Jeremy Saulnier (MURDER PARTY, BLUE RUIN, GREEN ROOM) returns after a lengthy hiatus with the long-in-development Netflix original revenge movie REBEL RIDGE! Starring Aaron Pierre as a marine facing off against the corrupt law enforcement of a small Louisiana town, it’s not quite the FIRST BLOOD-riff that the initial trailers suggested, but its mix of crooked cops, a righteous cause, racial politics and a dynamite performance in the lead creates something very special. On this episode of CINEMA SMORGASBORD SELLS OUT we restrain ourselves from delving into spoilers while discussing the film, responding to some of the critiques we’ve heard since its release, and so much more. Check it out!

Claudio Cassinelli plays a man on the edge in Sergio Martino’s unique eurocrime oddity THE SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF A MINOR which mixes comedic elements, the elaborate (and stylish) murder sequences from the popular giallo films of the time – including a knock-off Goblin-style score almost as good as the real thing – and the usual Poliziotteschi trappings of the era to create something a bit scattershot, but totally unique. Filled with odd flourishes and bizarre choices, it’s equally confusing and enthralling – just like our hosts! Check it out!

Episode 139 – JodoWOWsky Part 9 – The Rainbow Thief (1990)10 Oct 202201:44:29

RSS/iTunes/Spotify

After the worldwide success of SANTA SANGRE, Jodorowsky was inundated with offers to make horror films, but he found himself more interested in – for the first time – working with a large budget and big stars. His opportunity came in the form of producer Alexander Salkind, who approached Jodo to direct his wife’s script for a project called THE RAINBOW THIEF, starring Omar Sharif, Peter O’Toole and Christopher Lee. The result (nearly) ended Alejandro Jodorowsky’s directing career, with the film barely being released before being dumped onto VHS in the US four years after its completion. But is the final result truly a disaster? On this episode of JODOWOWSKY we’re breaking down the complicated history and tangled legacy of THE RAINBOW THIEF and asking what the heck went wrong. We also pay tribute to the late Cristóbal Jodorowsky, and discuss Jonathan Ross’s 1990 episode of his program For One Week Only devoted to Jodorowsky. Check it out!

On this episode of WE DO OUR OWN STUNTS we’re going back in time! Back before SNAKE IN THE EAGLE’S SHADOW or DRUNKEN MASTER, when Lo Wei reluctantly gave Jackie Chan permission to – finally – make the kung fu comedy he always wanted. The result was HALF A LOAF OF KUNG FU, which Lo Wei immediately shelved until the international success of Jackie’s Yuen Woo-ping-directed films made him rush it into cinemas. How is it? On the return (for the final time?) of FORGOTTEN GEMS? we’re watching Denis Levant and Mireille Perrier in Leos Carax’s feature debut BOY MEETS GIRL from 1984. Equal parts dark comedy, and tragic (sometimes surreal) romance, the film brings two recently jilted lovers together (eventually) despite the omnipresent distractions of tap dancing, music, pinball, and just trying to exist in your early 20s. It’s stirring, odd, and captivating, but did we understand any of it? Listen and find out!

Check out the How Do You Do, Fellow Kids? archive right here.

We’re back on our Steve Buscemi bullcrap with IN THE SOUP director Alexandre Rockwell reuniting with some of the cast of the film (including Buscemi, Seymour Cassel and Carol Kane) to make the neo-noir comedy PETE SMALLS IS DEAD, which stars Peter Dinklage as an ex-screenwriter and a tremendous Mark Boone Junior as his impossibly slovenly friend. The pair head to LA to get some cash for Dinklage’s stolen screenplay, while paying tribute to their recently deceased friend Pete Smalls (Tim Roth). It’s overstuffed, and needlessly confusing, but has a parade of familiar faces that keeps things lively. We also chat about private detectives, Steve Buscemi’s biggest box office hits and MORE. We continue our chronological look at the career of Carol Kane on PRAISING KANE with the surreal 1981 French drama THE GAMES OF COUNTESS DOLINGEN, partially based on the works of Unica Zürn (with a bit of Bram Stoker thrown in for good measure). A complex, twisting and often quite shocking film, it puzzled and intrigued our hosts who came away from it with two very different perspectives, and sparked a conversation about how much knowledge (or research) should be expected from an audience before watching a film. It’s an ALL COMICS episode of JodoWOWsky with our hosts examining three Alejandro Jodorowsky graphic novel collaborations throughout the late 70s and 80s. We start with a deep dive into THE EYES OF THE CAT, the (sorta!) first collaboration between Jodorowsky and the legendary Moebius from 1978. It’s gorgeous, highly experimental, and we even discuss a recent attempt to make a videogame adaptation! Then we move on to the often baffling THE JEALOUS GOD, a collaboration between Jodorowsky and Silvio Cadelo first published in Heavy Metal in 1985. And finally we finish with Jodorowsky’s first young adult comic THE MAGICAL TWINS with his frequent collaborator Georges Bess, first published in 1987. All this and the latest Jodorowsky news. CHECK IT OUT!

RSS/iTunes/Spotify

Despite his increasing success with comics, Jodorowsky was still reeling from the failure of his Dune project when he decided to adapt Reginald Campbell’s “Poo Lorn of the Elephants” into the disastrous 1980 film TUSK. Disowned by the director (“Don’t see Tusk. I bury the film.”) and nearly impossible to track down in a watchable form, the movie remains an enigma in Alejandro Jodorowsky’s career. On this episode of JodoWOWsky, we look at how TUSK came about, whether it’s the disaster so often reported, whether a better film might be hiding inside the original elements, and how the heck the whole thing fell apart. Starring William Smith as an American soldier helping local villagers fight off the Japanese during World War II and John Gardwood as a soldier who gets horribly burned by a Japanese attack and haunts the nearby villages as a monstrous hunchback! It’s real weird. But it does have a delightful moustache twirling performance by Vic Diaz, and also a pretty amazing decapitation that may or may not directly involve the man. Check it out!

Episode 97 – JodoWOWsky Part 5 – The Incal (1981-2014)06 Dec 202102:45:59

RSS/iTunes/Spotify

After the collapse of Jodorowsky’s Dune project, the work that went into it went on to influence countless other future film projects, but it also provided the inspiration for another work: the comic series THE INCAL, which began in 1981 in the pages of Metal Hurlant (aka Heavy Metal) and continued the collaboration between Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius (aka Jean Giraud). That story took seven years to tell, finally finishing in 1988. Since then there’s been a prequel (Before The Incal), an abandoned sequel with Moebius (After The Incal) and a true sequel finished in 2014 (Final Incal). On this episode of JodoWOWsky we check out the entire Incal saga, starting with Jodorowsky’s comic background and his first work with Moebius before moving into discussing each novel, before finishing with some final thoughts on the series, as well as our thoughts on the upcoming film version directed by Taika Waititi. And we finish by fan-casting our ideal John Difool! An epic project like The Incal requires an epic-length episode, so grab a whisky and a box of SPV and prepare to experience the greatest graphic novel series ever written.

On this episode we refer to the recent article from The Guardian about the auctioning off of the book of Jodorowsky’s DUNE. Check that out here.

We also referred to a recent interview that Jodorowsky did with The Hollywood Reporter about his 40 years with The Incal. Read that here.
