The Los Angeles Chargers opened the 2026 season with a disappointing 26-14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at SoFi Stadium.

First, I gotta give credit where credit is due. Arizona came in with a game plan, stuck with it, and executed. But from the Chargers’ side, there’s no way around it — this was a bad performance.

The offense struggled, the defense couldn’t consistently get off the field, and the Chargers simply didn’t look like the team many of us expected to see coming into Week 1.

So what went wrong? Who deserves the blame? And most importantly, how concerned should Chargers fans be after just one game?

This team has talent on every level of the defense, and now it’s time for those players to show what they can do. Same thing across the entire roster. Everything we’ve talked about throughout the offseason has led to this moment.

The Chargers have made their initial cuts and the first 53-man roster is set. But as we all know, this roster is far from finished.

There will be more moves before Week 1. Players designated to return from IR will eventually work their way back, waiver claims could change the depth chart, and I wouldn’t rule out another trade or two as the Chargers continue shaping this team for the regular season.

But right now, with the initial 53 in place, I wanted to give my thoughts on where I believe this roster stands, some of the decisions that were made, the depth at certain positions, and what I expect from this team heading into the season.

We’ve spent the entire offseason talking about the talent, the injuries, the depth and the expectations. Now the preseason is over, the roster decisions have started, and it’s almost time to find out what this Chargers team really is.

This is my assessment of where the Chargers stand TODAY — knowing there could still be plenty of movement before Week 1.

The Chargers are getting closer to finalizing their 53-man roster, but before the cuts, waiver claims and roster moves start coming in, I’ve got a few things on my wish list.

First, the backup quarterback situation. I would much rather see the Chargers bring in an experienced veteran like Andy Dalton to back up Justin Herbert than go into the season relying on DJ Uiagalelei or Trey Lance. If Herbert has to miss a couple of games, I want somebody behind him who has been there before and knows how to manage an NFL offense.

Then we get into the linebacker room. I would love to see Marlowe Wax make this football team, and I think Del’Shawn Phillips has earned an opportunity to get some starting reps. But what happens with Troy Dye and Junior Colson? Has Colson shown enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, or could the practice squad be where he ends up?

And finally, Travis Burke. The Chargers may have found themselves a gem. What Burke showed me this preseason has changed the way I look at the depth behind Rashawn Slater and lessened some of my concerns if Slater has any lingering effects from last season’s injury.

This is my Chargers 53-man roster wish list before the decisions start coming down.

Everything the Chargers want this season is right in front of them.

The talent is there. The expectations are high. And most importantly, I believe this roster has the depth to withstand some of the adversity that comes during an NFL season.

But there’s one thing that could change everything: injuries.

In today’s Chargers Talk 4630, I talk about why the Chargers’ success this season could come down to keeping their core players healthy. We’ve already seen how quickly injuries can change the outlook of a team, but if the Chargers can keep their key players on the field and take advantage of the depth they’ve built across this roster, there’s no reason this team shouldn’t be in position to make the type of run we’ve been talking about.

Everything they want is right there in front of them. Now they have to stay healthy, execute, and go get it.

The Chargers’ second preseason game against the 49ers gave us plenty to talk about, and for me, the biggest issue wasn’t necessarily what San Francisco did—it was what the Chargers did to themselves.

Penalties wiped out big plays, illegal shifts and communication problems killed drives, and offensively, that first half was just flat-out sloppy. Mike McDaniel is installing a new offense, players are learning new responsibilities, and different personnel are being moved in and out, so yeah, some growing pains are expected. It’s preseason. This is when you wanna find these problems.

But at some point, you still gotta execute.

I’m breaking down what I saw from last night’s game, what concerned me, what I liked, and what the Chargers need to clean up with one preseason game left before the games start counting.

The Chargers are heading into Preseason Game 2 against the San Francisco 49ers, and for me, this week is all about progression.

I saw some good things in Week 1. I saw some players take advantage of their opportunities, and I saw some things that still need work. Now I wanna see who can build off what they did last week.

Can the offense continue to improve? Can some of these young players put together another strong performance? What happens with these roster and position battles as we get closer to the regular season? And for the guys who didn’t have their best showing last week, how do they respond when they get another opportunity?

That’s what I’m watching in Preseason Game 2.

Another game. Another evaluation. Another opportunity to show me something.

The Chargers opened the preseason with a convincing 27-7 win over the Houston Texans, and there was a lot to like on both sides of the football.

With Justin Herbert and several starters sitting, Mike McDaniel’s offense still put up over 400 total yards with the backups, while the Chargers defense forced turnovers, created opportunities and shut Houston out in the second half.

But not everything was perfect. I’ll give you my thoughts on Trey Lance’s performance, the players who stood out, the offensive line, the running game, DJ Uiagalelei making the most of his opportunity, and what this first preseason game told me about the depth of this Chargers roster.

It’s only preseason, so the final score isn’t what matters most. The individual performances do — especially for guys fighting to make this football team.
