure you listen to it after you listen to this episode!

In this conversation, Carrie picks Millie's brain on how to use good literature, including her new book, Beyond Mulberry Glen, to teach important life lessons about values, faith, and relationships.  Pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and join Carrie and Millie for a fun conversation about creating teachable moments while reading aloud and starting book clubs with friends.

The "S" Word Homeschoolers Should Be Talking About10 Mar 202200:33:51

This week's Coffee With Carrie Episode addresses the "S" Word.
And no!  It isn't about Socialization.  Most homeschool kids do not have problems in the socialization department.  Instead, Carrie addresses  two "S" words that she feels should get way more attention:  Sabbath Schooling and Simple Homeschooling.  How can moms homeschool in a way that brings glory and honor to God while meeting the needs of their children and doing it without losing their minds the process?  This is where the other two "S" words come in to play.  Moms should not just be surviving this homeschooling journey; they should be thriving and creating lasting connections and making joyful memories.

In this week's coffee break, Carrie talks about resting in the Lord through Sabbath Schooling and gives ideas on how to simplify the homeschooling  process.  Pour yourself a cup of hot coffee, put your feet up, and take a listen while Carrie reads aloud some of her favorite portions of her homeschooling book, Just Breathe (and Take a Sip of Coffee):  Homeschool in Step With God.

Th OG of Homeschooling: A Conversation with Carolyn and Martin Forte03 Mar 202200:43:20

Carrie is so excited to share with you two of her mentors and pillars in the homeschooling community, Carolyn and Martin Forte.  They are the OG of homeschooling in CA.  As homeschool pioneers, they have successfully homeschooled their two daughters and have influenced the direction of the homeschool movement for over 30 years.
In this conversation, Carolyn, Martin, and Carrie discuss:

  • advice for the weary and reluctant homeschoolers
  • encouragement for the seasoned homeschool moms
  • trends in the homeschooling movement (the good, bad, and the ugly!)
  • ways to think outside the box
  • how to educate your own in freedom and for the glory of God
  • and so much more!

Through their involvement with their resource center in Monrovia, CA, their online bookstore, their private satellite program, Excellence in Education, classroom offerings at their Homeschooling Resource Center, their support group and Marty’s extensive involvement with the California statewide homeschool advocacy groups, they have acquired an extensive knowledge base that they share with the homeschool community literally on a daily basis.

You can find them at excellenceineducationhomeschooling.com as well as at their new podcast “Make Education Great Again”, their YouTube channel “Excellence in Education” and their blog “Dr. Homeschool.”  Their specialty areas include out-of-the-box approaches, learning styles, special needs homeschooling, delayed academics, importance of play and my favorite, The Game Curriculum, which they created.

Pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and join me for a little coffee and conversation with the OG's of Homeschooling, Carolyn and Martin Forte.

Mama bears, it you haven't already, it is time to wake up and stand up!  Join the Mama Bear Minivan Caravan and become a Mother Trucker with Carrie.  Inspired by the courage and tenacity of the Canadian truck drivers, parents at school board meetings, and the book, Mama Bear Apologetics, Carrie challenges moms to draw a line in the sand.   The question is: Where is your line?  In this week's episode, Carrie shares reasons and research findings to reject mandates, to resist anti-biblical teachings, and to restore your child's education.  This podcast is for all mama bears, whether you homeschool or not (but after listening to this week's episode, you may decide to bring your kids home and keep them home). Pour yourself a cup of extra strong coffee, tell your friends to listen, and take a little coffee break with Carrie.  And if you are listening while driving, don't forget to "HONK" and wave at a truck driver and fellow minivan driver.

Why We Love Homeschooling: A Conversation with Greta Eskridge10 Feb 202200:36:15

Carrie sits down with one of her favorite authors and fellow homeschooling moms, Greta Eskridge, for a super fun conversation about homeschooling.  Greta is a 2nd generation homeschool mom of four and the author of Adventuring Together: How to Create Connections and Make Lasting Memories with Your Kids and 100 Days of Adventure: Nature Activities, Creative Projects, and Field Trips for Every Season (Release March 29th, 2022).   In this week's episode, Carrie and Greta candidly talk about why they love homeschooling and why they continue to homeschool even through the challenging seasons.  In this conversation, Greta and Carrie talk about:

  • Why they chose to homeschool and why they love it?
  • What their favorite things are about homeschooling?
  • What they find most challenging?
  • What things they like least about homeschooling?
  • When and how they have seen God show up in big and small ways?
  • and so much more!

There's a lot of insight, wisdom, and laughter happening when Carrie and Greta chit chat about their children and their homeschooling.  Pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, get ready to laugh, and join Carrie and Greta for a little coffee break.

The February Wall: What Is It and How To Scale?03 Feb 202200:19:25

It is February, which means if you haven't already yet hit the homeschool "February Wall," you will soon.

During February, the winter blues hit.  The mundane sets in.  The weather prevents much needed sunshine and outdoor activity.  Children get frustrated faster and discouraged easier.  Nothing seems to go right.  Complaining is the norm.  The lessons, laundry, and life pile up with no end in sight.  Moms go into full on panic mode as they look at their school calendar and realize they have so much left to do and with so little time to do it.  It's the season of self doubt and second guessing homeschool decisions.  All of these things usually stack up  in the month of February building a wall that stops even the most seasoned of homeschooling moms in their tracks.  In this week's episode, Carrie honestly talks about this February Wall, what it is, and how to scale it.  Join Carrie for some much-needed encouragement that is needed this time of the school year to get past the February Wall and through the March madness without burning out, stressing out, or checking out.  Pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, dry your tears, and take a little coffee break with Carrie.
