S15E01 | Steven Donaldson (Kirriemuir, Angus, 2018)04 Sep 202400:42:44
Steven Donaldson was the kind of person everyone needs in their life - selfless, thoughtful, kind, and always bringing a smile to the faces of those around him. In June 2018, however, a twisted and sadistic plot to take his life was set in motion by the one person he trusted the most - his girlfriend. With the help of two local brutes, she lured Steven to a park where a vicious assault began. But the horror didn’t end there. This is truly one of the most disturbing and heartbreaking cases I’ve ever researched. British Murders Unsolved | Episode 2: Eve Stratford and Lynne Weedon (Leytonstone, East London and Hounslow, West London, 1975)28 Aug 202400:55:05
Eve Stratford seemed to have it all - a promising modelling career, a rock star boyfriend, and a future full of possibilities. But on a cold March day in 1975, her life was brutally cut short when an unknown attacker took everything from her in her own home. Just six months later, 16-year-old Lynne Weedon, rushing to beat curfew after a night with friends, took a fateful shortcut through a dark alley. She never made it home. Ambushed, assaulted, and left for dead, her case has remained unsolved for decades. For nearly 30 years, these two horrific crimes remained unconnected, until a revolutionary DNA discovery in 2004 linked their fates. Their killer is still at large, and the mystery remains, but one undeniable truth binds them together in a way neither could have imagined. If you have any information about either of these cases, please contact Crimestoppers anonymously by phoning 0800 555 111 or via their website at crimestoppers-uk.org. In this episode, I tell the story of Nicola Edgington, Marion Edgington and Sally Hodkin. On November 4, 2005, 25-year-old Nicola Edgington stabbed her 60-year-old mum Marion to death. After pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility in October 2006, Nicola was detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. In September 2009, Nicola was discharged to a housing association self-contained flat. On October 10, 2011, Nicola repeatedly spoke with emergency services personnel in an attempt to get herself sectioned. She then stole a knife from a butcher's shop and stabbed and killed 58-year-old Sally Hodkin, whom Nicola had chosen to attack randomly. Judge Brian Barker handed Nicola Edgington a life sentence with a minimum term of 37 years on March 4, 2013. Len Hodkin, Sally's son, is the chairperson of the UK charity Hundred Families. Interview #30 | Sally-Anne Martyn (Author)30 Apr 202300:38:10
I welcome author Sally-Anne Martyn to the show in this interview episode.⁣ Sally-Anne grew up in a small village just outside Sheffield and comes from a working-class background. Her writing is inspired by those women who are constantly left on the sidelines and ignored. Sally-Anne takes the underdog, allows her the freedom to do what she wants (good or bad) and sees where it takes her. With a diet of 'Hammer House' and 'Tales of the Unexpected' as a child, along with a love for the ridiculous, it is no surprise that her books have chilling themes with a hint of dark humour. In this episode, I tell the story of Albert Dryden and Harry Collinson. In 1988, Albert Dryden built a sunken bungalow on his land without planning permission. Over the next three years, he had a constant back-and-forth battle with Derwentside District Council, who demanded he demolish the bungalow. Confronting the councilman with a gun, Albert shot and killed Harry in an incident captured by TV news cameras. Larry Gene Bell | The Murders of Shari Smith and Debra Helmick | Feat. Bobbie Holmes29 Mar 202300:38:20
In this off-season episode, I'm joined by Bobbie Holmes of Killer Stories, who tells me (and you) the story of American double murderer Larry Gene Bell. Larry Gene Bell kidnapped 17-year-old Shari Smith on May 31, 1985, and murdered her shortly after. He then taunted Shari's family by making several phone calls and forcing Shari to write them a letter before she was killed. A couple of weeks later, Larry kidnapped 9-year-old Debra Helmick and murdered her in a similar fashion. Once more, he taunted Shari's family after doing so. After his arrest on June 27, 1985, Larry Gene Bell was given the death penalty. He chose the electric chair over lethal injection and was finally executed on October 4, 1996. Interview #26 | Danni Brooke (Former Undercover Cop)13 Mar 202300:46:07
I welcome former undercover cop Danni Brooke to the show in this interview episode.⁣ For over a decade, Danni was one of the most effective female undercover cops in the UK, one of a minimal number of women in the Met’s elite unit. She was so successful at taking down criminals that she was seconded to forces around the country. Whether infiltrating organized crime gangs or disrupting drug supply lines, Danni played the innocent Essex girl, fooling even the most suspicious villains, using her quick wits to keep her out of trouble. She loved the job, but the pressures of her work and trying to balance the long hours with being a mother, were to take a toll on her personal life. Now retired as a police officer, Danni has enjoyed a successful television career and is booked as a keynote speaker for various corporate events. Danni is also famed for her role as a Hunter on 'Hunted' and 'Celebrity Hunted' for Channel 4. In her memoir, 'The Girl for the Job', Danni reveals why she left the police, how she found a new career (and love) on C4’s 'Hunted', and why the thrill of covert work still pulls her into private investigations. S08E10 | Christopher Halliwell | The Murders of Becky Godden-Edwards and Sian O'Callaghan09 Mar 202300:47:52
In this episode, I tell the stories of Christopher Halliwell, Becky Godden-Edwards and Sian O'Callaghan. In March 2011, Halliwell murdered Sian after picking her up in his taxi after she left a Swindon nightclub. He was handed a life sentence with a 25-year minimum for Sian's murder in October 2012. This case is controversial because Halliwell revealed the location of another woman he'd killed, Becky Godden-Edwards, at the same time he revealed the location of Sian's body. Due to PACE being breached by DS Steve Fulcher, Becky's murder wasn't part of the October 2012 trial. Halliwell wouldn't be found guilty of Becky's murder until September 2016, after which he was handed a whole life order. She then removed her mum's head using scissors and knives before later removing her brain. After the murder, Odessa Jnr carried her mum's decapitated head around in a plastic carrier bag and reportedly kissed it on the forehead in front of a family friend. S08E07 | Damian Rzeszowski | The Murders of Marek Gartska, Izabela, Kinga & Kacper Rzeszowski and Marta & Julia de la Haye16 Feb 202300:26:56
I tell the story of Damian Rzeszowski and his family in this episode. On August 14, 2011, Damian and his wife Izabela returned from a couple's trip to their native Poland. Later that day, the family planned on hosting a barbecue. After being berated by Izabela for leaving the kids alone in the house whilst she went to collect her friend, Damian snapped. He grabbed two kitchen knives and, within the space of 15 minutes, murdered Izabela, Marek Gartska, his father-in-law, Kinga and Kacper, his two children, and Marta and Julia de la Haye, Izabela's friend and her daughter. Damian then turned the knife on himself but survived his self-inflicted injuries. Judge Michael Birt handed Damian six concurrent 30-year sentences on October 29, 2012, after he was found guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility. Damian Rzeszowski took his own life at HMP Full Sutton on March 31, 2018. ⁣⁣For all things British Murders, please visit my website:⁣ https://www.britishmurders.com/⁣ Intro music:⁣ David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet'⁣ https://linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusic⁣ References:⁣ www.britishmurders.com/damianrzeszowski/ Learn more about your ad choices. I tell the story of Kenneth Bill and John Hay in this episode. On March 15, 2012, Kenneth lured John to his unit at Meltham Mills Industrial Estate on the pretence of him pricing up some building work. Once there, Kenneth beat John to death inside the unit, burned his body and disposed of the ashes at a local recycling centre. S08E04 | Gordon Park | The Murder of Carol Park26 Jan 202300:40:20
In this episode, I tell the story of Gordon and Carol Park. In July 1976, Gordon Park returned to his Leece home from a family trip to Blackpool with his three children to discover that his wife, Carol, was missing. In August 1997, 21 years after she went missing, Carol Park's body was found by amateur divers in Coniston Water, a lake in the Lake District. Gordon was arrested on suspicion of Carol's murder in that same month, but the charges were later dropped. However, he was re-arrested in January 2004 and found guilty of Carol's murder in January 2005. In 2010, on his 66th birthday, Gordon Park took his own life. A posthumous appeal of his conviction was referred to the Court of Appeal in October 2018, but it was dismissed in May 2020. The Hijacking of EgyptAir Flight 648 | Feat. Grace Cordell from REDRUM and HUMANS29 Dec 202200:28:55
In this off-season episode, I'm joined by Grace Cordell of REDRUM and HUMANS, who will tell me (and you) the story of the hijacking of EgyptAir Flight 648. On November 23, 1985, a Boeing 737-200 airliner was hijacked on its Athens-to-Cairo route by three terrorists - Salem Chakore, Omar Rezaq and Nar Al-Din Bou Said. The plane was forced to land at Luqa Airport in Malta due to serious pressurization problems and dangerously low fuel levels. A subsequent raid on the aircraft by Egyptian troops killed 56 of the 86 passengers, 2 of the 3 hijackers and 2 of the 6 crew members. Until 9/11, the hijacking of EgyptAir Flight 648 was considered the most infamous in aviation history. Jelka Pesic, Milan Nenadic and David Segoviano | The Murder of Alexandra Pesic | Feat. Bobbie Holmes22 Dec 202200:41:39
In the sixth volume of Killer British Murder Stories, Bobbie Holmes of Killer Stories tells me the story of Alexandra Pesic's murder. Former beauty queen and dental assistant Alexandra met a fellow Yugoslavian woman named Jelka Pesic whilst attending an open house with her mum in Vancouver, Canada. Alexandra was soon introduced to Jelka's son, Joe, and the pair went on to marry. Jelka was an overbearing "monster-in-law", making life extremely difficult for Alexandra. Finally, things got so bad that Alexandra divorced Joe and was granted custody of their son, Brandon. Inspired by the plot of a true crime book focusing on the murder case of Cindy James, Jelka planned the murder of Alexandra with the help of hitmen Milan Nenadic and David Segoviano. Jelka, Milan and David all received life sentences for Alenxadra's murder, which equates to 25 years in Canada. Harold Shipman | Dr Death | Part 2 | The Murders15 Dec 202200:51:07
In the season 7 special, I tell the story of Dr Harold Shipman, dubbed by the media as "Dr Death". Shipman was arrested on September 7, 1998, after police raided his home. The body of Kathleen Grundy, one of Shipman's former patients, was exhumed and examined after her daughter deemed it suspicious that her mother's will excluded her children but left a large sum to Shipman. Kathleen's body was found to contain traces of diamorphine, which contradicted her death being the result of old age as stated on her death certificate written by, you guessed it, Dr Harold Shipman. In total, Shipman was convicted of murdering 15 people, but the frightening reality is that his victim count is thought to be more than 250. In the first episode of this two-part special, I discussed Shipman's early life and background, his journey to becoming a GP with his own practice and what is thought to be his first-ever murder. ⁣ This week, I'll discuss the murders he was convicted of, the trial and its aftermath. ⁣⁣For all things British Murders, please visit my website:⁣ https://www.britishmurders.com/⁣ Intro music:⁣ David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet'⁣ https://linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusic⁣ My recording equipment:⁣ Shure SM7B Vocal Microphone Cloud Microphone Cloudlifter CL1 Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface Rode PSA-1 Professional Studio Boom Arm Recorded and Edited in:⁣ Hindenberg PRO References:⁣ www.britishmurders.com/haroldshipmanpart2/ Learn more about your ad choices. S07E08 | Luke Mitchell | The Murder of Jodi Jones17 Nov 202200:40:28
In the eighth episode of season 7, I tell the story of Luke Mitchell and Jodi Jones. This incredibly divisive case began on June 30, 2003, when 14-year-old Jodi Jones was brutally murdered on an isolated footpath in Dalkeith, Scotland. Fellow 14-year-old Luke Mitchell, Jodi's boyfriend, was the one who found her body, and the police treated him as their key suspect from the very beginning. On February 11, 2005, Luke was found guilty of murdering Jodi and handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 20 years. Luke has continued to proclaim his innocence and insists that someone else was responsible for murdering Jodi. Those on Luke's side have praised a recent Channel 5 documentary focusing on the case, but those who believe he is guilty have criticised it for being too heavily biased and for omitting key evidence. ⁣⁣For all things British Murders, please visit my website:⁣ https://www.britishmurders.com/⁣ Intro music:⁣ David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet'⁣ https://linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusic⁣ My recording equipment:⁣ Shure SM7B Vocal Microphone Cloud Microphone Cloudlifter CL1 Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface Rode PSA-1 Professional Studio Boom Arm Recorded and Edited in:⁣ Hindenberg PRO References:⁣ www.britishmurders.com/lukemitchell/ Learn more about your ad choices. Neighbours assumed the couple had divorced, but the truth would come to light 18 years later. Less than a month after Ann succumbed to brain cancer in October 2015, the body of her husband, John, was found in her garden.
