Award winning podcast* 🥈. Talking about life as a British born Chinese (BBC)/British Asian. The struggles that I've had to deal with whilst growing up in my mum and dad's takeaway in the 1980s/1990s. My parents are immigrants from HK/China and moved to the UK when they were teenagers. I was brought up being Chinese at home and English when I was outside of home - it felt confusing at the time as I couldn't find a sense of belonging. But now I am much older, I am proud of my Chinese heritage and I am proud to be British. I just want to share my story with people.* Silver award at British Podcast Awards 2022 in 'Moment of the Year' category.

S4 Ep1: Food and restaurant writer/editor David Jay Paw

Saison 4 · Épisode 1

jeudi 7 mars 2024Durée 57:42

I chat with David Jay Paw who is a food and restaurant writer/editor. We talk mostly on food. Heading straight in to his role at Resy and collaborating with some amazing people such as Amanda Nguyen and Susie Bubble who have written articles to share their stories on food and restaurant. Speaking of restaurants, we have a conversation on Somsaa and Ivy Asia, how they misrepresented ESEA (East and Southeast Asian) food and the work that David did to call this out. My favourite part of the show is talking about David's dad who is in a band back in the 80's in Burma called The Wild Ones (check them out on YouTube). If you're listening don't forget to share the show with your friends.

If you have any Asian stories to share with me or a shout out, please DM me on Instagram and I might read out your message on my next show :)

S2 Ep3: Our Chinatown Special | ESEA Heritage Month

Saison 2 · Épisode 3

mardi 14 septembre 2021Durée 46:07

I’m absolutely delighted to collaborate with Chinatown London for my latest episode where I talk to Lucy, Managing Director of See Woo Group and Emily who runs Cuppacha and Taiyakiya.

Lucy and Emily spoke about their journey of running a business in the heart of London.  It was  so nice to chat with them and share our experiences of what Chinatown London means to us and discussing how diverse it is with more and more ESEA shops and food stalls/restaurants opening.

For me, Chinatown London brings a lot of memories of when my mum and dad used to take me here when I was at school.  Shopping for dried vegetables that mum would put in her soup and buying endless supplies of Chinese bakery.  When I first moved to London in 2007, there were times when I missed my family, I would go to Chinatown London for comfort and it’s always been such a joyous place. I have Chinatown London to thank for my entire London experience.

In light of ESEA Heritage Month, Chinatown London have put together a campaign #OurChinatown to explore what Chinatown means to people who have stepped foot in Chinatown London.  What’s your greatest memory of Chinatown London? You can message me on Insta or email me chinesechippygirl@gmail.com 📧

S2 Ep1: ESEA representation in kids books with Maisie Chan

Saison 2 · Épisode 1

dimanche 18 juillet 2021Durée 53:54

I'm back from my break of podcasting and my first guest of series 2 is Maisie Chan.  Maisie is a BBC (British born Chinese) childrens author.  She has recently launched 2 books, Danny Chung does not do maths (or Danny Chung sums it up in the US) and Tiger Warrior.  Also, Amy wants a pet which is my daughter's favourite book.  Maisie also runs Bubble Tea Writers Network that supports and encourages ESEA writers in the UK.

We also talk about a short story called Brian Wong who was never, ever wrong (written by David Walliams and illustrated by Tony Ross) on how the story has used harmful stereotypes to depict the Chinese community.  Which is why the ESEA community need better representation to show the real culture and not the negative stereotypes or the model minority myth.

Please follow Maisie on https://www.instagram.com/maisiechanwrites or checkout her website https://www.maisiechan.com/ for more info on her books and Bubble Tea Writers Network.

S1 Ep15: Chinese takeaways and Clubhouse

Saison 1 · Épisode 15

lundi 22 mars 2021Durée 58:38

In this episode, the legendary takeaway owner from Jade Park joins us for this episode. Jade (or should I say James) went from working in IT to running his own takeaway. He's also the Co-Founder of 'Asians in the UK' on Clubhouse every Monday at 8pm. A room where they have built a community on ESEA people and allies to come together and talk about important topics such as hate crime on Asians. A very honest conversation where I admitted to some mistakes on internalised racism and why I am unlearning and relearning.

I also share my thoughts on the mass shootings that have happened in Atlanta, America and why we should be more careful on using the words 'massage parlour'.

Please give Jade Park a follow: https://www.instagram.com/jvdepvrk and if you're in Moreton, Wirral, definitely place an order with them.

Saison 1 · Épisode 14

lundi 8 mars 2021Durée 59:07

I cannot believe that I am typing this! Katie Leung who I have been idolising for years comes on the show ❤️. Katie shares her experiences of the hate she received when she played the iconic role of Cho Chang in Harry Potter. We also talk about her role as Mei in One Child and a teaser with her next role which she is currently filming.  Also do your top 5 dim sum dishes match Katie's? Tune in to find out.

Also, I absolutely lose my 'cool' a few times whilst interviewing Katie. I am so touched that I am releasing this episode. Thank you Katie for coming on as my guest.

S1 Ep13: Keep the London Chinese Community Centre open

Saison 1 · Épisode 13

lundi 22 février 2021Durée 51:25

I had the pleasure of speaking to Beverley who is the Centre Manager of London Chinese Community Centre (LCCC). A vital service for the community, especially for the elderly where the service can help with translations and accompanying them to appointments. So many Chinese people would be lost without the centre and they need to raise at least £70k to stay open. Here’s how you can donate:

  • Visit their JustGiving page https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/cccorguk2020
  •  Or email beverley.lin@ccc.org.uk

Here are some accounts to check out and were also discussed on the show.

S1 Ep12: Where abouts in China are you from? Philippines

Saison 1 · Épisode 12

vendredi 29 janvier 2021Durée 58:22

My friend and ex colleague Isabel comes on the show. She's Filipino and grew up in the US and Philippines. Now living with her husband Rob and their baby bao (ok - Thalia) in London.

We exchange notes on what we think is important about raising our children with Asian values. We also discuss why Filipino NHS workers are more likely to be at risk of getting Covid-19. And what about people just assuming she is Chinese?🤦‍♀️

And to end on this note, Isabel is just a Superwoman! I had the pleasure of working with Isabel at JustGiving. She is now a Coach and Cofounder of Hack Camp where they run programs that helps people of colour become leaders. Go check them out https://www.instagram.com/hack.camp/ or https://www.hackcamp.co.uk/.

S1 Ep11: Kelvin Tan's story on becoming a chef | Colonising mahjong

Saison 1 · Épisode 11

mercredi 6 janvier 2021Durée 01:07:07

Chinese Malaysian born, Kelvin Tan - no doubt one of my favourite chefs of all time and a Sous Chef at 2 Michelin star restaurant, Sat Bains. We talk about his story, of how he became a chef and his desire to learn how to cook Chinese food as inspired by his Dad #PapaTan. Speaking of which, he tells us the background of how his Dad met his mum and when they moved over to Ireland. Give Kelvin a follow on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kelvintanwc - but be warned, his page will leave you drooling with all the food porn.

I've also snuck in a small solo clip of themahjongline news. More people trying to white wash the Chinese culture.  People should just leave our traditions alone and respect it.  Our culture doesn't need refining and it never will.

If you're listening, please feel free to message me on Insta and let me know what you think of this show. https://www.instagram.com/chinesechippygirl
