Can we prioritise the urgent need to teach young people, especially those from the care system, about consent. And that with the right support and guidance there is hope at the end of the tunnel.

If you are interested in how we can heal even after a traumatic childhood, listen to my guest this week, Hope Daniels, Sunday Times bestselling author who describes in her latest book This isn’t Love, how she went from living with alcoholic parents to a chaotic childhood in care with sexual abuse from an older man, to addiction in adulthood, until she turned it around in therapy and now advocates for young people in care & a safer system for them to grow up in.

Hope shares her experiences and advocates for a better world in which children who are under the care of the state can trust that they will be safe from abuse and sexual exploitation.

Hope shows us that no matter what we have experienced in the past, when we get the right support we can heal and in turn, go on to stand up for the rights of all.

Ungluing where you're stuck, with the Collage Coaching Technique Founder Andrea Watts08 Aug 202200:38:06

Send us a text

Andrea Watts is the author of Collage as a Creative Coaching Tool and creator of The Collage Coaching Technique™ an arts-based approach to coaching that reconnects you to your inner wisdom and is a powerful way to get unstuck as you explore and express the hidden experiences and mindsets that influence how you feel, think, and behave.

From a work perspective, Covid meant she had to take her coaching practice and training online, this caused her to find a creative way to transition the Collage Coaching Technique online.

It's not surprising she ended up with a creative business. She was a child who enjoyed making things and playing a lot. She was always very curious and wanted to know how things worked. She’s one of 4 children, and the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica. She was brought up in a Christian home and her faith and spirituality remain important to her.

Motherhood was her biggest adventure in her early adulthood. Teaching and learning from her daughter, playing and being creative with her. She loved it. She stayed at home with her for 2 years before getting employment.

Her last paid job was where she experienced the biggest challenge, because she was becoming more aware of what she found fulfilling. Being unable to do this affected her wellbeing and identity, so she went to see a careers coach.

Following working with the coach she decided to start her own business, which evolved into coaching with collage. She’s developed this into a 3-stage technique names the Collage Coaching Technique. It's very different from vision barding. Instead of being future focused it looks at where you are stuck now and helping you transition to a better state of wellbeing.

Her vision is to see it being used as a creative coaching tool for releasing people’s potential globally. Her coaching practice positively impacts her clients and helps to create the changes they want to see. She trains other coaches so am making an impact by introducing a new tool to the coaching profession. While not intentionally, she’s aware that her work inspires others and encourages them to use creative approaches in coaching.

Thanks so much Andrea for sharing this creative collage technique that anyone can use to gain real insights into where they’re stuck and what they really want from life. Thanks also for showing us how to use fo

Smashing it! The art of getting what you want with Alison Edgar MBE01 Aug 202200:35:59

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Alison Edgar MBE known as the ‘The Entrepreneurs Godmother’ helping businesses and entrepreneurs to grow, including The Apprentice & Dragons Den winners with their businesses. She is also the author of bestselling book SMASH IT! The art of getting what you want.

Instead of sitting around during the pandemic, she decided to embrace the lockdown and write her best-selling book ‘SMASH IT! The Art of Getting What YOU Want’, which helped grow the her own business to new levels!

Leaving home at 19, she had a plan to travel the world for 6 months. She loved travelling so much that she moved to Cape town at 21 and before she knew it 6 months had turned into 6 years.

Having her two sons was a game changer for her. Her first birth was very traumatic, and she nearly lost her life. Thankfully, after three months she got better and was discharged from hospital. This made her rethink the direction of her life and made her crave a change.

Leaving her corporate job – and her comfort zone - at 46 years old, she decided it was time for a new direction. She set up her first business ‘Sales Coaching Solutions’ and gave it her all. She realised that she had a passion for helping businesses and entrepreneurs to grow so a few years after this she set up ‘The Entrepreneurs Godmother’ and helped many people including The Apprentice & Dragons Den winners with their businesses.

Fast forward to 2022 and she runs two businesses, ‘SMASH IT! Training’ and ‘Alison Edgar MBE – Keynote Speaker’. Both businesses are designed to help others in different aspects of their lives. SMASH IT! Training helps teams to flourish with contemporary training and coaching. We offer commination training, leadership training, sales training and much more.  Alison Edgar MBE - Keynote Speaker offers motivational speaking at events to help inspire and invigorate audiences of teams or entrepreneurs.

She defines courage as the ability to not be afraid to fail. So many people fear change due to the risk of failing, but in reality, it is our only constant. Change is the only thing that we can guarantee will happen to us throughout our lives, so why live in fear of it? Not fearing change and learning to embrace it is one of the most courageous things that you can do.

Thanks Alison for inspiring entrepreneurs and business owners to get the

Optimizing your brain with Founder Portia Asli25 Jul 202200:35:08

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Portia Asli, a licensed engineer and founder of Optimyzed Brain. She helps entrepreneurs optimize their brains for high-performance using a science-based method that supports people to prioritize their brain health and empower them with actionable ways to increase their mental performance for success in business.

Founding Optimyzed Brain Portia  went from a small offline consulting practice to building and launching a global-based business during the pandemic, helping company leaders optimize their brain health for peak mental performance, engineering a step-by-step science-based system that improves sleep, energy levels, concentration, focus, and mental clarity, less work hours and more more quality time.

Portia emigrated at the age of 10 with her family from Iran to Canada. Hard-working immigrant parents role modelled strong work ethics in her  but also being a woman immigrant in North America provided the freedom that didn't exist in Iran and this was the motivation to seize the opportunity to travel, explore and discover how she could create a positive global impact

She went to a top University and worked hard but burn out and depression during her rigorous engineering studies began a 15-year journey of studying how our lifestyle and behaviour impacts our brain performance.

Now she helps driven senior leaders to achieve great heights by helping them optimize their brains for peak mental performance through science-based micro behavioural and lifestyle improvements.

When striving for success brain health & mental performance can take the back seat.  This can show up as stress, anxiety, overwhelm, brain fog, exhaustion, imposter syndrome, insomnia, procrastination, and low self-confidence. She is helping senior leaders improve their sleep, and nutrition, reduce stress and anxiety, enhance mental clarity and focus in less than five weeks.

Thanks Portia for sharing how you have developed ways to help people to optimise their own natural abilities so that they can be their most effective, productive and happy. And also for showing us that we can find ways to optimise our brain so we aren’t running on empty but instead, living and working in a balanced and fruitful way.

Combating taboo subjects in women's health with founder Lina Chan18 Jul 202200:31:07

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Lina Chan. She had a stillbirth, a miscarriage & trouble conceiving. The impact it had on her physically and emotionally was tremendous, so she founded Parla, a Femtech Start-Up platform & community by women for women that changes the conversation around fertility. Parla was recently acquired by Holland & Barrett.

Born and raised in Brazil, by Chinese Immigrant parents Lina learned about resilience, hard work and optimism by watching how they thrived through their hardship. She loved to travel,  exploring new cultures, being outdoors & active. She got her education and worked hard through her career.

Then came her baby loss when she was 6 months pregnant. It was devastating, not least because there was no where to turn to, no one she could find to talk to who understood her pain. No community, no women's heath care support.

Lina's experience informed her next moves. She would create a platform that would provide the support, expertise, and community that she had found missing.

Her mission was to build a better health and wellbeing journey for women around the world.  Her company Parla was born.

So much of women's health is shrouded in taboo which means women systematically have poorer health and wellbeing outcomes.  There is so much we can do to close this gap and it is Lina's determination to do just that.

Now with two daughters she is even more motivated to created a better future for women and their healthcare. She wants them to grow up in a world that they don't have to be ashamed about their periods, infertility, miscarriage or menopause.

She sees courage as believing that you can do hard things!  Trusting yourself and reducing the self-critical voice that can be ever present.  Knowing that even if things don't go your way, you'll learn from it, you'll become stronger and more resilient!

Thank you so much Lina for sharing your journey of infertility & loss, and for making other women feel less alone, and helping them to see that from difficult situations you can find strength and purpose.

And thanks too for showing us that when we are empowered to have access to care & understanding of our bodies we can demand the help we need & we can create a world where there is better healthcare for women, at every stage of life.

Creating a fab future beyond the booze with Radio 2 DJ & Sober Club founder Janey Lee Grace11 Jul 202200:43:25

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Janey Lee Grace, bestselling author of Happy Healthy Sober and the Imperfectly Natural series. Formerly a singer and now DJ on Radio 2, Janey is founder of The Sober Club and is a coach and media trainer for those wanting to find clarity and vision and then looking to package it & send it out into the world in a way that will make people listen.

Born in Nottingham, Janey knew she wanted out of the kind of life that was expected for her. She knew she wanted to a singer and as soon as she could she launched into doing nightclubs and singing for a covers band. Her ambitions were higher than that and soon she was working as a backing singer and eventually with a quick turnaround formed a vocal set and got the gig working for Wham!

It was a work hard play hard culture but not so much for Janey. She didn't have the family back-up to let herself lose control and that kept her from doing drugs. However she was still searching for something else and she went down the road of exploring every alternative health option there was out there. Anything but give up the booze. Which characteristically wasn't out of control. It was what was considered 'normal'.

But normal kept not feeling good. And in January 2018 Janey took the plunge and went sober. What she discovered what that once you'd got  through the adjustments, life was a whole lot more fabulous.

She was inspired to help others on their sober journeys and founded The Sober Club. Having a community is vital in navigating a world which heavily revolves around alcohol. But with Janey's help and the community support more people are able to take those courageous steps.

Thanks so much Janey for encouraging and supporting people wherever they are on their sober curious or sober committed journey, and for showing how important and exciting it is to be part of a community who are all headed on a similar path.

And thanks too for showing us that if we choose to go sober, that we don’t have to go it alone.

How to come to terms with loss with Grief Recovery Specialist Kirsten Wallentin04 Jul 202200:42:10

Send us a text

This week's guest is Kirsten Wallentin, a certified Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist and author of the book “When Dad Dies”. In 2016 her husband was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease for which life expectancy is 2-3 years. Her husband passed away only 18 months later leaving Kirsten a widow with two young daughters.

In the beginning, her children were frightened as they heard people would die from Covid – and after losing their father, they were worried if she could get sick and die as well. As a family they chose to come & live in UK. It has given them chance to face their grief more fully.

Kirsten had a calm, happy childhood with lots of friends, and felt very carefree and self-reliant. Growing up she traveled, spent a time in advertising before becoming an IT consultant.

In 2016 her husband was diagnosed with MND. They way it showed up for him was more internal so the doctors, Kirsten and the girls weren't aware how bad things were getting for him. After 18 months he died suddenly, leaving his family feeling cheated and grieving their  terrible loss.

Kirsten had struggled to find help and advice from those who were going through the same as her so she decided to write a book and become a grief recovery specialist. Helping others , as well as herself and her girls, has given her a sense of meaning purpose.

Thank you so much Kirsten for the courage you have shown in taking your own experience of grief and turning that into a way of helping children and parents going through grief and into recovery. Thanks also for showing us that when those times of grief come to us, there are ways to help us into recovery and beyond.

Mending your mind & body with Mindful Pilates teacher Bev Densham27 Jun 202200:35:58

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Beverley Densham, a Mindfulness Pilates teacher of nearly 24 years, award winning, bestselling Author of I Talk to Angels, founder of the Happy Kids Cards for children & Happy & Calm cards & has been featured in the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Daily Express, YOU Magazine, Woman Magazine, Spirit & Destiny magazine & BBC radio

Beverley's story has led her doing what she does now and it is all the more powerful for the journey that has taken her here.

During the Pandemic she lost her brother Rich when he died suddenly one night. Grief is tough at the best of times but the pandemic made it even harder. They had been very close as children but Rich suffered with Bipolar Disorder and the fallout from that was that Bev had to keep her distance somewhat, so they had grown apart over time.

But as children with their two other siblings it had been a pretty idyllic, happy, simple life. However despite that Bev found it very hard to communicate, and that only got more difficult, as she grew older and went off to University.

After that though she seemed to get into her stride, as a free spirit travelling and learning Pilates on the beach in Sydney. But her happiness was short-lived. One day while cycling to work she was smashed into by a car and thrown to the tarmac.

Her physical injuries were bad and the pain was intense but it was the emotional trauma that overshadowed her as she tried to heal.

She suffered suffered post traumatic stress, panic attacks, depression and chronic fatigue. But after a few unsuccessful attempts at therapy she found someone who helped forgive the woman who had crashed into her, and that put her on the road to recovery.

That was when she started her mindful pilates practice, helping people be strong in mind, body and business, and ultimately to be happy and have the tools to empower them everyday.

She believes that courage is an inner determination, a light shining within that you can’t blow out and will help you through anything no matter what.

Thanks so much Beverley for sharing how you have overcome adversity and created a toolbox for people that they can use as a daily practice to face the challenges of life and embrace the blessings. Thanks also for showing us that by using our bodies, minds and spirituality we can live full lives in each moment n

Not everything is rainbows & unicorns, says The Brain Lady Julie Anderson20 Jun 202200:38:31

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Julie Anderson, otherwise known as The Brain Lady. She has studied natural health, psychology, psychoneuro-immunology & the field of brain personality connection. With further specialism in depression, anxiety disorders and brain function, she helps us to discover our own personal brainprint, & how to make the most of it.

Julie explains what a brainprint is, and how, after the two years we have all had we can use our brains to help us recover and build resilience for whatever is ahead.

Julie was the middle girl of 5 daughters with an alcoholic abusive father was jailed for manufacturing meth-amphetamine, but she was always a positive child and understood that his problem was his problem and not hers.

However she had a car accident at the age of 18 and the chiropractor who was meant to be healing her was a sexual predator, and it took her a couple of years to recover. With her faith and training herself in self-care, she overcame the trauma, keen to not remain haunted by the man.

She became very interested in the brain and studied psychoneuroimmunology and the effect that our thoughts, stressors and traumas can have on the physical health of our bodies. She's not talking about toxic positivity and pretending everything is rainbows and unicorns, but about learning solid techniques for keeping our minds healthy and therefore our bodies.

She says that our brains hear every thought and that it is our responsibility to manage our thoughts so that we maintain our brains in a good condition. It is important not to compare ourselves with others and it is imperative that we understand that we each have our own unique challenges and therefore our courage is unique to us too.

Thanks Julie for taking us on deep dive into our brains and how they can work for us and not against us, and thanks also for showing us how we can make the most of our own unique brain personalities no matter the circumstances we find ourselves in.

In 2020 Margaret did a project that changed her. It was  a video series about regenerative agriculture in Hawaii. It made her rethink how she was living and she decided to start her own small vegetable plot with her nieces.

At 17, she had left Hong Kong and moved to Los Angeles to study design and animation- it was freeing yet challenging, because her internal belief system wasn’t yet matching her purpose. But as her artistic sense evolved so did her consciousness.

After watching the film Before The Flood by Fisher Stevens, the Climate Crisis really hit home for her and she started to look at ways that she could communicate creatively about climate solutions.

After a few years working as a freelancer she decided to create her own film studio. But first she joined a women's entrepreneurship class so that she approached her business Studio SAKA with a business head.

Now she does design, animation, and creative direction at Studio SAKA, all with the environment, sustainability and climate solutions front of mind.

Over time she has become someone who is able to embrace fear, not letting fear hinder her but rather turning fear into a drive and motivation to keep moving forward.

Thanks so much Margaret for channelling your creativity for climate change and helping others see how they can make a difference too.

Thanks also for showing us that wherever we’re at we can all make the incremental changes that are needed to help save our planet.

Do life with your whole heart says young onset Parkinson's campaigner Jo Yaldren06 Jun 202200:40:24

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Jo Yaldren, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 47. She practices the Hoffman Process which helps her as she seeks to receive treatment and advocate for the charity Parkinson’s UK who state that Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world.

The last two years have gone by at a time when her when symptoms have been ok. But in terms pf the pandemic and her Parkinson's she feels she had already had come to terms with mortality and illusion of control.

Eldest of three girls, she had a very close family,  and amazing friends. Her parents divorced and when she was with her father it was a case of benign neglect.

When she left home and set out int to the world she was determined to live a rich life and her then bucket list was done by the time she reached 28. Then she became Nurse and a teacher...

Receiving an early onset Parkinson's diagnosis rocked her world. She'd gone to the doctor with some signature signs and the doctor confirmed that it was indeed PD.

She had previously been studying the Hoffman Process and that helped her through the diagnosis, and the catastrophic disruption to her life.

She kept her purpose simple: be a good mum and to look after local beach, but it was when she went on to raise awareness of Parkinson's through sharing her story that felt she had a mission.

To help raise profile of Parkinson's she has appeared on a new Parkinson's UK TV series on the topic. as they follow her on her journey to find out if she can have Deep Brain Stimulation.

The jury is still out on that one.

Thanks Jo for being so open about your journey with Parkinson’s and for helping to raise awareness about this condition. We look forward to seeing the film about you on Parkinson’s UK.

Thank you also for showing us how to face the toughest of challenges by examining the major influences on our lives, tracing the root of the adopted negativity, and releasing any pain, grief, anger, shame or resentment that has been stored there.

Going deep for your mental health with freediver & breathing expert Helena Bourdillon30 May 202200:45:40

Send us a text

Warning this episode speaks about depression, and suicide ideation. If you are affected by these issues please seek help, support or contact https://www.thecalmzone.net/

This week’s guest is Helena Bourdillon, a Breath trainer, free-diver and mental health advocate. 22 years ago she was on the verge of suicide. She survived & triumphed over chronic depression & now freedives to depths of -76m.  With 7 National Records for depth, she has represented Great Britain at the World Championships four times.

Helena was kept out of the water for the last couple of years due to covid so she has focused on her own & others' therapeutic journeys, using breath-work, at a time when many people were feeling  loneliness, anxiety and depression. For some this was a new feeling, for others the pandemic exacerbated the condition.

From a young age Helena had suffered with depression and at a certain point realised she was experiencing suicide ideation. Always a lover of water, it was when she experienced free-diving that she felt for the first time, what it was like for the chatter in her head to quieten down and to feel a deep relaxation.

It was when she did a crowd funding video to help her go the 2017 Freediving Depth World Championships that she talked openly about her depression for the first time. She wanted to dive deeper because the deeper she went, the more of a platform she would have to tell and show people what was possible: that life is worth living and worth fighting for.

The breath work sessions she now does are geared towards helping people who suffer with anxiety and panic attacks as well as helping people who suffer with Long Covid etc

Some days it is just making it out of bed.  But being true to yourself and what you need takes courage, and each intentional breath you take can help you get to the next step.

Thanks so much Helena for being so open about suicide and chronic depression and for daring to inspire others by diving deeper, breathing better, and learning to live happier.

Thanks also for showing us that our breath is our best friend and that by using it well we can live better, deeper, more fulfilling lives.

Blowing up on Tik Tok by helping women over 40 get fit, strong & empowered, with Niki Wibrow23 May 202200:41:02

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Niki Wibrow, Celebrity Personal Trainer, Fitness, Yoga and Nutrition Expert and Radio Personality. Having Over 30 Years Experience In The Health & Fitness Industry, she is now focused on women over 40 and is a menopause specialist with over 4 million tik tok views.

During the pandemic, the fitness world was badly affected by not having real life interaction with clients but did quickly learn to take everything online. Client by client Niki started to discover that she could train them via zoom, doing the workouts wherever they could find a quiet space in their homes.

Then she realised she could scale that up with her social media following and she built out from her 404040 programme by doing videos on IGTV and Youtube.

As a child she was always talking and moving and dancing, and as she went into her teen years she got more focused on her movement, despite the backdrop of the difficult divorce of her parents.

On leaving home she didn't pursue her dream but instead went from job to job, pay check to pay check, and weekend to weekend. It was a chance fitness class that Niki attended that changed her outlook. This was a different approach to exercise at that time, and she was hooked. She trained and started teaching.

As she herself got older she began to notice changes in her body in spite of her high level of fitness. And from her own experience she decided to focus on older women and become a Menopause specialist.

Taking her expertise online attracted 4 million views on Tik Tok and in this way she is impacting the women she wants reach across the globe.

She believes getting older doesn't have to mean giving up on yourself, but instead, having the courage to stand up and be counted.

Thanks Nikki for working tirelessly to bring health and fitness to women in a way that is manageable and achievable for everyone, so that we can all fulfil our physical potential no matter what age or starting point we are at.

Thanks also for showing us older women to build muscle and flexibility in our bodies so that we may live stronger for longer.

Learning the wisdom of prescription cannabis with Dr Callie Seaman16 May 202200:31:34

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Dr Callie Seaman, founder of Aqualabs Ltd, a liquid hydroponic fertilizer solution manufacturer, who also works within the legal cannabis sector with a licenced producer. She’s an active campaigner, educator & medical cannabis user, as well as director of MedCan which supports those with neurological conditions needing to use cannabis.

In last 3 years Callie has been working with a number of licensed cultivators of cannabis in the UK and internationally, pushing for support for those with chronic conditions to be able to readily acquire prescription cannabis. Because of her own background she is committed to campaigning for change in how cannabis is viewed and accessed.

Callie's Dad was a drug dealer. She had epileptic seizures at 15 but her Dad was forward thinking enough to introduce her to cannabis to help control the fits.

Later at Sheffield she completed her degree & worked for the local hydroponic shop, Aquaculture. Her passion for growing plants grew & she taught lots of people how to grow cannabis, some very sick people & she helped many to understand the benefits of cannabis.

More recently she had stopped taking cannabis but her seizures began again with a near death experience in car, with her 17 yr old son. She lost her driving license. She started to attend meetings about medical cannabis and began to get a real understanding of how cannabis can help seizures.

In November 2018, the law changed in the UK so that cannabis could be prescribed and she started working with a licensed cultivator in the north west of the UK, becoming a director of one of only 4 licences in the UK.

She set up Medcam to help families navigate the journey with cannabis based medical products- as well as being on the advisory board for PLEA and help patients to understand cannabis better. Later she published a book; a diary for medical cannabis users to record their consumption & be able to reflect on what works for them.

Now she continues to educate the masses on the science of cannabis and remove the stigma associated with consuming cannabis & doing more research on the plant itself, focusing on trichomes and improving on the quality of prescription cannabis.

Thanks so much Callie for sharing your own story of how medical cannabis has helped not just your own epilepsy, but also those with

Designing your life & environment in a sustainable way, with Dee Gibson02 May 202200:33:45

Send us a text

My guest this week is Dee Gibson, a London based, residential interior designer with nearly 20 years of experience working with private, residential clients and focusing on whole house refurbishments and extensions. In 2018, Dee opened Kalukanda House, a boutique hotel in Sri Lanka which she designed and built. But life wasn’t always how she designed it to be.

Dee started out doing engineering followed by accountancy, but it wasn't where her heart was, and after the accountancy firm she worked for (a top 5 global practice over 100 years old) went under, and friend died, she decided to do a life makeover.

She retrained in Interior design and found what she was looking for. This is what she was meant to be doing. She built her practice and developed her style. She kept this message at the centre of her work “ How can I make people happy, add value and leave a positive impact?”

She thinks about a space differently, sources ethically, the longevity of a scheme, and how it can benefit communities. She joined the BIID sustainability committee in order to help drive thinking and build sustainable policies, & business contributes to a charity in Sri Lanka empowering abused women and girls through safe housing and education.

It is in her homeland of Sri Lanka that she also built another dream: Kalukanda House, a boutique hotel that reflected her values of design and ecological responsibility. They encourage conscious travellers with an adventurous spirit, creatives who are looking for rest and inspiration and anybody looking for a place to entirely unhook and enjoy time feeling empowered in nature.

Hip Hotel Member - also featured in top 5 "slow travel destinations" for 2020. Finalist in the "Best New Business" category of the UK wide Best Women in Business Awards 2019.

They have have hosted retreats, writers crafting TV shows, entrepreneurs launching businesses and families enjoying time together amongst others.

And back in UK she has co-founded Hera Leadership with programmes for working women to action career change with a focus on mind, body & business.

Thanks so much Dee for helping us to understand how we too can be more creative in the way we design our lives and the environment we build around us. Thanks also for showing

A New Era with Downton Abbey TV Drama & Film Producer Liz Trubridge25 Apr 202200:33:58

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Liz Trubridge, producer of Downton Abbey, the most successful British Drama export of all time & Winner of a Primetime Emmy, a Bafta, a Golden Globe & the Producers Guild of America Award. Downton Abbey the movie hit the No 1 spot in both UK & US on it’s opening weekend; more recently followed by the movie release of 'Downtown Abbey: A New Era'

During the pandemic the film industry was hugely disrupted - and yet Liz and her team managed to make this latest movie under all the covid restrictions without losing a single day.

Liz grew up passionate about stories, and make believe plays, and envisioned a future where she might somehow live making those scripts come to life.

After leaving University she went into TV- as a young women in a predominantly male world, but managed to find strong female mentors and guides.

Nevertheless as she worked her way through the ranks there were inevitably challenges to face and slowly she found ways to help herself, mentally, spiritually & emotionally, to overcome whatever faced her with equilibrium and understanding.

After she collaborated with Julian Fellows on her first feature From Time to Time, she was given the opportunity to produce what was to become 6 ward-winning series of Downton Abbey and now two movies.

Her drive through it all has been to create very human and relatable stories, and it is no wonder then that Downton Abbey has had such phenomenal success with huge popularity across the world.

Downton Abbey - A New Era arrives on the silver screen as a timely and much needed up-lifting experience after two years of a global pandemic.

And now Liz is producing a film about the Lockerbie plane bombing; a heart breaking tale of Jim Swire's loss of his daughter in the disaster, and his consequent search for the truth, but ultimately with love at the heart of the film.

In the meantime thank you so much Liz for bringing us a slice of another era that reminds us of our humanity, and need for community, love and connection, no matter what period of time or social strata we are born into, or which side our bread is buttered.

Thanks also for showing us that trusting in our life’s purpose and taking action in that direction will lead us to where we are meant to be.

Finding your true you with author of 'Purpose' Jessica Huie MBE18 Apr 202200:37:18

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Jessica Huie MBE, author of bestseller, Purpose, one of the top ten business books according to The Independent. From single mum to jet-setting journalist & publicist to the stars to labelled one of Britain’s Most Inspiring Entrepreneurs by the Evening Standard, she found her purpose, helping others to find theirs by stripping back to meet themselves.

The pandemic catalysed a move to Jamaica with her 9 yr old son & that leap of faith inspired 5 further chapters of Jessica's latest book Purpose.

After growing up in dysfunctional childhood, Jessica became a teen mum living in a hostel on benefits having left home at 17 with 4 GCSEs. But work & achievement became her driver and she created a glittering career in PR followed by a successful business in multi-cultural occasion cards.

However it was when her father was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2016 that she became present for the first time and experienced what she came to understand to be a spiritual awakening.

Having found her own sense of self, she realised it was her destiny  to help others to find their purpose too. And The Purpose Academy and The Purpose Retreat were born.

Her vision for the future is one where we are brave enough to live lives which are the truest expression of who we are. Once we do that, all of our social problems will take care of themselves.

She believes we must be willing to feel our feelings. That’s the starting place for living our purpose.

Thanks so much Jessica for sharing how you dared to live your best life which went from outward success to inner understanding, and embracing a fundamentally holistic purpose-driven life moving forwards.

Thanks also for showing us how to find the courage to look beneath the surface and find out what we really want to be and do with our lives.

Books that build your brand with publisher Lucy McCarraher11 Apr 202200:35:40

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Lucy McCarraher, co-founder of the Hybrid publishing house Rethink Press & author of 12 books including A Book of One’s Own – a manifesto for women to share their expertise and make a difference. She helps you write & publish a book that will transform your business whilst creating a realisable work/life integration.

Book publishing has done well during the pandemic; perhaps because people were more focused, or had more time on their hands, or at least time to reflect on what they have become experts in and now wanted to share.

Lucy was always passionate about books and after a winding career in performance, TV and magazines in Australia, having two sons, going through a divorce, she returned to the UK.

Writing several books herself, she eventually teamed up with Joe Gregory to create Rethink Press, a hybrid publisher that positions people as experts and their books as their calling cards. As well as setting up a coaching and mentoring side to the business Lucy also established the Business Book Awards, which, over time she and her team have ensured have become fully representative across all categories.

Thank you so much Lucy for championing women and helping them bring their expertise, experience, positive impact and influence to the world so that we start to read more nuanced and diverse books that reflect the lives we live and the businesses we run.

Thanks also for showing us that even in our busy lives we can carve out space to write and share our books for the benefit of others.

Aysha Scott is the founder & CEO of A Scott Productions. She embarked on her journey into filmmaking after discovering a gap in the market for black female characters during her career as an actress. During a difficult time in her life, when she was left to raise her 10 week old son alone, she took the plunge to become an independent filmmaker.

Pandemic has been a big reset for her- the film industry stopped overnight, film festivals went online, but Aysha put Dismissed, her anti-bullying film on You tube, and it went viral.

Working creatively on message and issue based work finds its roots in her background in which she grew up as one of 6 children to a single mum, living in Deptford in what was called The Ghetto.  She was in a gang until she realised she could choose another path, and she took herself off to college.

She set up a music and entertainment company Artistquik with a grant from The Prince’s Trust and won young entrepreneur of the year award from the Black Women in Business Awards. Then she retrained as an actress, working in film, TV & theatre as well as recitals of hard-hitting message-based poetry.

But time and again she found herself typecast in the same old roles. With a new baby and abandoned by the dad, she went back to college to do a creative writing degree and that's when she found her true voice.

She founded A Scott Productions to explore social impact, exploring topics and themes such as domestic violence, gun crime, absent fathers, anti-bullying, child abuse; reflecting stories on the screen of people's experiences who are normally underrepresented, & opening the lid on issues often hidden away.

She has many messages and stories to share with the world, and in any way that she can make a difference in the world, she will use the power of her words to do so. She believes in being your authentic self, doing what you love, and following your dreams no matter what hurdles you face.

Thanks so much Aysha, for sharing the challenges you have faced, and how you have turned them round to create work that reflects social issues that need bringing into the light so that others can see that there is always hope.

Also for showing us that even when your path is strewn with obstacles, with vision and determination, it is possible to change your circumstances and create a better wa

When incontinence hijacks your successful TV career, you build an online business- with Lucy Griffiths28 Mar 202200:34:32

Send us a text

My guest this week is Lucy Griffiths, a force of nature who rose to the top in the cut-throat world of video journalism, reporting in war zones& even ending up in jail for reporting in Myanmar. But after childbirth she developed severe incontinence & had to rethink her career, becoming an entrepreneur, online course officianado & author of Money While You Sleep.

Lucy taught English in China and was there during the SARS outbreak, so she knew what was coming when Covid struck. Her business was already online by this time so she was able to keep it going.  In fact her book Money While You Sleep helps us all to navigate disasters by creating an online income stream. She herself was forced to do just that when her successful career was brought to an abrupt halt after she gave birth to her son.

Always one for travel and adventure she had reported in the four quarters of the world and loved her job for its ability to shine a light on issues that otherwise might remain hidden, such as the refugee crisis or in war-torn Burmah.

But after giving birth, Lucy suffered such severe incontinence she was unable to leave the house. Over time she received some relief from her symptoms but her career as she had known it was over. So she began to build a business online; something she could do around her young baby and her physical condition.

Gradually she started helping other people to work in a more 'passive' way too. She had proved in her own life that anyone can build a business from their bedroom regardless of circumstance, age, location or skillset. And now she could share those tools and techniques with anyone who needed them.

Her dream is to help refugees build a business and build a new life for themselves.

Thanks so much Lucy, for your openness in talking about the silent burden of incontinence that so lives are hindered by, and for offering a way of making money while you sleep to bring freedom to anyone, no matter their life circumstances.

Thanks also for showing us that we can all dream big and create financial freedom for ourselves through the power of serving others online.

All the caffeine & none of the crash, with Marisa Poster co-founder of PerfectTed, the healthy organic matcha tea energy drink.29 Jul 202400:38:10

Send us a text

Why does matcha give all the caffeine and none of the crash? Could this really be a ‘healthy’ energy drink? The facts are convincing.

If you're interested in learning how we can help manage our anxiety or ADHD with alternative organic healthy energy drinks to stay more energised and focused without the crash, then tune in to this week's guest Marisa Poster, co-founder of PerfectTed a healthy energy beverage brand which smashed it on Dragon's Den, got investment from Steven Barlett and has now, two years late grown by 11,000%.

- All five judges on Dragons Den wanted to invest
- @steven Bartlett did invest & now PerfectTed sponsor his podcast
-PerfectTed went through Steven’s First Flight incubator - Steven has now invested £1M in them - They have an annual revenue of £12M
-They have grown 11000% in the last 2 years (yes 11000%)
What about the drink itself?

It’s delicious. It packs a punch. Keeps our fast brains on the straight and narrow (focus for ADHD)

Its 80mg of matcha tea is organic, ceremonial grade and it’s grown in the best region of Japan for matcha on regenerative farms using traditional methods.

That means you’re getting loads of antioxidants & L-theanine which are all super good for your body, mind and mood.

And it’s kind to the planet.

This young woman is disrupting the energy & cola drinks space (with all their synthetics, sugars, chemicals etc) and is set to be a global health beverage giant. How cool is that.

Marisa shows us that it is possible to turn our own challenges into an advantage, for our own good and for the benefit of others.

Blue sky and sunflowers against missiles and war-mongering, with artist Alena Kuznetsova15 Mar 202200:27:43

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Alena Kuznetsova, one of Ukraine’s leading contemporary artists, who had to flee Kyiv when Russia invaded her country, leaving behind all her paintings and sculptures. We spoke when she managed to get to Lviv, where she was able to stay with a friend to regroup and decided what she was going to do next. We spoke via her phone.

Having escaped to Lviv, Alena was able to talk about how in the first few days of the Russian invasion she thought she might be able to stay in Kyiv. But soon with incoming missiles detonating near her studio, it became clear she and her family couldn't stay.

Born in Russia with a Russian father, she had come to Ukraine at the age of 5 years old and obtained her passport at 16. When Russia invaded, it was as a Ukrainian that she united with her people is standing up against their oppressor.

As an artist Alena had developed a distinctive abstract style and a distinguished reputation, but now in the midst of war it is her citizenship that matters more; politics and saving her country over the loss of her studio and her paintings.

But she needs to  survive, and fortunately she has the digital versions of her work which she can sell through Saatchi Art who represent her. This is a way that the rest of us can help her and other artists like her; by buying fine art prints through the online website, drop-shipped straight to us, no matter where Alena finds herself in the coming months.

She is determined to stay in Ukraine, if she can, to help make Ukraine's art and culture not only survive this war but rise up even stronger from the ashes.

Thanks so much Alena for sharing your personal story, and perspective of what is happening within your country on the ground. I pray that the world unites in giving Ukraine and its people the support they need to secure their freedom and the future of their sovereignty.

Thanks also for showing us how to be resilient in the face of a force that doesn’t have our best interests in its heart.

You can buy fine art prints of Alena’s work on www.saatchiart.com/alenakuznetsova and follow her on Instagram @Kuznetsova_artist

Ripping it all up to start again with TV Executive Bunmi Akintonwa08 Mar 202200:31:55

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Bunmi Akintonwa, Producer, Writer, Exec Producer and CEO of the little black book co (lbbc) a UK production and distribution company backed by Impact X Studios, a fund created by a group of inspirational black investors to support underrepresented entrepreneurs with potential to make a significant difference.

The last couple of years has meant certain projects went hold, which also meant the income from them ceased, and the investors' money was impacted. Bunmi's writing partner died too, and so she was left trying to pick up the pieces and push for new opportunities.

Always resilient and go-getting Bunmi started out as the life style  editor  of  the  Voice  and contributed  to  a number  of  other Youth  style  mags. Then she became a TV reporter on 2nd  series  of  a  cult  youth  series  called  Network  7. Everyone working there was young, hungry and up for doing whatever was needed to get the show in the road. It was all hands on deck and everyone had a chance to test their mettle.

But when it came time to progress her career through the usual channels with a large broadcaster,  reflecting her experience, Bunmi came face to face with sexism and racism, first hand. She wasn't imagining it; the producer told her straight up, they'd fulfilled their quota for black women.

Undaunted, she accepted another job, that took her Rome and her career bloomed until she got pregnant and found that the company didn't want women who were mothers in their midst. By the time she came back from maternity leave, her job had 'changed'.

So out of the ashes she created her own TV production and Distribution company LBBC, and eventually returned to  the UK  armed  with  her  international  experience.  But the pandemic  put a stick in her spokes.

Only now she knew that her work was bigger than anything that could get in her way. Black Lives Matter was the catalyst to start working to help diversify organisations especially within TV industry. After realising the extent of underrepresentation at Cannes Film & TV Festival she founded & became a jury member of DiversifyTV Excellence Awards in partnership with MipCom.

She defines courage as taking  risks , pushing boundaries, pushing open doors  (for  yourself or others) having them slammed  in your face, getting  up  again  taking  risks  again.

Harnessing the sun's rays with Zara Glew01 Mar 202200:37:15

Send us a text

My guest this week is Zara Glew, Managing Director at Environmental Energies. Based in the UK  the company provides people with renewable energy solutions including solar panels and electric vehicle power stations, to reduce energy costs, cut their carbon footprint and taxes and conform to government legislations, while generating a return on their green energy investment.

Zara's business journey through three businesses has been quite a ride, and then pandemic and Brexit hit simultaneously and she had to pull some more tricks out of the bag.

As it turned out people being at home made them think more about the energy they were using and paying for. And with big price hikes on the horizon, the economical offering of the sun's rays started to feel an attractive option for many.

Zara was a difficult middle child but perhaps that helped in the challenges that were ahead of her. One after the other the road blocks confronted her. But each time she took a breath, regrouped and found another way.

Now on the sustainability and renewables path Zara has her vision fixed on a world ahead where we each make our decisions and choices from a place of where we are, and we go from there.

The more we understand the better decisions we can make, and so eductaion is very much part of her remit.

Thanks Zara for pushing for change on the renewables front and for giving us economical options that harness the sun’s rays for sustainable, cost-effective, energy efficient, green energy solutions for the longterm.

It's reassuring to know that we can adopt sustainable, cost-effective ways to save the planet with simple solar solutions, because the power of the sun gives us what we need without destroying anything.

Best Worst Year: coming out of your box with Strabe singer songwriter Angelica Black22 Feb 202200:41:56

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Angelica Black, singer-songwriter & co-founder of the band STRABE who signed with the record label PIAS in 2021. They had moved to London in Lockdown 2020 & unable to start gigging, Angelica took an inward journey to explore their sexuality & gender, knowing they were gay but also then understanding that they identified as non-binary.

In 2017 Angie's dad passed away, and they starting writing songs to process their grief. They moved to Dublin, formed their band Strabe and their song Acid Love was born; later releasing the prophetic Best Worst Year

Musicians and performers really struggled during the pandemic, & Angie came to London in lockdown. There were no gigs but as it turned out from what could have been seen as the worst few years, came some of the best things.

Angie took the time to dig deep into their grief and a life long anxiety, and in doing so came to find their true self; which wasn't the box society had prescribed them.

In 2020 they came out as gay, and then started to explore gender, eventually coming to the realisation that they identified as non-binary.

In sharing their story they hope to positively impact others who are going through their own explorations.

Thank you so much Angie for talking so openly about your journey of self-discovery, so others may not feel so lonely and confused when they find they don’t fit into the tight bands of binary sexuality and gender.  Also for showing us that we don’t need to be confined to straight and narrow boxes, and that when we connect deeply with ourselves we discover we are far greater than any definition would constrain us to.

Your stress, sleep, & hormones may be benefited by this herbal remedy, with Rachel Mason15 Feb 202200:33:39

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Rachel Mason, founder of Our Remedy- an award-winning CBD oil brand with a focus on sustainability and natural self-care, established after finding out she’d never conceive naturally due to cancer cells on her ovaries. Struggling to find a CBD oil targeted specifically at female health issues she decided to create one herself.

Having gone from a Vaping brand with 30 shops to starting a new brand with CBD, and ready to open a shop, the pandemic struck and Rachel had to adapt and learn about digital marketing and online sales overnight.

CBD had come into her life, after having IVF and getting pregnant with her son and later wanting to conceive again only to find she had a tumour on her ovaries which turned out to be Stage 3 cancer. She would have to have a hysterectomy and the intervention would induce menopause. And she was only 30 at the time.

Having to deal with so much in such a short space of time, at such a young age, it was no wonder she was stressed, anxious and finding it hard to sleep. When she turned to CBD it was the answer to her prayers and she eventually got through her health crisis.

But her experience made her want to help other women with their female health issues, and her environmentally responsible and sustainable company Our Remedy was born.

Thanks so much Rachel for bringing your focus to a wellness product for women that addresses our health issues in an eco-friendly and natural way. And thanks for showing us that where there is a will there is a way, and that when we are confronted by health issues often we can help ourselves, and others in the process.

PART TWO: A brain tumour took her little boy, but Louise Long shows us how to rise strong 08 Feb 202200:27:39

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Louise Long a qualified as a Personal Trainer, who had a difficult relationship with food, until she had her 3 children, shifted her perspective, & began a more health-full approach to life; helping others to do so too. Last year she was blind-sided when her young son Dylan died & now she’s raising awareness for brain tumour research

This interview was so powerful we decided to air it in two parts. This is PART TWO.

The last two years have been tough for people – but the enforced lockdowns helped people find nature and walking- and in her business Lou Long has helped more people find health & fitness.

Now training in functional nutrition, Lou talked about being unhappy as a child and “eating her emotions” and her early relationship with food, which followed her through into adulthood.

It was only when  she had children that she decided she didn’t want them to suffer in the way she had, so she started learning about whole food, fitness and founded her business. She realised that it was changing her mindset and mental health that helped change her relationship with food and fitness, and so that's what she starts with, with her clients.

Out of the blue her then 6 year old son Dylan started to be poorly at the beginning of the first lockdown in March 2020. It was a long journey to eventually getting a diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Lou talks openly and vulnerably about what that was like for her, Dylan and the family.

Lou used all her knowledge to help Dylan live as healthfully and happily as was possible, right up to the end.  It was ultimately her determination to honour and celebrate Dylan’s life that took her down the path of raising funds for brain cancer research and awareness.

Thank you so much Louise for having the courage to talk with me so that you can bring awareness for the much needed research around brain cancer, as well as helping people in their own lives to live in a fit and health-full way so that they can BE THEIR BEST. Thanks also for showing us that even in the worst of times we can find a way to bring purpose to our lives so that we can shine a light for our way ahead.

Celebrating our 100th episode with TV journalist & mental health advocate Babita Sharma25 Jan 202200:36:20

Send us a text

This week is our 100th episode and to celebrate, my guest is Babita Sharma.

Babita is a Broadcaster, Journalist & author of the award-winning book The Corner Shop - a Radio Four Book of the Week. She has spent 10 years presenting across BBC News & making documentaries including the landmark BBC Two series Dangerous Borders: The Story of India & Pakistan. She was awarded the Asian Achievement Award for contributions in Media, Arts and Culture.

In her brilliant book The Corner Shop, Babita describes growing up as the daughter of shop owners. As a window on the world it certainly honed her observational skills and gave scope for her imagination run riot. So when  she and her sisters left home and went into a variety of professions- she chose journalism, a not dissimilar opportunity for observation and storytelling.

Being up front and personal with a steady flow of news, she learned to protect herself from the worst of it, so that she could continue to do her job, and whilst she loved the infectious nature of the news room, she did experience some mental health issues along the way.

This brought her to working with MIND for a while and then  recently she joined the board of directors at United for Global Mental Health. She believes in the importance of opening up the subject of mental health so that people know how to step forward and ask for help, and also, so that as a society we make it acceptable and normal to seek support.

Now as a freelancer she continues to make powerful documentaries, is starting her own podcast and mentors journalists, in a bid to help create a landscape in the media that is more reflective of our culture in terms of  diversity, inclusion & equality.

And she is also writing a new children’s book series: The Adventures of Priya Mistry , out in 2023, which explores the adventures of a young Indian girl growing up in a corner shop.

Thank you so much Babita for being the eyes on the world for us and for opening our minds and hearts to a way of seeing that brings us more understanding, more compassion and more hope. And thanks for showing us that when we act on our curiosity and compassion we have the opportunity to create a pathway for building a better world.

Saving the Planet, in whichever ways we can, with Anna Murphy18 Jan 202200:26:45

Send us a text

This week's guest is Anna Murphy, a sustainability consultant specialising in the Future-Fit Business Benchmark. This is a framework that guides the pursuit of a truly sustainable society. She is currently studying an MPA in Public Policy, Public Value and Innovation at UCL.

Always passionate about righting the wrongs of the world she travelled to areas where she could help. But realising that there were inherent problems in the aid industry she decided to find out how she could do her bit in her own country.

Anna decided to focus her efforts on the climate crisis; educated herself, and got involved in Extinction Rebellion. The backlash was so intense and brutal that she found herself burnt out and questioning how far she needed to go and how much was enough in order to balance social compassion and self-care.

After working as a business sustainability consultant and making her own personal changes for the planet she realised that the bigger picture meant policy change, so she started her MA in Public Policy.

Anna is adamant that the future looks hopeful if we each take responsibility in our own way, but being an activist  is the most effective charge for change.

Thank you so much Anna for being a passionate driving force at the forefront of sustainability in business and policy, and for the personal impact you are making for the good of our planet. Thanks also for showing us that we can each make a positive impact towards sustainability by taking small steps and doing what we can, where we can.

Made for more- doing what it takes to live on purpose, with author Vivien Morgan11 Jan 202200:28:39

Send us a text

My guest this week is Vivien Morgan whose documentary work for Channel 4 included Dispatches & award-winning films for ITV. A TV Video-journalist pioneer, she went undercover, reporting on human rights abuse and the regimes of the closed Communist countries. She is the author of Cross-dressed to Kill about women who went to war disguised as men.

Vivien's book is about fearless women who disguised themselves as men so that they could go to war and do their bit. They were early feminists in an era when women were told their place was in the home. They wanted the same opportunities as men so they dressed as men, even when that meant going to war under the threat of being killed or having to kill.

In the years that Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was in power, very often in order to enter the corporate world, women dressed in sharp suits and felt like they had to ‘act’ as men. During the Pandemic, ‘Zoom’ was the disguise for business women who ended with the Lion’s share of the domestic & childcare duties, but had to carry on as if it was business as usual in front of the computer screen.

Vivien herself had to take on different guises when she went into the closed communist countries in order to bring back stories of humanitarian atrocities. In the mainly male dominated world of TV and video-journalism, she had to find her own ways to stand her ground, build her confidence and expand her abilities to make the kind of work that spoke for itself.

Thanks Vivien for celebrating women in history who didn’t have the same advantages as us, but who knew they were made for more, and so did whatever they had to do, to live a fearless life of adventure and purpose. Thank you also for showing us that our resourcefulness as women, means we have the opportunity to create the lives we want for ourselves.

Kickstarting a mindful return to work with Lori Mihalich-Levin04 Jan 202200:32:13

Send us a text

The first in our International Women's Impact Project series- exploring how women are positively impacting the world and the courage it takes to do so. Be inspired to appreciate the impact you are making in your own way.

This week’s guest is Lori Mihalich-Levin, healthcare lawyer & CEO of Mindful Return, which focuses on transition back to work after parental leave, work-life integration & mindfulness for busy professionals. She’s the author of Back to Work After Baby & host of Parents at Work podcast.

Growing up in a family where domestic violence, alcohol & depression were the norm Lori found survival methods that took her well into a career as a healthcare lawyer. But on facing the truth about being raised around domestic violence, her focus shifted, as she began to think about starting a family of her own.

She became interested supporting women going back to work after having babies, and started looking at what helps people create an enriching work/life integration; developing tools to help them bring down their anxiety levels.

When she rolled out her business and support programme Mindful Return, she gave people something tangible to hold onto so that it would be possible to intentionally craft a calm home, even in the crazy swirls of life.

Her approach with the four life anchors of mindfulness, logistics, leadership and community is relevant to all of us, not just working parents.

Thank you so much Lori for successfully helping more than a thousand working parents navigate the back-to-work transition from parental leave so that especially working mums can advance their leadership role while raising a child. Thanks also for showing us that it is possible to be a mum and become a power leader in the workplace, whilst maintaining a mindful approach to work/life integration

Step into your story and make 'Work' work for you, with Jenny Ward14 Dec 202100:32:19

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Jenny Ward, a Career & Transition Coach, specializing in professional storytelling, career planning, and network building for women who are ready to finally live a life by design instead of default.

Having experienced home-working, people's ideas have changed around careers, working for others, or even leaving corporate to start their own businesses.  This kind of flexibility wasn't always the case. You left school, got a job and worked the machine until retirement, or left to have kids.

Jenny started out in the same way, always wanting to please and be the good girl. And that faired her well, until it didn't.

From an established and well paid career in recruitment she jumped shipped, trained as a coach and headed back to Canada to raise her little girl in the land where she grew up.

Now she helps women get focused on clarifying skills, identifying any limiting beliefs, crafting their narrative, and getting clear on what sets them apart.

Thanks Jenny for helping us navigate the challenges of work and careers so that we get to make choices that are in our best interests and so that we live through design and not by default. Thanks for showing us how to be less reactive in our work lives, and instead write our professional story in a way that serves us to live our best lives.

Her clients live are all over the US and Canada as well as Panama, Luxembourg, Amsterdam, Vienna, London, Jamaica, Singapore, Hawaii, Mexico, Kenya, and Italy.  Her clients' work includes Google, Verizon, LinkedIn, Diageo, Marriott, Mastercard, Activision, Netflix, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger.

Stylish, soft, sustainable clothing for your new normal, with Cucumber co-founder Nancy Zeffman07 Dec 202100:30:56

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Nancy Zeffman, co-founder of Cucumber Clothing, a 100% British made luxury clothing brand for women; using a revolutionary intelligent fabric that’s cooling, anti-crush, & long-lasting, to create soft, stylish, sustainable sleepwear and loungewear.

With the first lockdown, being featured on Dragon's Den and everyone taking to their screens for business, Cucumber Clothing shot to popularity. It was the perfect attire for the new home/work integration, and now in the age of the new normal, people realise that they like to feel cool and comfy, and so this sustainable brand's rise to success  has continued unabated.

From PR to the advertising world including Saatchi & Saatchi, having children and then deciding to start her own business, Nancy has always worked on the basis of taking the opportunities as they came along.

However right from the get-go of Cucumber Clothing Nancy and her business partner knew that they wanted to make it a sustainable brand. As she says, they didn't get everything right from the start, but if they had waited to get all their ducks in a row they might never have got going. Instead they made improvements as they went along.

Nancy believes that there are only so many ideas in the world so if you have a good one, have the courage to  grab it and run with it.

Thanks Nancy for stepping up to the sustainability challenge and having the courage to hold strong to your values and vision and for showing us that we can buy, borrow and wear soft and sustainable clothing as part of our individual choices in the challenge to reverse the climate crisis.

Selling a business for $125 million before creating an innovative healthcare app, with Bettina Hein30 Nov 202100:35:11

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Bettina Hein, a serial tech entrepreneur and founder of SVOX a text-to-speech software, which she created right out of graduate school and sold for $125 million. Now she’s founded ‘Juli’ – an AI powered health app/ tech startup that helps people with chronic health conditions.

Access to doctors has been more limited during Covid and so people were more inclined to take care of and monitor their own health. This meant that Bettina's healthcare app Juli had a steep uptake, as people endeavoured to stay on top of their chronic conditions.

It takes a different kind of brain to be a serial tech entrepreneur and indeed Bettina was a smart, curious girl with an insatiable appetite for learning. With a family history of entrepreneursip it was no surprise that she bounced straight from of her many degrees into co-founding a tech start-up that ended up getting sold and the profits shared amongst the stake-holders. She could have lived (frugally) for the rest of her days from the proceeds but that isn't in her DNA. She created another business Pixability, an advertising software company, which she ran for ten years.

But after a health crisis during her post-partum care she decided she had another business in her and she founded Juli, the tracking app for conditions such as asthma, migraine, depression, bipolar disorder and chronic pain.  The idea is that if you can track lifestyle, and internal and external stressors then you can see what your triggers are and when they are occurring. you can then decide to make changes accordingly and thereby improve the impact of your condition.

Entrepreneurship is not for the faint-hearted but it does give you the freedom to be the driver of your own destiny, and despite the challenges along the way Bettina believes that if you have the courage to face that which you do not wish to face, and you put yourself out there with audaciousness, then you are more likely to succeed.

Thanks Bettina for bringing your skill, expertise, creative thinking and entrepreneurship to the issue of human health and well-being, and for giving us the chance to monitor and potentially improve any chronic conditions we might suffer from, and for showing us that there are no limits to our ability to impact the world if we just believe in our the magnitude of

Having an eye on your whole health in the age of blue-light screens with Dr Rani Banik23 Nov 202100:36:03

Send us a text

This week's guest is Dr. Rani Banik, America's Integrative Eye Doctor. She is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained neuro-ophthalmologist with additional training in Functional Medicine. Dr. Rani focuses on the root cause of eye diseases and uses integrative strategies for conditions of the visual system, to treat & manage them naturally.

During the Pandemic often our only connection with the world was through the screen and Dr Rani noticed a sizeable increase in the visual problems of her patients. And that is just the top of the iceberg in terms of other factors in modern life that are affecting our eye health. Migraines & Macular degeneration and becoming increasingly common. And that makes life and work more challenging.

Dr Rani herself went through a period of extreme stress and noticed that her migraines got worse, compounded by an unhelpful diet of processed foods. She sought help from the conventional medical profession but the medications didn't help so she turned to functional medicine for help. The transformation in her health drove her to study and combine functional medicine and ophthalmology, and this paved the way to being able to treat her patients effectively on a whole new level.

The beauty of how she helps people is that it puts our good health in our own hands.  So much of keeping our body in good working order is to be mindful of our lifestyle and dietary factors. Dr Rani believes it takes courage to change old habits and unhelpful beliefs, but when we do, we have our good choices to thank for better health and wellness.

Thank you so much Dr Rani for shedding light on the issues that lead to poor eye health and what we can do to look after our eyes in order that they work with and not against us for the longterm, so that we may stay healthy and effective in our businesses.

Betrayal, burlesque and healing the past, with Lora Cheadle16 Nov 202100:32:34

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Lora Cheadle, a former attorney turned burlesque dancer, who uses the concepts in burlesque to help women untangle the pain of the past and slip into a more comfortable and courageous way of being; powerfully embracing their sexuality, and creating a life they love on their terms.

Lora's biggest passion growing up was dance, and in particular ballet. Instead she went to law school because she was passionate about justice and helping those who were underserved have access to justice.

But with so many experiences where truth and justice did not prevail, she realised that practicing law wasn’t going to help people the way she'd envisioned. So she pivoted to coaching, and started working with people one on one before they were in legal trouble.

At the same time as running a home, raising her kids and running her coaching business she decided to return to her love of dancing and took up Burlesque. Life felt good and as her kids grew older and started to move on to high school and college, Lora thought that this was the time that she could focus more on herself and her husband. But he had other things going on. It turned out he was a serial cheater.

Lora's life was turned upside down and she had to reassess everything. The lessons she learned transformed how she showed up for herself and for her clients, and her 5 step programme FLAUNT was born.

Now she believes that no matter what, always trust your own truth. You are the only one who knows how you feel inside. Trust that feeling. All the answers and guidance you need are within!

Courage is the willingness to share honestly about everything in your life that is messy, ugly, scary and raw. It’s about being willing to show up again and again, until you start feeling better, gaining some clarity, and learning to love yourself again.

Thanks Lora for turning the concepts of burlesque into a powerful tool for overcoming the pains of the past and choreographing a better life; and for showing us that when we flaunt our stuff and reframe our problems from the past we can dance to a different tune in the future.

Beat burnout and stress with Dr Rachel Morris09 Nov 202100:45:45

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Dr Rachel Morris, a GP turned Executive Coach and Specialist in Resilience at Work, helping those in stressful jobs take back control to beat burnout, survive and thrive. She is also the host of You are not A Frog podcast, which shares life hacks for busy professionals so they can beat burnout and work happier.

Always a stress-filled job being in the medical professional, during the pandemic people got to breaking point. Rachel helps people who are used to 'coping' to find ways that they can get more bang for their buck in terms of managing time, and bringing self-care into the picture.

Coming from a background of doctors, Rachel was arguably destined to become one herself. But over time she witnessed the increasing pressure doctors were under and felt that it was her calling to do something about that.

From Complainer to Campaigner with disability advocate Emma Livingstone 02 Nov 202100:49:06

Send us a text

Emma Livingstone is one of around 130,000 adults living with Cerebral Palsy in this country, making it one of the largest disability groups in the UK. A trained Speech Therapist and married with three children, Emma realised through her own experience that those suffering with CP are abandoned by the authorities once they turn 18.

Frustrated for herself and for the others in her community she decided to go from 'complainer to campaigner' and founded the charity Adult CP Hub, to lobby for those much needed services to be provided as lifelong integrated care for adults with cerebral palsy.

In this replay episode Lou talks to Emma about her passion for positive change, her tenacity, her ability to own her condition and her drive to create a community that receives more recognition and support.

Reframing the story of your mental health with author Naomi Fryers25 Oct 202100:31:35

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Naomi Fryers, author of A Very Long Way, a non-fiction narrative about her mental health journey in which she learns about ‘overcoming’ as a basis of proof that surviving can translate into future thriving for those committed to healing.

During the Pandemic, some of the drivers of mental ill health have been social isolation, job & financial worries, housing insecurities, and working in front-line services, and those already with mental health issues. Naomi talks about how it has affected her and what she has done to cope.

Naomi grew up a wild child and a free spirit, with a love for writing. Even back then she could lose herself in the world of her journal. Growing up she balanced writing and jobs to cover the bills. But when she got taken down by a series of physical conditions her mental health suddenly spiralled downwards, and she was sectioned in a mental hospital. It was a terrifying experience, and one that didn't end when she returned to the outside world.

It was only when she happened upon a psychiatrist with a different approach that Naomi started to play a hand in her own recovery. It was from this place of healing that she was able to start contributing to what needs to change in society, legislation and the mental health care system.

Thank you so much Naomi, for sharing your own journey so that others may see their own stories reflected, and may be given a way to create resilience in their own ability to survive and thrive, and that with the right support and coping strategies we can all find a way through our mental health challenges and create a life of possibilities.

You can buy Naomi’s book A Very Long Way on Amazon and follow her on Instagram @Naomifryers

Menopause While Black with Karen Arthur 18 Oct 202100:47:22

Send us a text

This week is a replay of the episode with Karen Arthur to honour International Menopause Day.  After three decades teaching in secondary education Karen was forced to leave her job after hitting a mid-life breakdown; or what she later described as a breakthrough. Discovering eventually that her plummeting mental health was due to stress and menopause, the crisis  left her wondering what she was meant to be doing with her life. After much body, mind and soul rebuilding she started to plough her energies into becoming a designer of bespoke, flamboyant fashion inspired by her Barbadian mother and aunt's vintage wardrobe. From the darkness she emerged with a mission to encourage women to Wear Their Happy.

Karen discusses black menopause, mental health and finding your purpose and passion in life. Karen says that Courage is not about slaying the dragon but about honesty, and being prepared to let go and be vulnerable. In this raw and extremely honest interview Karen brings us her Story from the Edge.

Landing on Mars with Rocket Scientist Melony Mahaarachchi 18 Oct 202100:40:18

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Melony Maharaachchi, who co-founded Cambridge Global Ventures INC after a decade in the US Aerospace Industry; from Elon Musk’s Spacex programme to Boeing to Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Lab where she designed the wiring system for the spaceship Rover that landed on Mars in 2021

Growing up in Sri Lanka Melony had two brothers so her girl friends weren't allowed to come round to play. Instead Melony played with her brothers' friends. This was good training when she entered the male dominated world of Mechanical Engineering at UCLA. It was an aha moment that made her change to robotics engineering, going from the U.S. Aerospace industry as an industry tech leader managing projects for Elon Musk’s Spaces, to Boeing Commercial & NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, Pasedena. Finally she landed the role of Lead Mechanical Engineer for Mars Perseverance Rover which landed on Mars in 2021.

After ten years in the industry she decided to found her nonprofit organization in 2015, iSTEM Without Borders, focusing on underprivileged students and women to help them pursue and thrive in STEM careers. Also mentor startups in UK Cambridge cluster and SLAASCOM Women Technopreneur forum in Sri Lanka.

Life as an entrepreneur can be a hair-raising ride, so the lessons from a rocket scientist turned businesswoman are all too relevant!

Thank you, Melony for your contribution to the tech community and for being a role model for young women around the world and for showing us that anything is possible when you set your vision and take consistent action towards it.

Pushing the envelope with Leanne Bonner-Cooke MBE12 Oct 202100:32:47

Send us a text

This week’s guest is Leanne Bonner-Cooke MBE whose passion for business transformation using innovative software inspired her to found the company E-bate. Scooping trophies for SME Growth, Business Innovation & International Business of the Year awards Leanne is also passionate about championing Women in Tech.

If there has been a time for tech it has been during the Pandemic, when people have turned to it to pivot their businesses and communicate with loved ones. Leanne herself came to technology when she discovered how it could help her dyslexia. After that she didn't look back, until she hit the glass ceiling. She turned her back on the corporate world and quickly found her entrepreneurial spirit

Since then she has championed the importance of women in business and how it’s imperative we encourage young people, boys and girls, into STEM subjects to ensure our future tech leaders. Entrepreneurs are often pushing at the edge of the envelope, and she says that if you develop the courage to believe in yourself and you take the risks and opportunities, then at least, if you do fail, then you know you have tried.

Thank you so much Leanne for showing us that even when the odds are against us, it is always possible to make inroads, if we keep showing up and bringing our best selves to the table.

You can find out more about Leanne’s work on https://www.e-bate.io/ and follow her on Linkedin @LeanneBonnerCookeMBE
