Your host Jason Drury begins the show with the superb 22-minute "Grand Gothic Suite" by Elliot Goldenthal from the album ELLIOT GOLDENTHAL: MUSIC FOR FILM (Silva Screen Records), containing music from BATMAN FOREVER and BATMAN AND ROBIN. Jason then continues with selections from Nino Rota’s Oscar-winning score from 1974‘s THE GODFATHER PART 2 (La La Land Records) and Jerry Goldsmith’s classic 1976 score for ISLANDS IN THE STREAM, which Intrada Records recently reissued. The wonderful theme from John Barry’s Oscar-winning score from the 1985 film OUT OF AFRICA (Intrada Records) continues the show. This is followed by music from David Fanshawe's score for the 1991 Michael Winner revenge thriller DIRTY WEEKEND (Silva Screen Records) and then music from Don Davis’s score from the 2001 film JURASSIC PARK III (La La Land Records) Jason then rounds off the show by playing more music from the album ELLIOT GOLDENTHAL: MUSIC FOR FILM with another suite, this time from his classic score from 1992‘s ALIEN 3. On today’s program, I’m celebrating the 28th anniversary of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, which began on September 20th, 1996, at CHMR / C101.5 FM at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. The station is now called INDI 101. For all of our anniversary programs, and yes, some years I forget to do one, I try to create something new. Sometimes it's clever, and other times it's just a simple, dumb idea that's relatively simple to implement. This show is the latter. Since the show is now 28 years old, I've decided to base it on that number. So, you'll hear tracks that are either 28 seconds long, scores that are 28 years old, films with the number 28 in the title, the 28th track on the album, take place in 1928, or were written in 1928 featuring composers Mark Snow, John Murphy, Charlie Chaplin, Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman, Terence Blanchard, Joseph Conlon, Marc Sharman, David Arnold and Dominic Frontiere. Admittedly, this is silly, but it was quite enjoyable to put together. Happy National Film Score Day! National Film Score Day was created on April 3rd, 2018 by Jeffrey D. Kern of the defunct internet film music radio station MOVIE SCORES AND MORE RADIO, and is officially recognized by the National Day Calendar. National Film Score Day "was created to celebrate film scores and the talented composers that compose those musical masterworks called film scores!" You can read more about it by CLICKING HERE! We've only officially celebrated National Film Score Day here at CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO once, but I would like for it to be something we here celebrate every April 3rd. We commemorated National Film Score Day with 12 tracks chosen at random on today's special broadcast. I didn't know what I wanted to do to celebrate the occasion, so I decided to do my best to incorporate the number 4 into the festivities, as today is the 4th anniversary of the event! I went into my digital library and made a smart playlist to collect all of the 4-minute cues in my collection. Everything was reduced to 760 as a result of this. I didn't want to waste an entire day trying to choose 12 tracks from that list, so I went to random.org and had them choose the cues for me. Each track was assigned a number and the playlist was arranged alphabetically by title. After that, I began recording and did the random draw "live" therefore I had no idea what I was going to play. That's right folks, the Oscars suck! But we've suspected that for many years now. But this year, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, officially, publicly, declared their show to be an utter joke! Now, they didn't say that directly, but, according to Variety... "Several major Academy Awards will not be presented on the air during this year’s Oscars in an effort to present a more streamlined and television-friendly broadcast. Eight honors will instead be awarded during off-air parts of the show and then edited into the telecast." What are the eight categories that the Academy deemed to be meaningless? "The awards that will be handed out earlier in the ceremony are for documentary short, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live action short and sound. The ceremony will start one hour before the on-camera portion begins in order to accommodate the changes." And there you have it... proof that the Academy has NEVER cared about secondary categories. They don't even pay attention to them. Do you REALLY think a major producer or actor is sitting at home pondering who they'll pick for the best animated short film? Of course not! It's a popularity contest. The flavour of the month! It's farse! So, yes, the Oscars officially suck! As a result, I've chosen to boycott the Oscars until they clean up their act. Actually, I haven't watched the Oscars in a few years since seeing millionaires pat themselves on the back every year no longer interests me. And the show is always too lengthy, with overlong dance routines, uninteresting montages, and politically heated acceptance speeches that no one wants to watch or listen to. But, hey, let's continue to show complete performances of each of the five nominated songs. That seems to be the only musical category that matters to the Academy. Why watch a composer like Hildur Guðnadóttir win the first-ever Academy Award for best original dramatic score by a woman? I'm sure no one wanted to watch her inspirational speech, right? Over the years, I've dedicated a number of broadcasts to the Academy Awards. I've even mentioned how many Oscars a composer has earned on several occasions. In 2014, author, film studies academic, and film musicologist Emilio Audissino published the first edition of his book THE FILM MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS. In 2021, the book's second edition was published. While focusing on John Williams' music and career by analyzing the composer's approach to writing music, the book also discussed three significant film scores in Williams' filmography: JAWS, STAR WARS, and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. In early June 2024, Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Emilio via Zoom at Linnaeus University, Sweden, where he was an Associate Professor. To commemorate the book's tenth anniversary, they discussed its origins and delved into John Williams' musical career, featuring music from many of the composer's most memorable scores. On February 8, 2022, composer John Williams turns 90 years old. To honour one of the greatest film composers of all time THE CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST is proud to present a mammoth six-part podcast series dedicated to the five-time Academy Award winner. You might actually be familiar with this series already. I produced a similar series back in 2012 to celebrate Williams' 80th birthday. While that show was successful, I felt that it could be approved upon and updated. So, I've used John Williams' birthday as an excuse to completely revamp the series by re-editing the scripts, re-recording all the dialogue and completely re-editing the shows. In addition, I will be producing a brand new sixth part to cover the years 2013-2021, which will launch on John Williams birthday, February 8, 2022. A lot of effort and time went into producing this new version of the series and I hope you enjoy the results. In part one of this special, we will be presenting an overview of "Johnny" Williams' work spanning 1961-1969 including such television shows as CHECKMATE, LOST IN SPACE, THE TIME TUNNEL, LAND OF THE GIANTS and THE GHOSTBREAKER. In this episode, CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO pays tribute to a genuine soundtrack hero and pioneer… Intrada Records founder, Douglass Fake, who passed away at the age of 72 on July 13, 2024. Who was Douglass Fake? Well, one of Doug’s closest friends and colleagues, Joe Sikoryak, wrote a beautiful obituary a few days after Doug’s passing on Facebook. You can read it HERE! I personally never met Doug, but I did communicate with him and Roger Fiegelson, Intrada’s executive producer, many times when requesting albums to play on my soundtrack show, which began in 1996. Doug and the rest of the crew at Intrada have been supporting the show for over 25 years, and I do remember Doug telling me that if I ever needed anything, I should call or email him or Roger and they’d send whatever I requested down immediately. It didn’t matter if it was a new release or a release that came out ten years ago; if they had it in stock, they’d send it down. We planned to release this episode a few weeks ago but a few things popped up that slowed down production (work and illnesses). On top of that, the fine folks at Intrada Records were guests on Robert Emmett's soundtrack radio program "The Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show," where they produced their own three-hour tribute show to Doug on Saturday August 24, 2024. So, not to step on any toes, I decided to delay the release of my own tribute show to today. So, on today’s show, we’ll be playing not only selections from Intrada’s extensive soundtrack library, but also messages of remembrance from fans such as Amer Zahid, Chris Malone, Ian Clark, Jason Drury, Jim Wilson, Nick Zwar, Lee Wileman, and Victor Field. Doug’s was a legend in the soundtrack community and we owe him a debt of gratitude for bringing much joy into our lives. Thank you, Doug. You will be missed. Enjoy the show!
