در فاصله‌ی مرگ پتر کبیر تا ظهور کاترین کبیر، روسیه وارد یکی از تاریک‌ترین و بی‌ثبات‌ترین دوره‌های تاریخ خود شد؛ دورانی که در آن تاج‌وتخت، بیشتر از آنکه با قانون به دست بیاید، با کودتا، خیانت و توطئه جابه‌جا می‌شد.
در این اپیزود وارد کاخی می‌شویم که دیوارهایش شاهد سقوط پادشاهان، قتل‌های خاموش، امپراتوران کودک، ملکه‌های جاه‌طلب و اشرافی بوده‌اند که برای رسیدن به قدرت از هیچ کاری دریغ نمی‌کردند. هر تزار با این تصور بر تخت می‌نشست که قرار است امپراتوری را نجات دهد، اما خیلی زود خودش قربانی همان بازی مرگباری می‌شد که پیش از او دیگران را بلعیده بود.
این، داستان انقلاب‌های درون قصری روسیه است؛ دورانی که انگار خودِ کاخ نفرین شده بود و هر کسی پا به آن می‌گذاشت، دیر یا زود سرنوشتی تلخ در انتظارش بود.
