Inside Your Mind: Chronic Illness & The Voices in Your Head03 Feb 202500:45:31
This week on Calling in Sick, it’s just me, Alex, taking you inside my brain—literally. Inspired by Inside Out, I’m breaking down the real voices that fill the mind of a chronically ill person—the ones that tell us we’re a burden, that every symptom is an emergency, or that we’re not doing “enough” to get better. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. In this episode, I’m sharing: 🧠 How chronic illness fuels negative self-talk (and how to fight back) 😨 Why anxiety makes every symptom feel like a crisis 😞 The truth about guilt & why you are NOT a burden 🔥 How anger can be both destructive and empowering 😂 The unexpected superpowers chronic illness gives us (dark humor, anyone?) If you’ve ever felt trapped in your own mind—stuck in a cycle of fear, frustration, and self-doubt—this episode is for you. Chronic illness already makes life hard. Let’s make sure our own thoughts aren’t making it harder. Which voice takes over your brain the most? Comment below or DM me on IG (@callinginsickpod)! Living Undiagnosed: Alex Gray’s Chronic Illness Journey02 Dec 202401:47:31
This week on Calling in Sick, I sit down with Alex Gray (@alexogray), UK-based TV presenter, actress, and founder, to reflect on her journey with chronic illness. We unpack the toll of hustle culture on health, the disorienting feeling of being a stranger in your own body, and the challenges of navigating life without a clear diagnosis. We explore how chronic illness reshapes relationships - the weight of masking our reality, facing disbelief and misunderstanding, and learning to pick our battles while still finding compassion for ourselves and others. Our conversation also touches on how chronic illness transforms identity and mental health, from the exhaustion of constant perseverance to discovering strength in slowing down and living authentically. One Monday, double the Alex, triple the laughter — join for an honest conversation about life and relationships while being chronically ill. Sending everyone love and hugs - and thanks for Calling in Sick with me! xx, Alex Timestamps: 00:00:00 Welcome back to Calling In Sick!  00:02:55 Alex’s Health/Life Update 00:13:05 Alex’s Wellness Picks of the Week 00:16:50 Introduction to Alex Gray (@alexogray), UK-based TV presenter, actress, and founder 00:25:30 Alex’s first symptoms 00:32:15 Alex’s journey to diagnosis 00:51:00 Alex’s feelings around her chronic illness diagnosis 01:02:45 Friendship & chronic illness 01:06:15 Family & chronic illness 01:15:00 Masking your chronic illness 01:24:04 Roses & Thorns of chronic illness 01:38:40 Thank you for listening!  ---------------------------------------------------------------- Stay connected and follow social: • Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/callinginsickpod/ • TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@callinginsickpod • Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61558234607568 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Powered by: Just Media House -- https://www.justmediahouse.com/ Produced by: Alexandra Wildeson — https://www.instagram.com/alexandrawildeson/ #chronicillnesssupport #livingwithautoimmunedisease #healthandwellness #podcast #podcastclips #chronicillnessidentity #celiacdisease #alexogray #alexgray Learn more about your ad choices. How to Survive the Holiday Season with a Chronic Illness25 Nov 202401:08:11
In this week’s episode of Calling in Sick, I go into depth on how to navigate the holiday season with a chronic illness. It is *so* easy to over do it, when everyone around you is baking Pinterest worthy desserts and listing all the things they’re thankful for… like their health. We have to think through the logistics of traveling (if you haven’t, go watch episode 11 for more tips), socializing, and saving our spoons. We have to figure out how to effectively communicate boundaries with everything from our emotions to food sensitivities or allergies (keep that pecan pie AWAY!). Beyond that, this time of year is full of emotions, good and bad. We reflect on the year as a whole, how this season would be different if our health was better and comparing ourselves to peers and family that just don’t struggle the same way. From my thoughts on why this joyful season can be challenging as a sick chick to my how-to’s on navigating gatherings and spoon usage, I talk about it ALL in this holiday survival guide. Sending everyone my love, hugs and a spare spoon this holiday season - thanks for Calling in Sick with me this Thanksgiving!  xx, Alex Timestamps:  00:00:00 Welcome back to Calling In Sick!  00:02:25 Alex’s Health Update 00:13:45 Alex’s 21 Days to Less Anxiety Challenge  00:15:15 Alex’s Wellness Picks of the Week 00:18:22 Navigating the holiday season with a Chronic Illness 00:20:50 Combatting the energy toll of the holidays 00:25:30 Holiday-specific travel tips 00:27:55 Reflection during the holiday season 00:36:20 Internalized perception during the holiday season 00:46:30 Proactive communication with others 00:53:50 My #1 tip for thriving this holiday season 00:56:00 Recouping after the holidays 01:00:05 Thank you for listening!  ---------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you to the sponsors for this episode:  For a limited time, use the code “CallingInSick” for 25% off your first session on Malla.co. How to Travel with a Chronic Illness04 Nov 202500:52:47
In this week’s episode of Calling in Sick, I share my how-to guide on navigating travel with a chronic illness. Travel is supposed to be a relaxing and enjoyable break from “real life,” but when you’re dealing with a chronic illness, it can be incredibly overwhelming. From anxiety about how “able” you are, to internalized pressure on having the “perfect” get away, and realizing the impact of brain fog on planning… you are not alone in these worries! Not to forget the mental gymnastics of battling guilt for being stressed! If you want your next trip to go a bit smoother, look no further! Tune in to this week’s episode to hear what you need to pack in your suitcase versus your carry on and my top 5 most important things to travel with. You’ll leave this episode feeling more prepared and less anxious for your next trip. Processing Your Chronic Illness and Redefining Your Identity04 Nov 202400:59:21
In this week’s solo episode of Calling in Sick, I dive into the reality of processing and shifting our identity due to a Chronic Illness, whether you have an official diagnosis or not. I talk about the struggles that come from comparing ourselves to others and how we define self-worth, especially relative to our life before getting sick. The discussion also sheds light on how often we feel misunderstood and feel like we have to “look sick” in a particular ways to get care. Most importantly though, I touch on how processing a chronic illness looks and feels a lot like the grief curve. As always, I offer anecdotes of my own journey with processing my new identity and share some tips and tricks that have helped me navigate these topics. My hopes are this episode has you nodding “me too!” and that you can walk away feeling comfort that you are not alone in this journey. Using Comedy to Cope with Chronic Illness28 Oct 202401:27:24
In this episode of Calling in Sick, I sat down with the incredibly funny and sweet Alexandra Kopko. You may know her from her TikTok @alexandrawideeyes, where she uses her incredibly relatable sense of humor to create educational and absolutely hysterical content about living and thriving with a chronic illness. We talk about navigating your way to a diagnosis in your 20s and the funny-not-funny snafus that arose along the way - like doctors that don’t believe you and grieving your precious healthy self. I hope you this Monday’s episode makes you laugh as much as I did — my face actually hurt from smiling and laughing so much.  Timestamps:  00:00:00 Welcome back to another episode of Calling In Sick! 00:01:30 Alex’s Catch Up and Health Status 00:08:00 Alex’s Wellness Picks 00:11:45 Introducing Alexandra Kopka (@alexandrawideeyes) 00:16:30 Alex’s Diagnosis Story 00:36:30 Getting doctors to take you seriously  00:45:20 Using comedy to cope with chronic illness 00:49:30 Health anxiety 00:55:40 Chronic illness on social media 01:09:50 The “Spoon-ion” 01:13:00 Are their negative repercussions to joking about chronic illness? 01:18:30 Thank you for listening!  ---------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you to our sponsors this week: Malla - Go to Malla.co and use code “CallingInSick” for 25% off your first session. Pain Reprocessing Therapy Deep Dive: Helping Chronic Pain ft. Vanessa Blackstone, MSW, ACSW (Part 2)30 Dec 202401:01:15
This week on Calling in Sick, join me for Part 2 of my two-part series with Vanessa Blackstone, MSW, ACSW, and Executive Director of the Pain Psychology Center. In Part 1, we explored Vanessa’s personal journey with chronic pain and introduced Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)—a method that helps retrain the brain to interpret and respond to pain signals differently. Now, in Part 2, we’re diving deeper into the science behind PRT, discussing its potential benefits for those with structural damage and chronic illness, and addressing common misconceptions around PRT. If you’ve ever been skeptical about pain management approaches, you’re not alone—I feel the same. But my hope is that after listening to this series, we’ll both walk away with new tools to address our pain, renewed optimism for what’s possible and a path to living a better life. With a new year on the horizon, why not embrace hope that chronic pain can improve?! Actually Helpful New Year’s Resolutions for People with Chronic Illness 16 Dec 202400:48:18
I can’t believe it… we’re nearing the end of 2024! So this week, we’re Calling in Sick to ditch the pressure of traditional New Year’s resolutions and create a plan that actually works — chronic illness style. The end of the year can feel like a mixed bag of emotions: gratitude, grief, hope, and even exhaustion. And guess what? That’s totally okay. In this episode, I’m sharing how to reflect, reset, and set meaningful goals — without the toxic positivity or all-or-nothing mindset. I’m breaking down my Annual Audit & New Year Action Plan, a guided process for looking back with compassion and moving forward with purpose. We’ll chat about redefining success, embracing small wins, and designing routines that work on both high- and low-energy days. It’s all about setting intentions that honor your reality while still creating space for growth. Grab a notebook, get cozy, and let’s build out next year in a way that feels good — one small step at a time. Sending so much love, light, and strength as we step into this new year together! xx, Alex PS: Join the group-chat on Instagram to participate in the 21-day challenge here! https://www.instagram.com/j/AbaZDVK6W9TE9fyg/ Timestamps:  00:00:00 Welcome back to Calling In Sick!  00:04:08 - Alex Health Updates  00:09:20 - New 21 Day Challenge 00:11:42 - Alex’s Picks of the Week 00:13:45 - Facing the New Year & End of Year Highlight Reels with a Chronic Illness 00:21:15 - Setting Goals: Cooper and My Year End Audit 00:27:12 - What I Learned in 2024 00:33:08 - Building a New Year Intentions Action Plan, Chronic Illness Edition 00:39:00 - Why Reflecting on Your Last Year is Important 00:41:35 - Biggest Episode Takeaways 00:43:25- Thank you for listening!  ---------------------------------------------------------------- Stay connected and follow social: • Instagram -- https://www.instagram.com/callinginsickpod/ • TikTok -- https://www.tiktok.com/@callinginsickpod • Facebook -- https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61558234607568 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Powered by: Just Media House -- https://www.justmediahouse.com/ Produced by: Alexandra Wildeson -- https://www.instagram.com/alexandrawildeson/ Shop this Episode: https://shopmy.us/collections/1104872 Alex’s Picks of the Week: 1. Understanding Chronic Pain with a Chronic Illness09 Dec 202400:50:19
This week, we’re Calling in Sick for the very first episode dedicated to PAIN—one of the most universal yet misunderstood experiences in the chronic illness community. Chronic pain is complex, persistent, and deeply personal, which is why I’m kicking off a special series exploring this topic. In this week’s episode, I open up about my personal journey with pain, from childhood episodes to managing chronic pain as an adult. I break down the different types of pain, explain why it’s so challenging to diagnose and treat, and highlight the often-overlooked impact chronic pain has on mental health. I also share practical tips for describing pain more effectively to healthcare providers and walk you through 5 essential pain-management toolboxes that have helped me along the way. Finally, I’m launching a 21-Day Challenge designed to help us all build new tools for managing pain together. Join me on Instagram (@alexandrawildeson) for this journey toward better understanding, compassion, and self-care. How I Handle the Fear of Flaring & Failing with Chronic Illness10 Mar 202500:39:12
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m getting real about the mental gymnastics of navigating chronic illness—especially when you're constantly balancing fear of flaring, fear of failing, and the never-ending cycle of medical uncertainty. February was a lot, even for a girl who’s been sick her whole life. From 2 rounds of chemotherapy, to surgery, to 5 days of IVIG, to balancing work and content creation while managing life, this month really put my “pivoting” skills to the test. And that got me thinking…How do we live fully while managing predictable unpredictability? How do we take risks when we know there’s a chance our bodies might betray us? What It’s REALLY Like to Recover from Endometriosis Surgery03 Mar 202500:55:18
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m taking you inside my latest surgery—my second endometriosis excision surgery. If you’ve been through it, you know: endo surgery is no joke. Revisit: Processing Your Chronic Illness and Redefining Your Identity04 Nov 202500:54:29
Hey sweet friends—no full episode this week, just a short 10-minute update from me. Between a rough IVIG reaction, an unexpected ER trip, and a literal attempted home invasion (yes, really), I’m throwing it back to a past episodes: Processing Your Chronic Illness—because wow, I need to listen to this one this week too!! This week on Calling in Sick, I’m diving into something that doesn’t get talked about enough: the identity shift that happens when you're living with a chronic illness — whether you have an official diagnosis or not. There’s a specific kind of grief that comes from realizing you're no longer the person you once were. The person who had endless energy. The person who didn’t have to think twice about plans, goals, or dreams. The person who didn’t wonder, "Do I look sick enough for people to take me seriously?" In this solo episode, I’m opening up about: 💭 How chronic illness impacts your sense of self (even before a diagnosis) ⚡ Why comparison — to others and to your old self — can feel so brutal 🩺 The silent pressure to “look” sick enough for care 🧠 How processing a chronic illness mirrors the stages of grief 📚 Plus: My tips, tricks, and personal mindset shifts that have helped me find myself again If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and thought, "I don’t even recognize my life anymore," — this one’s for you. You are not alone in this identity shift. You are not broken. You are just becoming someone new. Thanks for Calling in Sick with me again — xx, Alex 💛 💬 Comment: What’s been the hardest part of your chronic illness identity shift? How Chronic Illness Changes Our Definition of Ambition and Drive14 Apr 202500:28:58
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m getting real about something I never thought I’d question: Am I still ambitious? There was a time when I crushed my to-do list before lunch, never let an email sit unanswered, and found purpose in being productive. But now? I procrastinate. I forget things. I carry a running to-do list that I never finish. And between the brain fog, pain, meds, and fatigue… I started to wonder if I’d lost my drive entirely. But then it hit me… maybe ambition just looks different now. In this solo episode, I’m opening up about: 💭 What it’s like to lose your “high-functioning” self 💊 The quiet shame of feeling dulled by meds 🔥 How chronic illness reroutes your ambition from speed to survival 🌱 Why softness, slowness, and intention might be the new success 📺 Plus: My current comfort-watch in the One Brain Cell segment (spoiler: it’s called warm hug in TV form) This one is for anyone navigating big identity shifts—especially if you’ve had to ask yourself: “Who am I without the hustle?” My answer? Darling... you’re not behind. You’re becoming. xx, Alex 💛 💬 Comment: Do you feel like your ambition or drive has changed since getting sick? How have you redefined success? Kwame Appiah (Love is Blind) Opens Up About Chronic Illness and Healing07 Apr 202501:11:09
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m joined by the incredible Kwame Appiah—someone you might recognize from Love Is Blind (Season 4), but today, we’re going far deeper than reality TV. Kwame opens up about his real-life health journey: the early signs he ignored, the emotional toll of not having answers, and what it meant to finally get a diagnosis—and then face the hard work of rebuilding from there. We talk about the frustrations of navigating a broken healthcare system, the grief and grit that come wit h chronic illness, and how healing isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, relational, and deeply personal. My favorite part? Kwame’s take on gratitude, growth, and positivity. We also dive into how illness reshapes not just our bodies, but our relationships—with others and with ourselves. In this episode, we unpack: ⚡️ The moment Kwame knew he couldn’t keep ignoring his body 🌀 The emotional rollercoaster of chasing a diagnosis 💬 How his relationship with Chelsea evolved through it all 🧠 The shift from shame to self-trust 📺 Plus: our favorite shows in this week’s One Brain Cell segment (spoiler: we couldn’t pick just one) This episode is vulnerable, honest, and a reminder that chronic illness doesn’t define you—but it can transform you. As always, sending my love! xx, Alex 💛 💬 Comment Prompt: What’s one health lesson you had to learn the hard way—but now wouldn’t trade? The Blueprint to Making New Friends with a Chronic Illness31 Mar 202500:39:26
This week on Calling in Sick, we’re talking about something that’s both terrifying and beautiful: how to make new friends when you’re chronically ill. Let’s be real—chronic illness changes your social life. While some relationships run the distance, there are far too many that end… some fade out, some end loudly and some just stop making sense. But as painful as that can be, it also creates space. Space for people who get it. Who don’t need explanations. Who meet you where you are now. In this episode, I’m unpacking: 🌿 How chronic illness can be a filter for real, aligned friendships 💔 Why losing friends isn’t always a failure—it’s often a shift ✨ How to make new friends that actually work for your energy, needs, and lifestyle 🧃 What “low-spoon friendship” looks like and why it’s actually magic 📱 Where to find spoonie friends who get you This isn’t just about friendship breakups—it’s about friendship breakthroughs. Sending love (and new friend energy)! xx, Alex 💛 💬 This week’s Comment Prompt: What is one thing you are putting on your “talking-points” list for chatting with new friends? How to Rest Without Guilt When You’re Chronically Ill24 Mar 202500:41:22
This week on Calling in Sick, we’re talking about one of the most underrated tools in the chronic illness toolbox: the intentional duvet day. If you’ve ever felt guilty for resting, questioned if you're "sick enough" to slow down, or struggled to explain why you need a full day in bed after a good day—this episode is for you. I unpack why these days are essential for long-term management (not lazy days!), how to spot your “check engine lights” before a crash, and how I’ve learned to communicate my need for deep rest without feeling like a burden. So tune in to hear: ✨ My favorite Duvet Day skincare & hydration essentials (hello dewy skin girlies!) 🛏️ What a Duvet Day actually is (and how to make it restorative, not just reactive) 🎁 Why receiving care is not a weakness—and how to reframe the guilt 💡 How to explain your needs to others using Spoon Theory & the Stoplight Framework 📺 One Brain Cell rec of the week: Drive to Survive and why I’m suddenly a motorsport girlie now For this week, put your latest hyper-fixation during duvet days in the comments section!! Your Productivity Does NOT Determine Your Worth: Redefining Success with Chronic Illness17 Mar 202500:36:31
This week on Calling in Sick, we’re diving deep into a topic that I think so many of us—especially those with chronic illness—struggle with: the link between productivity and self-worth. I’ll be honest, old habits die hard, and my first Monday back after treatment? Yeah… I went full steam ahead. And guess what? It didn’t go well. But that got me thinking: why is it so hard to detach my value from what I do? Why does rest feel like failure, even when I know better? So, in this episode, I’m unpacking: 🔥 The cycle of overwork, crashing, and repeat (why do we do this?!) ⚖️ Why chronic illness makes productivity so complicated (and what we can do about it) 🧠 The identity shift of redefining success I want to hear from you! Surviving Life Chaos & Chronic Illness Flares - One ER trip and Home Invasion At a Time28 Apr 202500:38:50
This week on Calling in Sick, things are a little different — and a little chaotic. I was too discombobulated to record a solo episode, so Cooper (my husband) hopped on the mic with me. We laughed, we spiraled, and then we got real about why life has felt so hard lately: In this week’s episode, we talk: 💥 A nasty IVIG reaction 🚑 A surprise ER trip 🛑 A home invasion 💉 Starting a new oral chemo 🏡 Family visiting 🫠 And feeling... not like myself at all We talk about what it’s like when everything hits at once, and how chronic illness can make navigating life with a chronic illness that much harder. Even though it’s been overwhelming (to put it lightly), there’s something comforting about saying it all out loud — and laughing through the absurdity when we can. This episode is for anyone who feels like they’re in survival mode and missing the person they used to be. You’re not broken. You’re carrying more than most people can even imagine. Thanks for Calling in Sick with us this week! xx, Alex & Saint Coop 💬 Comment: what’s your number one tool for getting back to feeling like yourself? Sasha Pieterse-Sheaffer on Chronic Illness, Identity & Healing in the Public Eye09 Jun 202501:19:30
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m joined by the one and only, Sasha Pieterse-Sheaffer — who you might know from her starting role in Pretty Little Liars or Inherent Vice. Today, Sasha spends her time as an actor, podcaster, founder, advocate, and fellow chronic illness warrior. We sat down and talked about her real life plot twist: getting diagnosed with PCOS and epilepsy, navigating autoimmune symptoms, and redefining herself while the world was watching. We also chat:🎥 What it was like getting sick in the public eye, without a formal diagnosis🗞 The internet’s reaction to body changes — and reclaiming the narrative👶 Motherhood, identity shifts, and the “new you” that chronic illness brings💬 The mantras, mindsets & moments that get her through the hard stuff Sasha shares her raw truth about rebuilding trust with her body, the hardest lessons she’s learned, and the surprising silver linings she’s found along the way. Whether you're in the thick of chasing a diagnosis or learning to live life on new terms, this episode is a gentle reminder: you are not alone, and healing doesn’t mean going back — it means going forward as someone new. Why Eastern Medicine Works for Chronic Illness, with Dr. Jennifer Ashby02 Jun 202501:23:31
This week on Calling in Sick, we’re getting grounded, energized, and totally fascinated by the ancient wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). I’m joined by Dr. Jennifer Ashby — a TCM doctor at UCSF — to explore the intersection of Eastern and Western care for whole-person healing. We get into the foundational teachings of TCM, the biggest surprises patients experience when they first try it, and how it’s being used right now in hospital settings like UCSF (yes, really!!). We also talk: 📣 Why TCM is so much more than acupuncture & herbs 🧠 The reason why TCM doesn’t separate mind, body & spirit 🌊 Micro-changes that have macro impacts to our health 📦 Why what you think impacts how you feel Whether you’re new to holistic wellness or just tired of treating symptoms without addressing the why — this one’s full of grounding insight, accessible tools, and (as always) a little cozy chaos. Extra benefit... Dr. Ashby is one of the most relaxing humans I've had the pleasure of being around... she is Xanax in human form. Too Sick for School, Too Sick for Fun? Chronic Illness Guilt and the Rebellion of Joy16 Jun 202500:27:22
I’m back on the mic this week after a little solo pod pause — and I’m kicking things off with something I’ve been thinking about (and living) a lot lately: joy guilt. You know that old rule: “If you’re too sick to go to school, you’re too sick to have fun?” Yeah, that one. Turns out, it doesn’t translate to life with chronic illness. But we still carry it — and it quietly shapes how we see ourselves, how we mask, and how we justify joy when we’re supposed to be struggling. In this episode, I dig into: 💭 Why we fear being seen laughing or “doing too well” 😰 The guilt spiral when symptoms shift — and the fear of not being believed 🎭 How chronic illness can force us to perform misery to protect our empathy 🔥 The lies we were taught about rest, pain, and productivity 🩵 And the truth: Joy is not a betrayal. It’s part of the healing You don’t need to earn your joy. You don’t have to be falling apart to rest. You are not required to apologize for your life, your sparkle, or your softness. So f*@k it — I’m having fun. And I hope you will too. Thanks for Calling in Sick with me 💛 xx, Alex 💬 Comment : Have you ever felt like you had to downplay your joy just to be taken seriously? I Need Boundaries With Myself?! Chronic Illness, Overdoing It, and Knowing When to Sit Down05 Nov 202500:35:23
Last week, we talked about giving ourselves permission to have fun — but this week? We’re swinging the pendulum back the other way. Because I made zero adjustments and just had fun… which was great until it wasn’t. Truth is, one of the hardest people to set boundaries with is actually ourselves. In this episode, I talk through what it looks like to chase joy, crash hard, and try to recover without beating yourself up. Spoiler alert: I’m recording this after two straight days of IVIG, so I’m right in the thick of it. Here’s what we get into: 🚷 Why we need to set boundaries with ourselves to make life sustainable 🧳 The “oops I had fun and now I’m in spoon jail” cycle 🌿 Ottine road trips, mineral springs, and my new “Come With Me” content series 🪑 The adjustments I’m making in real time This one’s for the people who are 0 or 100, all or nothing, go-go-go until your joints give out. You’re not lazy. You’re not failing. You’re just human — and that’s more than enough. Chronic Illness & the Groundhog Day Effect30 Jun 202500:33:18
Welcome back to another week of Calling in Sick! The past two episodes were all about setting boundaries with ourselves so we can choose joy more often. And this week? Let’s just say I’m still paying off my Spoonie Jail invoice… and unfortunately, there’s no early release for good behavior. 😅 When flare days stretch into flare weeks (or months), it starts to feel like you’re living the same day over and over again. I call it the Chronic Illness Groundhog Day effect — and I know I’m not alone. This week, I’m breaking down: 🧠 Why time gets weird when you're sick (yep, there's actual neuroscience behind it) 😵‍💫 The “oops-I-had-fun” crash cycle + how to set better boundaries with yourself 🌟 My go-to brain hack to feel momentum—even from bed (escape the loop!) ✨ A peek into my new “Come With Me” series for chronic-illness-friendly escapes Whether you’re stuck on the couch or just tired of feeling stuck, this convo is your permission slip to reclaim time, joy, and a little sparkle! The Top 3 Things Trauma Therapy Has Taught Me So Far29 Jul 202500:26:24
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m pulling back the curtain on something I’ve never really talked about in depth: trauma therapy. Not wellness aesthetic therapy. Not “journal and manifest” therapy. Real, gritty, life-interrupting trauma therapy. In this episode, I’m sharing: 🧠 What trauma therapy actually is — and why I started ⚠️ Why I was afraid when life started to feel… good 💊 How my mindset has changed on medical trauma & how it affects my daily life 🛑 If I think trauma therapy is financially, physically and emotionally worth it From childhood illness to hospital PTSD, I’ve carried more “little t” trauma, or what I thought was “little t” trauma, than I realized… and trauma therapy has helped me stop minimizing it. This isn’t a step-by-step guide or a promise of a fix. It’s just me, sharing what I’ve learned so far. So whether you’re considering therapy, afraid to open that door, or deep in your own healing arc — this episode is for you. Sending my love, as always! xx, Alex 💬 Comment: What’s one thing therapy helped you realize… even if you weren’t ready to hear it? Dr. Karan Rajan on Medical Dismissal, Chronic Illness, and the Rise of Health Misinformation 14 Jul 202501:22:55
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m joined by the one and only Dr. Karan Rajan (@dr-karan-explores) — NHS surgeon, educator, and one of the most trusted voices cutting through health misinformation on TikTok. This episode is all about the emotional and medical consequences of constant dismissal and gaslighting — especially for women and people with chronic illness. When you’re told “it’s just anxiety” over and over again, it’s no wonder so many patients turn to the internet in search of answers. And unfortunately? The internet doesn’t always get it right. We’re digging into: 💭 Why “you’re just anxious” has become medicine’s favorite (and a dangerous) catch-all 🧠 How being dismissed by doctors leads patients toward TikTok, Instagram, and wellness rabbit holes 🔍 Why some unlicensed “experts” thrive online — and how to navigate health content without shame or pseudoscience 🗣️ Real advice for self-advocacy at medical appointments 💚 The one thing Dr. Karan wishes medicine had more of Whether you’ve walked out of a doctor’s office questioning your reality, or found yourself spiraling through symptoms, supplements, and side effects — this episode is your reminder: You’re not alone.
