How to leverage your broadcast media network connections and thrive with Ben Anchor27 Dec 202100:20:39

So during lockdown I worked with a lifelong friend, a musician Tom Southerton who’s now based in Japan, to develop a podcast. I wanted to turn the tables and get me to talk a little bit more in depth about the importance of the broadcast network of connections.

It was great to talk with a few consultants from the Hawk network throughout the series and discover what their projects were like. As this is the broadcast network series I also liked getting guests from more obscure or leftfield areas too.

You can find out more by going to www.linkedin.com/company/ancast/ or https://www.hawkmediapartnership.com/team_member/ben-anchor/

Sneak preview Audiogram: https://share.descript.com/view/J21YyJ6ad49

During the episode we go through some talking points:

  1. How Ben has developed his broadcast network over the years
  2. How was the process authoring books in different formats
  3. What makes you happy with the work that you do and why

More from host Ben:

I have been working at the 'hard end' of broadcast independently for many years, if there's a major transformation or project needing a specialist - this is where I shine. A big fan of cloud, DevOps and agile methods - I like having enough technical grounding and balance it with communicating with people - of all levels.

It all started working in production and editing videos on a laptop to now helping deliver huge complex broadcast projects where I can turn up and not be phased by any of it - let me work with the team and get on with delivering it without supervision. You will see from my track record all of this and when you meet me I like to build up trust and demonstrate this by attention to detail, honesty and big picture mentality.

In my spare time I love culture, like to travel and explore where I can improve my photography hobby - also like to get involved in charity fundraising. If you want to reach out feel free to send me a connection here and we can talk.

Specialities - project management, business analyst, media solutions engineering, workflow specialist, technical consultant, agile, facilitation, training

Starting a broadcast consultancy firm 'Hawk Media Partnership' with Angus Blackwood20 Dec 202100:22:35

Me and Angus go way back and was one of my first senior managers I sort of got on with really, he has time for anyone and thought he would be a great guest. His expansion of Hawk has been incredible especially over the last year and fascinating to find out what’s behind it all.

It was great to find out that Angus has also spent some of his career in satellite, radio and the European space agency - giving weight to finding your ideal role!

More from guest Angus:

I founded The Hawk Media Partnership to meet the needs of broadcast and media companies looking for a one stop shop in technical consultancy.

Broadcast & media is undergoing extraordinary change. Conventional linear TV is giving way to radical new models of media delivery. New players like Netflix, Amazon and Apple are pumping millions into production and rights acquisition. DAZN is on the warpath. Will BBC Match of the Day, which began in 1964, still have an audience in 2024?

These monumental changes, coupled with intense competition for eyeballs, mean that broadcasters and their suppliers need to be able to deliver media to consumers better than ever before - faultlessly, seamlessly and efficiently.

Being an apprentice and mentoree supported me in engineering with Amber Holbrook13 Dec 202100:16:27

Through a mutual friend and someone I’d done a show with previously it was a recommendation - Amber was keen to do a show and I had a slot left.

I’d always wanted to find out what apprenticeships were like and how the mentoree support was like with Rise - Amber even recognised a few previous guests!

You can find out more by going to https://www.linkedin.com/in/amber-holbrook-721284a4/

Sneak preview Audiogram: https://share.descript.com/view/w4MtMzljoq9

During the episode we go through some talking points:

  1. Studying a higher apprenticeship with the BBC in Broadcast Engineering
  2. From 1st Line Broadcast Support Engineer for 4 years, to the most recent transition into a Proposals Engineer
  3. Working in a male dominated industry and being part of the RISE project as a mentoree

Panel talk on IBC with Paul Markham, Tony Dotchin, Jonathan Marshall and Phil Hodgetts06 Dec 202100:36:41

I’ve known most of the panel members for as long as I’ve been going to the IBC show, some as independents, some with their companies but all sharing the same camaraderie. And as were in the festive period me and some of the panel spruced up with hats and Christmas jumpers!

I wanted to host a live podcast on the eve of 'IBC 2021'. Streaming to LinkedIn which was one thing I’d always wanted to do. I'm keen to get some industry folks together and talk about the 2nd show in a row cancelled, the advent of IBC Digital and other topics related to the show.

More on our panel guests:

Paul Markham:

I've done software, hardware, infrastructure, networks, web, cloud, security, audio, video and broadcast technologies. I've managed teams, recruited teams, performance managed and handled redundancies. I took the ITIL foundation exam and got only one answer wrong. I've worked on business cases, led workshops, solved awkward problems and generally tried to bridge the gaps between technology, business and people to get to the real initiatives that can make things better.

Tony Dotchin:

Prince 2 and Agile qualified Project Manager with a proven track record of delivering complex and diverse projects.

Experienced in design and delivery of contribution events using technical and operational knowledge to create robust and innovative delivery mechanisms and operational solutions for sports broadcasting. Extensive experience on DTT and DTH platforms. Former REME avionics technician.

Jonathan Marshall

Whether in his earlier role in BBC R&D or latterly in commercial innovation, Jonathan has played a key role in the invention and dissemination of many of the interactive technologies we now take for granted - Red button TV, hybrid TV (internet + broadcast) and integration of programming with Social networks and online trends. To do so has required a leading level of creative and truly multidisciplinary understanding and vision, working with other visionaries, writers, programme makers, technologists and broadcasters. The result of his work has been to significantly extend the reach and possibility of the creative industries in both broadcast and online environments.

Phil Hodgetts:

I partner with broadcasters and telecommunications companies across Europe to scale their flexible workforce in-line with delivery needs. My role is to work closely with various client stakeholders to scope requirements of unique and complex technology programmes, understand what skills are required and deliver those skills from Caspian One's Partnered Network of Associates.

Broadcast technology projects in large and small companies with Jeremy Smith29 Nov 202100:16:14

I’d met Jeremy working on related projects in the industry, it was only after he became one of the network of Hawk consultants that I really understood what makes him tick. It was interesting to hear from someone who’s been around the block and likes the smaller broadcasters and companies now.

Who knew that Jeremy was once a TV presenter, he comes from the creative and post-production side of broadcast and now finds himself deep in the technology now.

Starting in audio before moving onto TV and different roles with Deborah Jackson08 Nov 202100:16:12

I must have known Debbie for over 20 years since our call centre job at Uni and she was doing music production and initially wanted to go in that direction. I always bump into her at trade shows and always got time for each other - so when I was looking for final guests I decided to ask her.

Was great figuring out what went on since Uni as she left in the audio direction and only just figured out how she then took the broadcast route but via the audio route in. The talk is a good eye opener into starting in a place, company or role that is far removed from what you do today.

Commercial deal negotiations with major broadcast projects with Kevin Moroney01 Nov 202100:15:57

It was through our mutual network of consultants at Hawk that I met Kevin, I wasn’t sure what his specialist expertise was - until he offered to do a guest slot. It was great as I’d never been in the commercial part of broadcast so I learnt a thing or 2 from him.

The insight Kevin gives to brinkmanship, where deals go to the wire and where both sides know they need to make a deal - it was fascinating. He also offered alternate podcasts from anything from sailing to pottery I think!

Well how do we best round off a series then to get the host interviewed instead - it was a suggestion by a business associate and long time friend Tom Southerton based in Japan. Ben

Getting your first break in TV for newcomers especially in pandemic times with Julian Dismore.17 May 202100:24:55

It was a friend of a friend who suggested the connection, I reached out to my academic circles but instead of getting the lecturer I was introduced to Julian who was a media trainer and series producer - perfect fit! What's great about the episode is Julian's producing experience (and great stories to go with it) but most of all his passion for getting newcomers onto the TV ladder and like me paying it forwards.

The 80's & 90's broadcast news journalism and moving to podcasting with Jim Herlihy.03 May 202100:18:40

Jim was one of the first responders to my podcast guest request, I was interested in the long history in broadcast journalism stretching back decades, I did have to confirm what a 'stringer' meant and of course - freelance journalist!

As Jim explains he is not a technical geek so when we got the podcast interview going he concentrated on the substance of being an independent journalist getting a news story and how he has found this new medium in podcasting.

More info on our guest Jim:

I was in the banking business and had three assignments in Ecuador, Chile and Mexico over 7 years. My business career gave me great entrée to local business, government and cultural circles that played well for my journalist sideline.

Mostly print media - Business Latin America, The Economist and The Times. But also did local reporting for the BBC in Ecuador and Chile.

Back Stateside, I used to co-host a current affairs TV show on San Francisco cable called News Europe during the 1990s.

My debut novel Deceit and Dirty Money is available in print and electronic form on Amazon.com.  An audio dramatized version entitled Dirty Money is available/downloadable from Free-ebooks.net.

Podcasting is the perfect marriage of the written and spoken word.

Politics, especially in SF and California is another side passion. I was on the State Central Cttee of the California Democratic Party for a few years. My podcast encompasses a host of subjects apart from politics but I would summarize the 98 episodes as current affairs rather than exclusively politics with a SF and California slant.

It is not a partisan podcast. I stick to factual, researched posts and I am light on opinion/editorializing. There’s enough of that all around us. My market niche is independent minded listeners who want to hear both sides of the argument with a good dose of verifiable facts. I always cite my sources at the end of the podcast.

Sound engineer to broadcast and production management roles with Stephen Furness19 Apr 202100:23:40

Before we spoke I did wonder where he was from and its the north east, his story of starting his career in an indoor market in Sunderland was a good opener, the sheer diversity of work he has been involved with is facinating to hear as his advice for new comers.

A 37 year long broadcast lighting career same trade and company with Brad Dickson.12 Apr 202100:23:48

Brad was one of my replies on LinkedIn, posted in a group for media professionals and figured lighting is another area that I'd like to talk about, after a few emails he was booked for a show, we was trying to include a demonstration but as it's more visual we had to skip it - but we talked for ages anyway.

The main thing that struck me was being in the same trade and the same company for 37 years, its inspiring to hear from people who have committed themselves that long - and all the developments of software, LED's and production shoot experiences was great.

CBC was involved in a variety of lighting advancements such as creating pre visualization software that allowed a lighting console to control the lighting in a 3D computer simulation to pre program looks for the camera. We also created a plug and play studio infrastructure that involved an installed DMX network along with DMX controlled non dim power. We created the worlds first all LED lit news studio in our French Studios in Toronto. After retiring I co created the HS Scope that provides a guideline to calibrate LED lights to the needs of the camera sensors based on the cameras actual electronics chroma signal. I now this is a podcast but I can show the software on the video interview if you would like. I have other video examples but as tis is a podcast i suspect you want it all audio focused. I was also a technical instructor at CBC along with being a Senior Lighting Director and I have been on a wide variety of industry related panels at various tradeshows. I have spoken with people looking to get in the industry in the past and I have a perspective I share with them regarding training etc. they should look to obtain.

More information on the guest:

I began my career at Caspian One in 2009, working intensely across the full broadcast chain, delivering on both contract and permanent assignments.

Initially, my focus was targeted to distribution technologies, which as result, built solid grounding for the work I do today with Telco’s in Europe - operating in-and-around video content delivery. I have also worked closely alongside equipment manufacturers, product and technical sales candidates; and it’s this breadth of experience which has developed my unusual, rounded understanding of the industry’s people, products, workflows and technologies.

I’m a tenacious individual who is proud of my work and loyal to the people I support. My strengths also include the capability to identify, access and engage with candidates that have skills which are often in high, competitive demand.

A new broadcast media graduate recalls landing your first industry job with Andy Besbrode.08 Mar 202100:18:42

This episode I wanted to find a recent broadcast media graduate, I made some contacts in London and the University I went to in Leeds and eventually I was put in contact with Andy - he said that it came at the right time as he had been back to Uni to tell other upcoming graduates of his experience getting work giving them confidence.

Being an independent producer and lecturing broadcast journalism with Michael Kosmides.01 Mar 202100:23:57

This connection came from out of nowhere really, I was talking with a friend of a friend about a potential podcast show needing guests and coincidentally he was a graduate from a broadcast journalism course and he put me in contact with Michael. After some phone calls he agreed to record one and was enthusiastic about paying it forwards to help the new wave of new comers.

It was my first time talking about journalism specifically and got a real sense of what it's like from Michael's work in the field, whilst all the time weaving advice in for new comers. Also a good talking point on social media where broadcast filters into these new platforms which become new new norm.

Hollywood shoots and talent scouting what casting directors are all about with Jaimie Beebe.25 Feb 202100:14:03

Looking through the podcasting groups I found people in broadcast media few and far between, then by luck I saw Jaimie offering to guest and the part of the industry she works in is very much near the talent - and some razzmatazz of Hollywood, so I was very happy to have her on the show.

For the online studio interview she had a black background with a boom style mic and had an audition feel to it! She gave me the inside track on dealing with actors and actresses and how they make it in the film and TV shoots and working with production crews, very insightful.

Studying broadcast to top engineering roles and professional development with Jose Otero.22 Feb 202100:22:19

I was looking for different places to find ideal guests and I wanted someone who worked in a technical capacity this time so I thought let's try LinkedIn groups and Jose was keen so over the festive period we recorded the show - we had to reschedule on the same day due to time differences but we got there in the end.

It was a great to understand how Jose got where he is now and a lot of the work he does I can relate to so found it fascinating how he started in sound and with drive and passion managed to make it to the heights of broadcast in another country.

Supervised Learning for FAST Channels: AI to Real Revenue25 Nov 202500:14:41

FAST channels are growing at fifty-three percent year-on-year. 📈 But here's the problem: they're running web-style business models on nineteen-nineties operations. And it's costing you millions.

While everyone's obsessing over ChatGPT in the newsroom, the real opportunity in broadcast is sitting right in front of you—unseen and untapped.

🎯 WHAT YOU'LL DISCOVER:

💸 The revenue gap: Why FAST channels with CPM-based advertising can't compete when they're scheduling seven days in advance

🤖 Why ChatGPT won't help: The difference between generative AI and the predictive data science that actually drives broadcast revenue

📊 What nowcasting actually is: Using live signals (Google Trends, weather, social sentiment, BARB ratings, streaming logs) to predict audience engagement in real-time

⏱️ How it works in practice: The three-month proof of concept that could unlock 3-5% annual revenue improvement

💹 The numbers that matter: Reducing prediction error from 20% down to 10% (MAPE), translating to better content placement, higher CPM retention, fewer advertiser disappointments

🚀 Why this is happening now: The technology is mature. The data exists. The business case is clear. Only question: first-mover or follower?

🎙️ BEN & RAIANA EXPLORE:✓ Why FAST is the perfect entry point (not traditional linear TV)✓ The partnership approach: broadcast expertise plus data science✓ How editorial control stays with YOUR team✓ Success metrics: confidence scoring, override processes, model health✓ The three-month structure: clear deliverables, clear exit criteria✓ Why first-movers always win broadcast transformation

The future of broadcast scheduling isn't about creativity—it's about data. Organizations that move first will capture millions in recovered revenue before competitors even realize the opportunity exists.

This is the conversation about AI in broadcast that actually matters.

If you're running FAST channels and this resonates, let's talk.
