Episode 63: Cement City, Dallas, Texas28 Jul 202500:37:56

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom

West Dallas is an area consisting of many communities and neighborhoods in Dallas, Texas, United States. West Dallas lies just west of Downtown Dallas, north of Oak Cliff, and east of Irving and Grand Prairie.

Largely lying in the Trinity River floodplain, the area's history has been largely defined by its relationship to the river, to industry, and to downtown. Although not incorporated into Dallas until the 1950s, West Dallas has had a close but problematic relationship to the city since its founding. The area is currently undergoing significant changes due to its central location within the city, attracting new development and revitalization efforts but also threatening existing communities.

Episode 62: Mia Zapata- Cherished daughter - sister - artist - friend - git11 Jul 202501:05:59

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!

Today’s episode is something I have wanted to cover for a while and with this being the 32nd anniversary of the death of Mia Zapata and thought this would be the best time to dive into her life, death and legacy.

Mia Katherine Zapata was an American musician who was the lead vocalist for the punk rock band The Gits. After gaining praise in the emerging grunge scene, Zapata was raped and murdered in Seattle in 1993 while walking home from the Comet Tavern at the age of 27.  The crime went unsolved for a decade before her killer, Jesus Mezquia, was arrested in 2003. The following year, Mezquia was tried, convicted, and sentenced to 36 years in prison.

Episode 51: Mary Lillian Ellison-The Fabulous Moolah07 Feb 202500:24:13

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!

Today I want to tell you about Mary Lillian Ellison, known as The Fabulous Moolah.

Mary Lillian Ellison  was an iconic professional wrestler whose career spanned more than five decades, making her one of the most influential and groundbreaking figures in the history of women's wrestling.  You can find my resources in the show notes.

Mary was born on July 22, 1933, in Kershaw, South Carolina, and grew up in Tookiedoo, 12 miles from Columbia. She was the youngest of five children, Ellison was the only daughter of Henry Lee and Suzann Atkinson Ellison.

When her mother died of cancer, eight-year-old Ellison went to live with her paternal grandmother and worked on her cousin's cotton farm to make money. At age 10, she was still deeply distraught over her mother's death; to cheer her up, her father took her to the local wrestling matches. She liked the matches, but it was not until she saw Women's Champion Mildred Burke wrestle that they began to mean much more to her.

Episode 49: Emma Koehler- Brewess of San Antonio10 Jan 202501:04:33

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!  Happy New Year everyone.  This is the first episode for our 2025 season!

Today I want to introduce Emma Bentzen Koehler.  Emma Bentzen Koehler, was an entrepreneur and president of the San Antonio Brewing Association, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 25, 1858 to her parents, Ulrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bentzen and Helene Henriette Sophie (Garrels) Bentzen.  Her parents emigrated from Hanover Germany to St. Louis during the late 1830s. Her mother died in 1860 from heart disease at the age of 48.  Her father would go on to marry Marianna Bertha Wiebe in 1862. During her childhood in St. Louis, she and her siblings participated in German-American cultural events and associations, including the turnverein movement. A Turnverein is a gymnastic or athletic club that originated in Germany in 1811. The term comes from the German words turnen, which means "to practice gymnastics," and Verein, which means "club, union".  Her father would pass away in 1882 at the age of 76.  Emma's early years in the U.S. were shaped by her immigrant experience, learning the value of hard work, cultural adaptation, and business acumen.

Episode 46: The Original Pink Ladies- Lady Pinkertons Part 429 Nov 202400:17:07

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!  This is our 4th and final episode for our Pink Ladies series.  Today I want to tell you about a lesser known Lady Pink named Elizabeth H Baker.  It is not known when Elizabeth H. Baker was born the exact date and location of her birth remain uncertain. She was raised in a period when women’s roles were often confined to the domestic sphere, but she defied these limitations through her education and her determination to make a difference in society. Baker pursued higher education at a time when women’s access to academic institutions was limited. She attended a leading women’s college, where she developed an early passion for social reform and the empowerment of women.

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!

This is part 3 of our Pink Ladies series.  Mary Louvestre was an African-American Union spy in Norfolk, Virginia, during the United States Civil War. She delivered details of plans for the conversion of the wrecked USS Merrimack to an ironclad that would be named the CSS Virginia and which represented a great advance in Confederate naval capabilities.  While she was not an official Pinkerton Lady, I feel she did the work of a Pink Lady and deserves to be highlighted in this series.

Episode 71: Petticoat Ranger- The Life of Doris Elizabeth Brown Wheeler14 Nov 202500:29:47

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom.

Today’s story is about a woman I stumbled upon in my research about someone else.  I found this woman interesting and deserving of her own episode rather than a highlight in someone else’s.  Here is the back story of how I found Doris.  I found a list of names I made 3 years ago.  My list contained the names and links to the 11 confirmed murders the Barrow Gang committed.  Bonnie and Clyde were credited with killing many more people than they should have.

I will tell you the story of a young widow who carried her husband’s gun, wore his badge, and changed what it meant to be a Texas Ranger.

Her name… was Doris Elizabeth Brown Wheeler.

Doris was believed to be the last surviving widow of the infamous bank robbers' victims.

Thanks for joining us at our breakfast table.  Please leave us a rating and review any where you listen to our little show, it really helps us to reach new ears.

As we mentioned in our last episode we will be highlighting the female Pinkerton Detectives.  Today is dedicated to Hattie Lawton.  Hattie was Pinkerton’s second — and often called the best — female detective. Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!

The next few episodes of Breakfast with Mom we will highlight the first female Pinkerton detectives.  Today is dedicated to the very first woman to be hired by Allan Pinkerton and one that would be a lifelong friend of Allen’s.  She was even buried in his family plot.

Kate Warne was an American law enforcement officer best known as the first female detective in the United States, for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency.  She also had a role in uncovering the 1861 Baltimore Plot against President-elect Abraham Lincoln, recruiting female agents for the Pinkerton Agency, and conducting intelligence work for the Union during the American Civil War.  My resources can be found in the show notes.

Episode 42: Diving Girl Sonora Webster04 Oct 202401:02:29

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!

The history of diving girls is a fascinating chapter in the world of entertainment and athleticism, dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Diving girls, also known as "high divers" or "swan divers," were performers who specialized in diving from great heights into small bodies of water, often while riding horses or performing acrobatics.

The practice gained popularity in the context of Wild West shows and traveling circuses in the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s. These shows, which featured a blend of Western-themed entertainment, stunt performances, and feats of skill, captivated audiences across the country. Diving girls added an element of daring and spectacle to these shows, often performing alongside cowboys, sharpshooters, and other skilled performers.

Episode 39: Elizabeth Cochran aka Nellie Bly 23 Aug 202400:24:12

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom.  Today I want to tell you about a female journalist from the mid- 19th century.

Nellie Bly, born Elizabeth Jane Cochran on May 5, 1864, in Cochran's Mills, Pennsylvania to Michael Cochran and Mary Jane Kennedy.  She was one of 15 children in her family, and her father was a wealthy landowner and businessman.  Bly attended boarding school for a time but had to return home due to financial difficulties after her father's death.

She became one of the most influential journalists and social reformers of her time. Her career was marked by daring investigative reporting and a fierce commitment to exposing social injustices.

Early in her career, Nellie adopted the pen name "Nellie Bly" after a popular Stephen Foster song. Her journalism journey began in 1885 when she wrote a fiery letter to the editor of the Pittsburgh Dispatch in response to an article titled "What Girls Are Good For."

Episode 34: Fasting Girls14 Jun 202401:24:57

*****TRIGGER WARNING*****

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom

Today we are going to discuss a phenomenon that occurred in the 19th century commonly referred to as “Fasting Girls”.  Please note this episode makes reference to eating disorders and mental illness, if these topics are triggering please feel free to skip this episode.  All my resources can be found in the show notes.

The term "fasting girls" refers to a phenomenon observed primarily in the 19th century where young girls or women claimed to be able to survive for long periods without eating. These cases garnered significant attention from both medical professionals and the public, often sparking debates about the nature of human physiology, spirituality, and social dynamics.

Several famous cases emerged during this time, such as that of Sarah Jacob in Wales, who claimed not to have eaten for several years. Another well-known case was that of Mollie Fancher, also known as the "Brooklyn Enigma," who claimed to have gone without food for extended periods.

Episode 32: Gustav Klimt and his art stolen by the Nazis 17 May 202400:41:44

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!

Today I want to tell you about Gustav Klimt, and the story of his stolen art.

Gustav was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent figures in the Vienna Secession movement. Born on July 14, 1862, in Baumgarten, near Vienna, Austria, Gustav demonstrated artistic talent from a young age. He studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, where he was trained in architectural painting and decorative arts.

One of Gustav's most famous paintings, "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I," was at the center of one of the most notable art thefts and restitution cases in history. The Portrait is an oil painting on canvas, with gold leaf.  The painting was commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, a wealthy industrialist and Adele Bloch-Bauer's husband; the painting was completed sometime in 1907.

During World War II, when Austria was occupied by Nazi Germany, the painting, along with other valuable artworks, was seized from the Bloch-Bauer family by the Nazis. After the war, the painting ended up in the possession of the Austrian government. It was displayed in the Austrian Gallery Belvedere in Vienna for many years.

Episode 30: Titanic Survivors19 Apr 202401:02:07

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!   This is the 112 anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic.  I won’t bore you with the story of the Titanic but I do want to give a brief summary of the Titanic story just in case there are some out there that have been living under a rock their whole life- the luxury liner RMS Titanic, launched on May 31, 1911, and set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton en route to New York City on April 10, 1912, with 2,240 passengers and crew on board. On April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg, Titanic broke apart and sank to the bottom of the ocean, taking with it the lives of more than 1,500 passengers and crew.  On board were some of the world’s richest people, JP Morgan, John Jacob Astor IV, Margaret Brown and Isidor Straus, co-owner of Macy's, and his wife, Ida just to name a few.

I will not be telling you about them, instead I wanted to highlight a party of 4 women traveling together in cabins B-3, B-5 and E-10.  These women would survive on lifeboat 2.

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!

This episode contains content related to domestic abuse as both physical and sexual assault.  Some may find this triggering, please listen at your own risk.

On March 9, 1977 Francine Hughes stood outside her Michigan home, watching it burn. Inside was her abusive husband, Mickey. Earlier that night, he had beaten and raped her for the last time. She stood watching the fire, then turned and entered the car where three of her children cowered in fear. Then she drove herself to authorities and turned herself in.  Little did she know that in a few short years there would be a book and movie about this night.  A book would be released in 1980 and a made for TV movie would later be released in 1984.

Episode 22: Yes, Virginia There is a Santa Claus!29 Dec 202300:58:36

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!  We are going to conclude our Christmas series.  Today’s Christmas story takes place in New York City 1897.  I found this story when I watched the 2009 movie on Netflix.  I’m sure some of our listeners have seen the movie’s thumbnail while surfing Netflix for a Christmas movie but may not know it was based on a true story.

Laura Virginia O'Hanlon was born on July 20, 1889, in New York City, to Philip F. O'Hanlon, a surgeon who also worked as a coroner for the New York City Police Department, and Laura Lincoln O'Hanlon.

In 1897, Virginia asked her father whether Santa Claus existed. His answer did not convince her, and she decided to pose the question to the New York newspaper The Sun.  Sources conflict over whether her father suggested writing the letter or she elected to on her own.  In her letter, Virginia wrote that her father had told her, "If you see it in The Sun it's so."  Virginia later told The Sun that her father thought the newspaper would be "too busy" to respond to her question and had said, "Write if you want to," but not to be disappointed if she did not get a response.
