In this episode of Broadcastability, we’re joined by Simo Vehmas, a Finnish professor of special education whose work sits at the crossroads of philosophy, disability studies, and social critique. Describing himself as an “intellectual troublemaker,” Vehmas embraces discomfort and disagreement as tools for learning, challenging both his audiences and himself to think more deeply. In this conversation, he reflects on his unconventional path into disability scholarship, sparked not by personal ties but by curiosity, and a resistance to rigid norms. Together, we dig into debates around disability language across cultures, the often-overlooked role of class and privilege in disability studies, and the limits of consensus-driven thinking. The episode also explores the social model of disability, embodiment, vulnerability, and the importance of communicating research beyond academia.

Dans cet épisode de Broadcastability, nous recevons Simo Vehmas, professeur finlandais d’éducation spécialisée dont le travail se situe au croisement de la philosophie, des études sur le handicap et de la critique sociale. Se décrivant comme un « agitateur intellectuel », Vehmas considère l’inconfort et le désaccord comme des outils d’apprentissage, mettant au défi aussi bien son public que lui-même à réfléchir en profondeur. Au fil de cette conversation, il revient sur son parcours atypique vers la recherche sur le handicap, motivé non par des liens personnels mais par la curiosité et une résistance aux normes rigides. Ensemble, nous explorons les débats autour du langage du handicap selon les cultures, le rôle souvent négligé de la classe sociale et du privilège dans les disability studies, ainsi que les limites d’une pensée fondée sur le consensus. L’épisode aborde également le modèle social du handicap, l’incarnation, la vulnérabilité et l’importance de communiquer la recherche au-delà du monde académique.

Laurent habite en Wallonie en Belgique et il a la sclérose en plaques. Durant cet épisode, Laurent raconte sa transition entre entrepreneur et enseignant, ses expériences en tant que personne handicappé que fait travail avec les grosses machines, et ses strategems pour enseigner non seulement le terrassement, mais aussi l’inclusion et l’accessibilité.

In the third episode of Broadcastability Season 2, co-hosts Chloë and Isabelle interview Matilda Feyisayo Ibini, a Nigerian-British playwright and screenwriter. In this episode, Ibini shares her advice for disabled young people who want to go into the arts industry, her ideas for making the arts more inclusive, and her understanding of how narratives shape cultural attitudes and policies - and therefore, how storytelling can be a force for positive change.   Within this framework, she articulates a pressing need to renovate the social imaginary about disability and employment: that disabled individuals can substantively contribute to their communities even though they may require personal or other supports.
