17. John D'earth: Jazz trumpet master, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and educator; On playing with everyone from Miles Davis to Dave Matthews, his musical theories (like the "grand" blues scale), nearly 40 year weekly gig, and his story.

jeudi 16 décembre 2021Durée 01:36:58

Our guest this week is the kind of person who knows pretty much everybody, and pretty much everybody knows him.  He has worked with household name artists from Miles Davis to Dave Matthews, and he’s spent a lifetime studying music and passing it along.

John D’earth is a performer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and educator, and he’s got a nearly 40 year run playing a weekly gig at Miller’s in Charlottesville, Virginia — presumably some kind of world record.  And we’re in luck because he brought his trumpet and his piano to our chat, and sometimes plays them both at the same time, explaining some of his theories and concepts.  Wait until you hear him compare and contrast, by trumpet, the “academic blues scale” versus what he calls, the “grand” blues scale.

We talk about Sonny Rollins, who John says is the greatest improvisor of all time.  We learn a new phrase about what it means to “humpty dumpty” a tune in jazz.  And we learn about John’s inspirations, from Charles Mingus to Jimmy Hendrix.

John believes “what the audience really wants is to see something authentic go down.”  I think we’ve captured that here, but you judge for yourself.  Enjoy these moments, with John D’earth.

16. Edwin Cox: Global CEO of West One Music Group; Music Engineer and Producer; On All Things Publishing, PRS, MCPS, PPL, and Other PROs, and Running a Global Production Music Company.

mardi 23 novembre 2021Durée 01:20:28

If the music business is an automobile our next guest is a mechanic, and we’re going to take a look under the hood.  That means getting into the nitty gritty, so hunker down.

Edwin Cox is the global CEO of West One Music Group, a production music company with offices and clients all over the world.  He lives in Los Angeles but he grew up and started his career in the UK.  So we’ll talk all about the UK licensing collectives and play the acronym game where we’ll have Edwin discuss what PRS, MCPS and PPL are.  We’ll talk about other foreign societies, income collection issues for publishers and production music catalogs, and the competitive landscape the defines the production music space.

Edwin started his musical journey as a DJ, wearing out his LP records, and working his way into music engineering and producing, finding himself involved in a number of hit records in the UK.

He then learned the publishing ropes at Boosey and Hawkes, and was elected to the Board of PRS for Music in the UK.

From the hustle of getting noticed to running his own company, this is a pen and paper episode!  And now, Edwin Cox…

7. Judith Finell: Forensic Musicologist, Expert Witness in Milestone Music Infringement Cases -- on AI, Sampling, "Blurred Lines," and "The Intersection of Music, Technology and Law"

jeudi 1 avril 2021Durée 01:45:23

What's it like sitting in the hot seat, the witness stand, testifying as the musical expert at one of the most talked about music infringement cases in recent memory?  Let’s find out...

Our guest in this episode is Judith Finell.  Judith testified on behalf of the Marvin Gaye family in the milestone “Blurred Lines” case in federal court as an expert witness, something she’s been doing for 25 years.

She is president of Judith Finell Music Services Inc, a boutique consulting firm with clients ranging from the Beastie Boys to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, to household name labels, publishers and media companies.    She leads a team of doctoral level musicologists -- based in New York, LA, and Europe -- most of whom are on the faculties of renowned conservatories and also perform and appear widely as musicians and scholars.

Judith is a classically trained pianist with a masters in musicology.  She’s a writer, public speaker, consultant, and professor, and she currently teaches the first course on forensic musicology in the country at UCLA.

In this episode Judith and I get into the weeds on everything from artificial intelligence to sampling and Blurred Lines, to playing piano on the radio at age 6.  Join me as we find out more about Judith Finell...

mercredi 3 mars 2021Durée 01:44:20

In this episode John Morand takes us behind the scenes of the recording studio, from cutting edits on an analog Studer 16 track tape machine (like the kind Led Zeppelin used back in the day) to running a drum set through a “Big Muff” distortion pedal.  From mediating between band members to doing audio production on "Corn Warriors," a competitive corn growing reality television show, John has a treasure chest of hilarious stories to tell.

John has worked with everyone from Sparkelhorse to Joan Osborne, Susanna Hoffs to Hanson, and many others in his 3+ decades as a music producer and studio owner.  He was an early pioneer in the "High Tech, Lo-Fi" movement.  He’s got platinum records to his credit, and he’s a founder of Sound of Music Recording Studios in Richmond, Virginia along with producer, rock star and music advocate, David Lowery from the band Cracker.  John is also an entrepreneur, musician and singer, songwriter, video producer and sound editor, college professor and dad.  Join us as we talk about the old days, the new days, and band fights.

vendredi 15 janvier 2021Durée 01:06:08

Curtis Daniel III is the Co-owner and Co-founder of Patchwerk Recording Studios in Atlanta, Georgia.  Some have called Atlanta the “Motown of the South” at least in good part due to the work Patchwerk has done.

Patchwerk has been responsible for recording one groundbreaking record after another, starting with Outkast, and including artists like Goodie Mob, Ludicris, T.I., Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Nas, and others like Ciara, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Usher, John Legend, Mariah Carey, and tons of others.  Curtis was a full scholarship, Division 1 football player at Michigan State before he switched gears.  He’s now a 25+ year veteran of the entertainment industry, a husband and a dad, and one of the most connected, and nicest, folks in Atlanta.  I’m excited for you to join me in this conversation with Curtis Daniel III.

15. Jack Rabid: Publisher of "The Big Takeover" Music Magazine, 41 Years Running, with Cool Music Your Friends Probably Don't Know About; Drummer and Vocalist; Music Aficionado; On What Makes Us Tick, and All The Cool Bands.

vendredi 15 octobre 2021Durée 02:04:25

Thank you Jim Dudukovich!

In this episode we talk about cool bands and stories, like how our guest sat in on drums with the Circle Jerks in New York because Chuck Biscuits, the drummer, wasn't able to play and our guest knew all their songs.

Jack Rabid is the publisher and creative genius behind "The Big Takeover," a bi-annual music magazine published out of New York City, going on 42 years now.  It reads like a music encyclopedia or mix tape guidebook, including 60-80 pages of album reviews written by Jack himself.  Jack’s a drummer and vocalist and has played in a number of bands.  And he’s a veteran of the “punk era,” emanating from New York City.  But mostly, he’s a music lover.

This interview kicks right in, mid conversation, with us talking about Jack’s softball game that he just got home from.  I ended up just hitting record, 86’ing the formalities of a “hello,” and rolling tape.

No one talks about music like Jack Rabid.  Here we go…
