Lots of training for Canine Hoopers can look similar. Although there will be differences between what instructors choose to teach first and a beginners course syllabus. Here I share a glimpse at what my Beginners Course can look like. As always its not set in stone as it is adapted to the dogs and owners within the class. Also dogs like us can have off days. Not every dog immediately thrives in the Hoopers competition ring. Some dogs stress down and are easily spotted , some stress up and some dogs are just over aroused. Some of the basics are a good starting point for all dogs. Some issues need specific steps to help build the confidence ready for the show environment. It can take a very long time and its important to go at the dog's pace.

Sometimes Hoopers can be a dog's first experience of training and it works . Other times we need to put a dog trainers hat on rather than the Hoopers trainers hat. Don't give up , with the right help training can enhance your relationship and your dog's behaviour. Any breed can do Hoopers just some need a bigger support network and to concentrate on the small stuff first.

In this episode we talk about everything from choosing a puppy for Canine Hoopers , to rough outlines of what I like to do training wise with young dogs. Life skills is a big part of young dog training for us and is hugely beneficial for dogs if they are to be successful and happy doing the sport we enjoy.

This episode looks at the routine I follow for my warm up /cool down with my border collie Blitz. I find having a routine helps prepare us both physically and mentally for running the Hoopers course.

It also can highlight areas to keep an eye on that may need attention whilst they are just a niggle before they become a major concern.

The actual Hoopers training is the exciting bit ,so in the hot spell we are having ,its a great chance to get back on track and write down those training plans. Detailed training plans are key to progress and succesful training, else we probably won't train the actual bits we need to progress. Utilising my Hoopers diary to see what we have struggled with and transferring that to an actionable plan.

The story behind our choice of Charity this year Pumpkin & Friends - a personal story about our youngest Border collie Chase who had to retire early from all sports last November.

A still undiagnosed condition that has took us down numerous rabbit holes searching for answers. My strong resiliant Chase has adapted multiple times throughout the last 7 months ,such a happy boy despite what he has had to deal with.

Training you know what to do - the exercises , the timing and rewards - but there's something missing. Why I believe listening to our dogs and trying to understand how they are feeling can really help our partnership.
