#331 - Perception Versus Perspective27 Aug 202401:04:01

Back in the 1940's, 50', and into the 1960's, the recording studio was rather a simple affair. Typically one or a few mics would be used to record an artist or a band, with all of the members in the studio at the same time. Then in the 1970's, the recording studio changed, and became a structured environment, where each member could be isolated, with a selection of microphones recorded onto multiple tracks.

Things have changed since then, and the viability of the recording studio, and its status has changed dramatically. On the show today is Steve Creech, who is an industry recognized mastering engineer and record producer. He shares his insight with records to the future of the studio, and the up and coming engineer. He shares with us his experience with the difference of perception versus perspective when it comes to the recording studio and its environment.

#322 - The Efficient Hustle25 Jun 202400:51:56

The audience is in their seats. The lights dim, and the artist takes the stage. For the next 90 minutes or more, the show goes on without a hitch. But in order to get there, production for the show began to take shape, weeks, if not months earlier. But how does this happen, and who's in charge? Enter the Production Manager. This individual is in charge of everything from ensuring that the stage, sound, and lights are set up properly for the concert, to the numerous emails and phone calls to guarantee that there are no problems (or mistakes). In many ways, managing a tour is similar to running a business. There are employees and budgets to look after. The  workload and responsibilities are extraordinary. And the demands can be overwhelming. Without efficient work practices in place, the stress and lack of sleep make it impossible to thrive in the world of tour and production management.

Production Manager and author of the book "The Efficient Hustle", Lucas Meek shares stories from the road, explaining the inner workings of the touring business, what it takes to be a successful Production or Tour Manager, and everything needed to ensure that the show goes on without a hitch.

#321 - Is Your Music Resonating18 Jun 202400:36:51

Upwards of 200,000 songs or more are uploaded daily to many digital providing streaming services. It becomes a crowded field rather quickly, and in many instances, your music can get lost in all of what is often called "white noise". As streaming catalogs continue to grow in size and depth of music, DSP's (digital service providers) are beginning to remove music that has had zero impact on listeners. In another words, they want music that will resonate with their audience.

As we continue our annual "Music Biz 2024" Conference Series, in the studio with us today is Gitte Bendzulla, who is the C.O.O. of the music platform, Deezer. Deezer is a French founded, French headquartered digital streaming service providing music for the European, African, and South American markets. France (especially Paris) is considered the entrance to the European music market, and Deezer is at the head of the streaming services providing an opening for new music for the rest of Europe, and beyond.

#320 - To Sell or Not To Sell Your Catalog11 Jun 202400:38:01

With so many artists selling off their catalogs these days, is there even room for the independent artist that may have a substantial collection of songs to be a part of this new trend? Is that catalog worth money? How does one go about finding out what its "retail" value might be? Lior Tibon, who is the co-founder and CEO of Duetti, dropped into the studio during the MusicBiz 2024 Conference to share what its all about, how it can make sense for the "Indie" artist, and what the potential outcome might be.

#319 - The Songwriters Guide Book04 Jun 202400:42:09

As a songwriter, it's never been more important to track your songs, and receive payment for your efforts, as it is now. But where do you start, and where do you go to find where the royalty payments may be waiting for you? It's not always up to the PRO's (Performing Rights Organizations) to find your money and hand it out to you. In simple terms, you need to be paid for what you create. It can be challenging, and require some hard work, but it is worth it if you know how to navigate the various outlets that are available.

There are at least 13 royalty payment portals that many songwriters don't know about. Such entities as "The Music License Collective" are out there, but if you as the creator of the song don't know about them, and have the ability to access them, you're missing out on collecting your money. Nancy Deckant, who is the founder and CEO of Discover Sooner, along with being the co-author of the book "The Songwriters Guide" shares some insight and direction on where you can go to ensure you're getting all the money you earned… and deserve.

#317 - The Demise of the Music Store22 May 202400:49:59

The Music Store. Also known as the social gathering place for musicians to gather at, check out the latest musical gear, purchase their goods such as guitars, drums, strings, and sticks. But the traditional music store is much more than that. Its a locale where musicians both new and seasoned can get together and share their chops, collect new ideas, and exchange phone numbers and email addresses. It's where bands are created. But with the recent announcement of the closing of one of the largest music store chains in the Country, the selection of choices has diminished somewhat. But has it? We still have across the nation and the world, the traditional mom and pop music stores, still opening their doors every day, competing against the online internet based music retailers.

Jack Sharkey and Bob Bender bring another special edition of the "Between The Notes" series here on The Business Side of Music, discussing the demise of the traditional big box music stores, and how its now more important than ever for today's musician to seek out and put their hard earned cash into the local music retail establishments when purchasing new music gear.

#315 - Songs From A Camper Van07 May 202400:45:33

Celebrating his 30th anniversary in the music industry with his band "The Nadas", singer/songwriter, and founding member Jason Walsmith joins us in the studio to talk about his career. Jason has spent his adult life as a career musician, storyteller, photographer, traveler, and adventurer.

The celebrated folk-Americana act The Nadas have amassed a loyal and dedicated following over the past three decades for their engaging live shows and distinctive 70s-meets-90s sound. Blending twangy, Stones-era "country honk" with raw, alt-rock energy and wistful, folk-leaning melodies, their music is as alive as it is authentic. Over 30 years of making music together, The Nadas have shared the stage with The Beach Boys, Bon Jovi, Big Head Todd and Barenaked Ladies, been inducted into the Iowa Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, sold over 300,000 albums (even in a time when you can't buy a CD player), earned praise from a wide range of major publications, and written the theme song for their hometown—twice.

During his musical journey, inspired by the case of an old family heirloom that has stood the test of time, Jason has taken the elements of the design to create the heritage designed, soft-sided guitar case created to protect your favorite guitars through all of life's adventures: heavy dry waxed cotton duck material that is naturally water repellent and durable, a quilted cotton felt interior and features high quality leather and brass zippers.

Interesting tidbit of information here… Jason's band "The Nadas" was named "The Best College Band You've Never Heard Of" by Playboy Magazine in 2001.

#314 - You've Got To Swim Out To Meet Your Ship29 Apr 202400:50:22

As one of 39 kids of the world famous Osmond family (who sold over 100 million records), our guest Nathan Osmond grew up on the set of his uncles TV Show during their heyday. He himself went on to form another generation of Osmond singers, who toured with such 90's acts as New Kids On The Block, Naughty By Nature, and Colour Me Badd. The son of Alan Osmond, he and his brothers moved to Branson Missouri, where they performed at the Osmond Family Theater. While there, Nathan became influenced by Country Music.

Nathan shares his life story, the ups and downs, his performance in the Tim Rice and music Andrew Lloyd Webber's production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", and wound up in Nashville writing with the likes of Dean Sams ("Lonestar") Steve Dorf, and Tony Asher. He shares what it took for him to be successful in the music business without relying on the good name of his family but at the same time seeking advice from his uncle and aunt, Donny and Marie Osmond to learn more aspects of the business end of the music industry.

#313 - The Anatomy of The Song23 Apr 202401:04:18

Meet Dave Lenahan. He started out in the music business by being a DJ at WKSU radio on the campus of Kent State University, doing afternoon drive time jazz. He went on to work at Country Station WUBE in Cincinnati OH, but in short order he determined that he was destined to become a hit songwriter. We discuss the anatomy of the song, how to put one together, and what separates a tune from a hit.

Dave currently resides in Nashville TN, writes songs for a living, and hosts the podcast "Songwriter Connection" which has released more than 150 episodes on the exploration of songwriting.

Also joining us in the studio is award winning record producer Steve Creech as our special guest co-host.

#330 - It's Still The Wild, Wild West22 Aug 202400:46:24

The music business is probably more so like the Wild, Wild West these days, than it ever has been, even going back to the 1960's. Joining us on the show today is the legendary music industry veteran Charlie Peacock, who is a multi Grammy winner,  along with being a multiple genre Billboard chart topping music producer, composer, and recording artist. He has been named by Billboard's encyclopedia of record producers, as one of the 500 most important music producers in popular music history. He has produced music for film, television, including "A Walk To Remember", music for "12 Years A Slave", along with music for the AMC drama Series "Turn - Washington Spies". He has released more than 27 albums going back to 1982, and is releasing his new album "Every Kind of Uh Oh". He also has a memoir coming out in 2025 titled "Roots & Rhythm - A Life In Music".

Also joining Charlie in the studio is his son Sam Ashworth, who in his own right is a notable producer, singer, songwriter, and composer.

If anyone understands the wild, wild west in the music business, it's definitely Charlie and Sam.

#312 - Touring Career Workshop16 Apr 202400:39:12

Unless you work for a major corporation within the music industry, and are blessed to have a great benefits package, you must fend for yourself in order to provide the tools needed to get by in life: health insurance, retirement plans, and the general skills to run your own business. Make no mistake about it, if you are a freelance technician in the touring business – you ARE your own business. This is where the vision of the Touring Career Workshop comes to life: a simple workshop where a lot of the success tools needed are presented by experts in each of their respective fields.

One of the resources that Touring Career Workshop provides is dealing with mental health. Their "All Access Online" program provides mental health counseling with a designated counselor either online, or out on the road depending on the conditions, giving a chance for touring professionals to discuss their difficult moments and work through those challenges that arise, whether it be time away from home on the road, or those day to day life situations that sometimes pop up. Executive Director Chris Lisle, along with special guest co-host Sharon Lee who is the CEO of High Road Trucking, join us in the studio to explain how these, and other services and opportunities are available to those who work in the music touring industry.

The Touring Career Workshop is a free annual event created by industry veterans Chris Lisle and Erik Parker, designed to serve and educate their colleagues in the touring music industry. The inaugural TCW was held in November 2011 at Belmont University, and was attended by over fifty industry professionals. In the past several years well hundreds of touring industry people have attended their events. TCW is an official IRS 501c3 non profit.

#310 - Making It Big One Gig At A Time04 Apr 202400:34:32

Stone Senate has been called "a heavier version of Lynyrd Skynyrd, crossed with The Allman Brothers Band". While being mentioned in such heady company is flattering, it is important to note Stone Senate is most definitely not a retro act. They are taking what came naturally from their collective influences a step further and making a name for themselves in the world of modern country rock.

The band is fronted by vocalist/ guitarist Clint Woolsey's smoldering, soulful vocals and unmistakable stage presence. Meanwhile stage left and stage right are burning down with dual lead guitars/vocals of James Beau Edwards and Brother Ted Hennington. Add to that the bonded rhythm section of Kieran Cronley on bass and David "DZ" Zettler on drums/ vocals, and you have caught lightning in a bottle.

Stone Senate has toured with Bulletboys, Uli Jon Roth, Davisson Brothers Band, and Tantric, and direct support for bands such as Styx, Collective Soul, Jackyl, Cowboy Mouth, Saliva, Little Texas, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Quiet Riot, Asleep at the Wheel, Lit, Alien Ant Farm, Tom Kiefer Band, Billy Gibbons and the BFG's, Tim Montana, Uncle Kracker, Rehab, David Alan Coe, Whitford – St Holmes, David Lee Murphy, Andy Ross, Mike Zito, John Micheal Montgomery, Eddie Montgomery, and Confederate Railroad to name a few.

#309 - The Roadie Cartel26 Mar 202400:39:29

'Watching Guns N' Roses from the side of the stage in London, standing on the set of Saturday Night Live with Paul Simon, receiving a signed skateboard from Carrie Underwood, and mixing front-of-house sound for Kiss…'

These are just a handful of experiences in the rearview mirror of Phillip Kriz's extraordinary journey in the music industry as a sought-after "roadie" tech, band assistant, and trusted tour confidant. Following nearly 15 years as a dependable road dog, he embarks on what might be his wildest trip yet, making his literary debut with the fictional novel, The Roadie Cartel, in 2023.

This action-packed thriller follows a family immersed in drug trafficking under the cover of the music business. It's about what could go on behind backstage...

"It's the struggle between good and evil set in a world I know very well," he says. "It follows a character who believed one path was her destiny, only to find out where she was really meant to be all along."

Born and raised in El Paso, TX, Phillip discovered music through his parents. Beyond spinning classics by Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan, mom even played Howard Stern on their drive to school. Predestining a future in the business, she also brought Phillip to his first concert — U2 and Public Enemy at the Sun Bowl. Not to mention, he caught Robert Plant & Jimmy Page and Alan Jackson when they rolled through town. However, a Pink Floyd gig would be the point of no return for him. After a stint working in the food service industry in San Antonio, he attended and graduated from Full Sail University in Orlando FL where he also worked his first production gigs. Eventually, he landed his "dream job" at production powerhouse Clair Global. Coming full circle, his first assignment placed him on a jaunt with Guns N' Roses in 2010. He hit the road for the better part of the next decade. Clients included Alicia Keys, The Scorpions, Justin Bieber, Florida Georgia Line, Paul Simon, Carrie Underwood, and Queen & Adam Lambert, to name a few. At the onset of the Global Pandemic, the business shutdown, and Phillip found himself at home in Nashville, where he found himself beginning the journey as an author.

#308 - Where in The Song is The Moment?12 Mar 202400:44:37

You crafted your songs. You've put your heart and soul into them, but when you're on stage, the response from the audience is lackluster at best. Is it the material you're performing. In many cases, while the songs are excellent, the presentation is not. Where in the song is the moment on stage that defines who you are? This is where Tom Jackson Productions steps in.

As a trained Live Music Producer for Tom Jackson Productions, Amy Wolter offers her
years of personal experience onstage, along with a multi-layered musical background, to
help artists engage their audiences by creating compelling, memorable live shows.

Amy has helped hundreds of artists of all genres, prep for major headline and opening act
tour slots, and showcases for labels, and spoken at Artist Workshops around the country.
A few of her clients include Grammy award winners The Band Perry & Lacrae, CMA and
ACM –winning country acts Gloriana and Thompson Square, Riser House country artist
Dillon Carmichael, Capitol Christian's breakout artist Anne Wilson, contestants for The
Voice & American Idol, Dove award winners Francesca Battistelli & Sidewalk Prophets, as
well as top Canadian artists & Canadian Country Music Association winners High Valley,
Jess Moskaluke & Chad Brownlee.

Amy works with artists at all levels, empowering them to have confidence and authority
onstage. "I've learned by a lot from being onstage myself, and know the importance of
connecting with an audience. If a crowd doesn't enjoy watching you, or have an
'experience' at your show, then what's the point of them seeing you live?" says Amy. "The
ideas and tools in Tom Jackson's Live Music Method are absolutely career-changing when
an artist understands the power of a great live performance!"

#307 - An Alligator Walking Thru The Everglades05 Mar 202400:54:29

Continuing our ongoing series of "Between The Notes" episodes with music industry veteran Jack Sharkey, We have a discussion that is often overlooked, or at the very least ignored... The loss of hearing due to years of performing live music. Jack, who himself suffers from hearing loss because of loud volumes on stage (along with a inexperienced sound engineer on occasion), had permanent damage done to his ears after decades performing live. Ironically, Sharkey also works in the audiophile business for a speaker company, and explains how hearing damage can affect your day to day living, whether its with family, or in the workplace. This outcome comes down to causing injury that can be permanent if not addressed. Jack shares thoughts on how to prevent hearing loss, and what it takes to get some of those frequencies back if the damage is done.

As for the episode title, you'll just have to tune in and listen (it comes from the usual antics Jack and Bob do while in the studio!).

#305 - Night Train To Nashville20 Feb 202400:51:07

What started out as a project in a screenwriting class in a writers boot camp, has turned into a novel describing how Nashville, also known as "Music City" evolved into what it is today… or not. Nashville Tennessee is well known for its Country music, but did you know that the birthplace of Rhythm and Blues, or what we these days call "R&B" actually was born in this Middle Tennessee City we call Nashville.

The moniker "Music City" was actually derived from the1860's after the Civil War, when the Jubilee Singers from Nashville's Fisk University performed in front of England's Queen Victoria, preceding Country music by approximately 80 years or so.

In the studio today, we chat with author Paula Blackman about the "night music" that took place in Nashville in the midst of segregation in the 40's, 50's and early 60's, how the legendary Nashville TN based WLAC Radio had the ability to broadcast across the Eastern United States, and how this worked out in the favor of introducing R&B Music to the World.

A retired gemologist, Paula Hope Blackman turned her lifelong storytelling hobby into a second career, becoming an author, screenwriter and playwright. She is a sixth generation native of Tennessee, who divides her time between Nashville and Southwest Florida, where she lives with her husband, Michael Iacampo.

#304 - The Disruptors13 Feb 202400:49:22

dis·rup·tion (noun)

Definition: "A radical change to an existing industry or market due to technological innovation."

According to our guest Jack Sharkey, who is with KEF Audio, music and the culture at large needs disruption to keep it fresh and engaging. The digital revolution and the chokehold the "industry" has on art has made it nearly impossible for the next generation of disruptors to be heard.

There is plenty of good music being made today and we shouldn't always subscribe to the philosophy that music was better back in the day so to speak. Music is music, and it will always touch those who wish to be touched by it. The difference today is the folks who control the money aren't willing to upset the apple cart by taking a chance on something that hasn't been tried before.

Who are the disruptors of music today? When can we anticipate the next Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, or The Beatles, all who turned the music and cultural scene upside down?

On this very special edition of The Business Side of Music, we share the microphone with Jack Sharkey, who in addition to being a technical advisor for KEF, is also a Blog writer, and the host of the "Between The Notes" podcast show.

#303 - You Have One Chance To Make a Bad First Impression06 Feb 202400:49:58

What makes a successful singer or songwriter? Is it perseverance? Is it working with seasoned co-songwriters or industry veterans? Could your stumbling block be the lack of networking or that first impression? There are often more questions than answers. Enter Marc-Alan Barnette to help us navigate those swampy waters.

Marc-Alan Barnette, aka "THUNDER THROAT", has always been a "square peg in an octagonal hole". His blue eyed soul voice, has drawn comparisons to Ray Charles and Delbert McClinton, and his seemingly endless collections of songs pretty much summon up everything, covering country, blues, rock, bluegrass, soul, and every comedy. The man has a lot of sides.

His over 40 year career in music has spanned the rock era of the70's and 80's, moving to country in the late 80's, scoring songs recorded by "GRAMMY WINNER SHELBY LYNNE" (THAT'S WHERE IT HURTS), country superstars, DAVID BALL (TOO MUCH BLOOD IN MY ALCOHOL LEVEL) JOHN BERRY (RESCUED ME), and Warner Brothers artist FRANKIE BALLARD (BAREFEET) and many, many, more. A natural born entertainer, he is a bundle of energy, often described as a 'cross between professional wrestling and tractor pull" something you just have to see to appreciate. His songwriting is instinctive, covering many genres, and always lives up to a line in his songwriting anthem, "TABLES AND CHAIRS" that says, "You don't choose music, music chooses you."

With Marc-Alan Barnette, it seems music has chosen wisely.

#329 - Build, Maintain, and Grow13 Aug 202400:49:44

When it comes to such simple things as communication, networking, and even relationships, there are three basic skills you need to remember. You need to build upon the relationship. You also need to maintain them, and work towards them growing. Joining us in the studio is music industry veteran Lyn Stevens who is an award winning photographer, who combines her love of photography with her passion for music. From that, she has learned the ability to network among industry peers, and shares her insight with our listeners. While on the subject, we also discuss documenting your career with photography, and how important it is in the bigger picture.

Since her days as a producer at WIBA-FM and Morning DJ & Country Music Director WDUX in Wisconsin, Lyn has always had the bug to work in the music industry. Working in radio provided Lyn the opportunity to meet and interview legendary performers such as Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Charlie Daniels, Loretta Lynn, and The Kentucky Headhunters among many others.

After moving to Nashville in 2009, her photography "hobby" started catching the eye of local performers. In 2012, the door was opened as Lyn was honored to have 3 of her photos on display as part of the Cameras and Community in Action Project at The Frist Center for The Visual Arts. Her work went on to be featured in Country Weekly, Billboard Magazine and the Nashville Music Guide.

In late 2014, she was asked by country legends, Little Texas, to shoot the photos for their album, "Young for A Long Time," which garnered her the award for "Best Visual Art" at the 2015 Nashville Independent Music Awards.

She added the title, "International Photographer" to her resume, after documenting a Blues/Rock tour to Australia in 2016 and another tour to Iceland in 2018. Her work has since been seen on television in Australia and in newspapers and magazines throughout Europe.

She approaches photography as a documentarian, based off the strong belief that she is documenting future history, in the present-day moment.

#302 - Getting Feedback and Results From Your Fans30 Jan 202400:35:57

Finn Hodgins, who is the Founder and CEO of Grouped, a platform where independent and label artists can create and engage their fans, and help turn them into a revenue stream for the artist. 90% of artists derive their income from their top 1% of their fan base. Grouped helps with the data entry, and the algorithms that the artist needs to achieve that goal. But there's so much more to this platform, and Finn shares all of the angles and aspects of Grouped, which is a way that an artist can provide their own social network, with ownership belonging to that creative person.

#300 - Our 300th Episode!16 Jan 202401:03:03

We can't believe it's been six years in the making to get to this moment, and we wanted to do something special… or at least different. For the first time ever, the host of the show, Bob Bender, becomes the guest! After all this time, we find out what makes Bob tick, how (and why) he got into the music business, and the reason he stuck with it for 50 plus years. He also shares some of the inner workings of the music business, including its sometimes not so nice side of the industry, along with the perils and pitfalls he faced along the way. Hosting the show is Bob's good friend, Joe Hand, who takes the helm, and asks the hard questions. There's even a nice little surprise at the end of the show that pretty much left Bob speechless (almost).

Joe Hand is a lifelong musician, producer, recording artist, and writer. A graduate of Boston's Berklee College of Music, Joe has been making music for over 35 years, both on stage, and in studios all over the world. He's worked with such diverse artists as Linkin' Park to John Michael Talbot.

#296 - Is The Vinyl Record Business Returning?13 Dec 202300:45:07

Back in 2014, there were 15 record pressing plants in the U.S. along with approximately 30 facilities around the globe. There are now 55 record pressing plants in the United States, and 200 plants worldwide. The demand for vinyl records has never been higher than it is now. Because the industry has become craft oriented in recent years, an employee who works in these facilities, which has anywhere from 5 to 14 presses, now has to go through at least 10 to 14 months of extensive training before they can ever press the button to create a vinyl record of consistent quality. But getting that quality to become the industry standard has taken time to get all of these plants on the same page. Enter Dustin Blocker and Alex Cushing along with their trade association VRMA.

After spending 17 years as the lead singer of the rock band, Exit 380, Dustin Blocker co-founded Texas-based independent record label Hand Drawn Records in April 2011. Spending several years building the community of artists through live events and regional record releases, Blocker, and business partner, Alex Cushing, launched the vinyl record manufacturing arm of the business, Hand Drawn Pressing in December 2014, with the newest vinyl record presses on the planet in over 34 years landing in January 2017. In December 2019, Blocker along with several other company leaders throughout the vinyl record supply chain, launched the trade organization, Vinyl Record Manufacturers Association (VRMA), whose membership includes; vinyl record pressing plants, PVC compounders, cutting engineers, electroplating houses, recording studios, brokers, printers and record labels.

#294 - Receiving Peer Support for Your Music28 Nov 202300:41:50

The best art doesn't always necessarily rise to the top anymore, it's more likely the best marketed art rises to the top. Author and music industry entrepreneur Jeremy Shiloh has been brainstorming this problem as how to get the best singer/songwriters to reach that goal. What came out of this process was to create a peer review process for the totally undiscovered singer/songwriter called Circate.

So exactly what is Circate? Cricket's peer promotion system is designed for creators, such as musicians, filmmakers, video game developers, and writers. The outcome of the peer support in determining your projects are solely judged by fellow creators. The system is designed to have no AI algorithms. Consumer markets, and marketing don't make a difference, and your creation is put on a level playing field, no matter who is involved in the process. Officially launching in January 2024, The program is currently in its Beta testing, and seeking creative people to be included in the journey. For further information, please visit their website:

#293 - The Ambassador of Country Music21 Nov 202300:24:07

A third-generation firefighter, Jason Byrd has always had another fire burning within … as a traditional country music singer, songwriter and performer. Mentored by none other than George Jones,  Byrd has played stages across the US and Canada, opening for powerhouse artists such as Tracy Lawrence, Loretta Lynn, Mark Chesnutt, Dierks Bentley and, of course, George Jones. Jason has appeared on the world-famous Grand Ole Opry and made multiple TV appearances. In 2019, Jason retired from his post as a Battalion Chief of the Tallahassee Fire Department to focus on music.

Byrd released a self-penned duet with George Jones called, "Better Life," which he'd kept under wraps for years prior. The song was ready for release just prior to Jones' passing and Byrd held onto it out of respect for his friend. In 2021, with the blessing of Nancy Jones, he released the tune, which was nominated for Single of the Year at the Josie Music Awards. Jason was invited to perform the song recently for celebrity guests at a VIP dinner in Hunstville, AL prior to the Still Playin' Possum concert marking a decade since the passing of George Jones.

Jason currently has two songs nominated for the 2023 Josie Music Awards Song of the Year and continues to delight real country fans with a full tour schedule. After working several shows with Lauren Spring, another Florida-based writer, Byrd chose to record and release "Gulf Coastin'" as a Summer song for 2023.

#292 - The Paralysis of Decision Making14 Nov 202300:43:03

On August 13th, 2011, prior to an outdoor performance at the Indiana State Fair by the hit Country recording act "Sugarland", an approaching severe thunderstorm hit the temporary roof structure of the stage, causing it to collapse. The structure landed among a crowd of spectators, killing seven people and injuring 58 others. The cause was later determined to be a breakdown or lack of communication (a paralysis of sorts) between the Fair management, the production company, and the band, among other entities. Out of this, it was determined that there needs to be a certification process, not only for the actual production aspect, but also the people who put these shows together. Enter Jim Digby.

Jim Digby, PMP, is the President of Show Makers, Inc., which proves strategic, tactical and operational project and production management support in the delivery of live events and music touring. He is also the Cofounder and President of the Event Safety Alliance, a Board member of Behind the Scenes Charity, and a frequent keynote speaker and presenter in matters relating to event safety, the events production career path, and mental health in live events. Jim tirelessly and passionately advocates for the safety, health and sustainability of the industry at large.

Jim's nearly four-decade journey in production, operations, and project management roles within the live entertainment, corporate, and music touring industry has had him working alongside artists as diverse as Linkin Park, Enrique Iglesias, Back Street Boys, the Bolshoi Ballet, Phil Collins, and most recently delivering marquee corporate events. Jim also spent four years delivering entertainment mega-projects inside Saudi Arabia including the first-ever international music festival in the Kingdom in 2018.

On this episode, when we first put this together, our guest Scott Welch indicated that we could pick the topics of discussion, as long we didn't involve how quantum physics works. We agreed. So instead, we chat about the aspects of the music business, from Artificial Intelligence, to touring, to managing acts, and how artists need to take control of their careers. In other words, we take a peek behind the curtain, and chat about all things regarding the music biz!

#287 - What's The Romance With Radio?10 Oct 202301:06:31

On this week's episode, we have a discussion with Johnny Dwinell regarding what it is that drives artists to hear their songs on radio… and is it worth the cost?

Today's terrestrial radio is attempting to figure out what their future is in the overall spectrum of things. At the same time, the record business is looking to see what their next step might be.Currently they're going to go with the devil they know (the current format and programming), yet knowing that it's not working, and not try the devil they don't know, which is streaming platforms.

At the same time, you as the independent artist need to know your customer listening base. Hollywood has figured it out, by knowing who their customer is has become the new norm in television. Why hasn't the record business, or the music industry as a whole caught up to that paradigm shift?

In order to even get the attention of radio these days, you need the following:

  1. You Need Spins to achieve market penetration

  2. You need 40 to 70 spins in each market to achieve that penetration

  3. You need to be in for the long haul (6 to 9 months)

  4. Those spins have to happen during peak listening hours

  5. The radio station has to have sufficient listenership

While all this is going on, you as the artist need to understand that in the record label's eyes, you're a small business. These days, record companies are in the business of acquiring small businesses. They just don't know how to make that profitable for them.

Few people have experienced the music business from as many different angles as Johnny Dwinell. An expert in the fields of digital marketing and social media growth and engagement, Johnny has worked with some of music's most notable names, produced albums, co-founded a well-known music business podcast and started a Nashville-based artist development company. Johnny co-founded Daredevil Production in 2012 with a focus on breaking artists in the digital world. Over the years, he has headed up digital marketing for cruises featuring popular artists like Tracy Lawrence, Ty Herndon, Jamie O'Neal and Andy Griggs. John's marketing expertise has also been used to sell out shows for country music legends T.G. Sheppard, Ronnie McDowell, and BJ Thomas.

#286 - The Gatekeeper Has Left The Building03 Oct 202300:42:03

Originally a songwriter from Arkansas, Randy Barber moved to Nashville to try his hand at writing hits with some of the best on Music Row. He soon discovered that the bar for great material was set high, and he had to make the decision to either return home, or figure out a way to become a better writer.

Soon enough, Randy discovered he had other talents more acclimated for behind the scenes of the music business, and formed his company, Bar Frog Music. Part of his company's endeavors is focusing on what can be considered the complicated issue of music publishing.

On this episode, we talk about royalties, how radio has a play in that stake (or doesn't), and how independent artists have opportunities to succeed, where previously those opportunities were not available to them. We just have to remember where terrestrial radio equated to one to many, social media, and streaming platforms are one to one, which can level the playing field for today's independent artist.

#285 - Questions and Answers26 Sep 202300:49:55

Some weeks back, we posted the question to our followers on Facebook and Linkedin asking for topics of discussion you'd like for us to cover on an upcoming episode of "The Business Side of Music" podcast. On this special episode, we cover several of those questions submitted by our listeners. Joining us in the studio is Vinny Ribas, who is the founder of "Indie Connect", along with his new educational program "Cartne" who helps provide the answers, and some insight in the process.

We cover such things as to whether Apple Podcasts or Spotify is a better platform. Will the NFT format take off like vinyl, CD's, and cassettes before. How can emerging artists navigate the challenges of self-promotion and building a brand. When should you introduce children to an instrument. How can an artist improve their earnings from recorded music, what makes a song a hit, and so many other questions.

#284 - How A.I. Can Help Promote Your Music19 Sep 202300:32:32

The buzzword these days is AI. "Artificial Intelligence". It's a scary topic of discussion if we allow it to be. But there are good opportinities to use AI, and Paul Loeb who is the founder and CEO of DropTrack has found a way to have it work in the music industry for independent artists.

When Paul started a record label several years ago, he experienced the pains of music promotion, which led him to create DropTrack. What he discovered along the way, is there are more opportunities than ever for musicians, but it's hard to discover the right ones and cut through the noise of the competition. What he did was create DropTrack, which uses AI to help artists save time promoting their music, so they can focus on what they do best. From promoting your music to online streaming services, to writing a press release using their AI PR Agent, which can write a press release for your music simply by uploading the song.

The company also provides a service called "Done For You", wherein Drop Track acts as your agent, where they help in promoting the music, do a personalized outreach to applicable influencers, along with providing reports on who is listening to your music.

DropTrack's mission is to connect musicians around the world with their best opportunities for success.

Paul Loeb is a seasoned executive in the music and technology industries, best known as the Founder and CEO of DropTrack, a cutting-edge AI-powered music promotion platform. With over two decades of experience, Loeb's journey in the music industry has been marked by his passion for music, technical expertise, and a relentless drive to innovate.

#327 - The Journey Home Project30 Jul 202400:36:28

It is a significant milestone for the Charlie Daniels Patriot Awards Dinner, which will be held on September 11, 2024, at City Winery Nashville. The awards dinner is a program of The Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project, a 501c3 that supports military veterans, first responders and their families. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the program, co-founded by Country Music legend, Charlie Daniels with his longtime manager, David Corlew. Although Daniels passed in 2020, his musical legacy lives on, and his devotion to veterans causes continues through the dedication of Corlew. Through fundraising events, the organization supports the efforts of other not-for-profit organizations providing services to U.S. veterans and first responders; selected for providing the most meaningful work with the lowest overhead. TCHJHP has raised more than $4 million for these organizations.

Corlew shares his story of how he got into the business, first working at a record store, then becoming a roadie for Charlie Daniels, before becoming his manager for the next 30+ years of Charlie's career.

#282 - It's More Than Just Background Music05 Sep 202300:36:23

Did you know that 70% to 75% of businesses today don't know that they're not supposed to be using consumer services such as Pandora or Spotify to play music in their business establishments? That's over four million businesses in the United States alone. Having a license from just ASCAP, BMI, GMR or SESAC will not cover all the songs on their playlists. There has to be a more inclusive and overall encompassing way to go about ensuring that the music you're playing in your restaurant or store is legally covered. Artists, along with rights holders of music are leaving 5 to 10 times of what they would earn in a traditional streaming service by not ensuring that they're getting paid for their music being played in a commercial environment.

There has to be a way to educate not only the businesses, but also the rights owners of the music for such endeavors. Enter Lisa Farris.

Lisa Farris is the CMO of the company "Soundtrack Your Brand", which is a B2B Company based out of Stockholm Sweden, providing . She is a graduate of Rutgers University, a former employee of the Recording Academy, Music Marketing Network, and Universal Music Group. Sountrack Your Brand provides over 90 million tracks, building playlists designed for the business, based on the demographics of your customers.

#281 - The Fame Will Come and Go But You Can Always Write29 Aug 202300:34:21

Hailing from the foothills of the North Georgia Appalachian Mountains, Charlsey Etheridge's roots in Americana Music run deep. There she learned to sing harmony around her grandmother's piano after church on Sundays and taught herself guitar chords from her mother's old Emmylou Harris songbook. She wrote her first song at the young age of 7 while riding through the woods in her step-father's old army jeep.

After moving to Nashville in 2003, Charlsey was immersed into the Nashville songwriting culture, working alongside such music industry veterans as Harley Allen and Steve Wariner. "Even though Harley is no longer with us, I am often reminded of an invaluable piece of advice he left me," Etheridge reflects. "He said, 'just remember... fame will come and go... but you can ALWAYS write.' As a young 23 year old, I didn't think much of that statement at the time, but through the years, his words resonate with me more and more."

In 2013, Etheridge released her first full-length studio album, appropriately titled, Memories of Mine. The critically acclaimed record intimately paid homage to the sounds of her youth, exploring the Bluegrass, Gospel, and old Folk songs her grandmother used to sing to her. Memories received stellar reviews in such bluegrass and roots music publications as No Depression and The Bluegrass Situation. The 2013 album set the stage for Charlsey's future success in Americana and Roots music.

In 2021, Etheridge collaborated with legendary guitarist Jack Pearson (of Allmon Brothers Band fame) to release a previously recorded, newly mastered five-song EP, An Acoustic Christmas with Charlsey and Jack. The holiday album blends Jack's lyrical musicality and lightning-precise fingerwork and with Charlsey's butter-smooth voice in a not-to-be-forgotten compilation of holiday favorites.

Now, nearly 8 years after her first studio album, Charlsey is releasing a compilation of original music, entitled Scars of Mine. She has joined forces with MuzikMafia veteran, Jerry Navarro (Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson), who is also the founder of the new Indy label, The Frequency Spot (of which Etheridge is also an active artist). Joining Charlsey in this collaboration are band members Marcus Finnie (Lady A, Keb Mo, Taj Mahal), Walt Scott, Chris Walters (Barbara Mandrell), and Pat Bergeson (Suzy Bogguss, Lyle Lovett, Chet Atkins). The project is co-produced by sought after guitarist and musician, Pat Bergeson. Scars of Mine is slated for release in 2023.

#280 - Develop Something Unique22 Aug 202300:37:03

"I Can Lead An Artist Into the Studio, But I Can't Make Them Tour."

It's a line that composer, entrepreneur, and businessman Eric Copeland has been using for years.

Copeland grew up in a very musical and creative family. His mother was a church organist and piano teacher, and his father was a band leader and singer. At a young age Eric was working with a tape recorder, singing and writing songs, and thinking up creative stuff all night long.

By college, he found himself playing in local bands in the Lexington, KY area. Foolishly not concentrating in music while attending college, he did however get into a traveling hotel pop band, traveling the Midwest, eventually ending up in Chicago, IL. He then spent the next 5 years in the Chicagoland area working with bands and singers, going back to school (although still not concentrating in music), and honing his writing and arranging skills on keyboard.

By the time Eric moved back to Lexington at the end of 1989, he was looking to start a new chapter. He met his wife, and officially hung a shingle as a songwriter and arranger. By the mid-90s, he had added producing artists as a side job. His fledgling recording and production company Creative Soul Records flourished with artists coming from all around the US. In 2005, he moved his production and consulting business to Nashville, TN, with his company producing dozens of artists per year, garnering awards and radio play for his clients. In 2009, he realized that he wasn't finished learning, and in 2013 finished a degree in Music History and Music Business. In May of 2021, Eric went on to earn a Master's degree in Music Composition at the University of Central Florida. His focus these days is composition for various music libraries, one on one teaching in person, online, and through his YouTube channels MakeMusicIncome.com and HelloComposers.com, and continuing to work with artists, producers, composers, and musicians around the world, along with helping them develop something unique in their careers.
