Ep. 211: What if Binge Eating Really Does Feel Like Coping?11 Oct 202600:23:44

What if binge eating feels like a way to cope with emotional pain? In this episode, Kathryn explores why you don’t have to deny the temporary relief or distraction bingeing may provide in order to recover. She explains how emotional pain can trigger urges without making those urges meaningful, and why dismissing urges can actually give you more freedom to cope in healthier ways. Most importantly, you’ll learn that you do not have to handle every emotion perfectly before you can stop bingeing.

Ep. 210: The Scale in Binge Eating Recovery: What to Do About Weighing19 Sep 202600:17:30
This episode explores how to approach the scale during binge eating recovery. There isn’t one right answer about whether or how often to weigh yourself, and Kathryn guides you in deciding what works best for you. You’ll learn why impulsive or compulsive weighing can increase preoccupation and make recovery more difficult, as well as how to handle the thoughts and urges that may come up when you do choose to weigh yourself. Most importantly, you’ll learn how to keep the scale from interfering with the two main recovery goals: eating adequately and dismissing urges to binge.

Episode 207: Recovery Stories Part X (The Intersection of Faith and Eating Disorder Recovery)15 Aug 202600:46:17

Kathryn talks with Beth about her more than two-decade struggle with bulimia and how she ultimately found freedom. Beth shares how the Brain over Binge approach changed the way she understood her urges, and how her Christian faith gave her additional meaning and conviction, which strengthened her ability to put what she was learning into practice. This is Beth’s personal experience, and although faith and spirituality may play very different roles—or no role at all—in each person’s recovery, there are broader lessons in her story about separating from harmful thoughts and connecting with what matters most to you.

Kathryn is joined by Coach Julie to talk about how connecting with who you are and who you want to be can support recovery from binge eating and other harmful habits. Ep. 204: Boredom is Better Than Bingeing10 Jun 202600:22:19

Kathryn talks about why boredom can show up when you start letting go of binge eating and how the lower brain may use that feeling to make the habit seem appealing again. You’ll learn why “boredom is better than bingeing,” and how to stop using bingeing as a (harmful) solution for boredom. Since you can’t avoid all feelings of boredom, it’s crucial to know that you can be bored and still not binge; but you don’t have to stay stuck in boredom either. Kathryn shares a practical framework for finding other things to do when your lower brain says there is “nothing to do except binge.”

Ep. 202: Building the "I Can Do Hard Things" Identity (with Coach Julie)13 Apr 202600:27:57

Coach Julie returns to the podcast for a conversation about building the “I can do hard things” identity. In this episode, Kathryn and Julie explore how the brain wants to keep us in what feels familiar, safe, and easy—and how that can keep us stuck in binge eating and other harmful habits. You’ll learn how your capacity is greater than you think, how to start seeing yourself as someone who can do challenging things, and how small daily actions build real confidence over time. This topic applies not only to breaking free from binge eating, but also to anything you want to overcome, create, or accomplish in your life.

In Part 3 of the Food Noise series, Kathryn shares 7 mindset-based tips to help you respond to food noise in a way that supports recovery and peace around eating. Instead of trying to force the noise to disappear, this episode helps you shift out of fear, resistance, and over-monitoring so the thoughts feel less urgent and less personal. You’ll learn how to recognize the difference between normal thoughts about food and the kind of “noise” that feels harmful, and how to redirect your attention back to your life in a calm, supportive way, building more self-trust over time.

Ep. 199: Food Noise, Part 2: The Effect of the Food Environment (You're Not Broken or Powerless)06 Feb 202600:25:19

In Part 2 of the Food Noise series, Kathryn explores how the modern food environment and intense cultural pressure around bodies and weight contributes to an overabundance of thoughts about food. This episode is designed to help you better understand why the noise shows up, so you can approach it with less self-blame and more self-compassion. Kathryn acknowledges that some people are more sensitive to today’s environment than others and uses a thoughtful comparison to other natural drives to show that increased “noise” doesn’t have to dictate your actions.

Ep. 198: Food Noise, Part 1: Bingeing is Not a Solution17 Jan 202600:20:20

Food noise is getting a lot of attention right now, and it can be easy to assume it’s the reason binge eating happens. But this episode focuses on one essential recovery truth: binge eating is never a solution to food noise. In Part 1 of this new series, Kathryn explains how food noise and urges to binge can be related without being the same thing, why bingeing often amplifies food noise, and why you can’t wait for a quiet mind to stop binge eating. You’ll also hear why staying binge-free is the first step toward finding real solutions for food noise.

Kathryn and Coach Julie explore how gentle humor can support recovery—without minimizing the seriousness of binge eating or eating disorders. You’ll learn how bringing some laughter into certain situations can help pull you out of fight-or-flight and harsh self-criticism, so you can make clearer, more grounded choices. You’ll also learn how humor can soften perfectionism, and change the way you relate to urges so that you can more easily dismiss them.

Ep. 195: The Protection Myth: Bingeing is Not Keeping You Safe03 Dec 202500:25:39

There is a widespread idea that bingeing has “protective” value for the binge eater—protection from difficult emotions, pain, stress, and other problems. I remember believing this when I was bulimic, and I know how convincing it can feel. In this episode, I talk about why the protection narrative may be holding you back in recovery, and how you can learn to see that bingeing isn’t safety—it’s dangerous and it’s hurting you. You can learn to recognize and dismiss the protection thoughts and realize you’re much safer without binge eating.

Ep. 193: Rejecting the Binge Inevitability Mindset07 Nov 202500:16:30

In this episode, I unpack the “binge inevitability mindset”—the belief that a binge is destined to happen at some point. Binge inevitability thoughts can sound like, “I know I’m eventually going to give in and binge anyway, so I might as well just get it over with.” You’ll learn why these binge inevitability thoughts show up, and how to reject them so that you can stop binge eating and prove to yourself that it is never inevitable.

Kathryn talks with Natasha Kostalas, author of Beyond the Barbell: Confessions of a Female Fitness Competitor, about her journey of overcoming binge eating that was fueled by competing in bodybuilding. Ep. 190: Supporting Your Nervous System to Support Recovery27 Sep 202500:45:13

I talked with Dr. Aimie Apigian, author of the Biology of Trauma, about how trauma impacts the body and nervous system, and how that can create challenges in recovery. She explains how trauma healing creates more safety in the body and nervous system, which gives you more access to your decision-making abilities, and therefore supports recovery.

Dr. Aimie shares insights from her medical expertise and personal experience, and also discusses how a trauma-informed approach helped her overcome her own binge eating issue. If you tend to binge during times of high anxiety or dysregulation—even when you know it won’t help—this episode is for you.

Ep. 178: The Easy Path (with Coach Julie)24 May 202500:27:30

Kathryn and coach Julie help you reframe how you think about recovery. You’ll learn to challenge the belief that stopping binge eating is a hard road and see that ending this destructive habit is actually the easy path. Ease never comes from giving in to urges to binge, or trying to control weight through restriction, but from nourishing your body, accepting your natural weight, and letting go of the binge-restrict cycle. Even if there are some challenging and uncomfortable moments in recovery, it’s never as hard as bingeing.

Ep 176: "Eating Foods You Love That Love You Back"18 Apr 202500:25:44

Kathryn and Coach Julie talk about the idea of “eating foods you love that love you back.” This is a phrase that Julie has used here on the podcast and that she often uses as a framework in coaching as she helps people learn to eat adequately. We’ll talk about many ways to interpret this concept and how you can apply it in your own life.

Ep. 174: The Magic of Consistency (with Coach Julie)22 Mar 202500:22:17

A binge-free life is created by dismissing one binge urge at a time, and by eating adequately one meal/snack at a time. This requires consistency. Although the decision to stop bingeing can be instantaneous, healing of the body and brain from this habit takes time. If you’re someone who tends to do well for a little while just to slip back into old behaviors, or if you want to prevent that from happening, this episode is going to be useful to you.

Ep. 172: Inflection Points in Binge Eating Recovery (with Coach Julie)28 Feb 202500:19:24

Kathryn and Coach Julie teach you how to make positive change in pivotal moments or “inflection points” in recovery. You’ll learn that you don’t have to fix every part of your life or every part of your eating. Instead, you can zero in on the times when you are tipping into the problematic behaviors, make some adjustments, and harness your own power of choice. When you recognize and work on your own inflection points, you can avoid going down those familiar but harmful pathways and build new habits.

Ep. 171: Healing Your Relationship with Food, Yourself, and Others (Part I)15 Feb 202500:17:55

Having a difficult relationship with food affects nearly every other relationship in your life, including your relationship with yourself. Because eating disorders are so isolating, you may find yourself turning away from other people—even the people you love the most and who love you the most. Your drive to binge and your obsessive food thoughts can distract you from being present in relationships or prevent you from forming relationships. Kathryn addresses these issues and more in this episode about healing your relationship with food, yourself, and others.

Ep 169: Overcoming "Yeah, Buts" (with Coach Julie)28 Jan 202500:19:56

Kathryn and Coach Julie talk about when doubts pop up in binge eating recovery in the form of “yeah, buts,” including:
Yeah, but I have weight to lose.
Yeah, but I have too much stress in my life.
Yeah, but I have been bingeing for too long.
Yeah, but my case is different.
You can learn to recognize and reframe the “yeah, buts” so they don’t hold you back from having freedom from the struggle with food.

When setting goals or resolutions in the new year, the choice is not a dichotomy between restrictive dieting and not caring about your health or body at all. Ep. 164: Faulty Logic of the Lower Brain11 Dec 202400:19:22

Binge-encouraging thoughts don’t make logical sense, but they are tempting to believe in the moment of an urge. You can learn to stop taking these thoughts seriously, dismissing them as untrue and not indicative of who you truly are and what you truly want. It’s helpful to know that you aren’t the only one having thoughts that try to justify binge eating. In this episode, Kathryn shares several common faulty thoughts (from the lower brain) and explains how you can stop letting these thoughts lead you into harmful actions.
