If you're pursuing a performance degree, you may be wondering, "What else can I do with this degree?" It turns out, a lot more than you think! Today, we've brought to the podcast our friend Hannah Flam, a New York City-based performer and project manager. Hannah received her BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Michigan and now works as a digital marketing project manager for the Department of Neurosurgery at Lenox Hill Hospital. When Hannah took a break from performing to recover from an injury, she discovered new ways to use her creative skills in a field she never would've expected--healthcare administration!
We talked to Hannah about all the different ways she uses what she learned from her theatre degree, the pros and cons of having a full time job outside of performing, and how she's been able to reclaim her love of performing on her own terms after recovering from what could've been a career-ending injury. Can you imagine booking your Broadway debut from a single self-tape? For so many actors, it often feels like sending in tapes is sending them into the void. "I actually know my songs are good. I believe that for myself, independently. I had to tell myself: you're allowed to start saying this to yourself. It's not arrogance, it's not even confidence, it's just knowing, it's peace."
After 20 years in the industry, this is what Gavin Creel finally starting saying to himself.
"I spent a lot more time getting my value and my worth from outside forces. But the pandemic took that away. There were no outside forces. There was no applause. There was no positive feedback loop."

There's a classic saying in our industry that if there's anything else you love to do as much or more than theater, do that. In my opinion, that advice is outdated. We've seen time and time again that some of the most successful performers are multi-passionate multi-hyphenates. They wear a lot of hats.
