| Class In Session: Academic Inclusiveness (AI), with Anshul Sonak | 23 Dec 2024 | 00:24:33 | |
As AI grows, we've wrestled on this show with what it IS. Is it just one new technology- however revolutionary- like a calculator? Or is it a major human-culture-shifting phenomenon? Anshul Sonak, our newest Pencil Buster, joining us representing Intel's Digital Readiness Program, argues that AI is the "new electricity." It will revolutionize how we use tools, how we live our lives, and how we do our work. And we- meaning ALL of us- need to be able to navigate through the technology. Anshul promotes Intel's Digital Readiness Program as a path to empower all of us to become tech literate through public-private partnerships. There's a better world ahead of us, so how do we get there? How about together? BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. | Democratizing, with Brian Gonzalez | 21 Dec 2024 | 00:45:38
This Saturday, we're talking democracy. Well, we always do that. But this week we're talking with Brian Gonzalez, Executive Director of Intel's Government Partnerships and Initiatives division about how inclusive AI instruction can be a strong force for democratization. AI brings a fundamental shift to the digital divide. No longer is the primary concern access to the tools, it's about having the training to know what to do with them. Brian helps us see how AI can nurture the next great generation of creators and social builders. Intel's Digital Readiness Programs seek to close gaps by bringing experts together for better outcomes. More than that, Brian argues that it'll help us strengthen our democracies. | Reinvesting In Our Future | 18 Dec 2024 | 00:26:18
Dr. Jill Underly, Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction, and a repeat Pencil Buster, joins Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny to talk about our future. Specifically, Dr. Underly wants to talk about reinvesting in our futures. How? By restoring public school funding and choosing to invest in meeting the needs of our future educators, business leaders, doctors, civil servants, citizens. After decades of divestment from public education, Wisconsin's schools need a drastic infusion of cash to address basic needs and begin building a brighter future. Dr. Underly proposes investing over $4 BILLION in the next biennium into our schools. It's drastic, and it's absolutely needed to relieve the crushing burden of endless referenda and lost opportunities to help children. | A Moment for Thought | 16 Dec 2024 | 00:22:27
As we continue the work of naming this moment, we wonder: what would Matt Damon's mom say about all this? Thankfully, we have her number, so we asked! Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige, one of our favorite long-time Pencil Busters, returns to share her thoughts on what to do now. We live in a different moment than we've ever experienced. As we prepare for the second Trump presidency, educated educators need to focus on educating. With historic wealth inequality, an explosion of disinformation on social media, and self-declared Christian Nationalists overtaking our public education systems, we've got a lot of work ahead of us! Nancy shares how she's been leaning on the memory of her friend, Howard (Howie) Zinn; we've been doing the same! BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. | Not just an educated educator, a Super Teacher! | 14 Dec 2024 | 00:45:38
Because we simply didn't have enough Tims around here, Dr. Tim invited another one. Class, welcome our newest Pencil Buster, Tim Novikoff! Tim N taught high school before becoming an entrepreneur and selling his company to Google, developing AI at Google, and eventually leaving to be an entrepreneur once more. This time, he wanted to create a product that benefitted his own family as well as countless others. Which led him to develop Super Teacher, an interactive AI tutor for elementary learners. Super Teacher is not a replacement for a human teacher, and certainly has its limits. And it's an incredible tool to support elementary students with healthy screen time! This is one product that even has Jess thinking about hopping on the AI train! BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. | A Race Between Fear and Hope | 11 Dec 2024 | 00:23:30
As we continue to name this moment, conversing with Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, Bill Ayers, and Dr. Jonathan Gyurko, we turn to expert Pencil Buster, President of AFT, Randi Weingarten. We last spoke with Randi on July 19th of this year (episode available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts). So much has changed since then. When we last spoke, President Biden was still in the race for re-election, with increasingly grim prospects. Now, we sit in the aftermath of the dreaded result, Trump re-elected to the office of President of the United States. So what comes next? What do we do to meet the needs of all of us, not just a few of us, here and now? Randi helps us find what we need to fight for a better future- watch this lecture from Randi to further rally your spirit. BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. Welcome to another week of pencil busting, let's get started! Tim's current home state of Ohio is now the 14th state to institute a bigoted bathroom bill that prevents trans people from using the correct restroom for their identity. Nationally, the Supreme Court appears ready to uphold Tennessee's ban on gender affirming care for transgender minors. Class, these are some big pencils, we've got a lot to bust. | Dealing for Our Public Schools | 07 Dec 2024 | 00:45:36
Returning Pencil Buster and champion of the best quality public education for all ages Dr. Jonathan Gyurko joins Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny to talk about meeting the needs of the moment. We first brought Jonathan into our Pencil Busting family six months ago to talk about his book Publicization (find the June 5th episode on Spotify or Apple Podcasts). Jonathan challenges us, in Publicization and in his most recent article, to rethink how we define "public education" to move past what we call schools to what the schools do. He also challenges us to think about how we can leverage this moment- with a self-proclaimed master deal maker returning to the White House- to make deals for public education. In addition to writing and advocating for quality public education, Jonathan is the president and a co-founder of ACUE, the Association for College and University Educators. The worst kept secret of higher ed is that by and large, the instructors never learned how to teach! Jonathan and his team formed ACUE to remedy that issue. And as a Pencil Buster, you can be part of the solution! Use promo code BUSTEDPENCILS20 for 20% off their fully leaded modules and courses to help you freshen and deepen your teaching! | Naming THIS Moment: Contradiction | 04 Dec 2024 | 00:25:32
Returning Pencil Buster and longtime social justice educator-activist Bill Ayers joins Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny to continue the work of naming this strange moment. Building on our conversations with Dr. Kevin Kumashiro and with David Pepper, Bill helps us reckon with where we are. It's a moment of contradiction, as American voters chose both their public schools and Donald Trump, who vows to unmake public education as we know it. This moment is one of duality as our population becomes ever-increasingly diverse while efforts to celebrate that diversity come under attack. So where do we go from here? | Between Schooling and Educating | 30 Nov 2024 | 00:45:36
Happy belated Thanksgiving everyone! We have so much to be thankful for, and we take time to acknowledge that in this episode. We also have much to work towards, reminiscing on our interview with David Pepper. How could so many people choose both their public schools and Donald Trump, who ran on a platform of defunding public schools? Was it because too often education turns into a system of schooling that separates the "educated" from the "uneducated"? Or do we just need more than a binary system? Our educated educators kick the ideas around. BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. Subscribe to the podcast to be sure not to miss out on a single episode! | Kudos Champions! | 29 Nov 2024 | 00:20:05
We've been following Wisconsin's high school football teams, both 11-player AND 8-player, since September. Here at the end of First Downs and Friday Night Lights, we check in with a brand new Pencil Buster. Travis Wilson is the general manager of the Wisconsin Sports Network (WSN). WisSports covers all of our state's high school athletics, but Travis knows that ALL of the essential curricular activities contribute to a full high school experience. He joins us to recap the end of the football season and share kudos with the state champions. We now look ahead to the start of basketball and hockey. | Let Teacher Lead the Charge! | 27 Nov 2024 | 00:23:20
Class, welcome our newest Pencil Buster, David Pepper! In addition to being a lawyer, a political fiction author, and former Chair of the Ohio Democratic Party, David is an educated educator, teaching election and voting rights law at the University of Cincinnati College of Law. David joins Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny to talk about a strange phenomenon he observed in the 2024 general election. Across the country, voters cast simultaneous levers for Donald Trump and against vouchers. This pairing surprises us, because Trump campaigned hard on a platform with a central pillar of "school choice"- vouchers. So what happened? David Pepper went to a district where voters rejected vouchers 74-26 while choosing Trump 80-20. Grab your pencils, class is in session. | What’s the problem here? | 25 Nov 2024 | 00:24:53
Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush argues that in this past election, voters voiced their favor for “school choice,” which any Pencil Buster knows is just code for vouchers. Bush may be conflating the votes people made at the top of the ticket for Trump with a vote for vouchers. Because across the country, where vouchers appeared on ballots, voters roundly gave a huge thumbs down. Then, the University of Oklahoma faces the ire of their current governor for a class that may fall under their DEI ban. The weird thing though… well Johnny’s taught this class for 18 years. And every accredited teaching program in the country has a version of this same class. So what exactly is Governor Stitt’s problem here??? | Naming the Moment | 23 Nov 2024 | 00:45:32
Many of us are experiencing despair following the 2024 general election. For the fate of our country, for bigotries laid bare, and for a deep grief over who we thought we could be. How should we name this moment, and how can we talk to our loved ones about what we're experiencing? Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, a most qualified returning Pencil Buster and all around excellent human, joins Tim and Johnny to check in on all this and more. If, like Producer Jess, this is your first time meeting Kevin K, know that you will leave this hour more at peace and in better spirits than you arrived! | Cabinetry 101 | 20 Nov 2024 | 00:32:41
Welcome to Class, Pencil Busters! All over the news, President-Elect Trump is "tapping" people to fill his cabinet. Why do presidents have cabinets stuffed full of people? Well, they shouldn't. So what is a Presidential Cabinet if not a piece of furniture? Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny lead a lesson on the Executive Branch of the United States government. And then, we take a look at a man who has been auditioning to be Trump's nomination for Secretary of Education for the past year. Ryan Walters, Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction, mandated in June that each public school in Oklahoma needed a Bible. This week, he mandated that each PUBLIC school in the state needed to play a video announcing the establishment of a new state department to promote school prayer. Well, get those pencils ready, we've got busting to do! As a note, between recording this episode and its release, Trump tapped WWE executive Linda McMahon for Secretary of Education. | Accreditation Alarm: guard our democracy | 18 Nov 2024 | 00:19:02
Welcome to another week of Pencil Busting, class! This week, we're starting off by reminding ourselves and you of something very important. Education, ESPECIALLY public education, teaches us so much more than how to count, read, and write. It's where we learn how to be citizens in a democracy. Our institutions of higher education are especially potent place of civic learning and engagement. A white paper published last week by Complete College America demonstrates the unimpeachable power of higher ed to grow and strengthen democracy. However, one multi-impeached man who will return to the White House in January has threatened to use college accreditation as a "secret weapon". Tim and Jess discuss what this might mean. Class, give a big BustED Pencils welcome to our newest Pencil Buster, Jason Feig! Jason is part of the Khan Academy team, which works to bring the highest quality education to as many people as possible. He also works closely with schools looking to broaden their curricula to include AI materials and resources. Khan Academy's newest learning mode, Khanmigo, is an incredible set of tools. Hell, it's so cool, it got Dr. JOHNNY fully amped, and he's usually our AI skeptic! Jason highlights that the AI is a tool to help teachers work on the most important parts of teaching: forming strong human connection and inspiring engaged learning. | Referenda Review: the lights are STAYING ON! | 15 Nov 2024 | 00:19:27
Coach K, Civic Media's own Jimmie Kaska, joins Dr. Tim to review how Wisconsin schools fared in the election. While we bemoan our loses at the national level and what that may mean for education, we celebrate Wisconsin's overwhelming support for our public schools. As Jimmie writes, Wisconsin school districts overwhelmingly passed both operational and facilities requests. This is huge! Wisconsinites across the state showed up and said "we care about public schools and we'll pay more for them!" And in the midst of processing a huge national loss, these bright spots matter. | Welcome to the Democracy Indoctrination Station | 13 Nov 2024 | 00:32:19
Class is in session, Pencil Busters. Just a week after Trump won re-election, we brace ourselves for the onslaught of attacks on public education. Trump has a video laying out his 10-point plan to reform this country's education. Among the points: return school prayer, make hiring and firing decisions based on political loyalty, and funnel public school money to private schools through vouchers. Oh, and eliminate the Federal Department of Education. What will that mean, and how can we be prepared? Tim and Producer Jess break it down. | For Our Democracy | 11 Nov 2024 | 00:21:18
Once more, Donald Trump is President-elect of the United States. On the campaign trail, he made broad promises to dismantle the federal Department of Education. He threatened to weaponize accreditation programs and to withhold federal funds for schools that teach “woke” ideologies. So what may be the consequences on k-12 and higher education in the United States for the next four years? We can’t be sure. Of one thing we are absolutely certain: we will be here, busting pencils, at every turn. We will continue to advocate for public education. After all, this is where so many of us first engage in democracy. We refuse to crumble in the face of these political defeats. The next four years may get dark. And we’ll be here to kindle light. | Something Greater than Oneself | 08 Nov 2024 | 00:20:57
Here at BustED Pencils, we know that the so-called "extra"-curriculars are ESSENTIAL curricula. And our guest today, newly initiated Pencil Buster Brent Wilkinson knows it too! Brent earned his undergrad degree from Harvard College and his MBA from Harvard Business. While in undergrad, he played for Harvard's football team. He's here today to bust some myths in addition to pencils, starting with the notion that a student athlete "takes a spot" from a more qualified student at an elite university. It's just not true! As Dr. Johnny explains from his own experience as a university coach, a student athlete is first and foremost a STUDENT. With that settled, let's dig into why these activities deserve recognition as ESSENTIAL rather than EXTRA curricular. Well, Brent puts it simply. Engagement in these activities teaches young people how to be part of something bigger and greater than themselves. And that's darn important. Here in beautifully purple, swing-state Wisconsin, tensions run high. Teacher Hallie and Teacher Joanna of Educators Amplified urge us to take care in these moments. As much stress as we feel, we know tools to regulate ourselves and help calm our loved ones. And remember folks- sometimes the best answer to that tension is to- as Michelle Obama instructs- DO SOMETHING! For a one-stop shop to check your voter registration, find your polling location, and practice voting with a sample ballot, go to myvote.wi.gov. Make a plan to vote and fulfill your CIVIC duty! | Refs on Referenda | 01 Nov 2024 | 00:21:51
Coach K, Civic Media's own Jimmie Kaska, joins Dr. Johnny to chop up school referenda. By November 5th's election, nearly half of Wisconsin's school districts will have gone to referendum to secure funding. We've talked plenty on BustED Pencils about school referenda and the struggles for schools to secure enough funding to keep the lights on. And as we'll keep saying, it is equally vital to maintain funding for the "extra"curricular school offerings. Coach K puts it very simply: funding on a referenda that goes to athletics yields community good. BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. | Emotion Literacy- it’s about empowerment not management | 30 Oct 2024 | 00:26:26
Pamela Sackett, founder of Emotion Literacy Advocates, earns her Pencil Busting credentials! She comes to us as a fully leaded educator focused on helping young people develop emotion literacy. Pamela sees too much focus in traditional Social Emotional Learning methods on behavior management- not on true regulation, which comes from knowing our emotions. Instead, Pamela advocates for emotion literacy- a deep understanding of our emotions and how they affect usl. Over her career, Pamela has developed resources to help young people develop their emotion literacy including one handy book- I Can: Twelve Ways to Witness the Heart. | We need Genuine Guidelines for Artificial Intelligence | 28 Oct 2024 | 00:22:23
Welcome to another week of BustED Pencils! In this homeroom, artificial intelligence is back in the news. As AI advances at a mind-boggling rate, many teachers lag behind their students in mastery of the tools. Recall from our episode with Marc Watkins how AI's rapid development presents a unique change in how we interact with information. Well, then we need to alter how we train teachers to include AI. Because right now, teachers aren't receiving the AI training they need. And schools lack policies to address AI in classrooms, leading to tricky lawsuits. | Great College Teaching: it’s worth it! | 26 Oct 2024 | 00:30:31
Wouldn't it be neat to be able to choose your college based on the quality of the institution's teaching? Wait- isn't that what we do? As it turns out, no. Because we don't measure that. Jonathan Zimmerman, author of The Amateur Hour and Professor of Research of History at Penn University , is now a qualified Pencil Buster! Jon wrote in August's edition of the Washington Monthly on Why Professors Can't Teach. And why can't they? Well, because no one every taught them how! So, what's the answer? How do we teach professors how to teach? Let's start with ACUE. Busted Pencils proudly announces a partnership with ACUE, the Association for College and University Educators. We invite you all to join in this partnership! Use code BUSTEDPENCILS20 for 20% off any and all of ACUE's fully leaded learning opportunities! | Healthy Changes, Real Football | 25 Oct 2024 | 00:22:25
Thank goodness, it's Busted Pencils First Downs and Friday Night Lights! Civic Media WXCO Operations Manager and host Chad Holmes joins Tim and Johnny to talk about some changes in high school football. Many schools in Wisconsin are moving to an 8-player game from the traditional 11-player model. The move brings real promise in terms of making the game accessible to schools that can't fill a roster for 11-player. Plus, it may just be a safer version of the game. But that doesn't mean everyone is convinced yet. Hear what our educated educators think of the matter! BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. | All In This Together | 23 Oct 2024 | 00:21:29
Allen Levie knows what it means to Thrive in a Public School- he literally wrote the book on it. And now he also knows how to bust pencils! Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny talk with Allen about how our public schools teach so much more than dates and numbers. Our public schools teach us how to engage in democracy. And our public schools teach us that in this life, we are truly, all in this together. BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. | Public funds come with strings. Accept them or remain private. | 21 Oct 2024 | 00:18:53
Welcome to Homeroom, Class! Let's get this week started with some trending news. First up: a private Catholic school seeks public funds. Then, a few takeaways from the growing push for "school choice"- otherwise known as public school funds theft. Tim and Producer Jess share their strong responses to these stories. We can't help wondering what ramifications may unfold from a clearly exclusionary school seeking public funds. BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. Marc Watkins, first time Pencil Buster and longtime education advocate, joins the show. Marc is the Assistant Director of Academic Innovation at the University of Mississippi, where he also directs the AI Institute for Teachers. AI is advancing at a mind-boggling, human society-altering pace. Many of us, our esteemed hosts included, feel like we're barely keeping up with the constant innovation and advancement of AI technology. Marc assures us that's a normal feeling. So what IS happening with AI development? How might AI technology reshape how we perceive and consider reality, knowledge, and even life? Find out! | Measuring What Matters | 14 Oct 2024 | 00:23:09
Welcome to another week of Pencil Busting! Let's get started with some trending news. First, it turns out DEI initiatives bring great value to educational institutions even beyond increasing their diversity and equity. Well, duh. We all do better when we all do better. Still, always nice to get some recognition and reinforcement of this! Then, the way we rank schools leaves out the most important factor! Previewing our upcoming interview with the author of this piece, Jonathan Zimmerman, we dig into what really matters for education. BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. | It’s Official: we love our officials! | 11 Oct 2024 | 00:17:13
Chad Schultz, Assistant Director at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletics Association (WIAA), joins Dr. Johnny for this week's First Downs and Friday Night Lights. Refs take a lot of flak. And they are simply indispensable to a well-run athletic event. It's not easy to be an athletic judge- as Johnny can well attest. And there's a critical shortage of refs now. So how do these officials learn to, well, be official? And what is the WIAA doing to address the shortage? Find out! BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. | Honesty- it just makes good sense | 09 Oct 2024 | 00:22:21
So many of us value truth and honesty. Yet we struggle to identity consistently what that truth is and how to live by it. Returning Pencil Buster Dr. Sarah Stitzlein joins Dr. Tim to guide us through it. Sarah is a world-class scholar with a focus on teaching honesty- she quite literally wrote the book on it. As Sarah explores in her book, Teaching Honesty in a Populist Era: Emphasizing Truth in the Education of Citizens, truth isn't always simple. It's not always easy or straightforward. Frequently, truth is messy and complicated. Rather than shirk from that complexity, let's find ways to embrace it and teach the benefits of honest living. | To drill or not to drill… | 07 Oct 2024 | 00:19:12
In schools we know to expect drills. We drill students and faculty on how to respond to threats of natural disaster and fire. We also drill our school citizenry on how to respond to active shooters. But should we? Even as President Biden issues executive orders to improve responses to active shooters- including by going through training and drills, not all teachers believe the drills help. Let's compare the potential benefits and risks of these drills, eh? BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. | Biologic Diversity- it makes life interesting! | 02 Oct 2024 | 00:24:48
Welcome to class! This week's featured Educated Educator is Sam Long. Sam is a high school biology teacher, a writer for Rethinking Schools, and a proud trans-man. As a biology teacher, he knows the arguments often phrased about "basic biology" dictating that there are two and only two sexes in the human species. And he knows those arguments simply do not find support in evidence. Biology is so much more diverse and so much more interesting than a simple binary. | Howard Zinn and the case for Rethinking History | 30 Sep 2024 | 00:15:18
Welcome to Homeroom, class! Once upon a not so distant time ago, we celebrated "Columbus Day" on the second Monday of each October. Today, many Americans commemorate that day as Indigenous Peoples' Day. Why the change? Well, we started rethinking what we thought we knew and what we wanted to celebrate about our country's history. Howard Zinn was a major force propelling us to do so with his 1980 book, A People’s History of the United States: 1492 – Present. And Howard Zinn changed much more than that for all of us who study history in this country. Today, Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny share how Howard Zinn's philosophy guides them. TGIBPF- Thank goodness it is once more BustED Pencils Friday! That means it's time for First Downs and Friday Night Lights (or Busting Balls as Tim prefers...). Join us this week for a conversation with Mel Dow, Associate Director of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, WIAA. Like our pal Coach Kaska, Mel lives and breathes high school athletics. He knows how much these "extra"-curricular activities enrich the school experience for the students who participate and the entire community who benefit from the events. But what about when students seek or are solicited for a little extra enrichment in the form of advertisement with their name, image, or likeness? Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige is one hell of an educated educator, and we just never have enough time with her. This week, we take a few extra minutes to talk with Nancy about one of our favorite topics: vouchers. What are they? What intentions led to their institution and promotion?
