| Megalopolis: A Great Debate About The Future of Cinema | 26 Sep 2024 | 01:33:34 | |
Is Megalopolis on track to be a massive flop? Or is it destined to be the greatest cult classic ever made? This week, we got a chance to see the one night only advance IMAX screening of Francis Ford Coppola's 40 year Magnum Opus, Megalopolis. This film stars such big names as Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, Dustin Hoffman and many many many more. This movie left us with some serious serious questions about the future of cinema. For instance, was this movie made for an audience that no longer exists? And does Copolla's grandiose style get in the way of his overall message. Well strap in because this movie is either a misunderstood classic or a soon to be king of the cult cinema mount rushmore. | Is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) Bad or Too Overstuffed for Film? | 19 Sep 2024 | 01:33:07
Is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice bad or would it work better as a tv show on Netflix rather than an overstuffed film? The long awaited sequel to Beetlejuice is out now and as massive fans of the original we went in conflicted. Would this legacy sequel bringing back the likes of Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, and Tim Burton fulfill the promise of the original or would it just be another Nostalgia cash grab? Truth be told, its a bit of both. We Want Your FeedbackHelp us shape the future of our podcast by sharing your valuable feedback! | Movie 43 (2013) - Movie Review - Episode 239 | 10 Jun 2022 | 01:14:00
When you think of gross out/sex comedies of the 2000's-2010's; What films come to mind? Do you automatically go to such classics like "Road Trip". Or perhaps you are a bit more sophisticated and prefer to sing "Scotty Doesn't Know!" as you binge watch Euro Trip for the 50th time. Or maybe there is a deep dark crevace in your DVD rack that holds one of the most unfunny and purely vile films to grace the silver screen.....No its not 500 Days of Sodom. Its 2013's "MOVIE 43." A movie that some might view as a practical joke played on both the actors in the film and of course you the audience, Movie 43 helmed by one of the authors of late 90's gross out comedy, Peter Farrelly, features a cavalcade of A and B list stars who happen to have been dooped into starring in a gross out unfunny anthology of gross out horrors. This week, John and Brian are entering the world of conspiracy, aliens, and the supernatural as we review the indie film, Flatwoods. With a story steeped in local lore and weaved into a web of conspiracy, the film tells the story of documentary filmmaker Carol James and her pursuit for the truth about the Flatwoods Monster. | Money Plane (2020)- Movie Review - Episode 237 | 06 May 2022 | 01:11:09
After a bit of a break, we are back with a brand new episode. And after our foray into high cinema with last episode's extensive review of "The Batman". We figured we had to follow up such a high mark in cinema with a complete turd of a movie. Kinda like having your delicious taco bell then suffering for it about an hour or so later. And boy of boy do we have a stinker this week. What happens when you combine a bunch of c list actors with Kelsey Grammer, The Laurence Brothers, and Edge fro WWE? You get 2020's hot mess, "Money Plane". A movie that begs the question, did the laurence brothers have to give Fraiser Crane a literal plane full of cash to get him to be in this movie? Or why did the filmmakers put their lone actor who knows how to fight, Edge, in a cock pit for more than half of the movie? There's a lot to unpack with this one. So don't forget your boarding pass and remember, anything goes on the money plane, except compitent storytelling

| The Batman (2022) - Movie Review - Episode 236 | 05 Apr 2022 | 01:26:36 | |
This week, Brian and John don't just emerge from the shadows, they are the shadows.....well not quite. More like they emerged from the shadows of a movie theater with smilex gas grins across their faces after seeing Matt Reeves' "The Batman". Fair warning, this review does contain some spoilers. So if you have yet to see the film, please check it out first. But with this being the 3rd batman to be introduced in less than 20 years, does this version of the caped crusader hold up against the down to earth version of Bale's Batman or the roided up part time leader of the Justice League version that we get with Affleck. Or could this version of The Dark Knight actually be the most definitive version that we've seen in live action? We'll find out today! | 2021: Year in Review - Part 1 - Episode 234 | 24 Mar 2022 | 01:28:33
This week, we are back with a long long long overdue breakdown of the year that was 2021. Yes it's March and yea this is usually the time of the year when we pull a bad Leprechaun movie to review...but 2021 was full of so much insanity, how could we not spend some time talking about it. How much insanity do you ask? Well we've got everything from the tragedy and revolt of film workers to those we lost....and those we cancelled. As well as the highest grossing and lowest grossing films of the year. So put away the spring cleaning for just a minute, as we take a trip down Fury Road to the year that was 2021. | The Matrix Resurrections - Movie Review - Episode 232 | 09 Feb 2022 | 01:09:21
This week, we are jacking in "hehe" back into the world of kung fu and bullet-time with a long awaited review of The Matrix Resurrections. A movie that no one really asked for that arrived 20 years too late in the middle of a pandemic and oh yea....as part of the rooster of HBO Max movies that has had it's theatrical revenue undercut by streaming. But aside from all those things in "the real world" going against it, what about the movie itself? Does The Matrix Resurrections live up to the original techno philosophy of the 1999 classic or like the sequels from 2003 fall face first into a brick wall of too many plot points, characters, and a web of confusion. Happy New Year Psychos Nation! It's been a hell of a 2021 and we are hopeful that 2022 just sucks a little bit less than last year. So to kick off 2022, we are celebrating by reviewing probably one of the only slasher films that tackle New Years Eve; 1980's New Years Evil. A movie that manages to neither scare or entertain any audience, New Years Evil is the story of Punk Rock/New Wave Elvira Wannabe "Blaze" who on her call in music show is terrorized by a caller by the name of "Evil" who threatens to murder women at the stroke of midnight in everytime zone leading up to the westcoast and ulimately her. The movie features a bizarre mish-mash of "punk rock" that honestly would offend any serious punk rock fan along with a killer whose motivations are rooted in crazy levels of mysogyny. | Dune (1984) - Movie Review - Episode 227 | 27 Nov 2021 | 01:12:41
This week, Brian and John travel to the year 10191 the the world of Dune. Being that Denis Villeneuve's masterpiece was recently released on HBO Max and theaters to rave reviews and serving as a visual effects schmorgasborg, we thought that instead of do a review on that movie that we take a look at the bizarre and hard to understand 1984, David Lynch version that gave us such wonderful moments like Sting in a triangle cod piece, Sir Patrick Stewart discussing that moods are for "cattle and love play", and of course the wacky wacky wacky Harkonnens. So, grab a little bit of the Spice Malange because there is no way you'll be able to understand this movie sober as we dive into the world of DUNE! | Hellraiser (1987) - Movie Review - Episode 226 | 15 Nov 2021 | 01:10:30
This week, Brian and John are explorers in the further reaches of experience as we take a trip back to the year 1987 and review a film that serves as a perfect fit between this gap of time between Halloween and Thanksgiving; Clive Barker's Hellraiser. A movie that is equal parts family drama (just like thanksgiving) and sadomascistic demons from beyond the grave.....see I told you it works for both holidays. Hellraiser was a film that stuck out from the masked killers and dream demons from the 80's. It presented something new, an intelligent monster that ultimately was not the real monster of the film. With it being next up on the remake chopping block with count'em 2 projects coming to HULU and HBO Max, we figured it would be a good time to review this twisted film that holds a special place in Brian's heart. So grab your favorite S&M outfit and of course, no tears please as it is a waste of good suffering as we review the 1987 classic, HELLRAISER. | Fear Street (1994/1978/1666) - Movie Review - From The Concession Stand- Episode 3 | 08 Nov 2021 | 01:00:25
What happens when nostalgia for a horror book series from the 90's collides with a streaming giant with an insatiable appetite for content....you get the 3 part extravaganza, FEAR STREET! As we come down from the halloween highs, Brian and Laine felt it was a good idea to take a deep look at this series that manages to on one hand bring a good amount of gore and decent characters to life, but at the same time anger and confuse Brian due to a lack of attention to detail or following the film's own rules. So strap into our time machine as we blow through the inner drama between Shadyside and Sunnyvale and take a deep look at the monsters that reside on FEAR STREET! | Spookies (1986) - Movie Review - Episode 224 | 20 Oct 2021 | 00:46:36
This week, we are rolling out the perfect trick (or treat depending on how much you like this movie) with a trip back in time to the 80's.....we're not sure the year because the little gem of a movie we are reviewing may have been shot in 1984, 1985, and then released in 1986, 1987, and 1988. The movie is the mutant mish mash that is SPOOKIES! A movie you probably remember bits of pieces from during those late nights on TNT's Monster-Vision or USA's Up-All-Night from the 90's but never actually sat down to watch the whole film. And why would this movie not be memorable? It's got everything! Giant Spiders that suck you dry, farting muck men, were cats, a mid-life crisis dad hanging out with a bunch of 20 something year olds who themselves are pretending to be teenagers, and oh yea...ZOMBIES!! So buckle up folks, we're making a be line to Kreon's Crypt as we dive into the world of SPOOKIES! | CarousHELL The 2nd - Movie Review - Episode 223 | 11 Oct 2021 | 00:53:16
This week, John and Brian are back with a breakdown of a indie horror film just in time for Spooky Season. Friend of the show, Steve Rudzinski has dropped the sequel to his 2016 magnum killer unicorn opus with CarousHELL The 2nd. We try to remain fairly spoiler free on this one but be warned there are a few plot points dropped in this review that may be spoilery. CarousHELL The 2nd is one of the rare movies that we've come across that fostered a pretty decent back and forth conversation over what worked and what didn't work, the role of story in films that feature over the top concepts, and what we all hope to see in a third CarousHELL film. So grab your pop corn as we deep dive into the world of Duke, Robbie, and Nazi vampies (not really vampires) as we review CarousHELL The 2nd. | Mel Brooks- Filmmaker Retrospective - Episode 222 | 28 Sep 2021 | 01:13:39
This week, Brian and John break down the life and career of the king of the parody film.....No not the Zucker's and no not Naked Gun or Airplane. We are instead talking about Mel Brooks. A man who has helped shape comedy (and film history) with his fantastic wit in his ability to write and punch up scripts for TV, his parody films knocking everything from the western all the way to parodies of Dracula and Frankenstein, and funding and producing films that transcend cinema with credits for The Fly and The Elephant Man. | Why We Love B Movies - Episode 221 | 20 Sep 2021 | 00:54:27
This week, we are back after a brief hiatus dropping one of our most introspective episodes to date. Most of us have a deep down love of terrible cinema. It's the demented gremlin cousin of the part of you that laudes the best director or best film of the year. Deep down, we all love to watch an awesomely bad film. But did you ever take a step back and ask yourself why you love terrible cinema? That's the question Brian and John attempt to answer today. | Batman and Robin (1997): The "Wacky Deli" of Superhero Movies - Episode 220 | 29 Aug 2021 | 01:13:53
This week's episode is 220 episodes in the making. This week, we are closing out our long running review of the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher Original Batman Series with 1997's Batman and Robin. What is truly amazing about this cluster of neon, terrible acting, terrible story, puns, and camp galore is that this movie was the fear that fan boys had back in 1988 when Michael Keaton, at the time knkown for comedic roles, was cast. A fear that Batman would return to the ridiculous and over the top parody as seen in the 1960's Adam West series. This film is notable for being the death kneel in the Batman franchise that ultimately would help spawn a super hero revival rooted in darker and more mature superhero stories. It begs the question, if Batman and Robin didn't exist as the proverbial "rock bottom" would we have movies like Blade, Xmen, Spiderman, and the films of the MCU? We really are wondering how one actor can go from working with Paul Thomas Anderson and playing a marvel character then jump into playing a spastic, mustache twirler named Al-G- Rhythm. So in the words of Newman, grab your wheeties, lace up your Nikes, we'll grab a big mac on the way to the looney bin as we dive into the smoldering nostalgia turd that is Space Jam: A New Legacy. | Black Widow (2021) - Movie Review - Episode 218 | 01 Aug 2021 | 01:12:49
This week, Brian and John tackle Marvel Studios' first foreay into the quagmire that is the post-pandemic movie landscape with Black Widow. A movie that was late due to a pandemic but also about 5 years too late due to the bone-headed belief that female-led superhero films would not sell in a sea of space gods, hulks, iron men, and super soldiers. The result is a movie that tries to make up for lost time that originally saw a character reduced to the quintessential "sexy lamp" in Iron Man 2 and only over the course of 8 years finally get some character developement in Avengers Endgame only to die at the very end. So yea, this movie is starting out pretty deep in the hole. So strap in as we wander through the Red Room and find out all about our favorite red-headed assasin in "BLACK WIDOW." | Team America: World Police (2004) - Movie Review - Episode 217 | 05 Jul 2021 | 01:00:37
This week, we are celebrating the 4th of July the only way we know how. By breaking down one of the biggest parodies of American imperialism, 2004's Team America: World Police. A movie from the minds of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, probably the only people in the world who could make a movie that offends literally everyone yet still holds up as a fantastic parody of not only post 9/11 hysteria but also a parody of over the top Jerry Bruckheimer films. Do we think this movie could be made now a days....probably not, but if you're winding down from your backyard bbq and want to watch something other than Independence Day, take a listen to our breakdown of TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE! | Summer School (1987) - Movie Review - Episode 216 | 28 Jun 2021 | 01:16:19
This week, we are reliving our worst nightmares......high school. We are sticking around 1987 as we take a look at one of the rare teenage comedies from the era to actually not be completely gross out and full of adult jokes. We are of course talking about the 1987 blast from the past, Summer School. A movie that gave us Mark Harmon prior to joining the force of NCIS, Kirsty Alley before Cheers and Look Who's Talking, and Dean Cameron before Ski School. A movie that just might be more famous for a comedic scene of gross out gore than it is for having a music video featuring the voice of Tommy Pickles (E.G Daily) or being directed by comedy legend, Carl Reiner. So grab your favorite 1980's red sunglasses and open your text books to page 27 as we review SUMMER SCHOOL! PATREON!We've just launched our Patreon! | The Stepfather (1987)- Movie Review - Episode 215 | 20 Jun 2021 | 01:13:00
This week, Brian and John celebrate Father's Day in the only way possible; by reviewing a movie about a homicidal maniac who preys on single parent families in his search for the perfect family. We are of course talking about 1987's The Stepfather. An odd ball and much under appreciated slasher film that feels more like a slasher from the early 80's rather than the late 80's when stripped-sweatered dream killers and sadomascistic demons from a puzzle box were all the rage. Yet this film rises above all that and provides us with a smart and multi-layered horror film that touches on everything from Reagan Conservatism, the American dream, and the mixed emotions that come when new people enter a family due to either divorce or when a parent dies. So grab your world's greatest dad mug and pop on those headphones as we dive into the world of The Stepfather! Check out The Anatomy of a Franchise: The Stepfather by In Praise of Shadows on Youtube. | Army of the Dead (2021) - Movie Review - Episode 214 | 14 Jun 2021 | 01:03:57
This week, Brian and John wear out our welcome in Las Vegas as we step out of the world of Nomi Malone and The Stardust and into the world of Alpha Zombies, Beta Zombies, and Bespectacled Batistas'. Yes, we are talking about the much talked about post Justice League Netflix-nugget from Zack Snyder: Army of The Dead. A movie that has divided people nearly as much as any Zack Snyder movie would. The argument this time being centered around just how much Ella Purnell's Kate Ward screwed the pooch for the entire crew during her "I gotta get my random friend" death wish scene. Or possibly whether the movie is actually some bizzaro purgatory video game (if you've seen the film, you know what I'm talking about). Either way, grab your melee weapon and boomsticks as we take on ARMY OF THE DEAD! PATREON!We've just launched our Patreon! This week, Brian and John are packing our bags and hitchhiking to the city of dreams and riches....LAS VEGAS! Do you crave a movie about a down on her luck girl who rises through the ranks of Vegas' entertainment industry to become the leading Showgirl of the Stardust? Showgirls has got that too! Just don't ask for 5 star acting and a cohesive plot. And please please, don't eat while watching this movie (unless you are eating doggy chow). This week John and Brian invite you for dinner (wink wink cannibalism) as we gather for a feast of one of the most divisive entries in the Hannibal Lecter Cinematic Universe (Sorry Hannibal the tv show, only movies on this podcast), Hannibal from 2001. A direct sequel to the oscar winning 1991 Jonathan Demme film, Silence of the Lambs; Hannibal continues the story of everyone's favorite flesh eater, Dr. Hannibal Lecter as he jet sets around italy avoiding assassins, sneaky italian detectives, and flesh eating swine courtesy of a creepy Gary Oldman. All the while he pines for his favorite FBI Agent, Clarice Starling, notably not played by Jodie Foster. So I hope you have brought your appetite as we sink our teeth into Hannibal. | Leprechaun 2 (1994) - Movie Review - Episode 207 | 17 Mar 2021 | 01:05:43
Happy St. Patrick's Day to our Irish friends and fans and of course to those special fans who happen to "pretend" to be Irish every St. Paddy's Day. In honor of the holiday, we are cracking open the second entry into what arguably might be the last gasp of the slasher era. We're talking about 1994's Leprechaun 2. A movie that literally has nothing in common with the original, other than Warwick Davis carrying the entire film due to the absence of the real star of the original, Jennifer Aniston's old nose and high tops. So grab a pint of green beer and a slice of Shepherd's Pie as we break down this cringe-worthy piece of nostalgia, Leprechaun 2! | EXCLUSIVE: Behind The Scenes of Under ConTROLL- Featurette Review - Episode 206 | 09 Mar 2021 | 00:40:00
This week, coming off of the heels of our review of Bloodsucka Jones vs. The Creeping Death, we have an exclusive folks. Exclusive in the fact that your favorite Cinema Psychos are the first in North America to review the the behind the scenes featurette on the making of the unofficial sequel to Troll 2, "Under ConTroll" (Aka Goblin 2/Trolls World). We reviewed Under ConTroll way back in Episode 151 and one of the things we wanted to know was a bit of the madness that goes into creating this wild ride of a film. This mini documentary provides insight into that by touching on everything from practical effects, an international crew and cast with various language barriers, and of course the production of a film on an indie level. So buckle up as we peel back the curtain on the making of "Under ConTroll". This week, after our review last week of the turducken of terrible that was Neil Breen's "Pass Thru" , we here at The Cinema Psychos Show needed a bit of a pallet cleanser. And wouldn't you know it, we got one in the form of the Justin Armaos' new release, "Bloodsucka Jones vs. The Creeping Death." A movie that serves as not only a comedic play off of blaxsploitation cinema but also zombie movies (which has our interest already peaked as we are all based in Pittsburgh: The Zombie Capital of the World). | Pass Thru - The 4th Horseman of the Breenpocalypse - Episode 204 | 13 Feb 2021 | 01:11:59
This week, we are opening the 6th seal of terrible cinema and unleashing the 4th horseman of the Breenpocalypse with Neil Breen's "Pass Thru". A movie that some say isn't really a movie but more or less a collection of clips and drone footage from the raving of a sundrenched madman bent on solving the worlds problems by "cleansing" the world of bad people. So yea....It's a fun movie for the whole family....if that family is perhaps the Manson family. So grab your finest booze and strap yourselves in as we dive into the mind of Neil Breen with Pass Thru. PATREON!We've just launched our Patreon! This week, we are tackling a topic that is tearing Hollywood apart. The guttaral street fight that has broken out between HBO Max and streaming services vs Movie Theaters. The battle is of course over HBO Max's decision to release their 2021 blockbuster films on streaming as well as through traditional theaters. We get in a heated debate that tackles everything from whether studios will continue streaming after the pandemic ends, whether consumers will go back to theaters, and what movie theaters SHOULD do to compete in the post pandemic world where streaming might seriously threaten their very existence. So join us for this street fight over the future of cinema as we take a look at the battle between streaming and theaters. PATREON!We've just launched our Patreon! | Is Stepfather 3 (1992) The Worst Direct-to-TV Horror Film? | 16 Jun 2024 | 01:18:47
Is Stepfather 3 (1992) The Worst Direct-to-TV Horror Film? It's Father's Day and this week we are dissecting the final entry into the original Step Father franchise with the low-budget horror sequel directed by Guy Magar, starring Priscilla Barnes and Robert Whitman doing his best Terry O'Quinn impression as he slips into the shoes of the murderous Step Father. This time he's back to get that perfect family he won't kill but "standing in his way" is his new paraplegic step son Andy (bound to a wheel chair psychosomatically) who has a knack for hacking, atari, and being the future head of the CIA and Father Brennan; a Catholic Priest who likes to hang out with Andy and serve as a victim later in the movie. | Black Christmas (1974) - Movie Review- Episode 200 | 25 Dec 2020 | 02:10:32
This week, we are breaking through the episode 200 barrier in Yule tide style. We are reviewing what arguably might be the very first slasher film....no we aren't talking about John Carpenter's 1978 classic, Halloween. We're talking about the 1974 Canadian Xmas murder-fest Black Christmas. A movie that gives us party girl Margot Kidder before she became Lois Lane and one of the first roles to feature John Saxon as a police detective; a role that Saxon would literally be in for the remainder of his career (literally he was a police detective in a nightmare on elm street too) . So lock your sorority den mother's bed room door cause the calls are definitely coming from inside the house as your favorite Cinema Psychos celebrate 200 big ones and ring in the season with Black Christmas!
