My guest today is Matt Winters who recently changed his niche away from helping gay men go from feeling stuck and lonely to having the authentic connections they want in all areas of life. Now, Matt plans to leverage a career full of experience to help leaders relate to people as humans instead of as simply resources. Matt came to the conversation feeling conflicted and murky and he felt stuck. The two of us started by just questioning the idea that if you are indeed values driven, every aspect of your work must be filled to the brim with purpose. From there, we just explored Matt’s new niche and addressed each fear he had around it. Then, we wrapped things up by identifying three clear steps Matt can take to complete some marketing research and start bringing in new clients. And I’m gonna be honest with you, Laser doesn’t like selling. He’s also not that into a lot of the “coachy” strategies out there.

What are you known for?
When it comes to your work as a coach, how would your audience complete this sentence?
Oh… I know them… they’re the __________________ coach.
That blank… is really important. And if your marketing is at all confusing, you’ll get a different answer to that exercise from every person you ask.
Especially if you have a wide range of expertise.
And, if your audience is confused about what it is you do… they’re going to be confused about whether or not to hire you.
But there’s good news here. And don’t worry… I’m not about to tell you to niche down to only serve millennial college grads who work in advertising and want a new career… or women in their sixties coming out of a divorce who want to lose 20 or more pounds.
That may be your target audience, but it’s not your niche and it won’t be what you’re known for.
What you’re known for is your process. Your signature system. Your unique method.
And when you can communicate your unique method in your marketing, people get it.
Plus, you don’t feel boxed in or like a broken record talking about the same thing over and over again in your marketing.
That’s what Emily Taradash learned in today’s episode. You see, Emily loves to help people in a variety of ways. Whether it’s relationships, confidence, or career, Emily is your coach.
But this variety created confusion for her audience and I worried that folks would assume Emily was just confused.
Which is the opposite of what was really going on for her.
So, she and I let go of the shallow approach to niche and messaging and instead clarified her unique process. Which applies to relationships, confidence and career.
And it’s that process that Emily can be known for. Which gives her freedom to share a wide variety of expertise but link them all back to her clear process.
And just like that… people understand.

My guest today is Li Huo who helps exhausted Health Care Professionals find fulfillment and joyful purpose again in their career so that they can enjoy their lives now instead of waiting until retirement.
So, Li came into our conversation with a big bright idea to offer up one time paid workshops to her audience in order to accomplish three goals:
1: Li’s audience doesn’t really understand coaching, so she wanted to create a way to give them a taste of her work in order to help them see the value through experience.
2: Li likes to mix things up for herself. She’s a transformational coach, so there’s a ton of topics she can help people with. Plus, she likes bringing variety to her work.
3: Li wants to build her list and enroll more clients. What better way to accomplish those goals than to charge for a mini course and then offer a power group as an upsell at the end of the course?

An ebb and a flow. You will enter into big periods of expansion when you put yourself out there in a bigger way, or you launch a course, or hire a team… expansion is all about growing. But there’s an equally essential phase that supports expansion. And that’s containment. If all you do is grow grow grow, you’ll eventually burst.
Containment phases in your business allow you to catch your breath, get your systems in place, and grow internally all in support of the next big expansion period.
There’s value in standing still sometimes.
Which brings me to today’s guest. Carolyn Stein just went through a massive expansion phase in her personal life and what she needed is some time and space for things to settle.
So, her big business goals needed to take a back seat at the moment.

What’s the point?
The online space offers up countless strategies you could implement in your coaching business to bring in more clients.
But what’s the point?
This is a crucial question you must ask yourself before you take on any marketing strategy.
If you don’t, you could end up being really busy… doing a lot of work.. And even generating results.
But those results may not bring you any closer to your big goal if you don’t connect the dots directly between your marketing plan and your business goals.
So… what’s the point?
That’s the question I asked today’s guest, Susanne Dunlap, who’s a novelist and a book coach. Susanne helps writers dig down to find the heart and soul of the story buried in their research, and craft it into a manuscript that will keep readers turning the pages.
So, Susanne came into the conversation with two big goals. Her latest book will be released in August and she wants to use that big event to accomplish two things:
1. Sell books and get more traction for her writing.
2. Attract book coaching clients - who wouldn’t want to work with a book coach who’s actually published several books, right?
But these two goals created confusion and overwhelm for Susanne because she just wanted to do all the things… right away… at the same time.

This might surprise you because we don’t talk about course launching very often on this show, but launching is actually one of my super powers.
But there’s a good reason why this show doesn’t over-emphasize course launches. And that’s because too many experts in the online space tout the myth that anybody can just use your life experience to create a course and once you do… it’ll somehow miraculously just sell and voila… you’ve got a six, seven, even eight figure business on your hands.
There are a lot of steps that must happen in order for your business to reap the benefits of a scaled offering, such as a course — which is why inside The Hive we practice The Ripple Effect System.
But… believe me when I tell you that a successful course launch is indeed in your future.

Today we’re going to talk about scholarships. Let's draw a clear distinction between discounts and scholarships. A while back, inside the Hive, we had a member share that someone requested a scholarship into her program. After a little negotiation back and forth, this coach said yes to the client’s scholarship request. But when we really looked at the circumstance, this client didn’t earn a scholarship, they just got a discount, which is not equitable or sustainable. There's nothing wrong with offering discounts, but don’t confuse them with scholarships. A scholarship is something that is awarded on the basis of merit, achievement or other qualification. Scholarships require structure, clear criteria, intention and an equitable process to evaluate the winners. We need to be thoughtful about when, why and to whom we decide to grant scholarships. So that sets the stage for today’s episode. Dani Abernathy is back and this time, she’s ready to begin the process of rolling out an equitable, sustainable scholarship program. Once your client roster is full and you’ve moved into a launch model with a course or group program, it’s hard to promote your offerings when they’re not actually available.
That’s the issue today’s guest faced. Her name is Sarah Light. She’s the creator of the beautiful yearly planner called Sol Planners. BTW… we’ve linked to her gorgeous planners in the show notes. I have one and it’s so super yummy.
Sarah sells a lot of planners from October to about Mid February. After that, she doesn’t have any offerings… and doesn't want them.
Yet, because her business serves coaches, she gets the importance of list building and engaging your audience. But that’s always felt off because how much can you really talk about planners in June, right?
But the two of us do a pretty good job of creating a year-long marketing plan designed to maintain a solid connection with her audience and build up a ton of anticipation for the glorious day when the next year’s planners drop.
Even though Sarah sells a product and you may be a coach, you likely need a year long marketing plan so that when you do move into a launch or a client surge, your audience is waiting with bated breath to dive in.

There are strategies and tips and all of this talk about how to convert more clients by overcoming their objections.
Here's the problem with that line of thinking, as values driven coaches, we don't want to be against our clients ever. So the idea of overcoming objections feels like coercion, manipulation, or at the very least “me against you”. And that is no way to enroll dream clients.
Inside of Client Surge, as well as in The Hive, we reframe this idea of overcoming objections and instead look at how we can help our clients address concerns. When you're in a sales call, it's so important to use your coaching skills to help your client arrive at an empowered decision about whether or not they want to work with you. We are wrapping up our special list building series today. And I know I’ve been talking a lot about how list building provides every coach and course creator with more options. But it’s also the thing that helps you move beyond relying on referrals to bring in private clients. Which is why today, we’re going to craft a list building strategy with private client attraction in mind. My guest, Michelle Cox, teaches people the learnable skills to embrace their secret dream of writing a book so that they can go from feeling like an imposter with a silly book idea to being an author who did the hard work and wrote a damn good book. Michelle has a very clear vision about where she wants to take her business. That vision looks like: This vision is totally possible for Michelle and for you. But only if you make list building your top priority. Why? Because 1-3% of your list will end up becoming customers. So, if you can’t find customers, it’s probably a sign that list building has fallen to the wayside. Today, Michelle and I craft a simple plan of (boring) habits she can repeat, every week, in order to become more visible and build her list. None of it is complicated or fancy, but it is essential because if Michelle wants to work with 16 clients, she needs a list of 1600 subscribers. We’ve all been there… including my guest, Dani Abernathy who throughout her life has experienced this theme of feeling like an outsider. Dani looked at successful coaches out there and really worried that there was something broken inside her, which prevented her from having success, finding clients, and making money.
So she and I had an honest heart to heart about what success really means to her and how she can rely on two tools to ground herself when she begins to spiral in self-doubt and feelings of other-ness.
The first is simply a physical pattern interrupt, not to distract her from what are very real feelings, but rather to give her a fresh perspective and hopefully reveal more options for how to move forward.
The second is what I’ll call Dani’s Success Plan Litmus Test to help her let go of any judgments or assumptions about why a plan won’t work for her and instead, use her natural skills and resources to make a success plan all her own.

Proving worth instead of providing value.
What does that look like?
Proving worth is self-centered and fear motivated. We get nervous that our clients aren’t making enough progress, so we pile on more tools, more time, more stuff to “help them”. When in fact all that stuff just creates overwhelm and confusion.
Providing value on the other hand is client-focused. We bring our best selves to every client, but we also understand that our #1 job is to hold space and honor each client’s unique journey.
So, Ana and I recalibrated a bit today. We brought her back to the client-centered approach of providing value.
And we did it with one simple question…
“What do you believe in?”
