| The Power of Belief: Understanding Placebo and Nocebo Effects | 29 Jan 2025 | 00:24:49 | |
Our beliefs shape our reality in more ways than we realize. What if simply believing in a treatment could lead to real, measurable healing? And on the flip side, could negative expectations actually worsen our symptoms? On this episode of Building Resilience, we explore the fascinating world of the placebo and nocebo effects: how our minds influence our bodies in profound ways. We'll dive into a scientific study about housekeepers, and the surprising effects of an open-label placebo. Plus, how our daily rituals, environment, and even the language we use can reinforce either healing or harm. Resources:

The balance between effort and surrender can be a tricky one to strike—we often feel the need to fix issues as soon as they come up. But in reality, surrendering to challenging times can actually have the opposite effect. On this episode of Building Resilience, we go over how we can achieve that balance between effort and surrender—where transformation and growth often occur. | The Power Shift: Transforming from Victim to Agent | 16 Feb 2023 | 00:33:49
When bad things happen, it can be easy to feel like the world is out to get us. It can feel like we have no control over what is happening. We may not be able to control what’s happening, but fortunately we have control over how we feel about it (yes, really!). While it's important to process the emotions that come with being a victim of a circumstance, focusing on it in the long term may not serve us well. When we're ready, a shift can occur that starts with our mindset. By changing our perspective, we can transform from feeling powerless to feeling empowered: from victim to agent. | All About Compassion Fatigue | 18 Jan 2023 | 00:19:29
Compassion fatigue is a little known affliction which can affect so many helping professionals. It’s a combination of burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and running out of empathy, and it can be so hard to manage. I've talked about compassion fatigue before, but today I will go more in depth on the concept of compassion fatigue and the various helping professionals who may experience it. On today's episode, we're going to delve into the contributing factors to compassion fatigue, such as a lack of appreciation, being overworked, underpaid, and exposed to traumatic events and people. We take a deep dive into the physical, psychological, emotional, professional, and spiritual symptoms of compassion fatigue, which can develop gradually or suddenly. We'll also consider the typical factors in professional caregiving environments that contribute to compassion fatigue, such as performance demands exceeding human capabilities, insufficient resources to meet patient needs, and ongoing exposure to traumatic events. In addition, I also mention a 30 item screening test developed by Beth Hudnall Stamm called the Professional Quality of Life Self-Score Measure (or the "pro qual" for short). You can find that here. | I Don’t Know How, But I Know It’s Possible | 06 Nov 2024 | 00:13:36
Life doesn't give us the answers we want, at least not right away. Facing challenges without knowing how things will work out can feel overwhelming. But what if, instead of focusing on the how, we focused on the simple belief that it's possible? On this episode of Building Resilience, we'll break down the mantra, "I don't know how, but I know it's possible." I share personal stories, including my son's journey and the profound lesson he taught me, and a reminder that sometimes we need to remember that the absence of something in your life can be a sign that its opposite exists. | Seven Questions to Measure Your Gain | 12 Oct 2022 | 00:17:48
Last week, I shared an episode called "The Gap and the Gain", which follows the premise of an excellent book with the same title by Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy. I recommend listening to that episode first if you haven't heard it yet, but if you haven't heard it yet, the gist is this: you can have a "gap" mindset of what you lack, or a "gain" mindset of your potential. In this episode, we talk about ways to stay in that more positive "gain" mindset—seven questions you can ask yourself to be exact! | The Gap and the Gain | 05 Oct 2022 | 00:26:43
I'm a big reader, and every once in a while I come across an idea or a book that I just HAVE to share with everybody. When it has to do with my clients or listeners, even more so! Today's one of those days. The book "The Gap and the Gain" by Dan Sullivan really hit me hard—and as soon as I read about the concept I just knew you all would love it. In a nutshell, there are two sort of mindsets we can be in, "the gap" and "the gain". When we're in "the gap", our thoughts tend toward thinking what we lack, while in "the gain", we think of our potential and what we've already got. The best part? Our situation doesn't have to change in order to switch mindsets—which means that those thoughts are completely within our control.

| Advice and Criticism | 10 Aug 2022 | 00:20:00 | |
The other day I came across a quote: "Don't take criticism from someone you would not go to for advice". It was such a good quote, I knew a social media post alone wouldn't suffice—I had to make it a whole podcast episode. Taking criticism and advice are two sides of the same coin, but at their core, they aren't really that different. Anybody can offer you words—you then get to decide how you interpret those words. | The Five Channels | 20 Jul 2022 | 00:16:30
There are lots and lots of benefits about planning in the future. However, being in the present is also really important for your nervous system—reminding your nervous system, it's safe. It doesn't have to worry about the threats that it perceives in the past or in the future, because none of those threats exist when you are in the here and now. On this episode of Building Resilience, I'm going to explain the explain a tool called "the five channels", originally coined by Bebe Hansen (if you like my interpretation, please check hers out too!). How can you figure out what channel is right for the right moment? And how can switching channels be a game changer? Visit me on Facebook or Instagram. | Grounding with the Fives | 13 Jul 2022 | 00:18:43
We have five ways to interact with the world around us. It's how we percieve everything in our lives. Those ways? Our senses. Because our senses only allow us to percieve the world in real time, they can be used to ground ourselves. On this episode of Building Resilience, I'm going to go over how to best do that—demonstrating using some examples in my own life as well as some thoughts on how YOU can use these techniques. | The Power of Questions | 06 Jul 2022 | 00:20:06
We've all got a superpower. It can catch attention, plant ideas in peoples' minds, and help us learn. That superpower? Asking questions. Since our brain is always a work in progress, science has shown that questions are a way to break out of the ruts and worn-down neural pathways in order to create new habits, try new things, and challenge our mindsets. On this episode of Building Resilience, we're going to talk all about these questions—and how we can use them to our advantage in relationships and all over our life. | Who is in Your Car | 15 Jun 2022 | 00:17:33
I love coming up with analogies. I love hearing them. If you're still a fan of this podcast, you probably are too! So picture this and let's see if it works for you: We are all in a car driving along to our destination: life. The question is who is driving your car? Now sometimes we allow our survival brain (or the monkey as I often call it) to be driving. Fea, and other emotions (which make up our survival brain) are all very real, and we do need them along in our journey, but they are not necessarily good drivers. On today's episode I'll help you to identify who's driving, who's your passenger, and what to do if you want to switch who's driving! Visit me on Facebook or Instagram. | Navigating the C's | 08 Jun 2022 | 00:18:45
Just like sailing an ocean, life can throw you some unexpected waves. As I thought back on some of the lessons I've learned recently I realized that all the important emotions for me seem to start with the letter C and it's kind of true—the letter C is everywhere along the path to confidence and resilience. So I wanted to share that path with you today—as well as an easy to remember them (I'm sure you'll "C" what I mean). Visit me on Facebook or Instagram. | Clean Pain and Dirty Pain | 01 Jun 2022 | 00:30:42
When you hear the word "pain" you probably instantly think it's a negative. And while pain is never going to feel "positive", there are different types of pain. Today, we're going to talk about two different types of pain—clean pain and dirty pain. Which one is healthy, can help you heal, learn, and move forward, and which one hurts, can postpone our recovery, and that we can actually choose. Visit me on Facebook or Instagram. | Building Communication Resilience when Connection is Broken with Sheila MacDonald | 11 May 2022 | 00:45:13
I'm doing a series of episodes in May about communication. After last week's episode about connection—I wanted to talk about what happens when that connection fails. And I've got just the person to help us explore that: Sheila MacDonald. Sheila MacDonald is a speech-language pathologist who is passionate about communication and rebuilding competence in those who have experienced communication disability after brain injury. Her work includes the development of two standardized tests, the CCCABI referral tool, practice guidelines, research, and international collaboration. Her acclaimed clinical short courses draw on years of experience in both hospitals and community practice where she now assists individuals with return to social, academic, and workplace communications. As a lifelong advocate, she is constantly seeking new ways to repair and celebrate connection.
