| 100 Years of Route 66, and the Top 5 Cars to Drive It In | 15 oct. 2026 | 01:14:10 | |
Alex and Randy, fresh off our recent gathering and film screening of the forthcoming documentary series Route 66: The Main Street of America in Flagstaff, Arizona, discuss Randy's father-daughter trip from Riverside to Flagstaff in his red Chrysler 300B; learning the Chuck Berry version of Get Your Kicks on Route 66 backward and forward; swimming against the stream on the notoriously east-to-west road; the first post-prohibition liquor license in Chicago; the captivating documentary and the great, historic Orpheum Theater in which we got to see it; giving cars a reason to live; the temptation of the vintage motel and gas station business; love for the desert Googie diner; a brief "stroad" explainer; teaching kids patience and flexibility on the road; and that most elusive and necessary part of any good road trip: time. They move on to a game of picking their top five ideal cars to do the whole route in, along the way discussing aesthetic over speed; candidates from a stakebed farm truck to a Duesenberg; if one could make the drive appropriately in a non-American car; whether a convertible is really a good idea; a Swiss tourist who had Randy pegged within seconds; and specific instances in which roll-up windows prove important. What are your top five rides for the Mother Road? Follow along! | Special Episode: How the 986 Boxster Saved Porsche – with Alex Porter from BaT | 08 oct. 2026 | 01:07:01
This week, we have something a bit different for you: a guest episode from our esteemed partners and pals over at The Intercooler Magazine in the UK. Episode 334 of The Intercooler Podcast was recorded this past Sunday at the final Bicester Scramble of 2026, during which BaT took over the massive Hangar 113 with the help of our Local Partners Sports Purpose and Chase Classics. Alex Porter, your regular BaT podcast host, joined Andrew Frankel and Gez Medinger in front of a live audience to talk about what made Alex happy this week (spoiler: it's his recent mastery of the British roundabout), play a Porsche-themed version of their popular Buy, Borrow, Burn segment, and reveal the Bring a Trailer Car of the Week. The latter leads into a discussion about the context for and reception of the first-generation Boxster, one of the unsung (at least less-sung) heroes of the modern Porsche era. They then cover the early history of BaT, which is less familiar to our friends in the UK than to our US community; the similarities between US and UK car culture; and a frank overview of not only how, but why BaT works as well as it does.
| “Is it Real?” (Pt. 2) | 01 oct. 2026 | 01:07:25 | |
Alex, Tyler and Beck welcome first-timer Christian, the head of our Customer Service team and one of the people at BaT who is most observant of the human personality (even if he can't ever remember the customer service number, which is 415-787-0961 for anyone looking). Christian gives a quick description of the Customer Service landscape before the crew get down to a couple vintage Questions of the Week, covering phantom old car sounds; a seized Alfa V6; the automotive form of ignorance=bliss; a sudden nosedive in a '90s Honda; why they tell you to check your torque settings after 500 miles; stuck-open throttles; cars that left big impressions; and what model year they'd choose to get stuck with forever. The group then moves on to the somewhat more intense subject of where modern internet freakout culture and confirmation bias collide with conspicuous wealth and discomfort with change, most commonly exemplified by something along the lines of "There's no way that [insert an auction result you don't like or understand here] is real!" Our wise and experienced staffers, who are closer to the realities of the car auction market than anyone, offer up the reasons that yes—it is real. Follow along! | Bruce Trenery on 50 Years of Fantasy Junction | 24 sept. 2026 | 00:54:05
Randy interviews none other than Bruce Trenery, founder of the famed collector car dealership Fantasy Junction in Emeryville, California. They talk about growing up in the Berkeley hills, littered with the discarded but interesting cars of avid travelers; opening the first version of the shop with a partner in Berkeley before taking it solo in 1978; buying an all-star collection in 1982 and just about breaking even; how the fickle Euro impacts the company's overseas business; Bruce's appreciation for Bring a Trailer and specifically the expert commentary; Aurelias growing on trees; and how his son Spencer, a big name in his own right, grew up at the dealership and only occasionally torpedoed sales as a toddler. In his trademark quiet and humble way, Bruce drops bombs about driving a vintage Bentley across Europe with no preparation during the Chernobyl disaster, running the Mille Miglia in six spectacular cars, buying a Horch from Robin Hood, and purchasing a Delahaye from a Texas palm reader with good advice about airplanes. He talks about the infamous FJ photo wall, gives sage words about honesty in the car business and how nice a car it truly makes sense to own, makes a tongue-in-cheek (or is it?) prediction regarding the '34 Packard, and describes a harrowing attempt at La Carrera Panamericana in a Hudson. | Great British Cars | 17 sept. 2026 | 01:01:43
Randy, Alex, and Beck attempt to talk about British cars. Instead, they cover vigilante gardening; the new Grand Tour; getting to know The Intercooler; an oddly aggressive door handle issue; a very hard-working girlfriend; terrifying death traps; and R. Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion three-wheeler at the National Automobile Museum. But there's room for the Brits yet! The trio go on to discuss Allard vs. Healey Silverstone; BaT's overall favorite Bugeye; which carmakers are actually still British; love for '90s Land Rovers; sailing an M100 Elan into a cow pasture; what car traits and accomplishments are the most quintessentially British; the best car to stick a Buick/Rover V8 into; a philosophical question about the TR7 and TR8; an uninformed question about the Lotus Esprit V8; our upcoming appearance in Hangar 113 at the Bicester Scramble on October 4; and their favorite Brit car listings ever on BaT. | Andrew Frankel of The Intercooler—BaT's Newest Partner in the UK! | 10 sept. 2026 | 00:40:53
This week, Randy welcomes Andrew Frankel, renowned automotive journalist and founder of The Intercooler Car Magazine—BaT's newest partner in the UK. They talk about the beginnings of the magazine during the pandemic; its expansion into a podcast and YouTube channel; their recent event, termed "a concours for cars that get used"; the world's highest-mileage Carrera GT; a shared ethos of "interest in everything" and gaining credibility for the right reasons; the superhero motoring journalists who inspired Andrew; and the idea of using journalism on Instagram. As one might expect for a man of his background, Mr. Frankel arrives with a healthy collection of great stories. He tells Randy about using editorial privilege to test old racing cars, recounts his experience driving a 1970 Porsche 917K in the late 1990s, and describes ghostwriting for (and racing against!) his good friend Stirling Moss. Frankel wraps things up by determining the "Peak Car" era, ruminating on the dangers of downforce, putting forth the single most important metric of motor racing, and appreciating the privilege of working only with people one chooses. | Cruise Control and Questions of the Week | 03 sept. 2026 | 00:58:26
Alex and Beck discuss the sudden dissolution of Alex's car cred, the joy of automatic distance control, and some bad habits of highway travel; the CyberCab versus the Volkswagen XL1; why EV companies don't compete in racing series; the downside of a cohesive design language across all models from a brand; a lovely picture of vacationing with children; and "feeling poor" in a Ferrari on the Monterey Peninsula. They move on to answering some Questions of the Week from the popular series in BaT Features, in which they cover such disparate subjects as Inspector Gadget, the Ninja Turtles, and Tail Spin; forced tension on movie characters; a double-wing F40 amongst the Prii; ways to improve a Delorean; tow trucks as bodyguards; Cord pipes, SVO Mustangs, and Autozams; a genius idea for new YouTube content; middle-aged men with nothing better to do; merit badges; a dad's requirement to click tongs; and Tom Sawyering Boy Scouts into maintaining your car. | (B)at the Movies: Ford v Ferrari (2019) | 27 août 2026 | 01:11:45
Let's get this out of the way: we love this movie, car-guy-detail-nerd complaints or no, and it remains the only film we've ever taken the entire BaT HQ staff to. In this latest installment of (B)at the Movies, we talk about the problem with Cobras; balancing historical accuracy with crowd appeal and ticket sales; a great way to put Boy Scouts to sleep (or apparently, inspired vocal patriotism); the iconic opening scenes of the movie, from Ken Miles' mechanic shop to the production floor at Ford to the paddock at Willow Springs; the dumb downshifts and sudden discovery of extra room under the right foot required in every racing movie; admiration for the charming leads and for Tracy Letts, the character actor playing The Deuce; evil composite characters; 17" wheels that almost ruin everything; doing 218 on the Mulsanne Straight; the sad folder situation at modern-day Ford; teaching the young about Ken Miles; and finally, the movie's ranking in the pantheon of racing films. What details did we miss? What performances did we sail past without so much as a nod? What was going on with that 356, anyway? Tell us in the comments below! Follow along! This is an encore presentation of our popular episode from October 16, 2025. Alex has a lively interview with none other than Donald Osborne (@zagato67 on BaT): ASA accredited senior appraiser, TV personality, principal of Automotive Valuation Services, and consulting director for the Audrain Automobile Museum. They talk about BaT's start as an amalgamation of interesting POSes; maximum impact for minimal outlay; the similarities between a car for sale and the ideal political candidacy; sage advice for sellers on BaT and elsewhere; the art of self-editing; the right price for the wrong car; multitasking, the car guy way; ignoring one's own hard-earned advice; cars as an investment in happiness; driving Derek Drinkwater's Le Monstre replica at Goodwood; and adventures in Sicily on the old Targa Florio route. | Motorsports Mavericks with George Levy | 13 août 2026 | 00:39:08
This week, Alex welcomes perennial favorite (and recently retired) guest George Levy back to the show to talk about his new book, Motorsports Mavericks, on which he partnered with his dear friend, the late Pete Biro–photographer, editor, and magician extraordinaire. The book focuses on the personalities and world of motor racing in the 1960s, so George and Alex have plenty to talk about. The pair cover being in that special "someplace else" as a race photographer; the bygone decathletes of motor racing; the effect of dropping Biro's name, whether at the track or the Magic Castle; the importance of the human connection in motorsports; shooting mere inches from race cars at full chat; pulling the tablecloth trick for Bruce McLaren; the humanity of Dan Gurney; mining oral history instead of "writing the third book"; the personal cost of losing drivers and friends to the cruel sport; and money, fame, and girls for John Morton. George encourages patronizing your local enthusiast bookstore, should you be lucky enough to have one nearby. And if you're really lucky, you can find him at these upcoming signings—he promises a signed copy is only worth 20% less than a regular one! | Rising Tides, F1, Semi-Pros, Nerds in Training | 30 juil. 2026 | 00:56:17
This week, Alex and Beck make excuses; speak out of their rear ends; contemplate "two for twice the price"; share the joys of a race track at dawn; decide whether drag racing is an "event phenomenon"; think screaming matches are the best part of F1, which has a multitude of non-best parts; drop some dated (and sadly inaccurate) LeBron theory; and opine on the true marker of middle age. They then embark on an extended conversation about sub-professional sports teams, ruminate on the news from Goodwood, discover the potential benefits of wearing BaT gear in public, talk about what constitutes rarity (with, admittedly, some stretching of numbers to make a point), go boar hunting with machine guns, train a wunderkind to be an insufferable car nerd, and, naturally, discuss their favorite license plates. | How We Really Keep it Running | 23 juil. 2026 | 00:46:16
This week, Alex and Tyler are joined for the first time by Emily, BaT's treasured and stalwart Operations Manager, to talk about what it's like to be on the fringes of car enthusiasm while working with a staff full of blustery, car-obsessed nerds. They talk about being the bridge between a major corporation and the rogues gallery that is BaT HQ in San Francisco; her first memorable event experiences in Monterey, and more recent ones; Alex's 308 GTB vs Randy's Turbo 2; a great new merch idea (and a call for suggestions); office therapy; Spotted Cow and fried cheese curds; the prospects of driving a Cord and a Willys coupe to Flagstaff; and Retromobile vs the World Cup. Also covered: going to a bar and screaming, the world-healing power of ranch dressing, the team's recent watchlist favorites, uncertainty about a self-propelled house, an unavoidable Elan/Elite deep dive, Tyler's unpopular automotive opinions, Em's quintessential '90s VW first-car experience, various permutations of the New Beetle, and the cars that first spoke to us in media or sense memory. | The McQueen Classics Interview | 16 juil. 2026 | 00:53:15
This week, Alex interviews none other than Peter Guida of @mcqueens, one of BaT's most beloved and fastest-growing Local Partners and the host of our recent Meet-Up in lovely Lewes, Delaware. The gregarious Guida talks about how he got into cars due to his dad's decades at NASA; the Maryland and SoCal hot rod subcultures; getting shot down on his first approach to BaT; the origins of the McQueen name and logo; being paid to roll back speedometers (in the '80s, don't worry!); and using similar experiences from the bad old days to run things utterly by the book in modern times. Peter also explains his unique strategies to deliver on BaT given his ever-increasing volume of listings, gets deep into the intricacies of the Delaware title system, talks up his idea for the next big thing at BaT, and regales with the various facts he uses to pitch his clientele on the BaT experience.

This week Alex, Tyler, and Beck review our latest milestone sale, the gorgeous Ferrari 288 GTO that was BaT Auctions lot #250,000. They talk about whether there's a logical value cap on BaT; the different ways that our promotion hits vs. the traditional methods for very expensive cars, and the massive difference in audience size; why it doesn't matter if two amazing cars close at the same time; the modern trend of "reimagined" classics; and how old a car needs to be for a quality Route 66 trip. The trio also express Duchov luv, have a very California discussion of cross-country routes, recount a Taken-style house move, marvel at the depreciation curves for modern high-dollar offerings, dive into BaT model pages, and make a promise they can't keep. | Big Milestones, Big Bikes, and a Big Trip to Goodwood | 02 juil. 2026 | 00:57:17
This week Alex and Tyler embark on a quick rehash of the reaction to our last (B)at the Movies episode; reminisce about the days when you could still wrap your mind around the Star Wars universe; discover Tyler's Corvette origin story (and possibly that of the frame-swapped C2); reveal the BaT staff habit of taking conference calls in various cars parked downstairs at HQ; fuel ethanol-based paranoia; and compare the lot numbers (beat #818 - Ed.) when they started at BaT to the 250,000 we've now surpassed. That of course lends itself to a discussion of the Ferrari 288 GTOthat is set to wrap up next week, one that includes Tyler casually dropping yet another surprise ride-along story. Moving on to the bikes: the pair discuss the preponderance of cool two-wheelers in Europe and several great recent moto sales on BaT, both in the US and abroad, including a host of Vincents and a special Indian. They take a not-unexpected digression into Steve McQueen territory, pause for a Harley revelation, and finally, spend a few minutes talking about Alex's recent impromptu trip to the UK to spend some time on track at Goodwood. | The One-Year Garage: 1967 (Revisited) | 25 juin 2026 | 00:47:31
For episode 182, we go back nearly two years for an encore presentation of our very first One-Year Garage game. These episodes have been very popular since, and we'll have a fresh one coming up soon! Alex, Randy, and Zac Try a New Thing: game time! The One-Year Garage requires them to pick one car from a certain model year for each of five categories: Sports Car, Family Hauler, Truck/4x4, Daily Driver, and Wild Card. They make up the rules as they go, and along the way discuss local trivia about The Graduate; a two-tone requirement for Randy's future car collection; whether it's necessary to remember the names of one's offspring; dieting to fit in your diminutive daily driver; a little-known fact about the '67 Mustang; an episode-long argument [you're both right! -Ed.]; a heated debate about what constitutes a sports car [you're all right! -Ed.]; how said definition relates to the owner's heart health; and the undying question, "how wild is wild?" We want to know: What five cars are on your list? Why are our picks stupid? What did we forget about in our race to pick perfection? Let us know in the comments! Follow along! | B(aT) the Movies: Gone in 60 Seconds (1974 and 2000) | 18 juin 2026 | 01:31:41
This week we have a full house for our next movie installment: Beck, Tyler, and Cam join Alex to talk about the joys and pains of 2000's Nic Cage vehicle Gone in 60 Seconds, and the 1974 cult film of the same name that loosely inspired it. The crew discuss how each of them came to the movie (or both, as the case may be); expose their divides of opinion early; wantonly throw around the term "masterpiece"; marvel at the huge budget divide between the old and new films, just one of the many massive differences; lament the painfully cringey car dialogue; discuss fair payment for a job done; differentiate between "nighttime" and "hot time"; and confess to some Eleanor-based confusion. And then, on to the cars. What perspective has 26 years of hindsight given us on which cars got boosted and which didn't? How was no one worried about security in a circa-2000 Ferrari warehouse? Where does the modern move sit in the pantheon of films involving car chases in the LA River. Exactly how bad was CGI in 2000? Our rowdy group of cig-rippin' drug-thievin' miscreants closes by talking about Angelina's hair, other elements that don't hold up, and some of their favorite cars in both movies. | Rob Fisher of the Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance | 11 juin 2026 | 01:01:28
This week Randy hosts Rob Fisher (@Acecaracer on BaT), chairman of the foundation behind the Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance, who claims the mantle of longest continually running concours in the world. BaT will be sponsoring and joining the 70th annual running of this three-day event, culminating June 28 at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Burlingame. Discount alert! The first 200 people to buy their tickets for Sunday, June 28 on the Hillsborough Concours website using the code BAT26 get $10 off the ticket price! Randy and Rob talk about having a 250 GTO and a Wienermobile in the same show; the Concours' all-volunteer organization; featuring the hundredth anniversary of Mercedes-Benz with a 1939 540K Special Roadster from the Keller Collection; the increased difficulties in getting pre-war halo cars to a venue; the charities that benefit from the proceeds of the event; the origins of the show as a community gathering with guests like Bing Crosby and Abigail van Buren; the turmoil of big changes in 2009, and the evolution since. They leave time to talk about Rob's discovery of BaT, some of the cars he's bought and sold here, and transporting important cars to Moscone Center through San Francisco's less-than-stellar neighborhoods in the wee hours. | Cunningham Tears, Heavy Breathing, and Box Flares | 04 juin 2026 | 00:46:31
This week Alex and Randy go over all their recent favorites from the site, talking along the way about a heavy-breathing Fairlane, the terrible-or-terrific teals of the early '90s, a bullet-riddled Jeep, a raft of special Z-cars, and one of our favorite sellers. They take a lengthy detour into oddball induction setups before returning to the special Cunningham race car on the site, which prompts memories of Alex's traumatic childhood visit to The Briggs Cunningham Automotive Museum. Next, assumed clone status; missing a Rallye in Tahoe; a brief review of '80s box flares, followed by an about-face to perhaps the curviest car ever made; a solid parking lot scene on taco night; fulfilling a 60-year dream for Alex's dad; a visit to Charlie Goodman's place; Randy's upcoming pod episode with Rob Fisher ahead of our appearance at the Hillsborough Concours, the longest-running event of its kind in California; our July gathering at the Rose Cup at PIR (also the location of the first-ever BaT event); and this summer's BaT sponsorship of the vintage weekend festivities in Elkhart Lake. | An American at Monza, a Collection of Collections, and Wicked Snails | 21 mai 2026 | 00:58:33
This week, Alex and Beck grill Randy about his recent trip to Europe, which entailed among other treats watching a BaT alumni 993 GT2 ripping it up at Monza; ripping it up himself in a Falcon on the track, on the Autostrada, and all over Europe; experiencing general Falcon love across the pond; and wishing he'd brought a bigger suitcase. The trio talk about the recent increase in BaT inventory in the EU, including skinny Porsches and perhaps the ultimate E36 Touring; how to pronounce "959" (hint: it sounds much like "wow!"); comment melees of yore; a host of recent collections on BaT; the best GTO; aspiring to 20-car Fox-body ownership; 356 price drops and Shelby price creep; driving into the sunset on Route 66; a Nomad kind of blue; some stellar recent sales; the downside of our company's name; a semi-sheepish (and obvious to anyone who speaks with him routinely) admission from Randy; and extremely fast snail with an Audi wrapped around it. | Genuine Certified Predetermined Collectibles, Theoretical Rallies | 14 mai 2026 | 00:55:27
This week, Alex and Beck open with bathroom strategies for New Mexico's Philmont Scout Ranch, and then discuss long movies that are off-limits due to parenthood; how the GT350 really gots is name; Colin Comer, Howard Pardee, and the other special go-to guys for specific car models; the seedier habits of owners looking for car certification; why recent photos are the end-all, be-all for "correctness"; and when Shelby may have signed his own car. The pair move on to talk about their watchlists, in the process covering some great muscle on BaT, a refreshingly clean Porsche, and predetermined collectibility. They also touch on what prompts conservation in general, lament today's commitment levels for cross-country driving, expand on the idea of the Drum Brake Rally, and hint at a new kind of BaT event to come later in 2026. | Scramble! Cal Mille! Unlikely Chop Tops! | 07 mai 2026 | 00:50:05
This week Alex is joined by Randy and the elusive, bi-coastal Howard to talk about exciting times for Central California Porschephiles, whether stock colors are now more interesting than PTS, and Enzo vs. 288 GTO. They relive the recent Cold Start event in San Francisco before settling into a detailed breakdown of our recent experience at the Bicester Scramble in the UK, including the joys of the British event car park and the incredible Bicester Motion facility, a historic RAF base that was restored as a collection of automotive-themed businesses. They pause to give respect to the folks pedaling vintage Jags at the Goodwood Members' Meeting, then Howard describes driving the family's Zagato-bodied Alfa as one of the long list of impressive entries in the four-day, thousand-mile Cal Mille. Finally, they talk about the need for "difficult" marque experts on BaT and move on to their favorite recent listings on the site, a suddenly topless Lamborghini, a tempting call to co-drive at the NORRA, appreciation for the resuscitated Mint 400, burly first-gen T-birds, and a pressing mystery surrounding a missing wheel lock key. This week Alex and Beck jump right in with nothing much on the agenda, but overcome that hurdle to cover how the LFA has evolved in the market; peeling out and peeling tires; waterborne Lambos; viewers vs. watchers; a study in twins; sedentary Hondas; two very different takes on the modern dealer experience; whether a GT350 is truly necessary; the Mount Rushmore of "is it real?"; a practical argument against divorce; a practical argument for driving the wheels off the nicest car you can find; letting people abuse your precious; an impressive performance by Beck's kids; taking fake places at face value; and, most importantly, instilling the road trip spirit and a love of maps in one's offspring; Follow along! | Just Back from Japan and Watching our Watchlists | 16 avr. 2026 | 00:46:18
This week on our little podcast, Alex and Randy talk about the Jim Farley Pantera and great PR advice for other auto execs before moving on to Randy's recent trip to Japan. He describes the general automotive vibe there: multi-generational Skylines casually out in the wild, tiny Kei cars everywhere, the cultural norm of backing into one's parking space, Cal-look Beetles, multicolored license plates, Mitsuokas, Tokyo Drift lookalikes, a ride on the bullet train, a visit to the Tamiya model store, and a missed Fast & Furious-themed opportunity (to be remedied next time). Next up, the pair go over highlights from their watchlists, including a former resident of our very own BaT HQ, some early Subaru love, a Sabrina pull, a matched pair, an odd but compelling boat, and an odd but compelling Cord. | The One-Year Garage: 1960 | 02 avr. 2026 | 01:18:00
This BaT Podcast episode, recorded on a particularly active day for the motorcycle shop next door, sees Alex, Randy and Cam choosing the best of the transitory period between the late '50s and mid '60s. They set the stage with politics, the state of American optimism, and the top film, music and motorsports events of the year before picking their favorite vehicles in the Sports Car, Truck/4x4, Family Hauler, Daily Driver, and Wild Card categories. Along the way: driving a DB4 in flip flops; wildly varying opinions on the '60 Galaxie lineup; a country sedan that isn't; big honkin' Brit cars; light name-calling; a tight race in trucks; a helluva deal; an aquatic detour in high style; an aspirational rush into GT territory; overloading a Giulietta TI; a sad Mini merger; and a most honorable mention. | (B)aT the Movies: American Graffiti (1973) | 19 mars 2026 | 01:07:15
This BaT Podcast episode, the fourth in our series about Car Movies, covers the surprise hit American Graffiti—the early, scrappy, low-budget George Lucas effort featuring Ron(nie) Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, and many more names who might not be at the tips of our tongues in 2026 but whose roles in the movie have left indelible marks on so many of us. And let us not forget the cast of true A-listers led by Milner's legendary yellow Deuce coupe. Alex, Cam, Beck, and Zac talk about what the film meant (or didn't mean) to kids who grew up in various parts of California, even ones from a generation after it was made; its vérité-adjacent shooting style; Mel's as a story anchor; the drunken antics of Harrison Ford and company; a revelation that (a thinly disguised) Curt works at BaT; a diegetic score culminating in the hardest-hitting usage of "Green Onions" ever; Wolfman Jack as an omniscient narrator; how texting and Tinder would have rendered the movie impossible; the car history of George Lucas; modern gangs of teens on e-bikes; and what the '90s versions of the hero and villain cars would have been. | E30 M3 Dreams and Cars We've Missed | 12 mars 2026 | 00:53:10
This week, Alex talks with Beck and Zac about a formative pair of BMWs in Zac's neighborhood growing up; a snowballed BMW project threatening to be come a full avalanche; a very quick turnaround; a curious Bay Area car-buying ploy; Alex's odd but steadfast list of cheap childhood cars he'd buy if only he could find them; (misplaced?) nostalgia for late-1980s Ford performance cars and keyless entry code buttons; and attainable transaxle Porsches. The team goes on to describe a brief history of the Toyota celebrity support race at the Long Beach Grand Prix; impressive feats from a 190E 2.3 16-valve; Gene Hackman's side gig; Tommy Kendall, an all-around decent guy; a good color change; an interesting museum collection sale; and current watchlist favorites punctuated with Porsche whale-tale nerdiness and shame. | Palm Springs, Important Questions, Favorite Recent Listings | 05 mars 2026 | 00:43:41
This week, Alex brings in the big guns. Randy, Howard, and Zac talk about our recent Palm Springs event; crazy winds and a curious white substance in the southern California mountains; a magnet for male attention; important questions about people who film everything they do; a remarkably un-harrowing experience at Disneyland; reviews of Alex's beautiful new Euro 308GTB; a flying Corvette; an exceptional 240Z; and discontinued BaT merch that haunts Randy. They also talk about hunting the ones that got away and the perpetual lie of project car completion percentage, take a brief stop in Aviation Corner with Alex, and preview a very special upcoming collection sale. Also featured: a very bad dog, split-window Corvettes hitting escape velocity, and favorite auctions from the last couple of weeks. | FIXED: The One-Year Garage: 1980 | 27 févr. 2026 | 01:25:29
Apologies to our listeners using Apple Podcasts - an upload snafu caused you to get a repeat of last week's episode. Here's this week's One Year! It's malaise time—or is it? This week, Alex, Cam, Tyler, and Beck choose their top five vehicles from the model year 1980 in an impromptu, nearly unprepped episode. Spoiler alert: you've heard Tyler talk about bikes, but it's a widely known "secret" around the halls of BaT that his taste in cars is...well, weird. The crew talk about their surprisingly fun research, skin-deep beauty, and the wide variety of cultural ways in which 1980 was a transitional period They also narrowly avoid a prolonged version of the usual "what is a supercar" debate; slightly cheat with Euro cars; spend a surprising amount of time on the Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Trail Duster; stump Alex (again) but allow him out of perpetual loserhood; talk about the various trips one might take in a Vanagon; discovered all sorts of eagles glee; recount a worse "learning to drive stick" story than most of you have, thankfully; and take an unexpected but welcome diversion into the land (sea?) of Boston Whaler center consoles. Mentioned in this episode: 8:42 Ex-Steve McQueen 1952 Chevrolet 3800 Pickup with Camper and Husqvarna CR250 9:45 Ex-Steve McQueen bikes on BaT 17:42 1980 BMW M1 21:33 1980 Honda CBX Super Sport and 29-Years-Owned 1980 Honda CBX Super Sport 23:36 Euro 1980 Porsche 930 Turbo 26:34 1980 Ferrari 512 BB 28:34 1980 Ferrari 308 GTBi 30:04 1980 Plymouth Trail Duster 31:56 1978 Dodge Ramcharger Top Hand 4×4 32:31 Dodge Ramcharger / Plymouth Trail Duster model page 34:04 Ex-CHP 1982 Dodge Ramcharger 4×4 35:07 One-Family-Owned 1980 Volkswagen Scirocco S 5-Speed 38:50 Single-Family-Owned 1980 Porsche 911SC Coupe Weissach 43:05 Euro 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 45:00 1980 Cadillac Seville 52:31 1979 Ford Pinto Wagon 4-Speed 52:47 Time Machine: A Success Story in Motion from BaT and Pennzoil 53:38 1980 Ford Pinto Rallye Pack Wagon 4-Speed 56:01 1980 AMC Eagle 2-Door Sedan 58:03 1979 Jeep CJ-7 Golden Eagle 4-Speed 1:01:12 1980 GL 4WD - US Ski Team Wagon 1:04:07 1980 Mercedes-Benz 280GE Cabriolet 4-Speed 1:06:44 8k-Mile 1980 Ford Mustang McLaren M-81 1:10:03 1984 Zimmer Golden Spirit Classic 1:12:23 Single-Family-Owned 1986 Boston Whaler Montauk 17′ Project 1:14:28 Porsche 935 K3 1:21:20 V8-Powered 1980 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV 5-Speed 1:24:38 1980 Toyota Celica RA45 GT2000 Rally Got suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community, One Year Garage episode, or (B)aT the Movies subject? | Favorite Motorcycle Auctions of 2025 | 19 févr. 2026 | 00:53:35
Last year was, almost inarguably, our best year ever for motorcycle auctions. This week on the podcast, Alex and Tyler discuss each of their top 10 bikes of the year. Along the way, they touch on a public transport admission; daily and weekly firsts; the care taken to design parts that will always be visible; their favorite exhaust systems; scaring horses off roads a century ago; the difficulty in modernizing the Harley-Davidson; left-hand throttles and Colt Pythons; Bimota and Harley trivia; odd partnerships and engine configurations; and a great run of big pre-war, air-cooled fours. | (B)aT the Movies: Days of Thunder (1990) | 12 févr. 2026 | 01:07:37
Join us, diehard cinephiles, for the third in our new series about Car Movies, wherein we wax poetic about the uncut gem Days of Thunder, starring Tom Cruise and Robert Duvall. Alex, Randy, Beck, and Tyler discuss The Randy and Alex Film Festival; the movie's (completely stacked) intro credits; behind-the-scenes drama; Cary Elwes as Iceman; Alex's deep disappointment at the film's 37% Rotten Tomatoes score; some of the film's many profoundly unlikely scenarios; drinkin' weird stuff and Bud heavies in a moving car hauler; and a surprising number of personal health jokes, but not to do with the scenes you're thinking of (which have perhaps not aged as well as some other parts of the movie); Also covered: the gritty and impressive race cinematography; the real BAT.com; the best '90s movie parking lot; the formative way in which several of our crew learned about drafting; and, of course, the Cruise Run. Tyler reveals himself as easy to please, while Beck's godfather does not. Finally, we get a late (and exceedingly rare) name drop from our Mr. Nonnenberg. This week, Alex, Randy, and Beck talk about the correct way to staff a pickup and/or a 911SC; our recent experience at Motoring Club Cars & Coffee in San Francisco; handling good friends in bad cars; Trooper apologies; "black plates" on black cars; the true meaning of car culture (hint: it involves stealing from children); the overall event situation in and around SF; Alex's looming family trip to Disneyland, God help him; the wrong way to think about a nature preserve; and Pro 7 memories. Next up is our favorite recent Question of the Week, wherein the crew covers a failed bumper backdate, vice-and-hammer metalwork, and extremely questionable battery mounting techniques. They briefly explore the differences between Mr. Sandman and Enter Sandman, then lust after green-dial 911s, a vintage Texaco gas station, a John Oates/Emory 356, an SVO Mustang, and other watchlist favorites. This week, Alex and Randy begin with a frank look at the Deville Debacle of the weekend before last and have a discussion about how we handle major issues and mistakes as a company. On a lighter note, they move on to a recap of the fun had in Arizona for Auction Week and a followup in Vegas, debate the value proposition of a $40 corndog at the veritable circus of a live tentpole auction, and give shout-outs to several of the BaT valued Local Partners who were in Scottsdale with us. Next up, our excitement for the upcoming BaT Meet-Up in Palm Springs; James Garner's black/gold Hertz GT350; auction fees on high-dollar cars; the Eisenhower step; blowing minds in an R34 Skyline while driving through the desert with bros; an ode to early Hondas; the perfect '32 Ford spec; the Super Bowl vs GNRS, an easy choice if ever there was one; and finally, nerding out on Pajeros, Ladas, and 1970s ski racks. | The One-Year Garage: 2026 | 15 janv. 2026 | 01:07:08
This week we're putting a modern twist on everybody's favorite game: The One Year Garage is visiting the fresh, dewy, barely sentient year of 2026 to see what of its offerings might strike the fancy of the diehard old-car obsessives on our panel. Spoiler alert: there are strongly held opinions, some of which are not the same as yours. Along the way, they also cover Tekashi 6ix9ine; hypercar ignorance; the cost of modern car ownership; when 2014 still means "new"; auto show nostalgia; Fiero dreams; DRS on a "street car"; (good) weird small cars; non-metallic snarkiness; exotic e-bikes; Dakar semis; a far-off Scout fantasy; gigantic vehicles with gobs of power; going solo in a Sterrato; Morgan snarkiness; and a general unease with the new car industry. For those unfamiliar, the rules of One Year Garage are simple: each of our contestants, round-robin-style, pick a vehicle for every one of five categories: Sports Car, Daily Driver, Family Hauler, Truck/4x4, and Wild Card. All picks must be (or will theoretically be) available during the 2026 model year. Once a particular car has been picked, it can't be picked again. Self-doubt is encouraged, and judgment must be passed on others' choices. Arguments about what belongs in a certain category are expected. And the group must accidentally leave out at least one important option, the absence of which must raise the ire of a minimum of two people on Instagram. Enjoy!

| BaT Stats, 2025 Awards, Watchlist Favorites, and Too Much Time in a Tiny Plane | 08 janv. 2026 | 00:59:50 | |
Alex is joined by Randy and Zac to discuss monster trucks of yore; 1990s Sacramento basketball; "frame off" restorations of unibody cars; newly published BaT stats and Randy's thoughts on 2025 from the president's perspective; the least popular theme park for kids; an ex-Nonnenberg car live on the site; the first Radwood; and whether Zac can ever be a truck guy. Moving on we talk about the annual BaT Awards, which we all look forward to every year; tease an upcoming Meet-Up in Palm Springs, BaT's first track event, and Route 66 activities to come; highlight current watchlist picks; give some Healey love; park a (probably broken) 912 inside a coffee shop; arrive at a stereotypical convergence on Porsche colors; and marvel at a very special Thunderbird whose history we are all fascinated with. | 2025 Year in Review | 01 janv. 2026 | 00:48:33
Alex is joined by fellow BaT senior luminaries, Howard and Zac, to take a look back at 2025 and ring in the new year. They regale us with some of their favorite or otherwise notable listings from throughout the year, and along the way talk about Howard as a secret Corvette guy; the glory of the Mazdaspeed Protege and its predecessors; the Valentine One (and related bad advice from Howard); and key value differences between the beginning and end of 2025. Also discussed: a rare glimpse into curation regrets; alphanumeric Lambo soup; going from one first world problem to the next (some of which involve virus-related emergency roadside stops); teasers for upcoming BaT events; a mutual yearning to get back out on track; and resurrecting Crashgate 2008. | Holiday Insanity, Movie Cars, and Plymouth Connoisseurship | 25 déc. 2025 | 00:47:17
Alex, Randy, Beck, and Tyler discuss Hanukkah gift-giving strategies; holiday road trips to the snow, in order of escalating insanity; and a highly charged movie debate. This last subject becomes a jumping-off point for an extended talk about movie-adjacent cars; lamenting and besmirching; Plymouth wood paneling connoisseurship; ghosts of American car brands past; drift missiles; stalker Eagles; and generational Jeep headlight trauma. becomes a jumping-off point for an extended talk about movie-adjacent cars; lamenting and besmirching; Plymouth wood paneling connoisseurship; ghosts of American car brands past; drift missiles; stalker Eagles; and generational Jeep headlight trauma. | (B)aT the Movies: The Fast and the Furious (2001) | 18 déc. 2025 | 01:07:31
We've been teasing it for weeks now. You loved our Bullitt podcast, so we now present you with another movie breakdown. This time it's from the opposite end of the car movie spectrum: the original The Fast and the Furious from 2001. Alex is joined by Zac, Beck, and Cam to air out their multigenerational viewpoints on this cinematic masterpiece, which was so formative to the automotive pursuits of many of our community members—especially those under, shall we say, "a certain age." The crew discuss how to rank the 11 movies in the oeuvre; the mentality of working with what you have (otherwise known as "run what you brung"); explanations behind some of the cars missing from the F&F roster, and one now missing from history; and the age-old tradition of terrible shifting in car movies. Also covered: the movie's notoriously uneven jargon; a catalog of stacked fender stickers; the modern, OEM-approved version of underglows; what it means to put down 10s in 2025 vs in 2001; an architectural travesty; mermaids; favorite cars from the movie; AI-written characters, 25 years before their time; and yes, even throughlines to other "car movies" like Bullitt and American Graffiti. | Festive Meats and an Italo-Texan Odyssey | 11 déc. 2025 | 01:06:29
Alex, Beck, and Tyler catch up in what can only be called a rambling fashion. They immediately launch into a career appreciation of Bill Paxton (RIP); talk sharing Thanksgiving plates and Tyler's 10-carb weekend; take a largely ignorant automotive linguistic detour; defeat the perils of disassembling modern interior trim; grouse about California smog testing; reminisce about the long road to Beck's E46 ZHP sedan going live on the site; and briefly cover VW Type 2 and Vanagon powerplant options. Alex describes the culmination of a lifelong dream: his recent acquisition of, and road trip in, his Euro 1978 308 GTB (spoiler: he reveals that, to this day, he's never had a car break down on the road). The crew wrap up by riffing on their various BaT watchlists. | The Kobus Interview, Revisited | 04 déc. 2025 | 00:32:52
As our hosts recover from their various holidays, we revisit our May 2023 interview with Kobus, BaT commenter and contributor extraordinaire. Randy and Kobus discuss his formative years at Kyalami in South Africa (including talking his way into a media pass for the 1969 and 1970 Nine Hours); his love of driving and racing his vintage Porsches; getting into vintage racing in a stock 356 Cabriolet during the pandemic; and acquiring his Sand Beige 912 racer, seen at tracks and events all over the Northeast, followed by a very historic Formula V car. The two go on to share in the beauty and danger of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix in Schenley Park; their mutual admiration of the Goodwood Revival; their thoughts on Luftgekühlt; Kobus' work for the 356 Registry in print and online; and pre-war hillclimbs. | The One-Year Garage: 2012 | 20 nov. 2025 | 01:03:16
Alex, Beck, and Zac sit down for the latest episode of One Year Garage our popular podcast game highlighting staff picks for the ultimate sports car, family hauler, truck, daily driver, and wild card from a given model year. This time it's 2012, and the crew revisit cultural moments such as The Audacity of Taupe, the Mayan calendar, and the top movies of the year, before game time. Spoiler: they then immediately hand Beck the lead and declare him the winner, perhaps jumping the gun just a tad. Also heard: the trio reveal the rest of their picks, discuss less-than-ideal motorcycle engineering, argue about Lexus colors, toss around nauseating phrases, lament the modern dearth of shooting brakes, relive the unfortunate gravity-aided demise of Zac's Cayman R, and share in collective McLaren confusion. Alex and Randy sit down to catch up and talk about a notable Success Story, the best roll bar this side of Durango, and an upcoming epic road trip for Alex and his son before a recap of Randy's recent trip to the UK for a special Grand Prixscreening, the NEC Classic Motor Show in Birmingham, and hot laps at Goodwood. The duo move on to Reliant Scimitars; early-'80s badge engineering; reliving family road trips to Texas that may or may not have actually occurred; sage car-buying advice that every one of us has ignored; the day's accidental automotive show-and-tell; perhaps the perfect combination of family heritage and first stick shift; and a brief but telling insight into why BaT is the way BaT is. close out by looking at their recent watchlists and Alex relates a secondhand anecdote that epitomizes Randy's ideal life. | B(aT) the Movies: Bullitt (1968) | 06 nov. 2025 | 01:06:58
In a BaT Podcast first that we'd love to make a regular feature, four of the crew gather at HQ to hash out one of our collective favorite car movies: none other, of course, than 1968's Bullitt with Steve McQueen. The crew start by establishing their various McQueen bona fides and history with the movie before talking about the evasive nature of the plot (and what, in fact, that plot might be); filming and financing details; background car spotting; San Francisco landmarks, both here and gone; razor sharp jaws; the sleep-inducing sections; regenerating hubcaps; the Lalo Schifrin score (or lack thereof, in key places); and of course, the most famous car chase in the movies. But they don't stop there - this movie has a lot more to cover, like several unintentional car stunts; Mopar-on-camera violence; gun-toting styles of late-'60s movie detectives; the film's sartorial choices; homages in later movies; and which of those movies should make it onto the list of future podcast subjects. | Design and Empathy with Raffi Minasian | 30 oct. 2025 | 01:00:50
Please help us extend a warm welcome to one of BaT's favorite designers, teachers, sellers, and all-around renaissance men: Raffi Minasian, known in these halls as @raffi. He talks with Alex about his father's "trial by fire" mechanical training program; the roots of his obsession with car design; learning to drive in a 1952 Crosley (with doors!); human- and object-based empathy; a novel way to stay calm in the BaT comments; accidentally becoming a star seller for other people's cars; the odd calmness that 1,200 live BaT auctions can provide; his unorthodox, Pegaso-centric introduction to Art Center College of Design, his future alma mater; his 16 years in die cast design at Franklin Mint; insights into shifts in popular culture; embracing the ridiculous; and the Beetle as a gateway drug. The pair close out talking about Raffi's efforts in nontraditional, hands-on education for young children, his recent foray into TV writing and acting, and his numerous, fascinating upcoming projects. | Great Photos Make Great Listings, with Matt Schiller, CEO of Snappr | 23 oct. 2025 | 00:45:45
Alex and Beck sit down to catch up with Matt Schiller, CEO of Snappr—the professional-photos-anywhere agency that supports our BaT Plus listing photography service. The Australian Bay Area transplant talks about starting the company in Sydney with no intention of moving into the automotive space; assures us that even CEOs have excuses for looking at BaT instead of working; reviews the importance of accurate and numerous photos for large purchases made over the internet; and goes into some very telling stats gleaned from Snappr's seven-year relationship with BaT (the numbers don't lie: better photos sell more cars for higher prices!). The trio talk about the importance of keeping AI out of automotive sales photography, and also keeping a creator in the loop when using generative AI for non-automotive applications. All three are pilots at various levels, so fair warning: the tail(dragger) end of the conversation descends quickly into airplane madness.
