I hope they will have Monica Lewinsky on as a guest, but conclude I don't have the stomach for American capitalism, which leaps to monetize everything, whether it is needed, or not. Yesterday I was surprised to see a picture of Joni Mitchel waving a small American flag, proudly declaring herself to be an American citizen after wanting to be one for 62 years.

Wasn't she here in Canada just six months ago accepting a Canadian lifetime achievement award, a Juno Award for Canadian musicians, handed to her by our Prime Minister? The optics are so, so wrong.

I talk about why she probably is entitled to the award even as an American. However, if there was a cash or monetary honorarium or component to receiving the Juno she must really donate that to the Canadian poor or Canadian food banks as Canadian artists, craftspeople and makers can no longer sell our art into the USA because of her demented leader's illegal tariff schemes.

Folk music used to be about the folk. Now it is standing in front of the US Homeland Security flag. Yuck.

Joni, if you got money as part of this awardi, give it back. Keep the trophy but give the money back to the Canadian folk who are being terrorized by your insane leader.

Later I talk about my art experimentation to create affordable small Canadian art pieces to sell into Canada and non-US markets that are Canadian, classic, lasting, and offer optimal engagement between the art and the buyer.

How can Canadian makers get discovered by European and Asian buyers in an online space dominated by American social media? What can artists and makers do to sell Canadian product excellence to new markets in Europe, Asia and South America?

I thought it might be time for a Canadian online magazine about Canadian excellence in a broad variety of categories, from art to technology to fashion. A place where importers can see a collection of maybe 100 objects to see what Canada can make. I am thinking of calling it Canadian Objects...

I bought a domain to lock it down, and I am pressure testing the idea of creating a Product of Canada magazine/gallery now. We'll see what happens with the testing.

I saw a painting at a local art show and bought it. It is absolutely timeless and captures a group of young women as they get ready for a girls night out. It absolutely spoke to me and this is why it had to be on my wall.

I am experimenting with other materials like synthetic stone and stained glass to use in art or jewelry pieces. Right now it is simply experimentation but artists must experiment to learn about materials and how they can be shaped and fashioned.

I've designed and handmade a new piece, Canadian Wearable Object, which I will sell into Europe or Canada instead of America. The tariff insanity and Canada/US trade war has long shut the border to Canadian small and medium sized makers and artists.

For two years I've battled to sell my products into America with minimal or no tariffs for my American customers, as per the trump signed CUSMA agreement, to no avail. I give up.

But how to pivot to Europe? While we have sold the occasional product to Europe before, our new focus demands we look more closely at how products can be sold from Canada -> Europe with the least amount of fuss for a European customer. Luckily, Canada has a newish trade agreement with the EU called CETA that is designed just for this purpose.

In this episode I describe how I am pivoting our market and even our design & marketing vibe, to sell into Europe. I talk about how I determined what EU tariffs would apply to my products, what extra fees a European customer might pay. It is important to understand this, to know your market, .

I am trying to figure this out now and perhaps I should have done it earlier instead of wasting so much time on America.

It's interesting to see more Canadians start to understand how bad the trade war is now. But Canadian small and medium sized businesses have been dealing with this problem for nearly two years already, and I have been complaining about it here relentlessly.

I have been trying to find a way around america since trump got elected again so I could find other markets for my jewelry products. No luck so far, and that business is now gone even though CUSMA still applies legally and we should have American market access.
The danger for Canada is that our gov will use the trade trauma to further their own interests over and above the interests of ordinary Canadians. A kind of trade war profiteering that will let government  insiders maximize their personal power or profit while the population is panicked, traumatized or afraid.

Watch for it.

This is why we need Parliament back in session and a free press. We have neither. We need Parliament back as this is a national security emergency. Canadians have zero clue what carney will announce in Europe next week, but we should have an idea at least. It is our country here after all, not his. He is only here temporarily. He is keeping Canadians in the dark.
Having lived in war zones and trade war zones before, I suspect the next american bully moves will relate to blocking Canadian business travel or other travel across the border with visa restrictions or large fees or extended visa application cycles, or perhaps brutalizing a Canadian or two at the border crossings which will spread across social media to dissuade Canadians from crossing. Changes to border crossings will be sudden and should be expected soon I think. Shutting Canadian business travelers out of the US can be done with a stroke of a pen by executive order in an instant.

Prepare for this.

I have no confidence in our present government as they have demonstrated no competence in any matter over the last decade. But I have absolute confidence in we Canadians, who may be slow to snap to attention, but clearly define being Canadian as Not Being American. Not being american is exactly right.
I am deeply proud of not being american. My Canadian patriotism is tied to my country very deeply, to the earth here itself, the plants, the animals, the cities, Canada's modern and old history, and not to any politician who happens to be in power.

Google renaming our lakes is last straw. I talk about how I am moving my small tech stack away from Google in particular and US tech companies in general, because they are now all US Department of War defense contractors. I have a long history with the company, but I consider this lake thing an attack on Canadian sovereignty.

As a Canadian, I don't have to subscribe to that and neither should you. I talk about moving our email to Proton in Switzerland by 2027 so the trump government can't read or control our email and so I don't support Google any more with my money.

Lastly, I talk about how it was a provincial premier and not Mark Carney who stopped the bad trade deal with america, and how carney was perfectly willing to sell Canada out again, like he did with the Gordie Howe bridge, and how our state controlled media is trying to re-shape the false narrative of our prime minister standing up to america.

Our government has finally struck back against the american regime for their stupid tariffs, except not until Sept 8. Gym bros in Canada will be hit particularly hard with 50% duty on whey protein and gym equipment. It is all so stupid.

In this episode I talk about what I'll do as a designer now that my export market to the USA has shut for our precious metals jewelry products. A product design came to me that incorporates my anger at the USA so I am making a prototype now. It incorporates Canadian aluminum, Canadian design, and Canadian anger into beautiful organic-shaped hefty key fob aimed at Canadian, US, and Asian customers.

Orange clown's announcement of a 50% tariff on art, craft and jewelry from Canada which was supposed to impact us today has been paused for 3 days. US markets are still closed to Canadian art products because a promise of the tariff 2 weeks ago stopped all sales. Our US market won't re-open in 3 days.

The demented lunatic just has to say he will impose a large tariff on Canada, pull it back, and do it over and over again to destroy our economy.

Our prime minister is a master at making meaningless announcements and should do the same.

Lets have a 900% tariff on Florida oranges to come into effect in 2 weeks. No more caving carney. He will look stronger, more in command, after such an announcement. Or why not a 478% tariff on imported US almonds in 3 weeks time?

Announce that now, and let their industries deal with it.

Our PM has a 4000 person communications staff AND full control of the mainstream news media in Canada so he should use that as a tool for retaliation instead of for self promotion.

But what is the likelihood of that ever happening?

Also I talk about how 2 sticks of RAM that cost $200 a short time ago now costs $1400 and how AI inflated RAM prices are now spreading into laptops, SD cards, and hard disks. All the tools a modern artist needs to produce or sell art.

An inch wide flat fireproof gasket fell into my old-timey-looking wood stove. Contacting the Old Order Mennonites who apparently made the stove by hand is proving difficult because they don't have an email address or use the internet. Once I reach them to get the advice I need to replace the gasket, the woodstove will likely outlast the internet itself. I marvel at how the choice to not use the Internet to better one's community makes a lot of sense these days.

I explore how the Trudeaus seem to be using support of the son's hip hop track to get back at each other over social media and whether that will do anything for Xav's record sales or career. A new genre of state-funded music called NepoHop might emerge from all this in Canada as long as it meets the strict aboriginal and government sexual and racial identity content requirements on art and music Trudeau gave our county.

(But I bet it somehow will).

The Toronto Star Theo Moudakis trump monopoly cartoon which blames Canada's opposition leader for selling out the Gordie Howe Bridge to the Americans is clearly misinformation.

The point of the Moudakis cartoon wasn't to inform, it was to tell readers how to interpret events. Political cartoons are not merely vehicles for propaganda, they are also framing devices.

I hate social media, and I know you do too. As artists, we are being abused by social media platforms' billionaire, bunker-dwelling owners who shape, control, and monetize our art while giving nothing back.

I've had enough of it. In this episode, I describe how I am refusing to use social media as the destination for my art. Instead, people will have to come to my website to see it.

I am even putting extra effort into making it unshareable on social media.

Why? Because I don't want deodorant ads running across my art while others monetize it. I am not even going to host my documentary series on YouTube because I have made a political decision not to host the videos on U.S.-owned platforms because they support the psychotic Trump government.

As artists, we should stand up for our principles, improve the quality of our art, and protect it from tech-bro abuse and monetization. If my work becomes obscure because of this decision, that's fine, because I have never been happier about any decision in my life.

You see it now, don’t you? How AI slop is filling up social media platforms and pushing out authentic or human generated content. How can artists survive and communicate with potential customers when Google won’t tell customers where we are?

I’ve thought about this topic for a long time, decades really, and have no guaranteed answers that will work for you. But here is what I am trying to do, my strategy for tiptoeing around the platforms while connecting directly with the people who want to see my art.

In spite of the website being declared dead because of Google Zero (no referral traffic), I will build a webpage for my content, just like we did in the early days of the Internet. This will be the place to find my art, my photography. Not on Instagram, not on tiktok, not YouTube, but rather on our top level domains tribemagazine.com and tribe.ca .

I am not going to host videos on YouTube because I don’t want deodorant or bubble tea ads running in front of or interrupting my art. Instead, I'm creating a series of short form documentary films about the photography of the rave and house music scenes in Canada in the 1990s and they will live on our web page, not on a third party platform like YouTube or meta, or even Vimeo, which now has new owners

I explain other strategies to avoid social media platforms and how to leverage AI scraping for your benefit.

It’s crazy out there, and while this may sound like throwing spaghetti at a wall, it just might work.

The American business, tech, and media press are saying that people who work with their hands will be fine in spite of the AI onslaught because AI can't do plumbing or sew quilts. But it's really about discovery and distribution. If Google is not providing search results anymore and is just providing "answers," the answers provided will soon be paid for by the highest bidder. Small artists, businesses, us - we won't stand a chance against the U.S. companies that will game the system to put you out of business, because none of us will get discovered, and so we will be unable to sell our art. Worse, AI will steal our art and ideas and present them as its own.

I don't know the answer yet for artists, but we really must think about how we can penetrate the thick AI shell that will envelop everything, whose mission is to conceal our work from the public in order to monetize descriptions of it for tech company profits. It's a frikken nightmare.

On the upside, I watched 11 documentary films (so far) about electronic music and art subcultures, and I recommend the one documentary you must watch. Some of this gritty energy is what we artists will need to battle AI, I think..

 What are studio monitors and why would you need them? How are they different from normal audio speakers? In this episode I talk about how studio monitors are not meant for easy listening, but rather to reveal problems in audio.

Ordinary speakers are meant for audio enjoyment in a multitude of settings. Studio monitors are designed for one specific purpose in a single, highly controlled environment. Woofer color is not important except for the brands to differentiate from each other in the marketing space, studio monitor audio personality is much more important.

Before you purchase studio monitors you should know what type of audio you are going to check. Dance music? Vocals for a documentary film? Video game audio bits? The next winning Eurovision track? After last week’s episode, I bought a groovebox, a music sampler, to start building original sound for my work, including the Preserve the Beat documentary on the birth of electronic music in Canada. I didn’t go for the trendy device, I chose the one that actually fits how I work.

Here’s the problem: most people using samplers today are relying on pre-made sample packs pulled from unknown sources. It’s fine if you’re just messing around, but for commercial work, it’s a risk. A lot of those samples have unclear licensing, questionable origins, and are often resold copies of copies.

And creatively? If you’re using the same sounds as everyone else, your music will sound like everyone else.

There’s also a real danger here: you could spend months, or a year, building a track, only to find you can’t release it because of a single sample buried in the mix. Or worse, your track gets flagged or blocked by automated systems on platforms like YouTube just as it starts gaining traction.

In this episode, I break down why creating your own samples is the smartest move you can make, and how to actually do it. Recording your own sounds gives you a clean ownership chain, total control, and something far more important: originality.

Because at the end of the day, sound is a material. And if you’re serious about your art, you should be shaping it yourself, not assembling it from someone else’s leftovers.

In this show, I describe how the De Beers sight and sightholder system works. It’s an old process (dating back to the 1930s) where a hand-picked buyer is put in a room with hand-picked, uncut stones and intense sales pressure is applied. That system worked well for decades, but its future is now in doubt, as factory-made diamonds are dramatically compressing natural diamond prices.

I also talk about how mines could skip the middlemen — and even the cutters — and sell giant raw diamonds directly to billionaires. As the global economy teeters and many people look to exit U.S.-tied assets, now may be the moment for mines to hire consultants to place massive stones directly with the ultra-wealthy, ahead of auctions. Alternatively, billionaires could hire consultants to secure the absolute best raw stones on the planet for long-term safekeeping. Greenland has some nice rubies and sapphires and they are some of the oldest in the world. The colors of the corundum mined there tend to be in the pink to red color spectrum due to the geology and how the crystals were formed. They would look great in jewelry I think, but that is not the only reason you should consider using them in a design.

A Norwegian company set up a ruby mine in Greenland and has mined some nice stones for the jewelry trade. In this show I explain how micro-fractures in the stones are "healed" to improve their appearance in jewelry and how this is now an accepted practice in the industry and how borax flux healing is used on Greenland rubies.

I discuss about how there may be a way to leverage the current political winds to market jewelry gemstones from Greenland and diamonds from Canada to a world tired of America.

I talk about the raccoon who tried to hang on inside a tree trunk as the tree was being taken down around him and how this feels just like our world today. I describe the difference between downtown Toronto raccoons and normal Canadian raccoons and how I hope to turn part of the property into a chainsaw-carved sculpture garden.

In a year, the United States has turned into a terrorist state and their president into a despotic dictator.

Canadians must rely on ourselves. Let's meet each other, let's get to know our next door neighbors (in Canada), so when the shit hits the fan you can help your neighbor or they can help you. We have to buckle down and get ready. Our Prime Minister is spending more and more time away from Canada and this is not comforting at all. Who will stand up to crazy America? Eventually, someone will, and I think a full blown world war will ensue.

It's not the best time to make art, but I'm still trying, and you know, the ideas are still coming and a beautiful jewelry art piece is already coming together based on an ice cold Canada.

I have a new respect for dangerous jobs as I watch my local tree care company take down two 200 year old trees at the very end of their lifespans. The same will happen to America.

I’m an artist, so I can make exotic predictions.

There’s a lot of political and media analysis in this episode, but if that’s not your thing, you can skip straight to the last 7 minutes.

I’m horribly sick with the flu, and I talk about how sick I am of Canada’s Prime Minister and his pandering to the US President. There is something seriously wrong with a Canadian Prime Minister who won’t wear a Canadian flag on his lapel, yet will proudly wear a special tie for Donald. Yuck.

I’m exhausted by politics, but I talk about it anyway. I don’t understand how the same government that brought us to this place over the last decade can suddenly save us now.

I also unveil several predictions for 2026, including an AI bubble burst and a broader market collapse, likely by the summer.

I talk about how the rich are already moving into non-traditional assets — like large diamonds sold at auction — to hedge against the crash. They’re realizing that massive pools of money will evaporate when the bubble bursts, so they’re scrambling into alternative asset classes. I predict auction houses will be selling trunk-loads of expensive objects as the wealthy freak out.

I predict America will continue its aggression toward Canada to soften us up. They may even target our state-controlled and publicly funded news media in 2026 — and perhaps, as collateral damage, Canada might get a free and fair media landscape again.

I also talk about what Americans aren’t seeing yet: corruption at the top always flows downward, and it will ultimately destroy the economy. Systemic corruption is being baked directly into the system right now.

And yet, despite all of this, there has never been a better time to make art.

So that’s what I’ll be doing next year.

What are photojournalists and why are they important? What do photojournalists seek to accomplish with their art? I'm going to document my experience seeking funding for a book of photography and for a documentary film. I am hoping it will help others who are seeking to fund art. It will be journalism, but also provide the steps I will take to secure or fail to secure funding for my projects. This first part of the series is about getting your thinking clear and straight about what you want to fund and why, before you even think about how much money you will need for your projects.

It turns out the USA states bordering Canada have suffered a 40% drop in Canadian visitors. Canadian senior citizens now get fingerprinted daily by US border patrol agents at entry points, and visitors will be required to provide the US government 5 years of social media history to enter the country. Over 200 Canadians have been arrested, including children, and some sent to American internment camps.

Canadians now realize we don't need to visit America for anything at all, and especially if we get treated like scum for trying to spend our money there.

Is it a restoration? An art project? The Maitland Tower is an incredible historical riverfront property being developed into community art and event spaces by Philip Ling. I went upriver to have a look, and learned how this project combines the modern and the old in new ways that will grow art in South Eastern Ontario.

I also talk about why it's important to license creative work from artists instead of stealing it for commercial purposes.

As podcasts I once trusted for news, journalism, and truth become chat shows or mouthpieces for a handful of US tech companies trying to justify their extreme valuations, I take a step back and consider if I really need their advertorial content or banter. I am cutting them out of my life becausethey are spreading slop now too.

I talk about how emotionally trying it can be for an artist to look at work they produced when young. There are a lot of reasons why artists can’t look back and I explain some of them.

One of the greatest human experiences you can have is when you resonate with an artist's work, or it resonates with you on some almost unconscious level.

Petr Válek's synthesizers are hand-built from found materials and embellished with designs coming from a very deep place in a rural area in the Czech Republic. They are also fun and comical. How can an art object contain such multitudes? How can I buy one of these for my own studio?

In the second half of the show I talk about all the big diamonds turning up at auction houses as the rich try to unload and go liquid to face an impending market crash.

My thought is that the Mellon Blue auction price signified the peak of diamond auction prices. I explore why certain diamonds sell for more than others and also speculate as to the the value of Taylor Swift's engagement ring diamond in a hundred years.
