Hey Podcasters!

At Buzzsprout, most of our collaboration happens through screens. Messages, calls, and pull requests keep everything moving, but once a year, we step away from our desks and meet face-to-face.

This year, we gathered in Tampa, Florida so our fully remote team could reconnect, build trust, and spend time together. Here’s a look behind the scenes at our week!

Kicking Things Off

We started in Ybor City, where our digital avatars turned back into real people. We hosted a Buzzsprout Podcaster Meetup at Oxford Exchange!

Meeting local podcasters was a highlight! Hearing their stories and seeing their excitement reminded us that behind every show are real people using Buzzsprout to share their voices with the world.

Serving and Building

Wednesday morning, we cooked lunch for families at the Ronald McDonald House. It was a small way to serve the community, a chance to work together in a new way, and a time to reflect on how fortunate we are.

That afternoon, we gathered for a Buzzsprout positioning workshop to brainstorm how we can better support podcasters and keep creativity alive. These are the kinds of conversations that come to life when we’re in the same room.

We left with fresh ideas, and we're excited for you to see the results over the next few months.

A Grateful Look Back

Thursday blended reflection and celebration! We kicked off with our State of the Product, sharing wins, challenges, and lessons from the past year. One theme stood out: meaningful progress built through teamwork.

There was plenty of fun, too! Our team enjoyed a Tampa Bay Lightning game, friendly competition at PopStroke, and lots of great food.

Our time in Tampa wasn’t time away from work; it was time that makes the work better. The relationships we build in person shape how we collaborate, solve problems, and support podcasters all year long.

Our co-founder, Kevin Finn, recapped the week on the Buzzsprout blog and shared more about why we continue investing in time together!

How to Make Money Podcasting in 202528 Oct 202500:02:25

Send a question for 'Ask Megan'

Hey Podcasters! When Buzzsprout's podcast producer, Jordan Blair, started Dreamful Bedtime Stories, it was just a creative way to help her kids fall asleep.

She never expected it to become a podcast with more than 13 million downloads, or that she’d test nearly every monetization strategy along the way.

After six years of experimenting with sponsorships, affiliates, subscriptions, and listener support, she’s learned what actually works (and what doesn’t) when it comes to making money from a podcast.

Here’s a quick look at her biggest lessons:

1. Don’t Monetize Too Soon
Jumping in too early can do more harm than good.

Jordan tried it all, from merch to premium content and even ad reads, but she realized that monetization works best when it enhances your show, not distracts from it.

Start monetizing when it feels like a natural next step, not a side hustle.

2. Start Small With Listener Support
Before chasing big sponsors, start with listener support. It’s an easy way to test interest and build the habit of asking for support from your audience.

If listeners are willing to chip in a few dollars, that’s proof that your content resonates!

3. Choose Partners That Fit
Jordan’s first sponsor was a $300 deal with a small wellness brand.

It wasn’t flashy, but it taught her how to negotiate and partner with brands that actually align with her audience. Which was more valuable long-term.

4. Keep It Transparent
The FTC now requires clear disclosures for sponsorships and affiliate links, which include podcasts!

A quick “This episode is sponsored by…” is all it takes to stay compliant and maintain trust.

There’s no single path to podcast monetization, but there is a smarter one. On the Buzzsprout blog, Jordan breaks down real examples and lessons from six years of testing every major strategy, so you can find what works for your show.

Hey Podcasters! We just got back from Podcast Movement in Dallas, and it was awesome to connect with so many Buzzsprout podcasters in person!

This year’s conference introduced a new format with silent-disco style headphones and featured plenty of conversations about where podcasting is headed.

If you couldn’t make it, don’t worry, our producer Jordan sat down with top speakers to hear their best advice from the conference. From choosing the right monetization strategy to using SEO for discovery, the common theme was clear: small shifts in strategy can create big opportunities for growth.

You can hear all the takeaways and full conversations in this week’s episode of Buzzcast. Listen wherever you get your podcasts, and text us what you think!

Endless Inspiration for Your Podcast 19 Aug 202500:01:43

Send a question for 'Ask Megan'

Hey Podcasters!

Coming up with new episode ideas can feel easy in the beginning, but a few months in, it’s common to hit a wall. If you’ve ever sat down to record and thought, “What am I even going to talk about this week?” you’re not alone.

In this week’s episode of Buzzcast, Jordan and Alban sit down with Dave Jackson from School of Podcasting to talk about how to never run out of ideas for your podcast. Dave’s been podcasting for over 20 years and has launched more than 30 shows, so he can relate to what it’s like to run out of ideas. But he also knows how to get inspired again.

The conversation covers everything from how to build an ongoing idea bank to how to stay in tune with your audience so your episodes always feel relevant. Dave also shares personal stories from his own shows, including times he’s rebranded or moved on to something new to keep content fresh.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re out of ideas or just out of motivation, this episode is for you!

You can listen to the full episode wherever you get your podcasts, and text us what you think!

And if you want even more inspiration, here are a few helpful resources for planning future content:

My favorite takeaway from the episode is that podcasting gets easier when you stop chasing perfect ideas and start paying closer attention to your curiosity and your energy. Those are often where your best episodes start.

How to Sound Better Without Buying New Gear12 Aug 202500:01:09

Hey, Podcasters! This week, we’re sharing one of the easiest ways to improve your sound without new equipment: microphone technique!

With a few easy mic technique tweaks, you can get cleaner, more consistent audio.

We’ve pulled together resources to help you get started:

And if you don't have a mic yet, here's our top recommendation

Mic technique might feel unfamiliar at first, but it quickly becomes second nature. Even small adjustments can make a big difference in how your audience hears you.

Designing Podcast Artwork to Get Clicks 05 Aug 202500:03:38

Send a question for 'Ask Megan'

Hey, Podcasters! Let’s be honest: we all judge podcasts by their cover.

In fact, 62% of new listeners are more likely to check out a podcast if they like the cover art. That means your artwork isn’t just a placeholder, it’s your show’s first impression! And that can either be a good thing or a bad thing.

Here's how to make sure your artwork is doing its job and standing out to new listeners:

1. Keep It Simple
The best artwork does one thing really well. That might mean a bold font, a single striking image, or a unique color palette. But once you start adding in a logo, tagline, headshot, app icons, and your podcast’s URL…you’ve lost the plot.

Aim for:

  • One strong visual concept
  • Clear, readable typography
  • Zero clutter

If you want real examples of what works (and what doesn’t), we break it down in this blog post with templates and visual references to get you started.

2. Match the Tone of Your Show
Think about how your podcast sounds. Is it funny, serious, calming, or unhinged? Make sure your cover feels like that! Listeners make assumptions based on your artwork. If it looks good and communicates tone clearly, they’ll know exactly what your show is about.

3. Choose the Right Visual Approach
There’s no single right way to design cover art, but here are three directions that usually work:

Host Photo If your face is the brand (think celebrity or influencer), a photo makes sense. If not, consider whether it’s adding anything or contributing to clutter.

Iconography A single, meaningful image can tell a story at a glance. Just avoid clichés like microphones or headphones; you wouldn’t put a DVD on a movie poster!

Typography-Led If your show name is clever or strong on its own, lean into that. Bold, clean type can stand out more than an overworked design ever will.

No matter which route you take, it needs to look good on a small scale, because that’s how people are seeing it in app menus and search results.

Real Feedback from Real People
If this is starting to feel intimidating, you don’t have to do it alone.

I love this Reddit thread where podcasters share their thoughts on what makes good podcast artwork. It’s a great way to gut-check your design or get unstuck.

And if you want to help a Buzzsprout podcaster decide, the host of People in Australia could use your help weighing in on different designs.

TL;DR:

If you're a visual learner, watch this video!

You can listen to the team break down everything about podcast cover art in this week's episode of Buzzcast

Both resources walk you through design best practices, how to think about thumbnails, and how to avoid common design pitfalls without needing to be a professional graphic designer.

If your cover art communicates tone, stands out in your category, and looks sharp at small sizes, you’re in great shape. And if you're not sure, we're here to help! Post your artwork

The Shortcut You Probably Aren't Using29 Jul 202500:01:54

Hey, Podcasters!

This week, we are switching things up! We're going to talk about a feature that doesn’t get nearly enough love: Dynamic Content. Let's get to it!

If you’ve never used it before, Dynamic Content is a tool in your Buzzsprout account that lets you easily add or remove pre-roll, mid-roll, or post-roll segments to any of your episodes.

Think of it as being able to add a quick message, announcement, or promotion, and swap it out whenever you want. But with no editing! That's right, these segments aren't added to your original audio files, so you can switch them out at any point.

It’s a flexible way to keep your episodes fresh without the hassle of re-editing your entire back catalog.

You can use Dynamic Content to...

  • Thank a sponsor
  • Announce an upcoming event
  • Send a holiday greeting
  • Respond to Fan Mail
  • Thank your supporters
  • Promote a giveaway
  • Invite listeners to interact on Social Media
  • Mention upcoming conferences you'll be attending
  • Cross-promote other podcasts

You can even get creative!
Some podcasters use Dynamic Content to rotate intro or outro music across their episodes (like this great idea on Reddit).

If you'd rather listen than read, you can learn about Dynamic Content in this episode of The Proffitt Podcast. Krystal does a great job of walking you through four ways to use Dynamic Content and why it's important for content creators to know how to utilize it.

How do you use it? Join the conversation in our Facebook group and share your best practices or ideas with other podcasters.

Dynamic Content is available for all Buzzsprout podcasters in your Buzzsprout account! You can check it out by going to the Episodes page and clicking on the Dynamic Content tab.

Alright, that's all for Dynamic Content, and all I have for this week. I'm excited to hear how you use it!

The Best Gear for Any Budget22 Jul 202500:02:41

Hey, Podcasters!

Our team is prepping for Podcast Movement next month, which has my brain in full conference mode. One of our most asked questions at conferences actually isn't about Buzzsprout, it's about podcasting equipment!

Podcasters want to know if the gear they are using is "right," and while the best equipment for one podcaster might not be the same for another, there are some common themes that can make a big difference. So today, we're going all in on one topic: podcast equipment. Let’s get to it!

The Best Gear for Any Budget

As the podcast industry continues to grow, so do the podcast equipment offerings. And while it is great to see so many companies investing in the podcasting space, it can be tough to know what products are right for you!

This week on Buzzcast, the team is sharing their favorite podcasting equipment after hitting 500k downloads. They share why they still prefer dynamic microphones, what products are luxury vs necessity, and how to get the most out of your recording space.

Ask Megan

"Hey, a lot of people talk about narrowing down your audience. How do I find my podcast niche?"

Finding your niche as a podcaster is a great way to attract your target audience! Start by thinking about what you bring to the table: your interests, expertise, and point of view. Then look for the overlap between what excites you and what people are already searching for or talking about. That sweet spot is usually your niche!

Then think about who your podcast is for. What kind of listener would get the most out of your content? And here’s the big tip: speak directly to your ideal listener in your titles, descriptions, and episode intros. The more your podcast feels like it was made for them, the more likely they are to hit subscribe and stick around!

A Smarter Way to Recommend Podcasts01 Jul 202500:02:54

Hey, Podcasters!

It's been 20 years since podcasts were added to iTunes! Can you believe it? In some ways it feels like podcasting has been around forever, and in others, it feels like they are still so new.

A Smarter Way to Recommend Podcasts

Serial was my introduction to podcasts. It was so good that I would’ve traded my iPhone 7 for one solid podcast recommendation to listen to next.

That feeling of wanting more and not knowing where to turn still exists for so many podcast listeners. And that’s exactly where Podroll steps in.

Podroll is a way for creators to recommend the podcasts they love to their audience. These recommendations are powerful because they're from a podcast creator, not an algorithm.

Ask Megan

"Hi Megan, I am working on my show cadence, and I can't quite nail down my publishing schedule. How often should I release new episodes?"

There’s no one-size-fits-all cadence; it comes down to consistency. Pick a schedule you can actually stick to!

Weekly is the most common cadence because it gives your audience a steady rhythm and makes your show part of their weekly routine. But, biweekly or even monthly can work just as well, especially if your episodes are longer or more research-heavy.

Remember, the key is consistency! Listeners like knowing when to expect new episodes, so whatever cadence you choose, try to keep it consistent so your audience can keep up.

How to Rank Higher in Apple Podcasts21 Oct 202500:02:37

Send a question for 'Ask Megan'

Hey, Podcasters!

Let’s be honest: everyone wants to know the secret to ranking higher in Apple Podcasts, but for years, no one really knew how it worked.

I’ve sat through countless conference sessions promising to “crack the code” on podcast SEO, and most turned out to be pure snake oil. But now we have credible data straight from Apple.

If you’ve ever wondered how to help your show climb the charts and get discovered by more listeners, this one’s for you.

What Podcast SEO Means

Podcast SEO can refer to two things:

  • Improving your website’s visibility on Google or
  • Optimizing your show inside directories.

We're going to focus on optimizing your show inside Apple Podcasts, which is where most listeners (about 70%!) discover new shows.

How Apple Podcasts Search Works

Apple ranks search results using three main factors:

Metadata
Apple indexes your podcast name, episode titles, author tag, and channel name for search results. So you'll want to include clear, keyword-rich titles that describe your content!

Popularity
This one isn't a huge surprise: podcasts with more followers and plays rank higher.

If you want to increase your popularity, add an Apple Smart Banner to your website so visitors can follow your show directly in Apple Podcasts. If you're using a Buzzsprout website, you already have one!

User Behavior
Apple rewards shows with active engagement, meaning the number of plays, follows, and episode completion rates.

We've also learned these can be time sensitive, so promote new episodes right after release to boost early engagement.

Top Charts
If you're looking to climb the charts, momentum matters! 100 new followers in a day impacts rankings more than the same number spread out over a month.

So you want to focus on promoting new episodes within the first 48 hoursto build traction!

Key Takeaways

  • Use specific, keyword-aligned titles for your podcast and episodes
  • Add Apple’s Smart Banner to drive followers
  • Promote new episodes immediately to increase engagement

We break down these tips and more in the full guide on Podcast SEO.

Hey, Podcasters!

How do you help listeners find their next favorite podcast without relying on an algorithm?

Pocket Casts just rolled out support for Podroll, giving podcasters a direct way to recommend shows inside the app.

Last week on Buzzcast, the team talks about how this is a powerful shift in podcast discovery and how you can add recommendations in Buzzsprout.

Listen wherever you get your podcasts, and text us what you think!

Industry Insight:

  • For when indie creators quietly start leading the way: For the first time ever, user-generated content like videos, podcasts, and social media posts from indie creators will eclipse the ad revenue of traditional media produced by TV networks, movies, and news companies. This is a huge cultural shift for the media world, and can help podcasters attract more ad opportunities!

Ask Megan:

"I'm already using Fan Mail, any tips on how to make the most of it?"

Definitely! Once you have Fan Mail turned on, the next step is making it part of your show’s rhythm.

One of the best things you can do is actively invite feedback in your episodes. A quick mention like “Tell us what you think using the Fan Mail link in the show notes” makes a big difference.

It also helps to respond to Fan Mail on your show. That kind of acknowledgment encourages more listeners to reach out!

Some podcasters even use Fan Mail as a content tool, shaping future episodes around listener questions or suggestions. If you're not using Fan Mail yet, you can turn it on by going to your Home page and clicking on the Fan Mail tab in your Buzzsprout account!

And if you haven't received any Fan Mail, reply to this email and let us know! We want to send you your first message!

Ask Megan:

"Hey, I have been podcasting for a few years now, and I'm trying to keep my show engaging. What can I do to keep my show feeling fresh over time?"

Great question! A fresh format usually comes down to structure with flexibility. That means having a consistent core, like a recognizable intro, segment flow, or recurring theme, but giving yourself room to experiment within that framework.

Try mixing things up with new segment ideas, guest types, or episode lengths. Even small changes like asking a different opening question or switching where you place a story in the episode can make things feel new without losing what listeners love about your show.

Also, pay attention to your own curiosity. If you’re feeling energized by a new topic or format twist, your audience probably will too.

We recommend using a dynamic microphone if you can, like the Samson Q2U or Shure MV7, and get nice and close to the mic.

If the final audio needs a little polishing, Magic Mastering can help smooth it out and give it that finished sound without a ton of editing.

Manage Your Podcast Anywhere14 Oct 202500:02:12

Send a question for 'Ask Megan'

Hey, Podcasters!

Coming off a long weekend can throw off your rhythm! Your schedule changes, your workflow shifts, and podcasting can feel harder to fit in.

With the holidays and more travel approaching, keeping your podcast on track can feel tough. But, staying consistent through the end of the year is easier than you think!

So, here are some of my favorite ways to stay on top of my podcast when life gets busy:

1. Keep Your Podcast With You
Buzzsprout for Mobile makes it easy to stay connected to your show, no matter where you are.

You can publish an episode while waiting to board a flight. Fix a typo in your show notes from the back of a rideshare. Or check your latest stats when a new notification pops up at dinner.

You’ll also get alerts when your episode goes live or your podcast hits a new milestone, so you never miss a moment worth celebrating!

I always make sure I have it downloaded before a trip so I can manage my show without having to lug around a computer!

Download Buzzsprout for Mobile

2. Build in Visual Reminders
When your schedule changes, it can be easy for your podcast to slip your mind. For me, a big help is visual reminders!

That’s where Buzzsprout's Home Screen Widgets come in. They give me real-time updates by just glancing at my phone. Which, to be honest, I'm already doing.

You can:

  • See today’s downloads
  • Check last week’s performance at a glance
  • Customize your screen with your podcast artwork

Those small reminders help keep my show front and center even when my days look different.

Get Home Screen Widgets

3. Keep Your Momentum
You don’t need to overhaul your process to stay consistent, but adding a few key tools can make it that much easier to stay connected to your show during a busy season.

For me, the Buzzsprout app and home screen widgets help track progress, celebrate milestones, and keep me creating through a packed calendar.

So even though your routine may change, your podcast doesn’t have to!

Podcast Myth Busters07 Oct 202500:02:46

Send a question for 'Ask Megan'

Hey, Podcasters!

Podcasting is full of well-intentioned advice. Some of it helps, but sometimesit's a myth.

In our latest Buzzcast episode, Kevin, Jordan, and Alban unpack three common myths that often slow podcasters down and explain what actually moves a show forward.

Myth 1: You must launch with three episodes

This advice has been passed around for years. The theory is that more episodes mean more downloads and a better shot at being featured by Apple Podcasts.

But here's the thing: there is no official rule.

Apple does not require three episodes to launch or be featured. If it fits your format, launch with more than one. But many shows get featured with a single episode or a trailer.

If you do want to be featured, what helps most is submitting for promotion within the first six months of launch, choosing Monday as your feature date in Apple’s form, and having strong cover art and titles.

We break down the full myth on Buzzcast

Myth 2: You need expensive equipment to sound professional

High-end microphones are appealing but not required. A $70 Samson Q2U can sound nearly identical to a $600 studio mic with the right setup.

Focus first on the basics: a quiet room, proper technique, and simple editing will take you further than new gear.

Myth 3: There are too many podcasts

Podcasting might feel crowded, but most shows stop after a few episodes.

You'd be surprised that only a fraction of podcasts release new episodes each month!

And podcast listenership keeps growing. There is still room for new, high-quality shows that serve a clear audience.

As Alban said on Buzzcast: “I always have room in my life for another podcast I love.”

You can also check out the Reddit discussion where podcasters shared this myth and others that almost stopped them from starting.

Takeaway

You do not need three episodes, a thousand-dollar mic, or perfect timing to launch. You need content that your audience values and the consistency to keep going.

A Better Way to Name Podcasts30 Sep 202500:02:09

Send a question for 'Ask Megan'

Hey Podcasters!

Have you ever had an amazing idea for a show… only to get completely stuck on the name?

You brainstorm a dozen options, check Apple Podcasts, and they’re all taken. Or worse, you find one you like, but it doesn’t really capture what your podcast is about.

Naming is one of the biggest roadblocks for new podcasters. Too clever, and no one can find it. Too generic, and it blends in. No wonder so many shows stall before they ever launch.

That’s why in this video, we’re sharing what makes a strong podcast name:

  • Clear over clever helps listeners instantly know what your show is about.
  • Keep it short so your title is easier to say, share, and search.
  • Long-term thinking can help you choose a name that grows with your show.
  • Check availability to make sure you don't fall in love with a name that's already taken.

And here’s more good news: you don’t have to figure it out alone.

We just launched a free Podcast Name Generator that makes the process easier (and faster).

Here’s how it works:

  1. Enter your show description (plus tone and format, if you want).
  2. Get a dozen tailored name ideas matched to your concept.
  3. Each suggestion is instantly checked against The Podcast Index, so you’ll know if it’s unique.

Try the Podcast Name Generator

Naming your podcast doesn’t have to stall your progress. With the Podcast Name Generator, you can find a name that fits your show and sets you up for growth.
