Ep. 116 - Sour Beers part 209 Feb 202102:15:47

Sour beers are a divisive group of brews. You got your old school took-a-long-time-to-master sours like lambics n such, and you have the new school pack-as-much-fruit-as-possible-until-you-cant-taste-beer sours. Here, we finish the discussion about what sour beers are, the different kinds of sours, and how they're made. We invite Don back as a guest host, and our special guest, one-half of Beware The Vine (our theme song writers), Aimee Klein is here to hang out and possibly sing us some telegrams?

In this episode we sample and review Stacked Deck Brewing's Astronaut Sauce with mango, guava, and pineapple, Oliphant Brewing's Squall Me Squishmael banana and almond sour, Junkyard Brewing's Nuance Strikes Back pink pepper and lemon zest saison sour and Muir Dry Hopped Foudre Sour along with their Bohemian Flex guava peach and tangerine gose, Rodenbach Grand Cru, and the ever present Duchesse De Bourgogne from Brouwerij Verhaeghe.

Listen at the end of this episode for the full version of Sex, Drugs, and Cabaret by Beware The Vine.

For more information on singing telegrams, or other shenanigans, by Aimee Klein, head over to here or email her at kleindepp@yahoo.com

Ep. 113 - NA Beers part 319 Jan 202100:47:54

Dry January. Starting on the 1st and going without alcohol of any kind until February 1st. That idea is catching on globally, and for some it's a way to hit the reset button, make some pandemic-inspired resolutions, and find new ways to relax and destress. Starting in 2013 in the UK with around 4,000 people, it has now reached millions of folks who are just wanting to make some healthier choices for a month.

In this episode, good ol' guest #2 Ben is back to hang with the BBR crew. Today we sample and review the Citra Lager, IPA, Black Ale, and Coffee Stout from Hairless Dog brewing, and follow it up at the end with Lagunitas Brewing's IPNA.

Ep. 112 - Sorta Spumantes?14 Jan 202101:16:20

We know we should have put out this episode on champagnes/sparkling wines two weeks ago, but things have been hectic and busy at the BBR studio. So instead we release today's show in celebration of heading into year three of us telling dad jokes, learning new things, and generally getting a bit tipsy with you our listeners! We even harken back to our first year and get one of the BBR founders Andrea Anderson back on the show, along with our lovely guest #2 Ben Revier. We had the intention of doing just spumantes, but then we did a little bit of research and realized how laughable that was. BBR crew got through it only slightly scathed, but there's just something about sparkling wines that gets everyone in a giggly mood.

Today we sample and review J. Roget Spumante, Fitvine prosecco spumante brut, Risata Moscato d'Asti DOCG, Chandon Sweet Star, and Moet's Moet & Chandon Nectar Imperial.

Ep. 110 - Pastry Stouts29 Dec 202001:17:31

Well folks, it's definitely winter time here in the upper midwest of the US, because this past week we finally got our first blizzard of the year. And what do you do when it's cold as hell out? You snuggle in for some tasty brews by your partner, and bake up some holiday cookies or treats, all while sitting in front of a nice fire. One of the few good things we like about this season is the robust, hearty flavor of stouts and porters. On this episode, we wanted to take a closer look at the sweeter side of this fine beer, and dive into pastry stouts.

In this show we sample and review six by Drekker Brewing: Bourbon Barrel Aged Flizzard with the variants of Oreo, Snickers, and Butterfinger, followed by their What Lies Beneath Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with cacao, coffee, and vanilla, and the variant with Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup. The coffee in these last two was provided by the cats at Thunder Coffee, and the maple syrup that came out of those said barrels was delicious as well! We also taste Drekker's Smooth Or Die Peanut Butter Milk Stout. Lastl but not least is Stone Brewing's Xocoveza imperial stout with chocolate, coffee, pasilla peppers, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Ep. 106 - Barrel Aged Brews part 3 of 3 - LAST CALL edition01 Dec 202000:59:56

We finally made it to the last installment of the series on barrel aged brews! We've previously asked brewers from two local breweries (Junkyard Brewing and Drekker Brewing) 10 questions we thought our audience might want to know about what barrel aging a beer is all about. In this LAST CALL edition, we stick with the traditional LC formula and get a little tipsy with Mick Klein and cousin Torry while asking the brewers off the wall hits such as "How do you get such a high ABV% if it doesn't come from the barrel", and "What's a yeast cake", to "How does barrel temp affect the beer", and "what future barrel projects do you have coming"?

We sample and review Great Divide Brewing's Wood Werks Barrel Series #3 brown rye ale, Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck's 2013 Trignac XII, and 3 Floyds Brewing's Pillar of Beasts barrel aged salted caramel barleywine. Some hefty bois to round out the trifecta, and we hope you enjoy!

In this episode we sample and review three beers from Drekker's Sixth-year Anniversary party when they released Six Feet Apart, Six Feet Under, and Six Ways From Sunday, all bourbon barrel-aged stouts.

Ep. 104 - Barrel Aged Brews part 1 of 317 Nov 202001:27:04

Welcome to our highly anticipated Barrel-aged series where we hear from actual local brewers themselves on the process! The BBR crew got cousin Torry back to the dungeon, along with special guest and long time musician Mick Klein, to get some ethanol education and enjoy some tasty beers! We got interview soundbites from Aaron Juhnke, the owner and brewer at Junkyard Brewing in Moorhead, and Tom Knowlton, brewer over at Drekker Brewing in Fargo, to give answers to some questions we thought you might like to know!

In part one we rate and review these three barrel-aged brews released in 2020 from Junkyard:King Size stout double barrel aged Willet bourbon barrels, and two Basement Business barrel-aged barleywines, one aged in Willet Bourbon barrels while the other aged in Willet rye barrels.

Ep. 103 - an Intro to Brandies and Cognacs10 Nov 202001:44:22

When we think of Brandies and Cognacs, we envision sitting beside a nice fire in a chair with a blanket over your legs, brandy in hand, almost romanticizing it like in a Norman Rockwell painting. Our friend Ben stops in again, and we actually cover a bit of ground on what these spirits are, where they can come from, and the differences of how some are made.

In this episode we sample and review E&J Brandy's VSOP Grand Blue, Ara Jan Armenian Brandy, Copper & King's Butchertown Reserve Cask, Tattersall Apple Brandy, Courvoisier, and Hennessy.

Ep. 101 - Pumpkin Beers & Horror Flicks 202027 Oct 202002:00:51

Welcome to another spoooooooooky episode of BBR! Today former cohost Travis lent us his apartment to record the show because the work on the dungeon has fell behind, and to him we say thanks! Along with several pumpkin 'beers' we sample and review for you fine folks, we sprinkle in a few doses of discussions on horror flicks, such as what are the top three movies people SHOULD watch in the genre, least scary movie, and what we think about certain films in general.

In this episode we sample and discuss Ace's Pumpkin Hard Cider, Samuel Adams' Jack-O, Dogfish Head's Punkin Ale, New Belgium's Voodoo Ranger Atomic Pumpkin, Avery Brewing's Rumpkin, three from Southern Tier Brewing including Pumking Imperial Pumpkin Ale, Pumking Nitro, and Cold Brew Coffee Pumking, Shipyard Brewing's Smashed Pumpkin, and Rebel Hard Coffee's Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Latté. That's a frightening amount of brews to taste, but we're up to be the heroes (or zeroes) in this story and get it done!

Ep. 98 - Oktoberfest Biers 2020 (or SPOILOR!)06 Oct 202001:04:34

Even though there aren't any "Fests" going on this year for obvious reasons, the BBR crew still wanted to pretend there was, so we got together and drank a bunch of Fest-style beers. In this episode we sample and review Summit's Oktoberfest Marzen Style, Sierra Nevada's Oktoberfest, Swing Barrel's Mr. Oktober Oktoberfest Lager, Icewind Brewing double showing of their Frozen Hosen Oktoberfest Marzen and their Festbier: Dirndl Dropper, and Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest Marzen, followed by a revisit from last year's winner, and from our host beer Marchtoberfest from DCR Brewing. We'll don our Lederhos'n and our Tyrolean's and hoist our steins once again to be filled to the brim, because today, our spirits are high!

In the mixed pack from Cigar City we sample and review Florida Cracker belgian white ale, Guayabera citra pale ale, Jai Alai India pale ale, and Florida Man  DIPA. Ep. 96 - Zoo Brew 202022 Sep 202001:29:06

Besides being serenaded in the background by musicians, and the wind being inconveniently noisy, the BBR crew had quite the blast hanging out at the socially distant event of the summer for the F/M region! Not only did we see lots of animals (and even take selfies with a camel), but we BECAME animals hunting down some tasty brews here at the Red River Zoo. We got to chat with representatives about the following beers: Lupulin Brweing and their CPB and Fashion Mullet, Dogfish Head and their Slightly Mighty IPA, Seaquench Ale, and 60 minute IPA (we also got news about new flavors from Angry Orchard coming out in 2021, and Sam Adams and DFH are making an N/A brew), Summit's Triumphant Session IPA, Slugfest IPA, and their Oktoberfest, and finally with Empyrean sampling their Dark Side vanilla porter, Long Route peanut butter porter, Pitched Blue Black and Blueberry Ale, and their Aries Marzen. Wild times were had, and we can't wait for you all to hear it!

Ep. 94 - Nox's Notables part 408 Sep 202001:24:37

Welcome once again to another fridge clearing episode of BBR! This is our fourth Nox's Notables, which Nox uses to showcase some of the more review-worthy beers recently released, most of which are from the FM area. In this show, we sample and review a collab set of brews that can cuvee with each other called Mutually Inclusive. Pryes Brewing did one, and Drekker Brewing did the other, and it was quite the experience! We also check out Lindeman's Cuvee Rene Oude Kriek Lambic Ale, Flying Ember's Stick Figure hard kombucha, Two Chicks Citrus Margarita Sparkling Tequila and Citrus Cocktail, Apostelbrau's Roggen Bier, the Cloverfield American Wheat Ale with Honey and the Down for Mimos Blonde Ale with Orange from DrumConRath Brewing, and three additional brews from Drekker: their Long Haired Freaky People DIPA, Strawberry Cheesecake Secret Handshake Milkshake IPA, and Bumbleberry Pie Slang Du Jour Sour A La Mode. Believe it or not, one of these beers gets our highest ever rating, a damn near perfect 6! Tune in to find out which one it is!

Ep. 92 - Rieslings (or Speckled Cock)25 Aug 202001:28:37

What's a better wine to enjoy in the hot summer months than a nicely chilled glass of white? And while Chardonnay is arguably the most popular of the white wines, today we delve into the sweet and/or dry world of Rieslings! We here at BBR most definitely were looking for an amusing adventure, so we collected our thoughts, set our eyes towards a gathering of grapes, and with a hearty twist of the bottle cap, we sample and review Boundary Break's 'OLN Ovid Line North' Medium Dry Riesling, Elk Cove's 2017 Willamette Valley Estate Riesling, the 2018 KungFu Girl from Charles Smith Wines, RELAX's RIesling, Nik Weis's St Urbans Hof Estate Riesling Old Vines,  and two from Chateau Ste Michelle: their 2018 Columbia Valley Dry riesling, and their 2017 Harvest Select Sweet Riesling.

Ep. 91 - WIYM - Loco for Locals!18 Aug 202001:10:28

We here at BBR absolutely love craft beer, and with that comes the love of the craft beer scene! Since we are based primarily out of the Fargo-Moorhead area in ND & MN, we have a blast supporting our friends and breweries as much as we can, so in this show we get back to our roots, and enjoy eight brews made right here in the metro region!

During this episode we sample and review Swing Barrel's three flavors of their Short Shorts Hard Seltzer, then hit up Drekker with their collab with Brewing Projekt called Flow Futuristic, followed by DrumConRath's Bog Road Special Gose Strawberry Lemonade Sour Ale and Ligh-Pa New England Style session IPA. We end the podcast with two from Junkyard: Mama's Trip to Hawaii Tropical Punch Style Sour Ale and Tangerine from their famous Super Slurp Fruited Sour with Lactose and Vanilla line. Such tasty beers!

Ep. 90 - First Time With sakes11 Aug 202001:05:39

We here at BBR like to think of ourselves as having international tastes with otherworldly palettes. No? Perhaps this episode on Japanese sakes will change your mind! As is our tradition when we do our first show on a certain category of alcohol, we like to do an educational portion that covers some FAQ's, history, and what the true definition of that liquid is. Sometimes Nox can run a little long on this part, but he keeps it a little more brief in his quest for knowledge of this fermented brew. In this episode we taste and discuss Miyashita Sake Brewery's "Sunshine Country", Tentaka's Hawk On The Heavens, Kitsukura Brewery's Honjozo Taru Sake, Bushido's sake in a can, and Umenoyado Brewery's Ty Ku Junmai Ginjo. Crank up The Vapors and let's get this Nomikai started!

Ep. 89 - An Intro to Rums (or It's a Complicated Industry)04 Aug 202001:05:56

Well neighbors, we had to tick this one off our list, so today we bring you RUMS. The most confusing and unregulated of the major distilled spirits, it was a wonder doing research to find the answers to some of the most common questions we could come up with. How does this booze differ from others, how is it made, and what are all the different kinds and regions? These and other topics are debated in the sugarcane-filled world of rums. In this episode we sample and review Rhum J.M., El Dorado 12 Year, Appleton Estate 8 year and 12 year, Kirk & Sweeny 23 year, and Plantation XO.

Ep. 88 - Coffee Beers28 Jul 202001:30:58

The Dungeon erupts into quite a few heated discussions about the topic of today's show. Big Ern and Nox are coffee drinkers, so BBR did an episode dedicated to this specific adjunct of beer. But wait, there are 4* different styles involved with the 6 beers we sample and discuss today. Those brews are Beaver Island's Muggsy's Coffee Lager, Deschutes Luna Jo Cold Brew Coffee Lager, Burning Brothers Roasted Coffee Ale, Oskar Blues Death By Affogato Porter, Founders 2020 KBS, and Pabst Blue Ribbon Hard Coffee. Will our returning guest and host of Ben's Jazz Attic, Ben Revier, be the peaceful moderator in this chuckled-filled episode? Tune in to find out!

Ep. 87 - LAST CALL - Just a Wee Bit Heavy...21 Jul 202001:13:28

The BBR crew took a much needed weekend off, but not to worry, we do have an episode tucked away just for such an emergency! Recorded June 14th, we go over an astounding 9 brews total. With our guest Blake back on, there's sure to be an argument or three about how the following beers taste:

From Icewind we have the Mapleton Margarita Lime Gose, the Sundog Lager, and the Wynona Porter. From 903 brewing in Texas we have sample their Kilt Switch Scotch Wee Heavy and their Sherman Bock German Bock. We also sample and review a collab between Blackstack Brewing and Falling Knife Brewing called Chop Chop. Then Dorothy's new World Lager from Toppling Goliath, followed by Schell's Shift Happens DDH Lager, and Thesis Beer Project's Thesis Pieces: After Dark Imperial Peanut Butter Porter.

In this episode, Nick mixxes us a pair of Bee's Knee's cocktails using Boreal Juniper Gin and Ritual's gin spirit, followed by a pair of Palomas made with Cascahuin reposado and pit it against Ritual's tequila spirit.

Ep. 86 - Shandies and Radlers14 Jul 202001:01:53

While we here at BBR didn't debate whether these beer-coctions are called Radlers or Shandies,  we DID debate on which of these brews were the best on this day! While a traditional half-and-half mix of a good lighter-tasting beer and a real lemonade (or lemon-lime soda) sounds like an easy thing to try yourself at home, these fantastic breweries have given great thought and research into their OWN recipes. We sampled and reviewed Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy, Jack Pine's Lemon Shandy Cream Ale, Fargo Brewing's Kenny's Lemonade Radler, Revelation Ale Work's Rev RADler, and Half Brother's Half Twisted Radler.

Welcome to another highly educational edition of BBR! In this episode we invited Grant Wigen, formerly of Kilstone Brewing, to ponder over all things beer, like the argument that there are only really two basic types of beer: Ales and Lagers. What are these two types of beers, and how do they differentiate? We sample and review Leinenkugel's Original, Red Stripe Lager, Coors Banquet, Fargo Brewing Company's The Hoff Kolsch, Junkyard's Grandpa Bill's Pils, Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale, and Guinness's Blonde Ale.

Ep. 84 - LAST CALL with WellBeing Brewing04 Jul 202000:53:20

During the holiday weekend, we here at BBR wanted to put this non-monetary bonus episode out there for our listeners who are drinking responsibly and being safe while enjoying some fireworks or are on the lake. Tom from WellBeing Brewing shipped us a care package we purchased from their website consisting of four NA beers, and two sparkling craft waters. We sample and review their Victory Wheat sports brew, Heavenly Body Golden Wheat, Hellraiser Dark Amber, Intentional IPA, followed by their CBD sparkling cousins the YuzuBloom and MelonGrass sparkling waters. Today's show is the first time a couple of us have tried CBD waters, and they didn't disappoint!

Ep. 82 - WIYM - Jayde Edition23 Jun 202001:04:57

The late great Dr. Suess once said, "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose" in a book called 'Oh, the places you'll go'. Our friend and colleague Jayde is moving (although only an hour away), and so we wanted to make sure that we got her to do her very own episode beforehand. She chose to do a WIYM show, with the goal of everyone bringing something they are thoroughly enjoying at the time, or were VERY curious about tasting. We also invited one of our favorite beer tasters Blake back to have some fun, This podcast opens up with Big Ern's rum-blended fruit slushy drink, then we dig into sampling Golden Road's Champango, B.Nektar's Zombie Killer Cider, Drastic Measure's Hittin Licks Smoothie Sour, Disgruntled Brewing's Dessert First Sour Ale,  Stacked Deck Brewing's Jazz Cabbage NEIPA, and ending with Blackstack Brewing's Little Spoon Cereal Milk Stout.

We once again have the pleasure of being invited to another brewery, and this one is BRAND NEW! We chat about the Honey Blonde Bombshell Blonde Ale, the Session One Amber Ale, the Squeeze Play Wheat IPA, the Indies 4 Brown Ale, and their Sugarfoot Jr. Vanilla Oatmeal Stout. Ep. 80 - Hefeweissens09 Jun 202001:22:49

How do you say Torulaspora Delbrueckii? We have NO IDEA, but it's a yeast that gives unique flavors to Hefeweissens, which is what we are sampling today! Ya know, in the springtime, you want a refreshing, lighter beer to go with the budding of flowers and grass growing, don't ya? What better example of that than the old stanby-by Hefes? In this super-sized episode we invite an old regular guest of ours, Don, back to the Dungeon for our first episode back since the pandemic took over our lives. We have a good time drinking Icewind's Weissen Shine, Weihenstephaner's Hefe Weissbier, Paulaner's Hefe-Weizen, Utepils' Ewald the Golden, Great Lakes Brewing's Lemon Hefeweizen, and Fargo Brewing Company's Life's a Peach. Join us in raising our glasses to a good time!

Ep. 79 - Import Beers03 Jun 202000:59:22

Welcome once again to another Zoom episode of Brews, Booze, & Reviews! Being stuck in one place to often these days has us craving some vacation time, and with vacation time, comes vacation beers! We put together a short list of some of the more widely accessible import beers and pretended we were in a fascinating new place (not really, we stared at screens the whole time). This episode contains a beer from Belgium (Leffe Blonde Abbey Ale), a beer from Germany (Hofbrau's Maibock), one from Mexico (Modelo Negra), and on from the UK (Robinson's Trooper).

Come escape with us as we discuss aromas, tasting notes, and have some laughs doing it!

Ep. 78 - Pre-Packaged Mixed Drinks26 May 202001:11:23

You ever go into the liquor store and see those little cans of mixed drinks and thought to yourself, "Are these even any good?"  Well do we have a surprise for you today! We picked up four different flavors at our favorite liquor store, and we're here to tell you what WE think. In this episode we sample the Mojito and Moscow Mule from Plain Spoke Cocktails, and the Chai White Russian and Bourbon Old Fashioned from Dashfire Bitters. How do the takes on each of these cocktails hold up under scrutiny of not only tasting like the drink they represent, but are they better than one poured by your average bartender? Stay tuned to find out!

Ep. 202 - Macro Brew Double Blind part 211 Oct 202200:55:56

Once again, the BBR crew decided to 'torture' ourselves and see if we can continue the legacy of not being able to tell the difference between several macro brews, like in episode 18 back in June of 2019. We invited back to the show cousin Torry for some fun laughs and confusing tastings!

Follow along with the BBR crew as we stumble through the following beers in this order:

1/A)  Michelob Lager

2/B)  Hamm's

3/C)  Budweiser Lager

4/D)  Busch

5/E)  Leinenkugel's Original Lager

6/F)  Old Milwaukee

7/G)  Pabst Blue Ribbon

Ep. 75 - Homebrewing a Stout09 May 202000:26:35

Welcome once again, neighbors, to a quick and easy episode of the podcast today! In this episode we discuss an overview on how we made this stout from the Brooklyn Brewshop sent to our friend Torry from a Bespoke.com subscription.

It was a Zoom recorded episode, so we have some video we did as well pieced together with clips from when we actually brewed the beer located at our youtube channel here:

Our first ever try with doing the podcast via Zoom Meeting, and it was kinda weird, but enjoyable!
