The BTA Pulse | NATS Failures, Heathrow Charges and Hotel Levy Dominate Conversations11 Sep 202600:21:14

Send us Fan Mail

Welcome to The BTA Podcast.  In these podcasts we will endeavour to share our thoughts, concerns, optimism and build those all-important human connections with our Partners, Members and Guests.

Episode Overview:

Clive Wratten and Andrew Clarke covered a busy period for business travel.

Air traffic control: Andrew's own trip was hit by Gulf airspace and volcanic disruption, but the main focus was NATS' latest UK failure — the third in three years. Both criticised NATS' muted response and the government's "inquiry, lessons learned" approach, noting airlines bear the cost while NATS faces none.

Heathrow charges: BTA continues backing "Heathrow Reimagined," having written to the CAA and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander over cost mechanisms that could pass development costs to travellers.

Hotel levy: Clive discussed it live on Radio 5 — reports suggest no cap on rates and a percentage rather than flat fee. Hosts rejected the "tourist tax" framing, calling it a tax on business and growth, warning it risks pricing UK cities out of major events.

Budget submission: Ahead of the October budget, BTA's asks include no further APD rises, regrading premium economy tax, and firm rail investment (HS2/Euston), coordinated with GBTA.

Upcoming events: BTA Autumn Conference in Alicante (~2 weeks, ~190 attendees, Andrew moderating) and the London Mobility Conference (next Tuesday, alongside the People Awards).

Episode Overview:

In this episode of The BTA Pulse, hosts Clive Wrattan and Andrew Clarke record together in person for a change — fresh from a full day planning next month's Autumn Conference in Benidorm.

Elsewhere, the pair reflect on a busy podcast run — including upcoming episodes with Cvent on AI in events and Fly Victor on private jets — before turning to the Commonwealth Games' first-ever combined Para and able-bodied format, and what its accommodation and logistics challenges mean ahead of the BTA's Mobility Conference on 15 September in London.

They close by looking to a busy September, with government back from recess and the industry gearing up post-summer.

The BTA Pulse | Border Chaos, Major Conference News and Big Changes in Business Travel14 Jul 202600:18:06

Send us Fan Mail

Welcome to The BTA Podcast.  In these podcasts we will endeavour to share our thoughts, concerns, optimism and build those all-important human connections with our Partners, Members and Guests.

Episode Overview:

In this episode of The BTA Pulse, hosts Clive Wratten and Andrew Clarke bring you the latest from the Business Travel Association — because summer or not, business travel cracks on.

Top of the agenda is the continued frustration around EES at European borders, along with the news that ETIAS — the €20 pre-travel authorisation — has been delayed into Q1 next year. With leisure travellers about to swell the summer queues, Clive and Andrew explain why the BTA is keeping business travellers' voices front and centre, from media interviews to ongoing calls with the DfT.

Attention then turns to the 2026 Conference in Alicante, with headline speakers now confirmed: political journalist Steve Richards returns with his unique take on British politics, adventurer Bonita Norris shares her remarkable story of resilience, and Lloyd Figgins delivers an update on the increasingly complex world of travel risk.

Elsewhere, the pair discuss our Sustainability Conference, a refreshed approach to the BTA's social channels, accreditation momentum with 10 members now on board, a brand-new partner board about to be unveiled, and the accessibility group's second members-only paper.

And with England facing Argentina in the World Cup semi-final, there's cautious optimism in the air. Fifty-fifty, apparently.

Send us Fan Mail

Welcome to The BTA Podcast.  In these podcasts we will endeavour to share our thoughts, concerns, optimism and build those all-important human connections with our Partners, Members and Guests.

The latest BTA Pulse highlights key pressures in business travel and ongoing lobbying efforts. A central focus was the proposed overnight visitor levy, with the BTA and industry partners pushing for business travel exemption or a flat nightly charge instead of a percentage.

The upcoming Air Passenger Duty increase from 1 April was also raised, with continued campaigning against rising costs, particularly premium economy pricing.

Changes to national rail refund rules were flagged as a major concern, though a short extension has been secured. The episode also promoted the April conference, welcomed new partners, and encouraged members to stay engaged and involved.
