HOUSE OF WAX (1953) Commentary Track19 Nov 202501:50:02

Flesh crawls! Wax melts! Beneath the mask, is he sculptor or slasher?! BOP rises from the ruins of its humble podcast studio to bring you a BOP n A Movie commentary for André De Toth’s 1953 technicolor classic, House of Wax! AKA “the House of Wax that has less gore but somehow more underwear.” Listen as the crew discuss the role that cemented Vincent Price as a horror star after years of just being a handsome bastard, the challenges De Toth faced shooting the world’s only 3-D movie by a man with one functioning eyeball, the film’s often-forgotten pedigree as a remake meant to take audiences away to a simpler time for horror, and the unforgiving visage of Charles Bronson forever cast in undying clay.

There's only one celebration that gives us the season for a reason: Big-Ass Pumpkin Day! And this year, a last-minute pivot (damn you to high hell, R.L. Stein) causes the crew to spring a trap on Cody during his favorite day of the year. Join them for a surprise Bop n' A Movie commentary track for Spookley The Square Pumpkin, the harrowing tale of a malformed misfit trapped in a world he never made, spurned by his barnyard brethren until his indoctrination into a brutal Olympiad, his only ally a homunculus torn between loyalties to the opposing worlds of man and nature. A beloved animated classic enjoyed by kids the world over!

DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE03 Aug 202400:48:07

It is 2006. I am watching Hugh Jackman's last appearance as Wolverine. It is 2017. I am watching Hugh Jackman's last appearance as Wolverine. It is 2024. I am writing a description of the BOP crew's episode on Deadpool & Wolverine, the former's introduction to the MCU, and the latter's last dance with a beloved actor... who are we kidding, he's doing this till he's 90. Does Ryan Reynolds still bring the Van Wilder charm as Marvel's new golden boy, or is it too late for the Multiverse Saga: Now With Less Kang? How does a character often defined by an inferiority complex work as a mouthpiece for a dying era of film? And just how hard did those credits make us cry? Wade wouldn't give you answers, so neither are we.

Hey... remember when Deadpool's caption boxes ended up being Madcap? Wild times!

As countless movie trailers keep reminding us, the world is changing. With theaters struggling to attract butts to seats, streaming sites are shaping up to soon be the primary way we see new releases. So how well are they handling the responsibility? Join Cody and Jamie as they discuss the highs, lows, and Brights of the former pop-up ad nuisance and current King Of New Media, The Net-Flicks. Does The Irishman live up to the hype, or did Disney put out a hit on Martin Scorsese for nothing? Is word-of-mouth going to be enough to make these titles stand out in an increasingly flooded library? Are we close to Netflix Horror becoming a sub-genre of its own? And for God's sake, will somebody tell Tom Waits how high a bird can count? Next episode playing in 3... 2... 1...

John Carter (Of Mars) - LOVE THE BOMBS05 Dec 201901:03:59

Mars ain't no place to set a movie. In fact, it's cold as hell. This is a lesson Andrew Stanton would learn in 2012 when the release of his dream project, a mega-budget adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' massively influential John Carter novels, was met with spectacular apathy from critics and audiences alike. Released a month before The Avengers, this mocap-heavy sci-fi/fantasy/western was going to kick off the next great Disney franchise, but inexperience, bad timing, and one of the most ill-advised marketing campaigns in recent memory doomed it to the scrap heap. A shame, since it's one of the most charming and lovingly-crafted adventure flicks of the last decade. In this edition of How I Learned To Love The Bombs, we detail how a Pixar director with no live-action experience rescued John Carter from 80 years of Development Hell, the trilogy and more we almost got from a team with three Oscars and a Pulitzer between them, Lynn Collins' turn as the 2010's most unsung action heroine, and how this movie is one Ocean Master away from just being Aquaman.

In this extra special creepy and kooky episode, we turn the clock back to the radical '90s to talk one of our most affectionate childhood movies, Barry Sonnenfeld's THE ADDAMS FAMILY! But, since we three are only mysterious, creepy and kooky, we needed someone to really bring in that spooky! So we reached out to friend of the show and real life Morticia, Jasmine of Spooky Gal's Corner! With our powers combined, we're all together ooky, which is the perfect state of being to talk about this seminal film in many people's lives, which would go onto birth a whole movement of classic TV to film adaptations and cement the iconic versions of these decades old characters. Not to mention immortalize the late Raul Julia. So snap your fingers in tune because it's time to play wake the dead!

We've talked about a lot of good Stephen King movies on Box Office Pulp, but tonight we want to tell you about the ones that weren't so good. A lot of other podcasts have made fun of these, and we finally decided that if you want something done right... you ought to do it yourself. So join the BOP Crew as they reminisce about a childhood wasted waiting for The Langoliers to eat that airport, Matthew Mcconaughey's leisurely stroll toward The Dark Tower, the tremendous lasting impact Maximum Overdrive has somehow had on American culture, and the sinister storefront where each item comes at a terrible cost... boredom. When the dust clears, paper will have been torn, Tommyknockers will have Tommyknocked, and Cody will have been forever entangled in the nightmare that is... the Dreamcatcher.

Always check if there's a Blumhouse release out, never go to a stranger's home to see their VHS collection, and NEVER watch alone. I see you're ready to pop in the 2009 anthology Trick r' Treat tonight, but not so fast, Timmy! You want to let The BOP Crew check that movie for razor-blades, so give this BOP n' A Movie audio commentary a listen first! Our Samhain Specialists are here to explore how Michael Dougherty's directorial debut showcases the holiday in all of its forms, from the innocence of youthful corpse-carving to the romance of your first werewolf transformation. Along the way, they'll unwrap the SFX techniques that span generations of film-making, the balancing act of conflicting tones it pulls off effortlessly, the questionable decisions of a studio that tried to bury it at every turn, and the complex motivations of Leslie Bibb in a robot costume. And after they're done, you'll have so many delicious razor-blades left over for some tricking of your own!

THE PUMPKIN KARVER Commentary Track (A Big-Ass Pumpkin Day Extravaganza)14 Oct 201901:47:53
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LPbkAiJwhI4/XaRpgxQJO4I/AAAAAAAAAf4/04DZI0nom_Eh1s864Av4xRseJBzpQMQsQCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/PumpkinKarverLogo.pngGet out your knife and a really big spoon, because it's the only day of the year the BOP Crew looks forward to more than Halloween: The Great Gourdening, Dia de los Calabaza itself, Big-Ass Pumpkin Day! And to properly prepare for the festivities, we suggest you put on a slasher so obscure it makes you think "Wow, Amy Weber and Minka Kelly are really slumming it," THE PUMPKIN KARVER! Mix together this year's BAPD Cocktail, and listen to Cody, Mike, and Jamie get lost in the dangerous world of expert pumpkin carving.  Then grab your own pump', cut a full circle around the top, leaving plenty of room for scooping. Once the ole' orange-boy is hollow, draw your desired Jack-O onto the gourd with a a black marker, and carefully remove the desired pieces in a gentle, see-saw motion. Just don't carve with any evil in your heart! But also don't be afraid to go crazy, Jack's a versatile dude!  Around this time, the Crew should be lost in a terrifying alternate reality where the pumpkins have come to take back what's their's. Set your new friend on the couch next to you, down a good swig of that BOPtail that's been gathering dust. After this, absolutely nothing will matter and you'll be in the perfect mindset for Karver's respectable FX budget and dedication to patch-based horror. Take another sip.  Ahh. It truly was a Big-Ass, Big-Ass Pumpkin Day.

Not, like, in a stalker way or anything, we just-- it's a podcast, okay? And in honor of this year's love affair with the man, we're spotlighting the legend, inspiration, and goddamn industry that is Stephen King! People (mainly us) have gushed about The Shining and IT aplenty, but what about the lesser-known cinematic gems from the most-adapted author since God? Listen to Cody Flagg, Mike Renfield, and It Was Always Meant To Be Jamie as they revisit the time two masters of horror gave us the love story of a boy and his Plymouth; a tale of revenge from beyond the grave from the man who resurrected Jason; the only Rob Reiner movie more upsetting than North; the evilest of fucking rooms, and more!

The BOP Crew is sitting down with some instant coffee and whipping chocolates at the refrigerator. Cody's housewarming party? No, it's because we're talking about the 1992 sci-fi/horror/noir/comedy from the writer of Hollow Man and The Fast And The Furious, SPLIT SECOND! Haven't heard of it, you say? Neither had we until the passing of it's star, Rutger Hauer, but what we found was a chronicle of the far-flung future of 2008, where a troubled detective who doesn't play by the rules searches the flooded streets of London for a killer who may be something more - or less - than human. In other words? B-Movie heaven! Listen we as we discuss it's eerily feasible "future" setting, the avalanche of plot points that take us from gene sequencers to astrology charts, whether or not this movie knows it's ridiculous, the joy of seeing prestige actors dress like action figures, why it really should have been called Black Tide, and how Stephen Norrington gave us the first live-action Venom. It's always comes back to Venom!

CHILD'S PLAY 2 Commentary Track22 Aug 201901:36:14

Clearly you don't know how slasher flicks work! We're continuing our BOP 'n A Movie series on the franchise that keeps going and going and going and going. And unlike that piece of crap Energizer Bunny, Chucky don't need no batteries to do it! This time, we tackle the baby steps the series took as it moved on from Tom Holland, slowly began embracing a more campy tone, and sky rocketed everyone's favorite killer doll into a pop culture sensation! A debate has raged between series fans for decades on whether this sequel is a worthy successor. While The Crew all share differing opinions on that very subject, the aim is to dig deep and show to even it's defenders... Don Mancini's CHILD'S PLAY 2 is more interesting than it first appears! From the differences between alternate cuts, it's brutal take on violence, Andy's one-of-a-kind arc, and it's unique take on suburban horror. So, knock that annoying Tommy Doll aside and join us for this feature commentary!

HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS14 Jul 202400:24:05

With studios less sure how to reach audiences by the day, only one film has the answer to what people truly want: HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS. In the newest movie from Mike Cheslik and the team behind Lake Michigan Monster bring us a new descent into whimsy and madness in a film so ridiculous, we're convinced it stars Cody. Join Mike and Jamie as they talk about this delirious swirl of live action cartoon, silent(ish) movie, harrowing survival tale, XXX-ed jugs ,and 16-bit farming sim (not kidding), HUB might be the most creative movie of the year, the funniest movie were seen in ages, and without a doubt the best movie ever made on the subject of man's battle against mascot suits.

Mini BOP - VENOM01 Aug 201900:35:50

An era ruled by a wise and fair Macho King, all your favorite characters co-existed in ice cream form, and an invasion of bigger, badder, and extrem-ier anti-heroes hit comics like a flaming-hot meteor, and cooled off just as quickly. Over thirty years since his creation, VENOM has not only outlived the trends that birthed him, but thrived -- much to the chagrin of the same readers who were his first fans. In Eddie Brock's film debut (we don't talk about Spider-Man 3), Ruben Fleischer and co. have not only paid shockingly faithful tribute to the nerd world's #1 problematic fave, they've chucked the macho doom-and-gloom for an upbeat romp about a boy and his blob. So why all the hate? In this Mini BOP, Symbiotic Experts Mike and Jamie weigh in on fans' curious relationship with the character, the one-of-a-kind tone that sets it apart from a sub-genre aching for experimentation, where this ranks in the annals of Weird Tom Hardy Performances, and how Venom is 100% a queer romantic-comedy. CHANGE OUR MINDS.

CHILD'S PLAY (1988) Commentary Track20 Jul 201901:40:16

Or at least until you shove us into a fire place and light us ablaze. But even being a congealed, melted hunk of plastic won't keep us from bringing you this BOP 'n A Movie! With the remake having just recently graced theaters, it seemed appropriate to travel back in time to the beginning of a now incredibly long-running horror series, to the first time Charles Lee Ray bellowed out an incantation to transfer his soul. The first time he screeched out "you bitch!" or skittered about the floor with a kitchen knife to threaten a small child. Ah, memories. But in seriousness, this franchise has evolved like no other, changing in tone and rebooting itself to stay with the times, never betraying it's continuity or characters, all while proving that a severe lack of AA batteries is one of the scariest things of all. So, join us for this feature commentary that dissects how the hell an 80s movie about a killer garbage pail kid is so god damn terrifying, effective, and way more prestige than it should be! Give it up for Don Mancini and Tom Holland's, CHILD'S PLAY! Also, we find out how much Mike despises puppetry.

That's why we're glad to report that a new icon has risen to inspire America in its darkest hour: Mysterio, the star of Marvel's Spider-Man: Far From Home. Listen to us rave about how Jake Gyllenhaal brings the iconic inter-dimensional traveler known as Mysterio to life, the surprisingly relevant themes his character represents, and what the developments he brings to the table mean for both Spider-Man and the MCU at large. In a world where Into The Spider-Verse exists, what does this movie do to step out of the shadow of a cultural touchstone, and how does it all, in the end, come down to Mysterio? GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (2019)27 Jun 201900:59:32

Now THAT'S an environmental lesson we can all get behind! It's been many a years since Gareth Edwards rose a new Americanized big budget Godzilla from the depths. It may not have been perfect, but with the release of Michael Dougherty's damn fine roller-coaster ride of a sequel, it is the perfect cinematic equivalent of "I set 'em up, you knock 'em down!" And boy, did Dougherty knock 'em down! Aided by one hell of a cast, some killer effects, new and fascinating allegories, a surprisingly engaging human story, and more Monster Zero and Mothra action than you can shake a Rodan at,  GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is a Kaiju slug-fest that all others should bow down to! I mean, Rodan definitely will, but he'll bow to a startling breeze. So, with a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound, pull some high-tension wires down with us as we dissect the intricacies of this Toho love letter!

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN Commentary Track18 Jun 201901:40:21

You've seen them say n-o to Jack-O,  and chase Pumpkinhead back to Lance Henrickson's shack with his pumpkintail between his pumpkinlegs! But now they face off against cinema's most terrifying creatures... Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, the original Vaudevillian Villains! In yet another BOP 'n A Movie rock 'em and sock 'em punch-out involving things which go bump in the night and/or snarl a lot, we survey the only surviving record of three hapless monsters who left the old country in search of the American dream, and found only a nightmare. A nightmare of sight gags, prat-falls, and wacky chase scenes! It's the movie that invented the horror-comedy as we know it, contains perhaps Bela Lugosi's strongest performance as a creature of the night, the dawn of Glenn Strange's tenure as the titular Monster, and feels as fun and witty today as it was in 1948! Many a horror-nerd hold this film near and dear, us included, so we're busting out the popcorn (and a special mad science-y concoction of booze!) to dig deep in dissecting some cinematic history and raise this feature commentary for ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN from the dead!

AVP: ALIEN VS. PREDATOR Commentary Track10 Jun 201902:02:45

THE XENOMORPH! And... in this corner... from parts unknown... he's the last laugh on Schwarzenegger... he's one ugly mother f*cker... THE PREDATOR! And whoever wins... doesn't really matter because we'll still be getting a really disappointing sequel either way. But we're not here for requiems! We're here for a monster mash-up of a BOP 'n A Movie! Remembered for being a big dumb CGI laden action flick, with years removed and upon reflection... well, it's still like half that. BUT more interesting than it's reputation allows! This feature commentary will dig deep into the Antarctic to detail how this is in reality a practical effects spectacle (with little CGI), standing as a fun rumpus beat 'em up despite it's flaws, and boasting a long forgotten and killer survivor girl that definitely needs more credit and appreciation. So, prepare to deep throat a facehugger for Paul W.S. Anderson's AVP: ALIEN VS PREDATOR!

Tales From The BOP: HELLBOY (2019)31 May 201901:16:36

That statement did not come out right at all, but unlike this episode's subject, we stick to our guns all the way down. That's right, BOP's very own Senior Hellboy Aficionado Cody went to see Neil Marshall's studio-hijacked 2019 reboot/prequel/spin-off/Cinematic-Universe-Creation-Kit, and after several weeks of reflection felt up to the task of running us down each and every footnote-burdened sequence. Listen as Cody The Homunculus guides us through a twisting labyrinth of flashbacks, character introductions, location changes, needle-drops, and lobsters Johnson, all to please a fan-base that would've preferred it if they'd just stuck with the other guy. Is this Hellboy just a bunch of cosplaying actors reading Wikipedia articles aloud to the camera over their director's muffled sobs, or is there value to be found in this maligned production? The first one. Definitely the first one. It's a bad movie, don't watch it. But do grab yourself a brew and a king-sized Baby Ruth, and listen to us spin another bone-chilling Tale From The BOP!

And what better way to begin then with a film that ushered in a new age of Hollywood: Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow! Find out how two brothers from Flint, Michigan went from shooting a short film about killer robots in their living room to being in charge of a multi-million-dollar tent-pole, how they unintentionally pioneered the technology that's made everything from Avatar to the MCU possible, and how bad timing and industry shuffling led to director Kerry Conran being in movie jail to this day.

But besides "whatever it takes," what do we actually do now in a post-Endgame world? Disney+ shows? Mysterio's Big Adventure? A sequel to The Incredible Hulk? No, the exchange of souls needed for that one would be too great. Ten years have taken us from "We're Iron Mongers, Tony," to "The Staff of The Living Tribunal," from Whiplash's bird, to Killmonger's Oscar nomination, and every stunt-casting in-between. While we mourn the loss of being really, really hyped for Endgame, we also go over what we loved about this ending of a cinematic era (that isn't actually ending), it's surprisingly subtle adaptations of comic scenes famous and obscure, the return to the indie sensibilities that once defined Marvel Studios, how it's themes capture and distill the profound message of Marvel both in print and in film, and, of course, The Red Skull. Mostly we talk about Red Skull. What he's thinking. How he feels. What he tastes like. It's kind of a problem.

Not by a long-shot. We are, however, the only one with drink-mixing segments, and that's something! Listen to the pod-slingers discuss this movie's surprisingly deep themes of identity and multiculturalism, its one-of-a-kind animation style, and how it wove together disparate threads from a dozen comic sources to make what may be the perfect superhero movie. Do we still find time to thirst over a cartoon pig? Of course. But what makes us stupid... is what makes us qualified to talk about Spider-Man.

THE EXORCISM13 Jul 202400:27:34

What an excellent day for filming an exorcism. THE Exorcism, in fact! And that's the closest thing to a joke you're getting, because the duo behind The Final Girls is back with another deeply personal-- and far much colder-- look at a young woman connecting with a parent in showbiz. Joshua Miller and M.A. Fortin team up with Russell Crowe and a seemingly endless list of character actors to tell the story of a newly-sober man trying to get himself on the right track by taking what could be the role of his career, the priest in a remake of a famous exorcism movie, no matter what demons from his past it may awaken. Unable to win respect at home or on set, dodging a well-intentioned holy man, a director more interested in getting a rise out of him than his acting, and an alleged "curse" that's already claimed one actor, it's the perfect environment for a man to lose himself... or be found.

No, folks, this ain't a dream, and you can't escape! The moon is full and the air is still, and we are just covered in undead cat hair. Which can only mean one thing... dead really is better. But so is BOP! In this episode, Mike and Cody exhume themselves for a chat on the new adaptation of Stephen King's darkest work: PET SEMETARY. We discuss the impressive changes from the source, how it captures King's themes, some spooktastic atmospheres, and difficulties in translating the book's particular brand of unsettling to the big screen. But, most importantly, we learn that we all could use a little more Wendigo in our lives. Open your hearts, people!

This time though (see what I did there?), there's something far more perilous in store... the grossness of the Old West. THE WATER IS BROWN. But that ew, aside, our BOP 'n A Movie series examining The Back To The Future Trilogy has reached the teased conclusion, and while Part 2 famously dug deep into time travel shenanigans and big sci-fi stakes, the final entry scaled it all back, sticking to a singular adventure and making the stakes personal for our time-displaced heroes in a tale about growth, love, and how Tom Wilson is probably the greatest actor who's ever lived and dammit why don't we talk about that more!? Saddle up, make yourself some Wake-Up Juice, and watch along with us for this feature audio commentary for what is, un-ironically, one of the best Western's ever produced... You can call us fashionable, though. What, with our double ties and all. But, enough about neck accessories, our special BOP 'n A Movie series is blasting off into the future, the alternate present, and back to the past, for the next entry in the beloved trilogy -- BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 2! Featuring the first appearance of President Trump. Sigh. But, that unfortunate prediction aside, it also features one of the most interesting uses of time travel in a story, ever... even if it is to it's own detriment. We dig into topics such as production history, the thought process that went into breaking the story, why said story is kind of broken, it's approach to future design, Zemeckis' push to do things totally unique, why you gotta respect Part 2 at the end of the day, and the sad, sad story of replacement George McFly. So, if you got the POWAH - along with a copy of the movie - join us for this feature audio commentary!

The first (finally) female-fronted Marvel flick that is allll about that swagger. We discuss the interesting choice of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck as directors and how it paid off huge for the studio, giving us both a rousing space-buddy-adventure throwback and focused character study; Brie Larson's star-making turn in which she pitch perfectly brings Carol Danvers to life; how Ben Mendelsohn is straight up Skrullin; MCU connections; and, of course, we make fun of lame dudes on the internet who review bombed the movie and laugh at their failures.

Exactly how much about the nuts and bolts of this touchstone have we all overlooked? Breaking it all down proves it to be a one movie film school, we discover. From the sheer inventiveness put into it's design, the near cosmic series of coincidences that led to it's lightning strikes clock tower perfection, and how it gifted us a new breed of story and film-making. His filmography is as vast as space, and as timeless as infinity. He is the middle ground between light and shadow, between history and fantasy, scarf and baseball cap. His blu-rays lay between the pit of your sci-fi collection, and the dusty shelf where you keep an unopened copy of Empire Of The Sun. That's the signpost up ahead, your next stop: the finale to Spielberg Month here on BOP! In this episode, we ponder how one of the greatest living directors can switch between such radically different modes of filmmaking, the surprising ways these tones overlap in his best films, and the subtle connections uniting the stories he's dedicated his life to telling. Welcome back to the only podcast that can fly, that can fight, that can even god damn CROW. And if you've managed to find your marbles, you know this is Steven Spielberg Month, which means we've conjured our happiest thought to provide a BOP 'n A Movie feature commentary for what may be his most polarizing picture, 1991s sometimes too-cheesy-for-it's-own-good family classic -- HOOK! Some love it, some despise it, and there's very little in-between. The Crew tries to get to the bottom of why that is, and the answer might cause you to respect Hook a little more, regardless of where you fall. From Spielberg's own complicated thoughts on the finished product, it's long gestation period, how it re-contextualized the tale of Peter Pan without going the deconstructionist route, all to build a unique perspective on aging and parenthood, and not to mention Robin Williams giving one of his most interesting and passed over performances, we do our best to give this equally cherished and reviled flick the once over it demands! But above it all, there's Smee. Yes, yes, Rufio. We know. We love Rufio, too. But SMEE, people!

AKA The Two Faces Of Steve, AKA Spielberg Dead Ahead, AKA a third joke. And we're kicking it off with one of his most stylized and off-kilter films: 2002's Minority Report. While much of the talk today concerns its chillingly accurate predictions of modern technology, the Crew find this to be one of the director's deepest films, and they discuss the political climate that influenced it's tone, the adaptation's meaningful deviations from Philip K. Dick's story, and the lengths Spielberg went to in order to create one of the most iconic futerscapes in film.

Unlucky for you, there's still one more cursed voyage to take in our look at low-grossing 90's derelict ship-based horror, BOP n' A Tragedy! Our final stop on this roller-coaster of quality is Paul W.S. Anderson's incomplete cult classic, 1997's EVENT HORIZON! In this feature commentary, we perform a loving autopsy on a film that began life as a simple ghost story in space, and evolved into a psychological journey through hell... before an insecure, cold feet studio left us with a final cut that reaches for the stars but only nearly gets there. From hiring Sam Neill to deconstruct his own film persona, to throwing Actual Satan into a traditional sci-fi plot, we go through the surprisingly bold decisions made by a filmmaker most known for playing it dumb, and end up with a newfound respect for the man who gave us Resident Evil. But that's a tragedy for another time...

Well, now it's time for the second act of our journey through high-concept 90s sci-fi bombs, BOP 'n A Tragedy! And our next feature commentary is for the 1998 high seas adventure/creature feature/noir/comedy/backdoor pilot, DEEP RISING! Just one year before he gave us The Mummy, director Stephen Sommers would ask himself, "what would have happened in Die Hard if Godzilla showed up halfway through?" The result would be one of the most unique and subplot-burdened genre films of the era. From Jerry Goldsmith's score to Treat Williams devouring the scenery at every turn, we're diving 30,000 fathoms to uncover what makes this vessel far more sea-worthy than it has any right to be, and mourn a SURPRISE cinematic universe we very nearly had. Millennial Nasties + TERRIFIER 1&2 with Ariel Powers-Schaub01 Jun 202401:27:01

They're on the screens! They're in your home! They SHOULD be on your mind! Extreme cinema, exploitation, video nasties, whatever you call them, they take theaters by storm once every generation, and tonight we're wringing this moral panic for all it's worth! With the help of returning guest Ariel Powers-Schaub, the BOP Crew charts how the films detailed in her new book Millennial Nasties took inspiration from the gross-out cinema of the eighties to define the torture porn of the 2000's, before a chat about how those boundary-pushing themes are alive in the current king of modern nasties, Terrifier 2. Tangents along the way include Film Theory: Art The Clown Edition, a brief meeting of the May Canady Appreciation Society, and the secret origin of The Sham Wow Guy.

Millennial Nasties can be pre-ordered directly from Encyclopocalypse in eBook and Print at www.encyclopocalypse.com (BuyHorrorBooks.com) On on September 17th, 2024 it will also be available from your favorite bookseller. Cinema can, and often is, a triumph. But, dear listeners, haven't the triumphs of the medium been examined, analyzed, and spoken of enough? The laws of time and space have a rule: for every positive, for every triumph... there must be an opposite. And so, welcome to BOP 'n A Tragedy! A mini-series where we put films that are commercial or critical failures under a microscope, and learn to celebrate what is there, warts and all. To kick it off, we're watching a real schlocky clunker of a problematic fave, 1999's Jamie Lee Curtis disowned, VIRUS! Robot zombie cyborgs from space, one of the lesser Baldwin brothers, Donald Sutherland putting in the weirdest performance ever, all based upon an indie comic by a fairly well regarded writer and directed by Jim Cameron's go to special effects whiz! A recipe for something special, even if it didn't quite turn out. But why didn't it? In our feature audio commentary, we get to the bottom, from production history, to structure and concept, all while giggling at some of the coolest creature effects put on film.

Or lousy clean shaven face. Or lousy beard. Or whatever you have these days. Bees, perhaps? Who knows, we're under the age of 70 and don't watch your show. The important thing is, Cody has wrestled hosting duties away from you and re-branded everyone's favorite prime time game show into... BOPardy! And things run less than smoothly because of it. We're throwing out world history and replacing it with movie trivia! Or something. I don't know, Cody got weird with it, and there was improv, and Dracula, and a lot of screaming. Look, Mike and Jamie were tortured to the point they nearly quit the show, so if you want to see friends TORN APART while duking it out for fake money, then get your daily double (two shots Jack recommended) and join the BOP Crew as they descend into game show hell in this very special edition episode!

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (2017)21 Dec 201801:02:29

Which is why we're so upset that our relaxing train ride has been interrupted with murder most foul! We actually have to record an episode when all we want to do is read Dickens and eat cake. So, in an episode where everyone - yes, even you, dear listener - is a suspect, The Crew curls their double mustaches for a sit down chat about Kenneth Branagh's superb adaptation of Agatha Christie's whodunit masterpiece, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS! How did Branagh and screenwriter Michael Green give us a new, laser focused contextualization of Hercule Poirot, a character as legendary as Mr. Holmes, but whom gets none of the credit, all without re-inventing him from the ground up? What of the Old Hollywood filmmaking the film gifts us? The acting porn packed into one long tube of A-Listers? How the film take us on a philosophical sojourn while still giving us Willem Dafoe with a silly accent? And how has the history of the mystery informed storytelling to this day? The answers are FULL of the fudge! But, like, in a good way. Not that fudge is usually diabolical.

CLUE Commentary Track (with Carter Lee)13 Dec 201801:50:08

Was it Jamie in the Kitchen with the candlestick? Perhaps Mike in the Library with the revolver? Or, in the most likely scenario, our special returning guest Carter Lee in the Dining Room with the rope!? No matter the answer, Communism was JUST a red herring, we assure you. You see, on this date of December 13th, but in the year of 1985, one of the greatest comedies ever produced was unappreciatively released in theaters. But, decades later, we're here to appreciate! And delve into what makes this classic satire of whodunits so special -- and it's not just the fact a movie based on a board game was actually good. And so, BOP 'n A Movie cordially invites you on this dark and stormy night to our Manor of Many Rooms, for a dinner date of brandy, blackmail, and MURDER! But before we stack any corpses onto the couch, enjoy this feature commentary track for... CLUE!

And Box Office Pulp has come to graduate from Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! Many werewolf full moons ago we took off in Hagrid's side car on a quest that took us from a cupboard under the stairs, to one of the greatest cinematic worlds ever produced, all to plumb the intricacies and artistry of a once in a lifetime series that actually stuck a landing! And boy, what a landing. BOP 'n A Movie opens at the close to provide a feature commentary for HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART TWO! The, at times, tragic, but often triumphant culmination of a franchise that many, literally, grew up on. As for our final word on J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World and all those who put their blood, sweat, tears, and tolerance of Dobby into bringing it to life? Always.

I gave you all the reviews. But still you did. Still you watched due to the promise of Michael Fassbender battling a Snowman themed serial killer. Now look at you, a shadow of your former self. But luckily, for the rest of you, one member of the BOP Crew has turned his soul crushing viewing experience into this spine-tingler of a TALES FROM THE BOP! All in hope you don't meet his same twig-armed fate! This time, Mike weaves for Cody and Jamie, a story of Charlotte Gainsbourg dry humping our lead actor, a Dubbed Val Kilmer growling in a tub, scenes that play our perilously without any sense of rhythm or connection to plot, and a director who has disowned his own film! Allow me to introduce you all to the botched adaptation of the worldwide best-selling novel... THE SNOWMAN!

The Art of Adaptation (with Adam DeCollibus)20 Nov 201800:52:48

But that doesn't mean we're not giving it the old college try, as we talk about the art of film adaptations with our special guest, and author of the upcoming book CARAVAN, Adam DeCollibus! We try to nail down what can be gained from moving a story from one medium to the next, what can be inevitably lost, and how those changes can sometimes affect the source material in unexpected ways. Case in point: The Spirit. Remember The Spirit? No? Well, once upon a time there was a man named Frank Miller...

Take a look! It's in a book! Download the episode here! There was no way to make that rhyme.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 Commentary Track10 Nov 201802:38:58

Nearing the end of their Wizarding journey, they found the final adaptation had been split in two! Being podcasters with little to no lives outside their hobby, though, they simply waved off any prior obligations and sat down for the first of their final two Potter BOP ‘n A Movie tracks! The Golden Trio find themselves lost in some woods, and lost emotionally, as a movie often tossed aside and mis-remembered as  nothing more than stretched out prelude, may in fact, be one of the most interesting and best in the canon, and a real showing of what David Yates can do once he’s figured himself out. The kids forever leave childhood behind and are violently forced to confront being adults in a world at war in: HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART ONE!

A Bunch of Hocus Pocus: The Kids Horror Canon31 Oct 201801:41:38

It’s the spookiest night of the year, with all the little ghosts and goblins performing tricks and collecting treats, but instead of watching in wistful remembrance of youth, The BOP Crew is celebrating Halloween by… well, talking in wistful remembrance of youth! We’re digging up the most underrated, but arguably, most important bones of the genre, and assembling a Frankensteinian canon of influential children’s horror media. We’ve got Cowardly Dogs, Midnight Societies, Goosebumps, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark sitting in our lab, not only waiting to give you back some old nightmares, but holding the key to what makes this stuff the very heart of horror, and essential to growing up. We all owe Ernest a life debt, is what I mean.

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE Commentary Track30 Oct 201802:44:43

For we have reached the penultimate entry in the series (technically!). An entry in which, every day, every hour, this very minute, perhaps, dark and moody cinematography attempt to depress the hell out of you! Then again, maybe seeing the young hero we've watched grow up before our eyes struggle relentlessly with Wizard PTSD is what's doing that. With this film, Steve Kloves returns, David Yates starts finding his groove, and we learn a whole lot about love... until we're reminded that love has an opposite, and it rears it's ugly head in one of the best gut-punching finales in cinema. So, take your liquid luck, crack open your potions book, and join us for the somewhat polarizing, HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE!

Just when the BOP crew thought they could enjoy some much-needed R&R, they're pulled away from their vacation to stop a madman threatening to destroy everything we hold dear: their co-host! Welcome to SPEEDARDY, the game show where the velocity is made up and the pedestrians don't matter, organized by Quizmaster Cody to test the limits of his friends' knowledge of the Jan de Bont crowd-pleaser... if only they had actually watched the movie beforehand. Will Mike get the girl, or will it be Jamie who discovers how few relationships based on intense experiences ever work out? Will we learn why Willem Dafoe needs a bathtub of leeches to fight off his Computer Sickness? Will ANY of this actually circle back to the 1994 blockbuster Speed?! Probably not.

They could tell dumber jokes, analysis film better, AND eat more popcorn. Box Office Pulp, the greatest movie podcast that ever lived! According to their mother's. That whimsy aside, I don't know about you, but I smell pumpkin in the air, along with a tinge of last year's candy corn. 'Tis the season with the most reason!
