| Mike Garner Mayor of Broadstairs | 04 Feb 2026 | 00:23:32 | |
Today we talk with the Mayor of Broadstairs Mike Garner About The Mayor – Cllr Mike Garner Cllr Garner was the first ever Green Party councillor elected in 2019 onto both the Town and District councils representing the people in the ward of St Peter’s, a role he has thoroughly enjoyed. In 2020 he became leader of the Green Party at Thanet District Council. He is now particularly pleased to be the first Green Party councillor to have been elected as a Mayor in Thanet but acknowledges that it is not a party-political role. Instead, he recognises it as an opportunity to work with all councillors, council officers, and residents to make the town a place to be proud to live in and one which visitors want to stay and come back to.

| Martin Cheek Mosaics | 13 Feb 2026 | 00:21:41 | |
Martin Cheek is a versatile mosaic artist who initially founded the technique of incorporating glass fusions into his mosaics. In so doing, he essentially transformed the art and added unique textural interest to his work. The intricately detailed glass fusions, all made by Martin in his workshop, take his mosaics to another dimension, adding varying degrees of reflectivity and energy, something not easily obtained using traditional mosaic materials. Visit Martins website www.shopmartincheek.com Youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/@TheMartincheek Martin is originally from Birmingham, England, and was educated at Exeter College of Art and Design. He made award-winning films as a student, worked on several puppet animation projects including The Wind in the Willows, Paddington Bear, Noddy in Toyland and Portland Bill, before setting up his own production company, Cheeky Films, Ltd. He also served for many years as a part-time lecturer at the Royal College of Art and was an art critic for The Daily Express.

| St Peters in Thanet Church - An insight from Rev Matt & Rev Alice | 30 Mar 2026 | 00:40:44 | |
St. Peter’s church is in the centre of the Village of St. Peter’s, Broadstairs. It is largely of the Norman period in construction and is linked to St. John’s Church, Margate and St. Lawrence Church, Ramsgate. These three churches were chapels of ease to the mother church of St. Mary’s, Minster. There is no definite date for the original construction of St Peter’s but 1050 is quoted for St. John’s and 1062 for St. Lawrence therefore it is likely that between these dates St. Peter’s Chapel was constructed. The South aisle was the first chapel at St Peters, standing alone, but the church was enlarged to the north in 1180-1185. The present building has a late Norman nave and an Early English Chancel. The battlemented tower and the south porch are in the Perpendicular architectural style from the 15th Century. The tower is a prominent feature and, for long the highest point in Thanet, it was used as a Naval signalling station in Napoleonic times and still claims the right to fly the White Ensign.
| Morelli's Ice Cream - Joe Morelli | 27 Mar 2026 | 00:29:56 | |
Recorded live in Morelli's whilst customers enjoyed Coffee, tea and of course Ice Cream. Joe tells us about the history of Morelli's and where it is now and how the ice cream is made and about the staff who make it happen. The first Morelli's Ice Cream Parlour in the UK was opened by Mario on the Broadstairs seafront above the picturesque Viking Bay in Kent. Morelli’s in Broadstairs has, under the guidance of the Morelli family become a Mecca for gelato in the UK - set off by it’s iconic 1950’s flying canopy, Soda Fountain, original Lloyd Loom chairs and pink leatherette parlour seating. Mario’s son Joe was the first to serve 18 flavours of ice cream following the Parlour upgrade and expansion in 1959, followed by Marino who continued in his footsteps and made Morelli's what it is today.. Every morning since 1907, in a tradition continued to this day, the ice cream at Morelli's is made fresh in every store. https://www.morellisgelato.com MORELLI'S 14 VICTORIA PARADE BROADSTAIRS, KENT UNITED KINGDOM CT10 1QS

| Broadstairs Town Team- Kerry | 17 Mar 2026 | 00:32:35 | |
We are all volunteers who choose to work together for the good of our town. Why we started back in 2012 We came together to do positive things, where we can see ways we can help, to make our town even better than we already know it is. We love Broadstairs. We know that most of the people who live here do too and that visitors often fall in love with it from the moment they arrive. It's a great place. What we do Some projects are quite simple to bring to life, some take more planning and organisation and some things we choose not to take on, because we are all volunteers, we can only do what we can do. If you'd like to give an hour, share your skills to support any of our activities we'd be delighted. Why we need help from volunteers of all kinds There are some very specific skills you may use in your every day life that we always need more of, if you're a whizz at social media, design, artwork, project management or sourcing and applying for funding - and you'd like to put those skills to good use to support your community - we'd love to chat! We also rely on the generosity of time and skills donated to all the projects we manage by local people. There is an extraordinary willingness to volunteer in Broadstairs, not just for Town Team, but for the many other volunteer run community groups that make things happen. You can read more about our friends who support us here. We love to collaborate. We also put interested parties together within and for our community, to help make things happen for our town.

| The Palace Cinema Broadstairs - Corinna & Simon | 20 Apr 2026 | 00:43:40 | |
Corrina and Simon the owners of the Palace Cinema share their love and passion for this fascinating cinema. They bring their journey to making it an intimate place to enjoy a variety of Films both old and new to us. Originally The Windsor Cinema (1965 – 2006) York Gate Hall was opened for the summer season in 1965 as ‘York Gate Cinema’ by Jack Field who also owned the Carlton and Regal in nearby Westgateand Birchington. The following year it was fully converted into the The ‘Windsor’ with an enclosed projection box with 35mm projector, a new doorway cut into the frontage on Harbour Street, and a foyer leading to a blacked-out auditorium with curtained screen, 29 seats on the balcony and 126 seats in the stalls below. The internal layout has remained largely unchanged ever since. In 1974 the building was Grade II listed by Historic England. The Windsor changed hands in 1986, was renovated, and became the home once a week of Thanet Film Society (est.1995), part of the British Federation of Film Societies / Cinema for All, which expanded the cinema’s mainstream film programme to offer a weekly ‘art house’ film. The Palace (2006 – present) Starting in 2006, the cinema’s third owners transformed the, by then, slightly shabby Windsor into the ‘Palace’. The name change ushered in the cinema’s conversion to digital, with a 2K projector and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. They also installed a screen almost the width of the building, enlarged the foyer for more concessions space, reduced the total seating capacity to 111, refurbished throughout and brought in an illuminated cinema organ. In 2008 they were interviewed for an article in The Guardian featuring ‘10 of the best’ independent small cinemas in the UK. | Dog Behaviourist & trainer-Mitchell Kennington | 11 May 2026 | 00:46:26
Mitchell brings us a fascinating insight into the world of a dog behaviourist & trainer. I've spent the last 26 years volunteering at 3 animal santuaries doing 4500 hours and rehomed and rehabilitated over 1100 dogs...and studied widely on what helps Dogs feel calm and balanced I now work self employed as a dog behaviourist. I work one to one and come to you. I work through my vet and personal recommendation. I have a diploma in canine psychology. I can help with any issues and change any behaviour to calm whether it's reactivity, pulling , barking etc. These behaviours aren't the dogs character and they want to change and be calmer. I also do one to one puppy training. My main interest is how dogs think and how to help them to feel calm and secure through your guidance. I have helped 7 of my own troubled rescue dogs too. I also genuinely keep costs down and make it easily affordable because I want to help dogs be happier. I hope the 4500 hours of volunteering proves my integrity. You can contact Mitch and see so many positive comments about his skill from previous clients via his facebook page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100072533349451&sk=about
| Rev Rhodri Walters St Peters Baptiste Church | 07 May 2026 | 00:52:32 | |
For the past 220 years or so the church has worshipped on its current site. Older people in the community will remember it being called Salem but for the past 20 years it has been known simply as The Baptist Church, St Peters. There have been many ups and downs. At one time the church had to move off-site following a break-in and a fire. Our neighbours in the St Peter’s Parish church next door kindly let us use their community hall for our worship gathering on a Sunday morning. Following a time of growth at the end of the 1990’s and beginning of the 2000’s the church went through many struggles and following a few years of decline we had to approach our Baptist friends down at the Queens Road Baptist Church, Broadstairs, for some support in 2014. Now we host many community events which include social gatherings our food bank ,the Local wellbeing choir to name but a few .
| Community Payback in Broadstairs with Danny Ward | 04 May 2026 | 00:30:07 | |
Many of us see the Community Payback team working here in Broadstairs. On this podcast you will listen Danny speak about his passion for this service and what makes it work and how it helps those involved. Supervised by veteran Danny Ward, the Community Payback Team has spent the years revitalising Broadstairs. This partnership between the Town Council and the Tourism & Leisure Association allows offenders to serve their sentences by improving the local environment. The impact is twofold: the town gets high-quality labor—like the recent refurbishment of emotional memorial benches—and the participants gain life-changing skills. For many young people in the program, the "thank you's" they receive from the public provide a rare and powerful boost to their self-esteem, proving that hard work and community pride go hand-in-hand. | Crampton Museum and Tower Broadstairs- Peter Shaw | 14 May 2026 | 00:21:00
Peter Shaw gives us an insight into the history of the Crampton Tower Museum. A fascinating small museum is partly housed in a flint tower adjacent to the Broadstairs Railway Station. The tower formed part of the first Broadstairs public water supply and was put in repair by Thanet District Council. Thomas Russell Crampton is perhaps chiefly remembered as a designer of locomotives and of railways, but he was also concerned with gas, water works and the submarine telegraph cable. He was the first to succeed in laying an effective telegraph cable under the English Channel. Kent's History is varied and rich. Everything is here to explore, from the pre-historic right up to the tumultuous times of the 20th century. The Kent coast enjoys a fantastic heritage and the richest font of Kent History is the Isle of Thanet which is said by some to be The Birthplace of England. Crampton Tower Museum, situated in Thanet, celebrates local history with its collection of early prints and paintings. However, as Broadstairs is only a part of our glorious isle, the whole of Thanet is embraced by our team of historians. Apart from a varied collection of historical artefacts, the Museum is an effective link to other collections, history walkers and nearby sites of interest. Peter Shaw, Chairman

| Thanet Disabled Riding Centre Broadstairs with Vicky | 21 May 2026 | 00:22:01 | |
Vicky who has been at the centre for 25 years tells us about the amazing work this centre does to give anybody with a disability to ride and interact with their horses. Thanet Disabled Riding Centre is an independent, nonprofit organisation located in Broadstairs. With the fantastic support from our team of volunteers, we can cater to 40 riders a week. The Centre has now been running for 47 years and is currently home to four ponies. Three of whom are in full time work and our other one is a 34 year old, retired, tea drinking Shetland! We are a full time charity which takes £150 per day to run, so we appreciate any support we receive. Our Story TDRC was established in 1974 on a small yard in Thanet, Kent. (up until 2004 the centre was affiliated with the RDA) This was soon taken over by Nora Setterfield and Rowena Young a few months later due to a threat of the centre closing down. This led to Nora and Rowena having to find another plot of land to restart the charity. They came across a riding school called Bromstone. This allowed the centre to use the riding school ponies, they continued this set up, unfortunately, the riding school closed down a few years later. So the hunt was on to find another home. They soon found a plot of land in Fairfield. Due to a lack of stables and an influx of riders, a pony bed and breakfast was created. This is where owners would kindly allow the centre to keep their ponies every weekend, where they would be stabled and fed, in return for riding use. Nora was soon able to cut down on the amount of bed and breakfast ponies due to being donated working ponies that the centre could use. After a few months, the council decided to sell the land for development, so Nora and Rowena had to, yet again move the centre. They were lucky to have supportive councillors who waited until they were settled in a new home to sell the land. Nora and Rowena found a quiet plot of land in the grounds of Maurice house (the British Legion) in 1985. This has since become the centres permanent home. The pair had a massive task on their hands to clear the trees and level the ground to make a safe home for the centres ponies. Nora says “anyone who popped their head over the wall to be nosy, got a job. The whole community pulled together to help us get started”. Before long the centre was deemed safe for riding. With six pony-sized stables constructed, a tack room/tea room and a feed room were installed. The centre then started with only 2 ponies, Rusty and Paddy. So bed and breakfast continued until 2 more centre ponies were bought, Sunny, and Blaze. So bed and breakfast was stopped. The centres most well known possession is a 34-year-old, tea drinking devil Shetland named Smartie. Bought by the centre at age 4, she would take on a ridden career for Nora’s baby clinic on a Friday morning. Unfortunately, smartie found it more amusing to kick volunteers and watch them run away, than actually be ridden. Her favourite activity was chasing people through fences. And throwing a tantrum if she didn’t get her morning cup of tea. To make matters worse, Smartie was petrified of games so Nora broke Smartie in to drive, and she loved it! | Lisa lets us into the world of being a Postie in Broadstairs and St Peters | 15 Jun 2026 | 00:22:04
Thank you to Lisa who is one of the people who we all know and see everyday about but very rarely hear about. To learn what our local Posties do and why they love the job they do listen as Lisa tells us all about her job... and it's not just wearing shorts all year!!!! If you live between the chalk cliffs of Broadstairs and the quiet, flint-walled lanes of St Peter’s, you will know the rhythm of Lisa’s stride. While the rest of the town might be hunkering down against a North Sea gale or seeking shade under a colourful umbrella at Viking Bay, Lisa and her colleagues are on the move to deliver our post and parcels. She isn't just delivering mail she’s there throughout all the Seasons Broadstairs and St Peters are towns of moods, and Lisa sees them all before most of us have finished our first coffee or sometimes had our lunch.
More Than Just Envelopes In a world that’s increasingly digital, Lisa represents the tangible. To the residents of the Victorian terraces and the hidden bungalows, she is a constant. "It’s never just a bill or a postcard," says one resident In St Peters "It’s the nod, the 'Morning!', and the fact that she knows exactly which gate has the sticky latch." Regardless of whether the sky is a brilliant "Broadstairs Blue" or a bruised, stormy purple, Lisa remains the reliable thread connecting the town. She is the keeper of secrets in envelopes and the silent witness to the changing seasons of the Kentish coast. So, next time you hear that familiar shuffle on the doorstep while the rain lashes against the glass, know that it's just Lisa—undeterred, upbeat, and onto the next house.

| Dickens House Broadstairs with Darren Cowd | 08 Jun 2026 | 00:38:51 | |
We have to thank Darren Cowd TDC museums manager & Curator of Dickens House. Dickens House Museum celebrates Charles Dickens' long connection with Broadstairs (1837-1851). It is housed in the cottage that was Charles Dickens' inspiration for the home of Betsey Trotwood in David Copperfield. According to the reminiscences of Charles Dickens son Charley, they regularly had tea there with Miss Mary Pearson Strong, and her belief of her right to stop the passage of donkeys in front of her cottage became the donkey incident for the character of Betsey Trotwood. The parlour, described by Dickens and illustrated by Phiz, will be known to readers of David Copperfield. The cupboard in the corner may be recognised as the "press" from which Miss Betsey produced the concoctions she gave poured down the throat of young David Copperfield. Visitors to Dickens House Museum will see items that once belonged to Charles Dickens including letters written about Broadstairs, his writing box and mahogany sideboard, along with a fine collection of prints by H K Browne (Phiz), one of Dickens' principal illustrators. There are also displays of Dickensian memorabilia, Victorian costumes and Victoriana, as well as a feature on "Our English Watering Place". It was in 1851 that Charles Dickens wrote this affectionate record of the town and its inhabitants. 2026 Season: Wednesday 1st April - Sunday 1st November: Wednesday to Sunday, 1pm to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm) For more information and to book Email: museums@thanet.gov.uk

| The Dickens Festival Broadstairs with Elizabeth, Simon, Dean and Sharon | 08 Jun 2026 | 00:41:39 | |
Festival 2026 - Friday, 12th to Sunday, 14th June 2026 will be the 89th year, and we are pleased to confirm the dates for our 3-day festival. Friday, 12th to Sunday, 14th June Charles Dickens visited Broadstairs in Kent regularly from 1837 until 1859 and immortalised the town as "Our English Watering Place". In 1937, to commemorate the centenary of the author's first visit, Gladys Waterer, the then resident of Dickens House, conceived the idea of putting on a production of David Copperfield and of having people about the town in Victorian dress to publicise it. Thus the festival was born and, with the exception of the years of World War 2, has been held annually ever since. The Broadstairs Dickens Fellowship was formed the same year - 1937 and constitutionally 'requests' the festival each year.

| Broadstairs and its Community Speak | 28 May 2026 | 00:19:34 | |
This is a special edition after the events that took place over the Bank Holiday Weekend FYI some of the comments were converted but not changed from the original submitted text into the spoken word. This is confirmed during the Podcast at which point this takes place. Thank you Let's remember Broadstairs is a quintessential, charming coastal town located on the Isle of Thanet in East Kent, England. Affectionately nicknamed the "Jewel in Thanet's Crown," it beautifully preserves a nostalgic, Victorian-era seaside atmosphere while fostering a thriving contemporary food, shopping, and arts scene. Nestled between the coastal hubs of Margate and Ramsgate, the town is renowned for its spectacular chalk cliffs, a necklace of sandy bays, and strong historic ties to literary giant Charles Dickens. As we all know Broadstairs did not have such a great weekend. Families, visitors and local residents were all geared up for a fantastic weekend in the sun. The beaches were packed local restaurants, pubs and cafes were all geared up for a great time. However a very small minority were encouraged by social media as has happened before to descend on our town. But it was for all the wrong reasons. Fuelled with drink and walking our streets in beach wear and stealing from local shops they caused havoc stealing alcohol and other items and in the end forcing local business to close. But this was not just unique to Broadstairs many coastal resorts across the country suffered the same problem. So here you can listen to our local community tell you why Broadstairs is not like this all the time, it's a fantastic place to visit and enjoy. I thank you all for taking part.
| Sarah Thorne Theatre Michael Wheatley Ward | 28 May 2026 | 00:51:42 | |
From the Largest Theatre Group in the World to The Oldest Stage in England and the Future of the Theatre Michael Wheatley-Ward has had invaluable experience of the theatre management business. Here is a colourful entertainment all of its own of the risks involved in production management from the wings as well as front of house. A wealth of knowledge which has been gained through knowing and working with some leading actors, directors and producers in the theatre business over fifty years. From some of London's West End play houses, cinemas and provincial picture houses to the second oldest theatre in England, the Theatre Royal Margate. This centre was one of local controversy in 2007, which led to the creation of the Sarah Thorne Theatre in Broadstairs. Michael said: “There are several reasons why I fought to save the Sarah Thorne Theatre site in Broadstairs. For those who have read Michael Flagg’s biography of me, entitled “Surviving in the Theatre” which during Covid, Cameron Macintosh told me was a very apt title, readers will see I have spent a life in the entertainment profession. “Community theatre plays an important part in life and especially now where we need places for people to learn and develop their skills. Also in later years it offers employment and a purpose to get up in the morning which for me is another reason. Like our Patron Judi Dench says retirement is not a word in our dictionary.
| Broadstairs & St Peters Bowls Club - Ray | 25 May 2026 | 00:25:55 | |
OUR HISTORY Aspley House Bowls Club was set up by Dr Brightman (Broadstairs Council chairman) during WW1. In 1917 the rinks were laid out in his back garden, facing what is now Lawn Road. They were mainly used by returning servicemen at the end of the war. When Dan Mason gifted the Recreation Ground to the town in 1921 by way of his personal thanks to the troops, he set up a bowling green in the grounds (now the present Broadstairs & St Peters Bowls Club), closing not only his personal double bowling rink in Pierremont Park, but also the Apsley House Bowls Club. A BIG CELEBRATION In 2016 we celebrated our centenary year. To mark the occasion, we organised several exciting games and visits, one being to play the Royal Household in Windsor. It was a perfect way to mark our incredibly special year. We then played host to the Royal household in a return match and it was a wonderful day. Thinking of Joining? If you are looking for good company, gentle exercise, friendship and maybe some competition in the heart of beautiful Broadstairs, then why not come and join us at Broadstairs & St Peter's Bowls Club.
