This moment marked the beginning of his journey into the world of tattooing, which he pursued passionately for over three decades. Senju's journey from tattooing to painting and back again illustrates the interconnectedness of different art forms. His story highlights the importance of cultural exploration and the willingness to adapt and evolve as an artist. "Yes, this is more, maybe more, seems nicer than ordinary S&M." "You're 100% in the now. There is only right now happening." "We are the outliers. We are the outcasts, supposedly. We're the ones that were, I thought, saying to each other, do whatever you want. Live a happy life. And now we're turning on each other?" "In our minds, change is a tiger coming, you know?" | Love, Loss, and Life Lessons featuring Scott Campbell | 18 Dec 2024 | 01:05:10
Despite technological advancements, the human touch and taste in tattooing remain irreplaceable. The essence of tattoo artistry lies in the unique vision and emotional connection that an artist brings to their work. While AI can generate designs and assist in the rendering process, it cannot replicate the nuanced understanding of aesthetics, personal stories, and the intimate relationships that develop between tattoo artists and their clients. Scott Campbell, Aaron's first of many guests at our podcast pop-up during the Golden State Tattoo Expo, highlights the importance of emotional engagement in tattooing. He notes that the act of tattooing is not just about the final product but also about the journey and the connection formed during the process. This human element is what makes tattoos deeply personal and meaningful, transcending mere visuals. The artist's ability to understand and interpret a client's desires, emotions, and life experiences is something that AI cannot fully grasp or replicate. Tune in for an engaging dialogue that explores the depth and layers of tattoo artistry and the passion behind it. 00:00:00 - Distinctive Voice in Tattooing 00:02:48 - Scott's Thoughtful Approach to Art and Life 00:05:00 - Early Tattooing Experiences 00:06:13 - The Pirate Gypsy Vibe of Tattooing 00:07:32 - Influences and Mentors: Juan Puente 00:18:40 - Relationships and Tattoos 00:26:05 - Scott's Podcast: Stupid Things for Love Quotes: "I feel like tattooing is kind of like this big metaphor for the, you know, the misfit table at the high school lunchroom." "I walked in and told the guy I was a full-fledged professional tattooer, but the airline lost my luggage." "Oh, this is a place where you can sit still, but still feel like you're moving, you know, because it's such a river of humanity." "If I do a tattoo on somebody and they get up and they're like, tears in their eyes, they're like, I love it so much, that's the best feeling in the world." "To develop the ability to dive into something headfirst, not knowing how it's going to end up is really powerful and like one of the most courageous acts ever." "I do think people's physical identity isn't as significant as their digital identity anymore." "Fulfillment is a nice word. It's the ability to look back and feel proud of who you are and what you've done with your life." "I think nowadays I look at life, like it's trippier than some of my hardest acid trips." "In that moment, you just moved the entire human species one millimeter closer to world peace and all the things we all say that the world should be like." "What other art form do two people get to collaborate at that level?" "One of the beautiful things about tattooing to me also is like seeing the evolution of what you're doing like any other art form but add into it the trust of the human allowing you to experiment on their body." "I feel like things just in general in society are kind of like splitting and becoming more polar opposite." "We're a fully mature industry. And like any mature industry, visibility and marketability are now essential." "That not giving a fuck thing, good luck. Good luck with that." | Refugee Camp to Freedom In America: The Inspiring Story of Sathya Chey Patterson | 28 Aug 2024 | 01:19:40
Hailing from a family of Cambodian genocide survivors, Sathya Patterson's parents worked diligently to support their family. Starting with recycling cardboard and cans, they eventually built a small business empire that allowed them to retire in their fifties. This success was achieved through hard work, saving, and making prudent investments in real estate, gold, and diamonds. Building wealth through hard work, wise investing, and living within one's means, coupled with forgiveness and compassion as integral paths to healing trauma and cultivating self-love, can lead to personal and financial freedom. Sathya Shea Patterson's journey exemplifies this principle. Patterson's experience as a single mother at a young age further reinforced the importance of financial stability. She returned to school when her daughter was three months old, earning a finance degree from Cal State Fullerton. Patterson's journey to success in the financial world was also largely due to her commitment to showing compassion towards those who have caused harm, recognizing that they may have been acting from a place of confusion or pain. By delving into her inner child and offering love and acceptance, a spiritual journey and practice that began in her 20s, she was able to heal past wounds and nurture a sense of self-worth. Fear is a powerful force that can either hold us back or propel us forward. In a podcast episode, it was mentioned that fear is energy and can serve as a reminder of past pain or uncertainties. Michaeel Getz shares his perspective on fear with host Aaron Della Vedova, highlighting that fear is often associated with the unknown, the what-ifs, and the variables that create uncertainty. Many people tend to shy away from their goals and dreams because of the fear of the unknown. It can be easier to stay in a familiar but unsatisfactory situation rather than taking a leap into the unknown. | The Dark Side of Tattooing ft. Derek Noble | 22 May 2024 | 01:18:22
Derek Noble's work is deeply rooted in a traditional aesthetic that he has cultivated over the years, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of sources. Influences such as medieval religious panel paintings, Tibetan and Japanese art, horror movies, and metal music have all played a significant role in shaping his distinctive 'dark side' style in both tattooing and painting. Noble's fascination with medieval religious panel paintings is evident in the composition and themes of his work. He values the traditional layout and composition found in these historical artworks, incorporating them into his own pieces to imbue them with a sense of timelessness and depth. Moreover, Noble looks to Tibetan and Japanese art for inspiration in the composition and layout of his pieces. By blending elements from different cultural traditions, Noble creates a fusion of styles that adds complexity and richness to his art. Additionally, Noble's passion for horror movies and metal music influences the darker aspects of his work. Themes of horror, demons, and gore find their way into his tattoos and paintings, infusing them with a macabre and edgy quality that reflects his personal interests and adds a captivating element to his portfolio. In this episode of Chats and Tatts, Aaron Della Vedova chats with Derek about his loyalty to the craft and his unique voice in tattooing as they delve into discussions on traditional mindset, AI in tattooing, and anesthesia techniques.
