#12920 What Is Clerical Celibacy? Conscientious Objectors and War - Jimmy Akin
03 Oct 2026

Additionally, the episode addresses the concerns of a new Catholic in the Air Force grappling with war participation and the Church’s teachings on conscientious objection and pacifism, providing a thoughtful examination of these important topics.
01:18 – What does it mean for clerical celibacy to be a discipline?
17:42 – I’m in active duty Air Force, and a new Catholic. I now struggle with participating in war. I have filed for conscientious objector status. What does the Church actually teach about this, and can a Catholic be a pacifist?
39:49 – I just became Catholic. My family is not happy about it. My boyfriend and I want to get married but my family would be against a Catholic wedding. Any advice?
50:08 – I’m in OCIA. I noticed that during Mass sometimes the priest goes to the tabernacle to get other hosts to give out in communion. Is that okay? Does that bread turn into Jesus at the same Mass? Also is there a good resource to help me understand the Catholic approach to scripture. I grew up Baptist and I just want to understand the Catholic approach.

02:05 – Jimmy, I know in recent weeks you have taken several different approaches to refuting Gavin Ortlund’s position that Christians should not pray to saints. I’d like to focus on just one area: When Ortlund argues against praying to the saints because the Bible lacks any instruction to pray to them, is that a fair standard, even for someone who accepts sola scriptura?
16:30 – If the Immaculate Conception is true, how could Christ assume sinful flesh in the incarnation?
40:00 – I feel drawn to Catholicism, but If God wants us to become Catholic, why does it seem so complex to understand? I’m reading about the filioque and all these concepts. It just a little overwhelming and I don’t feel confident in my analysis of all these doctrinal arguments.

#12900 Weird Questions - Jimmy Akin
19 Sep 2026
Questions Covered:
04:14 – Like in the movie Surrogate. Imagine you’re at home controlling a flesh and blood robot. If you were to go to confession, would it be valid or would it be like confessing over the phone to a priest and if you were to attend Mass and receive Holy communion would the grace transfer to your spirit, would this flesh and blood robot be considered an extension of your body or need baptism to make it eligible for the sacraments if it was engineered from human DNA because of Adam and Eves original sin.
17:36 – I don’t remember if you answered this during your show, but in ep. 330 of Jimmy’s Mysterious World you went over Lyn Buchanan’s remote viewing experience for the military project Stargate. Lyn recounts that when remote viewing Jesus, He turned and looked at Lyn. My question is, what did Jesus look at? Was it Lyn’s “mind”?
23:27 – Can I wear a cowboy hat and cowboy boots if I don’t own a horse??
31:14 – How does time work in purgatory? Will we have to “revisit” all the moments where we’ve fallen short in order to right those wrongs? Or are we “frozen” in time until our final judgment? Or does time continue to flow linearly like it does on Earth? Or is there some other theory that I haven’t mentioned/thought of myself?

51:46 – I’ve heard geologists say that all “dirt” is fossilized dinosaurs and or dinosaurs’ “matter”, meaning their waste and such. If this is true, when God made Adam, would the “dirt” have been this dino matter or was he made with pre-dino dirt?
#12899 Weird Questions - Jimmy Akin
18 Sep 2026
Questions Covered:
03:38 – Did the Virgin Mary invent chili? I first heard of this on an episode of Tasting History with Max Miller. He talked about Sister Mary of Agreda who was reported to be bilocating from her convent in Spain to the Jumanos Indians in New Spain. All I’ve been able to learn about her is from Wikipedia where it says she is a venerable of the Church from the 1600s. Apparently the Jumanos Indians reached out to friars in the area that they had been visited by a “lady in blue” to seek help, and according to Max Miller the lady in blue also gave them the recipe for chili. According to Wikipedia Sister Mary also wrote books about the Virgin Mary, so I was thinking maybe the Virgin Mary gave Sister Mary the recipe for chili to give to the Indians. It makes my heart warm thinking that the Virgin Mary gave us chili.

15:25 – Why does the modern world find belief in the devil embarrassing or primitive, and what do Catholics risk losing when they reduce evil to psychology, politics, or social conditions?

#12882 Every Question on Baptism Answered Part 2 - Brayden Cook
08 Sep 2026
Does the New Testament require baptism by full immersion, or can baptism also be performed by pouring or sprinkling? In this episode of Catholic Answers Live, Brayden Cook responds to major Protestant objections to the Catholic understanding of baptism. He explains what baptism washes away in infants, whether Paul’s comparison between baptism and circumcision supports infant baptism, and what Mark 16:16 teaches about the necessity of baptism. Brayden also examines whether Cornelius receiving the Holy Spirit before baptism proves that regeneration occurs apart from the sacrament, whether the thief on the cross disproves baptismal necessity, and whether Scripture requires personal belief before baptism. Finally, he addresses how Catholics can say baptism washes away sin while also affirming that it is Christ’s blood that cleanses us from all sin.
03:29 – Where does the New Testament authorize pouring or sprinkling instead of immersion?
11:50 – If infants have committed no personal sins, what sins does baptism wash away—and where does Scripture say that Adam’s guilt is removed through infant baptism?
16:45 – Is the Catholic comparison between baptism and circumcision (Col. 2:11–12) really valid, or does the new covenant require conscious faith rather than mere physical descent?
20:55 – If baptism is necessary for salvation, why does Mark 16:16 say that the one who does not believe is condemned, rather than the one who is not baptized?
25:05 – Cornelius received the Holy Spirit before he was baptized (Acts 10:44–48). Doesn’t that prove he was already regenerated and saved before baptism?
36:40 – The thief on the cross was promised paradise without being baptized (Luke 23:39–43). Doesn’t that disprove the claim that baptism is necessary?
46:10 – Don’t Jesus’ words, “Whoever believes and is baptized” (Mark 16:16), establish the biblical order: personal belief first, baptism afterward?
51:21 – If Christ’s blood cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7), why does the Catholic Church claim that baptism washes away sin?
#12881 Every Question on Baptism Answered Part 1 - Brayden Cook
07 Sep 2026
If faith comes through hearing the gospel and believing in Christ brings salvation, what does baptism actually add? In this episode of Catholic Answers Live, Brayden Cook responds to some of the strongest objections to the Catholic understanding of baptism. He addresses what happens to those who never hear the gospel, the biblical and historical evidence for infant baptism, and whether requiring baptism contradicts salvation by grace through faith apart from works. The discussion also examines whether baptism is merely an outward symbol or actually brings regeneration, what 1 Peter 3:21 means when it says “baptism now saves you,” whether being “born of water and the Spirit” in John 3 refers to baptism, and why Catholics baptize using the Trinitarian formula despite Acts describing baptism “in the name of Jesus.”
02:18 – Paul says that faith comes through hearing the gospel (Rom. 10:17). If hearing and believing bring salvation, what does baptism actually add?
11:30 – If baptism is necessary for salvation, what happens to people who never hear the gospel or are never taught that they must be baptized?
20:45 – If infant baptism is apostolic, why is there no unambiguous example of it in Scripture—and what is the earliest historical evidence that Christians actually practiced it?
29:10 – If we are justified by faith apart from works (Rom. 3:28; Eph. 2:8–9), why does the Catholic Church insist that the work of baptism is necessary for salvation?
31:15 – Isn’t baptism simply an outward sign that someone has already been saved, rather than a sacrament that actually causes regeneration?
36:00 – Doesn’t 1 Peter 3:21 explicitly deny that physical washing saves and locate salvation instead in an appeal—or pledge—of a good conscience toward God?
46:50 – If Jesus meant baptism when he said we must be “born of water and the Spirit” (John 3:5), why didn’t he simply say “baptized”?
51:45 – Why does the Catholic Church use the Trinitarian formula of Matthew 28:19 when Acts repeatedly describes baptism “in the name of Jesus Christ” (Acts 2:38; 8:16; 10:48; 19:5)?
