55: Building and affording a team with Ashley Ebert
Welcome to episode 55 of the Build That Business Podcast! Today, I have the lovely Ashley Ebert to talk about building and affording a team.
Ashley works alongside her dad Dale as the Daughter and Dad duo behind the abundance group. They’re a coaching company that helps creative entrepreneurs build their teams. Ashley owns one of the largest wedding planning companies in the group (Simply Elegant), which currently has generated over 3.5 million dollars in sales and a team of over 40 planners. Amazing right?!In other words - this girl knows what she’s talking about.
I’ve invited Ashley on the show to talk about building a team today because if I had to guess, it’s something that you might not have thought about. I know a lot of us are solopreneurs in the wedding industry - myself included! So I wanted to bring a different perspective to the podcast today, because I LOVE learning from brilliant minds like Ashley and I’ve told her about us. She knows that a lot of our community are mighty teams of one and bringing on a team can be a little nerve wrecking. So we talk about the opportunity vs. rick, how to afford hiring a team and when to know when you’re ready.
And if you love what you learn here today, I want to check out Ashley and Dales new course called Building Your Team - It officially launches TODAY today August 10th (if you’re listening to this when the episode drops). It’s a step by step course to lead you from solopreneur, to a leader of a thriving team. They walk you through how to structure your team, how to find and interview amazing talent, onboarding, payroll, legal - all the things. If you’re at the stage in your business where you’re thinking about maybe bringing on some help, I want you to check this out because doors are only open from August 10th-17th. You can check that out at www.LindsayJWilliams.com/TAG
I’d be willing to bet that you’ve heard the term, “Ideal Client”. It’s kind of this vague marketing term that we all know we need to narrow down, but sometimes we overcomplicate it. We brainstorm some imaginary person on paper that checks off all of the boxes without really thinking about who we actually enjoy working with. But what I told you, that your ideal client is probably someone you’ve already worked with before? Someone right under your nose!
In today’s episode, we’ll break down: 1. What exactly is an ideal client and how do you find them and more people exactly like them? 2. How to generate more leads into your wedding business. 3. How to strategize, plan, and write your marketing content to speak directly to the customers you want to serve.
I can still remember when I threw my name in the hat and sent a podcast pitch to Cami and Elisabeth of the Biz Birthday Bash. These two powerhouses in the industry and I've been a listener of their podcast from day one. So, when they replied that they'd love to have me on the show - I was beyond excited. And I can tell you, these ladies are a riot. They're hilarious, wildly smart, and so genuinely kind. I can honestly say that this is the favorite interview that I've ever done as a guest. So much so that I asked them if I could share it on my show.
Now this is a little different for the podcast because I'm sharing my interview, from Elisabeth's and Cami's show. This was a conversation that we had as 3 entrepreneurs in the stationery world about putting people over profit.
I hope that you'll listen with an open heart because the customer service approach that we talked about in the episode is really what helped all 3 of us grow our businesses. I hope that this interview gives you a different view of the entrepreneur that lands in your earbuds each and every week - it was fun to be on the other side of the mic for once! So without further ado, here is my interview on The Biz Birthday Bash podcast.

50: How to get noticed in your business - PR for creative entrepreneurs with Meghan Ely
05 Jul 2022
00:44:55
Welcome to the Build that Business podcast, episode number 50. Let me ask you, when you hear the word “PR” - what comes to mind? Is it something you’re implementing in your wedding business or do you brush it off and jot it down on the to-do list for “someday when I have more time?” I’ll admit, I was the latter for far too long but once I realized the power of PR, it opened so many new doors for my business and that’s why I’m excited to introduce you to our guest today.
In this episode, I’m sitting down with Meghan Ely of OFD Consulting and we are talking about all things PR - how to get press for your business. How to get visible to the people you want to serve, how to get people talking about you, and how to gain social proof. This episode is packed with tangible things that you can do to get noticed.
We talked about - Where to start with PR if this is a new strategy for your business. - How to create editorial relationships. - How much time we should be allocating weekly to press initiatives and why it’s important - When it’s time to bring in a publicist (this answer might surprise you) - How to create SMART goals around your PR strategy.
Meghan combines in-the-trenches event experience with a love of wedding PR to empower her clients to take their business to new heights. This conversation was such a treat because I really think PR is an untapped marketing opportunity for so many creative business owners. If you’re not yet considering how to get press for your business, I want you to listen to this. It opened my eyes in so many ways. Without further ado, let’s dive in!
Thanks for tuning into today’s episode of the Build That Business Podcast!
Welcome to the build that business podcast, episode 49. Today, I’m sitting down with the lovely Sarah Lewis of Slate and Brush to talk about her slow growth strategy. This episode took so many amazing turns, I can’t wait for you to dive in.
We talked about learning what to say yes to in the beginning stages of your business, how to grow a portfolio of work that people actually WANT to buy, the importance of staying true to yourself as you build your business (instead of trying to be like everyone else) and how to trust the process when you’re playing the “long game” while building your business. This conversation with Sarah was such a pleasure because while I agree that slow growth makes for strong roots - it’s not always easy you’re in the thick of it. Sarah explains what slow growth is, how she did it and and how it’s paid off of her business. Without further ado, let’s dive in!
I am so excited to introduce you to your new digital marketing best friend - she really needs no introduction but here it is:
She’s a mom of two, the host of the Goal Digger podcast, author, educator, and the one helping us ask better questions, Jenna Kutcher. In today’s episode, we dug into topics like how to take a leap of faith, how a season of hustle got her to the harvest she has today (I asked if she would’ve done anything differently as she built her empire), and how to learn to listen to your intuition… we covered it ALL just for your ears today.
In her debut book, “How Are You Really?” Jenna goes a step further with the question all of us seem to skim past.
When someone asks “How are you?” … I’m going to guess that you reply with “Fine, Good, Great, Hanging in there!” I know, I’m guilty of it too. But Jenna added one simple word that can change everything - that can start us on a path to creating our own truly fulfilled life. She asks, “How are you, really?”
What if we stopped ourselves and truthfully answered that question? What truths might we uncover? Jenna pulls back the layers and shows us how to find that answer. And how to create the future we want with the tools we have - by getting to know the most important person on the journey - ourselves. The book releases June 28th but if you’re tuning in before then, you can preorder now at www.howareyoureallybook.com (and snag her amazing pre-order bonuses).
Oh, and Jenna and I have an extra special treat for you. We’re giving away 10 copies of the book! All you need to do is screenshot yourself listening and tag Jenna and I. I’ll draw the winners on Launch day (June 28th)
Without further ado - let’s welcome Ms. Jenna Kutcher to the show!
Ready to dive in? In today's episode, we'll cover: 1. How to take a leap of faith when you don’t have the security cushion of your 9-5 (maybe due to the pandemic, recession, lay offs). 2. Is hustle really a dirty word? I asked Jenna about her seasons of hustle as she built her empire and if she would do anything differently today. 3. How to trust your intuition. Jenna teaches us how to listen to our own voice and how to make decisions that align with our values and goals for our life.

47: Staying in front of your audience using bridal shows with Kristen DeBats
15 Jun 2022
00:43:58
You’re listening to the Build That Business Podcast, episode 47. Today, I have my good friend Kristen DeBats coming on the show to talk about my favorite thing even - I’m in heaven. Today, we’re talking about bridal shows, wedding shows and the power of staying in front of your audience face-to-face. Kristen is part of the Wedding In New York team (they serve Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse) and she and her team throw the most wonderful bridal shows. I owe so much of my success to her and I’m just so grateful for her.
What we’ll cover : 1. Bridal Show Myths. Why do you think that bridal shows sometimes get a bad wrap? People say they won't work, they’re full of freebie seekers, their ideal client isn’t at the show - ALL total excuses in my opinion. But let’s just talk about those and nip them in the bud. 2. Why is face to face marketing still important in the age of social media? 3. How to choose what event is right for you and your business? What are the first steps if people listening are like - okay I’m ready to give this a shot! 4. How to prepare for a Bridal Show - the show prep, what to do at the show, and the follow up. 5. How to track your ROI. Was the show worth it?

You’re listening to the Build That Business podcast, episode 46.
Can I be honest with you for a sec? I didn’t want to record this episode because it kind of feels like I’m breaking bad news to a friend. I see so many people in my community eager to add on more, and say yes to all of these new and exciting opportunities - and I know this lights you up but as your BUSINESS coach - I have to grab you by the shoulders, look you in the eye and break something to you. This is KILLING your wedding business.
What If I told you that I was able to grow my wedding stationery business to $300k in yearly revenue by only offering 3 paper types, 95% digital printing and really none of the fancy upgrades. Because let me break it down - the more variables you add the more complicated things get. Finding vendors, sourcing material, production time, production process, quoting, even things like encouraging your couples to make a decision or say yes to working with you.
KEEP IT SIMPLE. And I know in an industry like the wedding industry this isn’t always easy. People want what they want and new trends are popping up all the time. It can be so easy to hop from one thing to the next and lose sight of how you want to run your business. So today, I want to talk more about your offerings (your products and services) and how pairing this down is going to change your business. In today's episode, we'll cover how doing it all is killing your margins, profits, quoting process and production.
Ready to dive in? Let’s listen!

Maybe you’re not quite at a place in your business where you can hire a team of people - BUT you can sure as heck get a team of tools on board to help you run more efficiently. Believe me, I scaled my business from $30 to $300k as a mighty team of ONE. Automation is my middle name… so excited to dive in today.
Ready to get started in? In today's episode, we'll cover: 1. How I use HoneyBook to automate proposals, contracts and invoices in my wedding business 2. Free training mentioned in the episode: LindsayJWilliams.com/masterclass Free guide mentioned in the episode: LindsayJWilliams.com/competition Book mention in the episode: Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne
You’re listening to the Build That Business podcast, episode 41. I don’t know if anyone listening can relate to this - but when I first started my business I constantly looked at what the competition was doing. I built my website just like theirs, I chose my brand colors to look similar to theirs. I used language like, ‘We’ or ‘Our team of experts' to make me look bigger than I was so that I could be in the same league as the big wedding stationery companies.
Can anyone relate to this? Or maybe you’re following a bunch of your competitors and you’re getting ideas from there? They’re doing instagram reels so you need to do reels. They’re offering a certain type of service, so maybe that’s something you should offer? I know I’m not alone here.
So today, we're NOT going to talk about how to compare yourself to your competition, we’re not going to talk about how to get ahead, or how to be better than them. We're going to go a step above all of that … we’re going to cover how to make the competition totally irrelevant. We’re going to open up a whole new dimension to your business and a new way of thinking about your marketing. Get ready to blow your mind.

Welcome to the Build That Business podcast, episode number 37. Today is going to be a short episode, because we’re talking about the importance of taking a creative break and I’m going to practice what I preach.
I know that being an entrepreneur can bring along stressors. From family obligations to juggling your client’s needs, to growing your business, to that little voice in the back of your head reminding you of all of the things you need to be doing. And trust me I get it, It’s kind of stressful isn’t it? You set out to start your own business for freedom, it’s supposed to be rewarding, inspiring and fun - and yet, we feel overwhelmed, and we feel isolated, we feel guilty that this life is what we wanted but we’re still not happy all the time.
I know for me it feels so chaotic, being a mom of a toddler, running a business - it sometimes feels like everything's on fire all the time and you’re just running from one thing to the next (can you relate). To me it’s like, “can I just get a minute to think about what the heck I’m doing?” So, that’s all I wanted to do in this episode - is just give you permission to take a minute. Will you take a deep breath with me and recognize the value of stepping back and strategically planning what we're doing? Isn't it funny how we forget this stuff? We forget to pause, plan, think. We think there’s no time for it but in reality this is the most important thing you can do for your business.
So press play on this episode and let's give ourselves permission to pause...
