Finally, Jane is joined by journalist Lyric Aquino to discuss how Twilight fans are helping to support the Quileute tribe, who inspired details for the hit films and now must move their village out of a tsunami zone.

| What It Takes to Raise a Kid in King County Right Now | 16 sept. 2026 | 00:24:15 | |
City Cast Partner Studios presents Weaving Our Future: Stories for a Fair Economy, a five-part series on what a fair economy looks like in King County, told through the people building it.
In this episode of Weaving Our Future: Stories for a Fair Economy, Jane speaks with Tristen Hall, co-lead of the King County Early Learning Coalition, and Carlina Brown-Banks, executive director of Voice2Power Lab and a member of the Be3 Coalition, about why early learning and K-12 education aren't nearly as separate as Washington's funding system treats them. They get into why coalition work can do what no single organization can on its own, the legislative win last year that protected educational rights for students experiencing homelessness after hundreds of people emailed the Senate, and why childcare in Washington eats up something like a third of a family's paycheck. They also talk about what changes when you actually trust that parents already know what their kids need.

A beautiful but deadly beetle has arrived in Washington for the first time, and host Jane C. Hu talks with Daria Gosztyla, an urban and community forestry planner with the Washington Department of Natural Resources, about what the emerald ash borer could mean for Seattle's trees, salmon habitat, and urban ecosystems. But first, Brett Hamil returns to the contributor’s side of the mic along with Eula Scott Bynoe to dig into Seattle Public Schools' new staff contract and recess length, Mayor Wilson's gun violence reduction plan, Macklemore getting dropped from Ed Sheeran's tour for saying "Free Palestine," and the “Seattle Avengers” crashing city council to take on surveillance cameras.

Then, Sam unearths the surprisingly sweet origin story of Seattle's P-Patch community gardens, from a Boeing-bust-era neighbor's idea to 91 gardens donating 41,000 pounds of food a year. | Primary Elections Results So Far, Big Tech Is Hiding AI Debt, and Chief Barnes’ Legacy Reviewed | 06 août 2026 | 00:37:07 | |
Today on the podcast, host Jane C. Hu is joined by independent journalist Erica C. Barnett and tech reporter for the Seattle Times Alex Halverson to break down the three big topics on everyone’s mind: the primary election results, what the heck is going on with AI and big tech, and what is former Police Chief Shon Barnes’ legacy in Seattle? Erica and Jane take a look at the results so far for key races and issues including, the library levy, Sabio-Howell trailing Pederson, Kshama Sawant trailing Adam Smith, and Jenks versus Kang. Alex explains why out-of-state AI companies are contributing to Dreher’s campaign and what it signals about Anthropic and Waymo’s investment in the city. Then, we get into the Q2 earnings for Amazon and Microsoft. Jane asks what the volatility of the tech industry means for Seattle in light of Bloomberg’s reporting that big tech companies are using the same strategy Enron used to hide its debts from investors and lenders to hide debt taken on in building out AI. And finally, Erica walks us through the legacy Shon Barnes leaves behind at the SPD including gender discrimination in hiring, anti-LGBTQ bias, sidelining the CARE department, and more. And she shares what she expects this next hiring process to look like.

| What To Know About the Seattle Center Shooting, SEPA Updates, and Good News When We Need It | 28 juil. 2026 | 00:31:49 | |
Today on the podcast, host Jane C. Hu is joined by contributors Hannah Krieg and Ryan Packer to discuss the shooting that occurred Sunday night at Bite of Seattle at Seattle Center. They talk about what we know, the other shootings that occurred in Seattle over the weekend, but overall their love for the city and how these events are not unique to Seattle. Then they discuss legislation put forward by Eddie Lin that would raise the bar for what qualifies as a valid appeal to legislation that has an environmental review under the State Environmental Policy Act (or SEPA). Ryan explains how appeals could continue to slow the city’s growth plans, like Mayor Wilson’s Taller, Denser, Faster. Finally, the trio discusses good news, from sea animals to those on land. Also: have we reached peak Jimothy?

Adam explains what the millionaires tax has to do with all of this and how a less-than-rosy relationship between the mayor’s office and city council might factor in as well. And Jesse explains why universal school meals ensure everyone’s needs are met. Then, Thorin Klosowski, senior security and privacy activist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, stops by to answer all the digital security questions you've been too embarrassed to ask.
