This Nutrition Expert Is FED UP With Dietary Dogma & Knows What You Should REALLY Eat (Including The 2-Day Eating Plan That Will Change Your Gut For More Fullness!) With Joel Greene28 Sep 202401:08:14

In this episode with repeat guest Joel Greene, you’ll get to explore a unique dietary pattern inspired by nature's rhythms—foraging, fasting, and feasting. Joel introduces a powerful two-day cycle that mirrors ancient eating habits, alternating between foraging and an "amplified fast" to optimize body renewal. Along the way, you'll discover how this method boosts GLP-1 for appetite control and balances nutrient intake with smart food pairings. Plus, Joel shares tips on using pre-dinner shakes, resistant starches, and even cold plunges to enhance satiety, fitness, and overall health, while highlighting the crucial role of nitric oxide and a healthy microbiome.

Joel is the creator of Veep Nutrition, the world's first commercially available program based on targeting gut communities to affect health and body composition. His system has been used by some of the nation's largest employers, including major cities and hospitals and featured on Dr. Phil Show storylines.

He is the author of The Immunity Code: The New Paradigm for Real Health and Radical Anti-Aging. Joel has devoted over 50 years to the pursuit of health, nutrition and anti-aging. He was training with intervals in the 1970s, taking MCTs in the late '80s, following keto in the early '90s, and targeting AMPK by 2009. At age 55, he is a 100 percent natural athlete and uses no ergogenic aids while working out (on average once per week) and eats whatever whenever.

Get ready for a rich and informative episode that rethinks modern dietary practices by embracing ancestral wisdom and cutting-edge science. Whether you're interested in diet hacks, longevity, or groundbreaking nutrition insights, you won't want to miss this episode!

DARK Calories! How Vegetable Oils Destroy Your Health (& How You Can Get It Back) With Dr. Cate Shanahan24 Aug 202400:59:46

Dr. Cate Shanahan, “The Energy Doctor,” is a Cornell-trained physician-scientist whose works have inspired entire movements involving bone broth, live-culture ferments, and seed oil-free business empires. Together, with NBA legend Gary Vitti, she created the LA Lakers PRO Nutrition program, which has been emulated by elite championship teams around the world.

Dr. Cate is back for a threepeat to discuss her new book Dark Calories, in which she introduces you to well-respected scientists who warn that vegetable oils are a public health disaster, wreaking havoc on your body’s cells by depleting antioxidants and promoting free radical toxicity.

Their many effects include:

  • Uncontrollable hunger, resulting in the need for drugs to maintain your weight
  • Inflammatory fat buildup under your skin and within your internal organs and arteries
  • Blood sugar swings that promote bad moods and antisocial behavior
  • Disrupted brain energy, concentration problems, and mental illnesses
  • Intracellular oxidative stress that promotes cancer development
  • Gut inflammation, bloating, heartburn, and "the runs"

Important protein powder note: During our discussion, Dr. Cate and I expose the issues with the oxidation and processing of protein powders. Oxidation can indeed be an issue for all food and supplement products. This is why, at my supplements company Kion, we negotiate higher up the supply chain to get fresher raw ingredients, have negotiated rights to reject products based on oxidation and use an ISO-certified fulfillment center specialized and certified for food warehousing and fulfillment.

The New Probiotic Strain That Allows You To Eat Carbs Again, How GLP-1 Peptide Actually Works And Why It's Not Intended For Everyone14 Oct 202300:51:16

You might've heard me say it before: "The gut is the second brain."

With over two decades of leadership in biotech, pharma, and academia, my guest on today's show, Colleen Cutliffe, is gut-deep :) in microbiome knowledge. Her path, spanning from the hallowed halls of Johns Hopkins University to groundbreaking initiatives at Pacific Biosciences and Elan Pharmaceuticals, showcases an unyielding curiosity about the mysteries of the human body. Now, as the driving force behind Pendulum Therapeutics, Colleen is charting new territories in the world of the microbiome.

Akkermansia muciniphila, one of Pendulum's products, is a unique oval-shaped bacterium that thrives in the human gastrointestinal tract. This anaerobic microbe predominantly resides at the junction between oxygen-rich and oxygen-depleted zones of the intestines. Found in about 90% of healthy individuals, it constitutes 1% to 3% of your fecal microbiota. However, its prevalence can decrease with age or certain diseases.

In today's chat, Colleen unravels the enigma of the gut-brain axis and its monumental influence on the microbiome's functionality. She sheds light on the role of natural agents like berberine, bitter melon extract, apple cider vinegar, and even pharmaceuticals like metformin in regulating blood sugar. With insights into the importance of Akkermansia muciniphila in GLP-1 production and the captivating genetic variations within the microbiome, this conversation promises a comprehensive look at gut health like never before.

Is Customizing Your Diet & Exercise Based On Your Genetics A Complete Health Scam?19 Dec 201501:06:25

In the podcast episode High Protein Breakfast Myths, Genetic Testing For Exercise, Demystifying Brain Waves & More!, I interviewed Matt Reimann about ph360.me, a smart health app based on personalized epigenetics and gene expression.

After that interview, I received an onslaught of questions, comment and relatively disturbing feedback about the "customized" online dashboard Matt and I discussed. People were concerned about everything from a daily recommendation for soy lecithin and sunflower oil, to high amounts of animal protein, to exercise recommendations that seemed too basic and not really customized at all.

So in today's podcast (and the screenshot video in this post), I got Matt on a call to review all my personal ph360.me results via both audio and video. During our discussion, I ask Matt some hard questions, and you'll discover:

-Why some foods that are very healthy for one person can wreak metabolic havoc in your own body...

-How your epigenetics can tell you the time of year you should go on vacation, and exactly the kind of places you should go to...

-How the type of exercises you choose affect your organ function and the fascia surrounding the organs in your body...

-Why pushups work for some people, and will injure the shoulder and chest complex in others...

-How the kind of people you hang out with will affect important hormones such as testosterone and oxytocin...

-The difference between Body Mass Index and Body Fat Index...

-Matt's full response to many of the frustrated comments that came in from listeners using pH360 who felt hampered by food choices and exercise choices being recommended to them by pH360...

-And much more!

Why Healthy People Get Broken Guts, And What You Can Do About It.16 Dec 201501:03:48

BenGreenfieldFitness.com/brokengut You've probably seen it before. The classic photo of a marathoner bent over the road, puking their guts out. Or a triathlete hunched over with abdominal pain on the bike. Or the bodybuilder wandering around the gym with persistent annoying gas, the weekend warrior unable to get through a single run without bloating or diarrhea, or the health nut who seems to be constantly constipated no matter what they do. Today, we're going to delve into why apparently healthy people, especially athletes and exercise enthusiasts, get broken guts, and what they can do about it.

Dr. Michael Ruscio is considered a leader in the functional medicine movement, as both a clinician and lecturer. He frequently speaks nationally to health care professionals as well as to the public. Dr. Ruscio has lectured at UC Berkeley, at the Ancestral Health Society and performed numerous interviews. Dr. Ruscio is a post graduate continuing education provider at Life Chiropractic College West. He has a clinical practice in Northern California where he specializes in functional medicine and sees patients both domestically and internationally. He is currently writing a book on digestive conditions and thyroid disease. He is also currently working toward launching a clinical trial in his office in 2015. Dr. Ruscio obtained his Doctorate of Chiropractic from Life Chiropractic College West and has completed post-doctoral specialty training in Functional Medicine. Prior to his specialty training, Dr. Ruscio obtained his B.S. in Exercise Science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

-Dr. Ruscio's personal diet, and what his typical day looks like (including his meal of choice at Whole Foods)...

-The surprising things that happen to your gut when you combine calories and high levels of physical activity...

-Whether athletes should fast, and what happens when an exercise enthusiast "stops the flow of calories" and fasts...

-How an "elemental diet" works to reduce stress on the gut...

-When you actually should consider starving the bacteria in your gut... -Whether you can combat "overstressing" the gut with food by simply using things like digestive enzymes...

-The biggest mistake most people make with cleanses, enemas and detoxing... -How you can heal damage to the valves passing through your gut...

-If you could test anything and everything going in your gut, what you should test...

-And much more!

This study was in the journal Gut in 2014:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25021423  This study compared activity level and diet of professional Rugby players to that of non-athletes of similar size, sex and age. ·        Your gut contains many sensors called toll-like receptors or TLRs.  These TLRs are responsible for monitoring “stuff” in the gut; specifically they help us identify good stuff from bad stuff. ·        Exercise may modulate these sensors http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25825908  and even prevent them from telling your immune system to attack.  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17201071  Remember too much “attack” signaling can occur in autoimmune conditions.        It has been shown that hormones releases during exercise, like noradrenaline, stimulate the growth of non-pathogenic, commensal (aka ‘good’) E.Coli, as well as other gram-negative bacteria. o    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12412628 o    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1731173 o   E. Coli probiotics have shown impressive results for treating inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease) o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15479682 o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10466665 o   and IBS o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22130826 o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18331331   However, just because some exercise is good does not mean more is better.  It has been shown that those who perform extreme levels of exercise are at increased risk for infection.   o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11050532 o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16558471 o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10910297 o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11050537 o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10893023   Too much exercise may also cause leaky gut http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23134759 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23075554 This is likely because too much exercise can cause immune suppression.  This hints at the importance of balance.  For example other studies have shown moderate exercise may also reduce levels of colon cancer, while excessive amounts may be damaging to your gut. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11171839       Mice who get physical activity show increased fermentation of prebiotics and well as a decreased inflammatory response. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25695388 o    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18256465     Other animal studies also show exercise reduces intestinal inflammation o    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22647663 o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20510350 o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18317386        Exercising without a break may be the most stressful on your body.  For example short circuits with not rest or prolonged cardiovascular exercise with no rest may be the more problematic for those trying to recover from burnout or illness.  o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22561973 o   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23667795   The most important factor is ensuring you are exercising enough, but not too much.     If you are ill or trying to recover from burnout, I recommend:
  • Getting light activity, outside (ideally in a forest-like environment) and preferably with a friend.
  • Start with 1-2 days a week, around 20-30 minutes and push yourself hard enough to break a light sweat.  Pay attention to the signs of overtraining.  If you do not experience any of these you can slowly ramp up your amount of exercise.
  • HRV (heart rate variability) is a simple and very inexpensive way to monitor yourself.
See here for more, http://drruscio.com/hrv-novel-tool-assessing-stress-levels-podcast-28/ ·        Exercise is an example of how we can modulate our internal environment making our bodies a hospitable place for good bacteria to grow.  By obtaining the appropriate amount of exercise you will modulate your immune system to allow more good bacteria to growth, thus optimizing your microbiota and overall health.

Standing Desks, Memory Foam & The Science Of Walking Barefoot In Shoes.15 Dec 201500:28:18

In my video "How Should You Stand At A Standing Desk", one of the items I highlight is a springy, soft and supple standing mattress made from a special reactive material that allows my foot to sink in deep and then spring right back to the original position - creating a unique float-like sensation, kind of like a memory foam for the feet.

This mat, called a "kyBounder" encourages my body to constantly make small movements in order to maintain balance and posture. This rebounding effect causes muscles to tense and relax reciprocally, exercising the muscles in my feet, legs and core while I'm standing, and it's good for balance and coordination too. The KyBounder mat and the entire kybun brand (which also makes special "walking-on-air shoes" that allow you to simulate running barefoot while still wearing shoes) was founded in 2007 by Karl Müller. According to the Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung, Karl Müller is one of the most innovative entrepreneurs in Switzerland, and has "re-written design history".

Since I'm standing every day on the mat that Karl designed, and since he sounds like a pretty fascinating guy, I decided to invite him onto this premium podcast for an interview to learn how he created this mat and shoes after being inspired by walking in rice patty fields in South Korea.

In this show, you'll discover: On a personal level, I'm very curious to learn about the path and major turning points for Karl: -How Karl left Switzerland to South Korea, became a self-sufficient farmer, then lost all his money creating drug rehabilitation facilities... -Why a mat or a shoe with the correct softness and elasticity doesn't make your foot weaker but actually makes your foot stronger... -How you can use Kybun shoes and mats to spend several hours a day of improving posture, core and recovery without any additional time investment...

Dr. David Minkoff and I go way back. I first met this MD and 41 time Ironman triathlon finisher at the Half-Ironman World Championships in Florida six years ago, and interviewed him a few weeks later in the podcast episode "A Peek Into The Life of An Ironman, Natural Medicine Physician."

Then, he helped me with metal detoxification using a metal chelating spray he designed, and I interviewed him about this in the podcast "How Hidden Sources Of Heavy Metals Are Destroying Your Health, And What You Can Do About It."

He also helped me with my son's exercise induced asthma, which is now completely eliminated using the techniques Dr. Minkoff introduced me to in the podcast "Why More Kids Are Getting Exercise Induced Asthma, and What You Can Do About It."

Now Dr. Minkoff is back. And he's back to fill us in on amino acids, branched chain amino acids, ketosis, bonking and more! During our discussion, you'll discover:

-The shocking story of how Dr. Minkoff reversed his wife's MS by detoxifying the mercury build-up in her body...

-The exact dosage of amino acids Dr. Minkoff used to completely heal a hamstring injury...

-The important difference between amino acids, protein powder and food-based protein from sources like steak and eggs...

-Why BCAA's and EAA's are much different, and why EAA's are not turned into sugar in the body...

-How to use EAA's during periods of ketosis or carbohydrate restriction...

-How long before a workout to use EAA's and how many to use during a workout...

-How many amino acids you can safely take on a daily basis...

-How to use EAA's for intermittent fasting, controlling carbohydrate cravings and fat loss...  -And much more!

------------------------------

More About Dr. Minkoff: Dr. Minkoff graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1974 and was elected to the “Phi Beta Kappa” of medical schools, the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Fraternity for very high academic achievement. He then worked as an attending physician in infectious disease, co-directed a neo-natal intensive care unit and worked in emergency medicine until 1995. In 1997, his interest in alternative and complementary medicine led him to open LifeWorks Wellness Center, which has become one of the foremost alternative medicine clinics in the U.S. His search to find a source of the highest quality nutritional supplements led him to establish BodyHealth in 2000, a resource that could provide doctors with the best possible supplementation and education for their patients. Today, his BodyHealth products are used by hundreds of practitioners and individual consumers who seek all-natural wellness and detoxification supplements with a demonstrated high level of quality and effectiveness. In addition to their use by patients looking to heal disease, the BodyHealth products are also used by sports enthusiasts interested in achieving and maintaining optimal performance. As a 40-time Ironman triathlon finisher, (including 8 appearances at the Ironman World Championships) Dr. Minkoff has first-hand experience to help athletes achieve optimum conditioning. His expertise in protein synthesis, detoxification, and nutrition allow them to run, swim, and bike faster and longer.

The Quantlet: The World's First Wearable That Uses Cold & Light To Shut Down Inflammation, Enhance Sleep, Improve Cognition & Amplify Performance.05 Dec 201501:03:00
Today, you get to learn about a new wearable device that gives you all the benefits of cold thermogenesis...   ...via a tiny device that you wear your wrist like a wristwatch.   But this device goes way beyond that, including generating infrared light that induces a release of nitric oxide and ATP, reducing travel and jet lag symptoms, inducing sleep, shutting down inflammation...   ...and much more.   You must listen to this episode. My mind was blown.

My guest is Ruben Salinas. Ruben is a Harvard MBA graduate, an inventor, medical devices entrepreneur and angel investor and EMT with a track record of product development in the areas of spectroscopy, medical devices and diagnostics. He is also an avid biohacker and is featured in the upcoming documentary film “Supercharged”, along with Dave Asprey, Wim Hof, Abel James and Dr. Jack Kruse. He is also currently the President & CEO of a company focused on the development of diagnostics in the women’s health arena. Before that, he was Chairman of PowerMedic Systems, a medical laser company and CEO of MPI, Inc., a company he acquired via a leveraged buyout. And before that, he held Product Management and Engineering positions at GE Healthcare and GE Lighting. Since graduating as a Harvard MBA, he has bought, sold and started several companies mainly in the medical space. His proudest moments, however, happen in his prototyping lab where he gets to apply his biomedical engineering skills and delve into his latest venture, a venture we are going to talk about today... ...because Ruben is, in addition to the impressive list above, the Chairman of Quantum Dynamics, a company currently developing a wearable device called the Quantlet.

What is the Quantlet? Basically, it is a wearable that produces two things: cold and light. Why cold? Physical performance is deeply tied to your body’s temperature. When you get hot, your performance suffers. This is because key respiratory proteins and cellular enzymes change shape and may even malfunction if they overheat, which impacts certain metabolic processes. Keeping the body cool during exercise or exertion can therefore help you better perform. Cold Thermogenesis (CT), as it is known scientifically, is an exciting new area of research which has recently shown positive effects on thyroid function, fat loss, exercise efficiency and inflammation reduction. This is because recent studies have found that adults have more brown adipose tissue (BAT) than was previously believed, which can significantly increase energy expenditure in response to cold exposure. Why light? The use of visible and near-infrared (NIR) light for reducing pain, inflammation and edema, has been known for almost forty years. The effects of photobiomodulation, as it is known scientifically, are photochemical – just like photosynthesis in plants. When the correct power, frequency and application time are used, light reduces oxidative stress and increases ATP. This in turn improves cell metabolism and reduces inflammation. In recent studies, photobiomodulation has demonstrated increased exercise capacity and longer exercise times, as well as improved biomarkers (including reduced lactate, creatine kinase, and CRP) after exercise in people treated with red and infrared light. Photobiomodulation has also been reported to release certain brain compounds that positively affect mood and sleep.

During today's podcast, you'll discover:

-Why irradiating your blood with light is one of the most powerful vasodilation techniques known to man...

-Why it's crucial that you figure out how to reduce your blood thickness, especially if you travel and or if you get jet lag...

-How light exposure and a process called photobiomodulation induces the release of nitric oxide...

-Why (until now) science hasn't yet discovered how to get the positive benefits of light and cold at the same time...

-How a thermo-electric cooler works and why it allows you to fool your body into not vasoconstricting in response to cold...

-When you should use light and cold, for how long, and when not to use light and cold... -Whether the Quantlet produces Bluetooth, WiFi or other EMF frequencies...

-How well the Quantlet holds up under conditions like water immersion or workouts...

-And much more!

A Navy SEAL Physician Reveals How Hard-Charging, High-Achievers Can Fall Asleep Fast02 Dec 201500:58:05

Meet Dr. Kirk Parsley (pictured above), affectionately known as "Doc Parsley".

Doc Parsley is a former Navy SEAL. He received his Medical Degree from Bethesda, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) in 2004. He interned in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Balboa Naval Hospital San Diego in 2005 and subsequently completed a Navy residency in Hyperbarics and Diving Medicine in 2006. He served as an Undersea Medical Officer at Naval Special Warfare Group One from June 2009 to January 2013. While there, he led the development and supervised the group’s first Sports Medicine Rehabilitation center. And in addition to being able to kill you with his pinky finger, he's a total sleep nerd. Doc Parsley has been a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 2006 and served as Naval Special Warfare’s expert on Sleep Medicine. After leaving the Navy he went into concierge medicine and consulting. He consults on sleep for multiple corporations, and professional athletes, teams and individual clients, including the Navy SEALs. He lectures worldwide on sleep, wellness, anti-aging and hormonal optimization. But wait, I'm not done... Doc Parsley is also a bit of a chemist, and his supplement formulations are used to help the world’s most elite fighting organization: the Navy SEALs. He designs sleep products to compensate for the toxic environment that SEALs find themselves living in - high stress, heavily processed foods, and insufficient sleep, and his brand new "Sleep Cocktail" is the first sleep product designed specifically for hard-charging, high-achievers to fall asleep fast. I know that I talk a lot about different pills, capsules, powders and oils that can help you sleep, but this Sleep Cocktail stuff is one of the most potent that I've used lately, and worth a try, especially if nothing else seems to be working for you. So now you can tap into the same stuff Doc Parsley is feeding the SEALs, and in today's podcast we get to talk about that, the unique mix of Sleep Cocktail ingredients, sleep cycles, melatonin, jet lag, and much, much more.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-The shocking things that happen to your body while you are sleeping if you take Ambien or Valium...

-Why the GABA in sleep supplements doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier (and how to actually make GABA cross your blood-brain barrier)...

-Why you must shut down your neocortex if you want to get true, restorative sleep...

-The biggest nutrient deficiencies that keep you from falling asleep...

-One big disturbing fact about physicians and sleep... -Why you "wake up" in middle of night when melatonin wears off...

-How to manage jet lag symptoms with supplementation protocol...

-If you can take sleep supplements when you wake up at, say, 4 or 5am and you want to sleep until 7am...

-And much more!

Mushroom Lies: Why Most Medicinal Mushroom Supplements Are Chock Full Of Grain & Dangerous Compounds, And What You Can Do About It.28 Nov 201500:59:51

Last year, my friend Skye Chilton visited my house. One night, he sat down at my kitchen table and spread out an array of colorful mushrooms, including cordyceps, a mushroom well-known for it's athletic performance enhancing capabilities (and one that I recently tweeted this study about). "Taste this." Skye said, as he handed me a standard, commercial cordyceps product. It was tasteless, flavorless and a bland brownish color. I didn't care for it. Then he gave me another handful of cordyceps. This different blend was a rich, reddish-brown color, and had a powerful, potent, medicinal taste. Within just a couple minutes I felt a surge of energy. The difference between these two mushroom extracts was noticeable, palatable, and significant. So what makes one mushroom extract different from another? Do medicinal mushrooms have different benefits depending on how they are grown, what stage they are harvested in, or where they are sourced? How do you actually use mushrooms in your daily life? In today's podcast, you'll get all these answers and more from Skye's father, Jeff Chilton, who wrote a book called "The Mushroom Cultivator: A Practical Guide to Growing Mushrooms at Home", which Skye gave me after he left my house, and which I realized after I read it is the most comprehensive guide on medicinal mushrooms I've ever seen. In the 1980's he operated a commercial mushroom spawn laboratory, and in 1989 he started one of the first medicinal mushroom businesses in North America. His company, Nammex, sells certified organic mushroom extracts to nutritional supplement businesses in the US, Canada and worldwide. During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Why you should add mushroom extracts such as reishi, shitaake, cordyceps to a morning cup of coffee...

-The important difference between medicinal mushroom and the kind of mushrooms you eat as food...

-How to cut through the confusion of which mushroom extracts are actually quality and which are a complete waste of your money...

-Why some mushrooms just contain grain, with very little actual mushroom extract...

-An easy way you can use an iodine dropper test yourself at home to see if a mushroom contains a bunch of cheap starch...   -The medical condition that some people have which indicates they should avoid eating mushrooms...   -Whether psychedelic mushrooms are safe, or have any helpful utilization...   -And much more!   Resources from this episode:   -The Mushroom Cultivator book by Jeff Chilton   -FourSigmaFoods mushroom extracts (the ones Ben uses)   -Jeff's company "Real Mushrooms" on Amazon   Do you have questions, comments or feedback about medicinal mushrooms? Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Rachel Browne, the NEW Podcast Sidekick.

How To Know If Your Brain Is Damaged

Terrence says: He heard that you recently took up boxing. He's an MMA fighter and is always worried about traumatic brain injury - he takes turmeric and fish oil regularly. But he's wondering if HRV can be used as an indicator of TBI or if not, are there any biomarkers specifically of brain trauma and brain inflammation that he should be aware of and on the look out for?

In my response, I recommend: -TianChi -How To Heal From A Concussion podcast -DirectLabs CRP Test and Inflammatory Cytokine test -HeartMath website What Is The Best Way To Filter Your Water?

Julia says: She's on the go and often ends up buying a lot of bottle water. She's wondering if you have the chance to evaluate any filters for handheld bottles?

In my response, I recommend: -Structured water filter (the one Ben uses in his home) -OralIV (use 20% discount code BEN20) -Klean Kanteen with Kishu Charcoal Sticks -Bobble - Bobble's sleek water bottle comes in three sizes and many different colors. The carbon filter removes chlorine and organic contaminants. -Camelbak - Camelbak's durable bottle has a carrying handle and spill-proof bite valve. The filter reduces chlorine, taste, and odor. -Vapur - Vapur's water bottle is collapsible, making it easy to stash and carry. The filter removes 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of protozoa. -Hydros -The Hydros filtering water bottle has a unique side opening for ease in filling up at water fountains and taps. The filter reduces chlorine, chloramines, and particulates. How To Get Rid Of Candida

Chrissy says: She's wondering if you can provide information to get rid of candida overgrowth for good. Since September last year she's had recurring UTI's and yeast infections, she's started taking supplements like anti-fungals, probiotics, fermented foods she eats paleo/gluten free, but every time she goes off her supplements it comes back. She doesn't want to depend on supplements to keep her body in check and she's trying to figure out how to get her gut/bacteria balance back in order.

In my response, I recommend: -GAPS diet or SCD Diet -The Candida Cleanse 5 Ways To Stay Healthy In The Armed Forces

This is a protected Premium podcast episode! Click here to get this - and over 300 additional hidden episodes, .pdf's, videos - for just $9.99/year inside the BenGreenfieldFitness Premium channel.

That guy in the photo above climbing the tree like an ancient ape is Tony Federico. Tony is one of the leaders of the Paleo movement, and a guy I met several years ago at the PaleoFx conference. He is the host of the Paleo Magazine Radio podcast, editor of Paleo Fitness Magazine, and the author of "Paleo Grilling: A Modern Caveman's Guide to Cooking with Fire". In addition to his work in the Paleo community, Tony is a full-time personal trainer with 10 years of experience in the fitness industry... ...and he's quite knowledgeable on living ancestrally in a modern world, even if you don't have any desire to be a coconut-collecting caveman.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-How Tony has biohacked his office to make it more ancestral...

-Why sitting isn't necessarily evil...

-How you can figure out what's ancestral and what's not...

-How you can sleep ancestrally, yet still live a modern life with streetlights, car headlights, night work, etc...

-How you can tweak your electronic environment at work to be more ancestral...

-Whether Crossfit, Spartan, triathlons, etc. are ancestral forms of movement...

-And much more!

Can Weed Really Shrink Your Brain?21 Nov 201500:58:38

A few weeks ago, I talked on this podcast episode about whether THC can cause damage to the grey matter in your brain.

But, frankly, I spent very little time addressing the matter on that particular show, so in today's episode, I'm revisiting the topic of THC, brain damage, liver damage, myths about marijuana, CBD, smart drugs, nootropics and more with Dr. Andrew Hill, Lead Neuroscientist at truBrain, and one smart cookie.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Why left-handed people are more sensitive to chemical stimulants...

-The truth behind the evidence that THC can shrink the brain...

-The important differences between THC and CBD...

-How Dr. Hill can "reset" tolerance to marijuana using neurofeedback in his clinic...

-If there is a deleterious effect of THC on the liver or other organs...

-How to map your brain and change your brain using neurofeedback...

-Little known smart drug ingredients such as oxiracetam and centrophenoxine...

-And much more, including a killer giveaway at the end of the show!

Unlocking The Superpowers Of Speed Reading, Memory Enhancement, Learning Skills Faster & More With Jim Kwik.18 Nov 201501:11:32

My guest in today's podcast is Jim Kwik (yes, that's his real name). Jim Kwik is really, really...well...quick. He can learn much faster than mere mortals. Take reading, for example. Most folks read at a rate of 200-250 words-per-minute (wpm). But Jim reads heavy science material at about 500 wpm and devours light fiction at upwards of 1300 wpm. And more importantly, he can remember everything he reads. I'm seen Jim on stage, memorizing the names of every face in the crowd. And long strings of random numbers. Many people struggle to remember all seven digits of a phone number. But Jim can remember phone numbers all day long. Hundreds of them. But Jim isn't special. He doesn't naturally have these superpowers. They were learned. And if he can learn them, anyone can learn them - regardless of age, background or education.

In today's podcast, you're going to discover the amazing story of how Jim went from a childhood brain injury to being one the smartest guys with one of the fastest brains on the face of the planet.  During our discussion, you'll discover:

-How Jim became a memory and learning expert, even after a debilitating head injury...

-Why you shouldn't let school get in the way of your education...

-Whether it's true that we only use part of our brains...

-How technology can make you stupid if you use it incorrectly... -The three stages of learning you must know...

-The exact process and system Jim uses when he sits down to learn a new skill or task or language...

-What you can learn from Jim's recent conversation with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger...

-Five easy ways you can remember names better...

-Jim's top tips for becoming a speed-reader who actually remembers what you read...

-The specific diet Jim follows to help his brain achieve peak function...

-The 4 free videos that you can get from JimKwik.com/ben...

-And much more!

More about Jim: Jim is founder of Kwik Learning and a widely recognized world expert in speed-reading, memory improvement, brain performance and accelerated learning. For two decades he has served as the mental coach to students and seniors, entrepreneurs and educators, and advisor to many of the world’s leading CEOs and celebrities. After a childhood brain injury left him learning challenged, Jim created strategies to dramatically enhance his mental performance. He has since dedicated his life to helping others unleash their true genius and brainpower to learn anything faster and live a life of greater power, productivity and purpose. Jim’s cutting edge techniques, entertaining presentation style, and impressive brainpower feats have made him a frequent and highly sought out trainer for top organizations, with clients that include Virgin, Nike, Zappos, SpaceX, NYU, GE, Fox Studios, Harvard, and Singularity University, and his online courses are used by students in over 100 countries.

Do you have questions, comments or feedback about speed-reading, enhancing memory, learning new things faster or anything else Jim and I discuss? Leave your thoughts at BenGreenfieldFitness.com, and remember to get your four free videos at JimKwik.com/ben!

How To Use Space-Age Technology To Banish Heavy Legs Forever, Run Faster, Increase Nitric Oxide Production, Enhance Flexibility & More.16 Nov 201500:41:31

Nearly six years ago, in a tiny hotel room lobby in Kona, Hawaii, I met a guy named Gilad Jacobs. Gilad was holding a black box about the size of a shoebox, and had two big, space-agey looking boots with him, which attached to the box via two air tubes. I fumbled my way into the slightly awkward, hip-high boots, then sat in a chair as the black box pumped air in and out of the boots. I'll admit: six years ago it was a little hokey, and I wasn't quite sure whether the things actually worked to make my legs "more fresh". But since then, Gilad and that tiny black box have come a long way. His company NormaTec is now one of the world's leader in rapid recovery, and give a competitive edge to a host of the world’s elite athletes, coaches, and trainers, including...

Pro triathletes like: -Craig Alexander -Helle Frederiksen -Chrissie Wellington -Jordan Rapp -Terenzo Bozzone -Mirinda Carfrae -TJ Tollakson -Jesse Thomas -Gwen Jorgensen -Jan Frodeno -Sarah Haskins -Linsey Corbin -Heather Wurtele -Trevor Wurtele -Marino Vanhoenacker -Kim Schwabenbauer

Pro cyclists like: -Taylor Phinney -Clara Hughes -David Zabriskie -George Hincapie -Levi Leipheimer Pro runners like: -Deena Kastor -Meb Keflezighi -Ryan Hall -Dan Huling -Kristen Fryburg-Zaitz -Tyler McCandless -Alan Webb

Crossfit athletes like: -Noah Olsen -Annie Tunnicliffe -Jason Khalipa -Michele Letendre -Crossfit Invictus -Crossfit NorCal

NBA basketball players like: -Roy Hibbert -Steve Nash -Ray Allen -DJ Augustin -Jason Terry -Kevin Garnett -Shaquille O’Neal -Al Harrington -Amare Stoudemire -Chris Wilcox -Dorell Wright -Ekpe Udoh -Monta Ellis -Kara Lawson

NFL football players like: -Larry Fitzgerald -Matt Shaughnessy -Patrick Willis -Vernon Davis -Adrian Wilson -Deion Branch -Jerod Mayo -Kevin Faulk -Tyson Jackson -Earl Bennett -Richard Seymour -Darrius Heyward-Bey -Kevin Faulk -Devin McCourty -Jason McCourty

Those old-school boots I tried on many years ago have now evolved into something called the NormaTec PULSE Recovery Systems, a dynamic compression device designed for recovery and rehab, and something I personally use nearly every day now. The NormaTec systems include a control unit and attachments which go on the legs, arms, or hips. They use compressed air to massage your limbs, mobilize fluid, and speed recovery with a pulsed massage pattern. When you use a Normatec system, you will first experience a pre-inflate cycle, during which the connected attachments are molded to your exact body shape. The session will then begin by compressing your feet, hands, or upper quad (depending on which attachment you are using). Similar to the kneading and stroking done during a massage, each segment of the attachment will first compress in a pulsing manner and then release. This will repeat for each segment of the attachment as the compression pattern works its way up your limb. Today, I interview Gilad, who serves as Vice President of Sports Medicine at NormaTec Industries, LP. He leads NormaTec's Sports Medicine division, which he established in 2007, and is responsible for sales to pro teams, top college and Olympic programs, and elite and amateur athletes.

During our discussion, you'll discover: -How these space-age boots took the leap from being a pure medical device to being an underground method for athletes to recover faster... -The main differences between pulsed compression in the compression boots and regular compression from something like compression socks and compression tights... -What happens biomechanically when you wear the boots, particularly for flexibility, arterial function, pumping of blood and lymph... -Two chemicals that get released in response to pulsed compression that massively dilate the arteries... -How the Normatec system can compress your hips and your arms... -And much more!

-Study: DYNAMIC COMPRESSION ENHANCES PRESSURE-TO-PAIN THRESHOLD IN ELITE ATHLETE RECOVERY: EXPLORATORY STUDY

-Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research 2015 May; 29(5):1263-72 "The purpose of this study was to assess peristaltic pulse dynamic compression (PPDC) in reducing short-term pressure-to-pain threshold (PPT) among Olympic Training Center athletes after morning training. [...] We conclude that PPDC is a promising means of accelerating and enhancing recovery after the normal aggressive training that occurs in Olympic and aspiring Olympic athletes." —view article on pubmed.

-Study: PERISTALTIC PULSE COMPRESSION UPREGULATES PGC-1Α AND ENOS IN HUMAN MUSCLE TISSUE - Experimental Physiology 2015 May 15 "We investigated whether a single 60 min bout of whole-leg, lower pressure external pneumatic compression (EPC) altered select vascular, metabolic, antioxidant and inflammation-related mRNAs. [...] An acute bout of EPC transiently upregulates PGC-1α mRNA, while also upregulating eNOS protein and NOx concentrations in vastus lateralis biopsy samples" —view article on pubmed.

-Study: PERISTALTIC PULSE COMPRESSION OF THE LOWER EXTREMITY ENHANCES FLEXIBILITY - Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research 2014 Apr; 28(4):1058-64 "This study investigated the effects of peristaltic pulse dynamic compression (PPDC) on range-of-motion (ROM) changes in forward splits. [...] PPDC provides a means of rapidly enhancing acute ROM requiring less discomfort and time." —view article on pubmed.

-Study: PERIPHERAL CONDUIT AND RESISTANCE ARTERY FUNCTION ARE IMPROVED FOLLOWING PERISTALTIC PULSE COMPRESSION - European Journal of Applied Physiology 2015 May 16 "The purpose of this study was to determine the acute effects of a single bout of peristaltic pulse EPC on peripheral conduit and resistance artery function. [...] Acutely, whole limb, lower pressure EPC improves conduit artery endothelial function systemically, but only improves RH blood flow locally (i.e., compressed limbs)." —view article on pubmed.

Lightning Speed Healing Hack or Overpriced Fad? What You Need To Know About Stem Cells.14 Nov 201501:06:40

From Regenokine treatments to edible phytoplankton drops to NFL players traveling to Europe for stem cell injections that would be illegal in the USA, it seems that stem cells are the hot new arrival on the recovery and anti-aging scene. I distinctly recall my first experience with injecting cells into the human body. I was a young, bright-eyed hip and knee surgical salesman, and the company I worked for at the time (Biomet) had just developed a post-surgical procedure called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). This PRP process involved collecting and then centrifuging a patient's blood to separate the platelet-poor plasma and red blood cells. The platelets are concentrated about five-fold, and then re-injected into the wound site to speed up healing. I later thought this was such a cool process for other issues, like knee and elbow pain, that I partnered with a physician to purchase a PRP machine for treating the athletes and clients who I worked with, many of whom had uncanny and "miraculous" injury and inflammation reversals. But compared to PRP, stem cells are a whole new animal, and in this podcast with my guest Shawn Stevenson, we dive into the legality, the conflicts, the long-term health the potential for doping, the alternatives, the costs and much more.

Shawn (pictured right) is a bestselling author and creator of The Model Health Show, which is often featured as the #1 Health podcast in the country on iTunes. A graduate of The University of Missouri - St. Louis, Shawn studied biology and kinesiology, and went on to be the founder of Advanced Integrative Health Alliance, a company that provides wellness services for individuals and organizations worldwide. Shawn has been featured in Men's Health magazine, Entrepreneur magazine, ESPN, FOX News, and many other media outlets.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-The crazy story of how Shawn's hip broke while he was running, and the broken medical system that nearly destroyed his entire gut while fixing his hip...

-How Shawn regenerated his spine, which doctor's told him was "the spine of an 80 year old man"...

-The four different types of stem cells, and which ones work best for killing pain, healing injuries and decreasing inflammation...

-The two surprising ways you can find and harvest stem cells without using embryos...

-How new human body parts can literally be regrown after being injured...

-How Shawn skipped any blood centrifuging, bone marrow injections or stem cell therapies and instead used specific foods to increase stem cell growth in his own joints...

-The exact ingredients of Shawn's most potent medicinal tea recipe...

-Why both Ben and Shawn stuff mushrooms into vodka bottles...

-And much more!

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Rachel Browne, the NEW Podcast Sidekick.

How To Lower High Cortisol

Dean says: He's a masters athlete - a road cyclist. He also has a high stress job and a 'wound up' personality. He's been in a cycle of everything going great with training, then he gets sick, has to reset, goes great with training and the cycle starts all over again. He had a conversation with his physio about elevated cortisol levels and the impact a stressful lifestyle can have on cortisol. He's interested to hear your opinion on how elevated cortisol can make you sick, even if you're very fit and what can be done naturally to work around it, and particularly the role that caffeine may have on elevated cortisol.

In my response, I recommend: -The Cortisol Connection book -Seven best ways to stop stress -Supplements:

-Chinese adaptogenic herbs such as TianChi or InnerPeace, which can fine-tune your adrenals and help you to begin producing cortisol and adrenaline.

-High electrolyte intake, preferably with liquid trace minerals or quality salt, both of which can restore precious minerals that your body tends to lose when you're low on cortisol.

-High dose vitamin D/K complex 35IU/Vitamin D per pound of body weight and huge amounts of morning sun exposure to ensure that you produce the necessary building blocks to restore hormones.

-2,000 to 5,000 milligrams of a whole foods Vitamin C source each day (or basically, as much vitamin C as you can take until you get lose bowels). Your adrenal glands are one of the #1 storage sources of Vitamin C in your body, and to become severely depleted in Vitamin C in a case of adrenal fatigue.

-4-6g per day of a good fish oil that contains vitamin E with mixed tocopherols (I recommend SuperEssentials) to reduce inflammation and restore the health of the nervous system.

-A B-complex supplement that is high in B6 and pantothenic acid, both of which tend to be severely depleted during adrenal fatigue (I recommend Lifeshotz for this).

-Red ginseng at approximately 6g/day, which stimulates the body to begin producing cortisol again.

-Licorice root extract at 200-400 mg, which reduces the half-life of cortisol and allows it to be broken down at a slower rate by the body.

Natural Ways To Avoid Getting Schizophrenia

Ryan says: His grandmother was a paranoid schizophrenic. He's worried about becoming schizophrenic himself. He's 24 and has not displayed any symptoms yet. He was hoping that you could give him a list of lifestyle factors like stress and food to avoid any epigenetic expression of schizophrenia. What do you suggest?

In my response, I recommend: -Multivitamin with methyltetrahydrofolate/antioxidants/zinc -Fish oil Can You Use Protein Powder When Breastfeeding?

Danella says: She has been using the MHP Paleo protein which is beef and egg white protein. She noticed when she went to reorder that it wasn't suitable for nursing mums.  She's currently nursing an 8 month old and she couldn't find any information online about why it's not suitable. Can you shed some light on what the issue is, and what protein is OK to use while nursing?

In my response, I recommend: -LivingProtein What Causes A Low HRV?

Shane says: He's been testing his HRV with Sweetbeat for a couple of months and he's consistently low - between 17-35. He pegs the stress meter even when he turns the sensitivity to the lowest. What does it mean when HRV is that low? When can he find something specific?

In my response, I recommend: -NatureBeat

The Underground Test That Shows You How To Legally Upgrade Your EPO, Increase Your Oxygen Levels, Boost Your Red Blood Cells & Build Double-Digit Percentages In Power And Endurance.07 Nov 201500:53:45

You may remember Christopher Kelly from the podcast episode "The Little Known Test That Tells You Everything You Need To Know About Your Metabolism" and "7 Signs Your Cortisol & Adrenals Are Broken".

In today's episode, Chris is back, along with special guest Dr. Tommy Wood. The reason I've invited Chris back on the podcast is because he recently wrote me about new methods he's been using to identify how to increase EPO, increase oxygen consumption, beat anemia, boost red blood cells, and get double-digit percentage increases in power and endurance. I'm always looking for insider tips on how to maximize my own athletic performance, so figured it would be a good idea to have Chris on to talk about these new, little-known testing and treatment methods. Christopher Kelly is a computer scientist, pro mountain biker, certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and graduate of the Kalish Institute. Chris is British but lives in California where he runs the functional medicine practice Nourish Balance Thrive. Chris has been on the podcast twice before, once to talk about salivary hormone testing for adrenal fatigue, and once to talk about organic acid testing. My other guest, Dr. Tommy Wood is a qualified medical doctor, graduating from Oxford University in 2011. He has a previous Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences and Biochemistry from Cambridge University. After working as a junior doctor in the UK for two years, Dr Wood is now working towards a Ph.D. in neonatal brain metabolism at the University of Oslo, Norway. During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Why oxygen deliverability is so extremely crucial if you plan to compete at elevation or altitude, or you want to maximize your physical performance...

-The exact blood-building protocol Chris used to get a a 32-watt (9%) improvement in his cycling power at threshold...

-Specific conditions you probably get exposed to that directly shut down your ability to produce red blood cells and EPO and what you can do about it...

-How to know if you're deficient in any of the nutrients required to produce red blood cells...

-The common nutrient deficiencies (which Chris had) that severely hamper your oxygen delivery capabilities, and how to fix them...

-The best way to track and monitor whether excessive red blood cell destruction is occurring...

-Little known ways that you can actually lose red blood cells, and how to test to see if that is happening...

-And much more!

A Near-Death Ecstasy Experience, Passing Up The UFC, Plant Medicine In Christianity & Much More07 Oct 202301:10:38

From the screen glow of an 80's television showcasing Chinese Kung Fu theater to the vibrant arenas of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and "Mortal Kombat," Jeff Durbin's life reads like a reel of adrenaline-packed sequences.

But it wasn't all triumphant rounds and ninja moves; there were battles far more internal and daunting, fights that transcended the visible world.

You might recognize Jeff from the History Channel's "The Stoned Ages," where he took a candid, Christian stance on addiction, or from the documentary film A Storm Comes Rolling Down The Plain. Jeff co-hosts Apologia Radio and Apologia TV, both of which garner followers throughout the U.S. and internationally. (You can find these shows via Apologia Studios). A World Champion martial artist with five black belts, Jeff even appeared as a fighter in MTV’s “The Final Fu.”

Not long after Jeff was married, he began to develop a drug addiction that put a severe strain on his marriage. His alcohol and drug consumption grew to surpass all other priorities. This developed into a dependence on ecstasy, which Jeff overused to the point that he had to take several pills at a time to feel anything. Eventually, this led to a near-death experience by overdose.

In today's episode, we’ll dive into the murky waters of addiction. Is drug and alcohol dependence merely a physical affliction, or is there a spiritual vacuum that perpetuates it? How does Jeff’s own personal experience with addiction inform his perspective? And not shying away from controversial topics, we’ll touch upon the use of plant medicine in spiritual journeys. Prepare for an enthralling look into the world of a man who seamlessly fuses martial arts, faith, and resilience.

Why Surgery Isn't The Only Option For Gallstones

Seth says: He just got diagnosed with Gall Stones and it seems the natural remedies don't work. What's your opinion on them and is surgery his only option?

In my response, I recommend: -Curcumin -Vitamin C -Enzyme with bile acids Why You Should Cry More

Matthew says: He feels really good after crying and is wondering if there's any physiological benefits to it?

In my response, I recommend: - Curcumin vs. Turmeric

Zach says: He's wants a definite low down on turmeric and curcumin. He's an ultra endurance runner who wants to recover faster and upregulate his fat conversion. Should he buy bulk turmeric powder, or turmeric extract supplements or curcumin extract supplements and of those, with or without piperine or black pepper? Is the 95% curcuminoid label play a factor in that decision? What should the dosage be  as a hard-charging athlete and when should it be taken?

In my response, I recommend: -EXOS curcumin (curcumin phytosome) -NatureFlex (turmeric) -Bioperine The Best Way To Track Fat Loss

Jamal says: He owns his own group personal training facility focused on fat loss and he wants to incorporate a tracking measurement. What do you recommend? What's the best way to track fat loss performance?

In my response, I recommend: -Withings Smart Body Analyzer -BodyMetrix Ultrasound Body Fat Analyzer What You Need To Know About NRF2

Billy says: What do you think of the new area of research on NRF2? Most of the research is looking at preventative health approaches but what do you think of it as a strategy for recovery?

In my response, I recommend: -http://www.nrf2.com/ -DNAFit

A Vaginal Weightlifting Coach Reveals Her Secrets On How To Train Your Body For Soul-Stretching, Bed-Shaking, Neighbour-Complaining Sex31 Oct 201500:47:53

Kim Anami, pictured above (yep, she's the one with the weight plate between her legs) travels around the world lifting things with her vagina. Possibly more than you can lift with your biceps.

Anami is an intimacy coach who teaches, among other things, what she calls "vaginal kung fu," along with pelvic floor muscle strengthening, how to have better sex, stronger orgasms, and a host of other sexual health topics. Throughout the year, she runs a series of online courses, which she calls “salons”, on topics with titled such as "Vaginal Kung Fu", "How to Be a Well-F**ked Woman", "Coming Together for Couples" and "Sexual Mastery for Men". So obviously, as you have probably guessed, this is a bit of an explicit episode, but in it, we cover very practical material for enhancing your sexual pleasure, your sexual endurance and your sexual health, including:

-Exactly how to do vaginal weight lifting...

-What it feel like to lift 10 pounds with your vagina, and what kind of weight do you use?

-Why Kegels don't work for urinary incontinence or sexual strengthening...

-The core and glute strengthening exercises that are crucial to include if you're doing vaginal weight lifting...

-How women can train their bodies to have 20 orgasms in a row...

-How do you strike a balance between tantric sex and optimizing your sleep?

-Kim's #1 tip for how men can go longer and have multi-hour "sexercise" sessions...

-The technique Kim uses to "make love to her partner while he is on the other side of the planet"...

-Why Kim uses colostrum and glutamine...

-Kim's feelings about whether men need to restrict ejaculation or orgasms...

-How to have "sex dates" with your partner...

-The form of meditation Kim uses to enhance her sexual energy...

-What Kim thinks about porn, and how porn affects your sex life...

-The single, most natural lubricant you can use to enhance sex...

-And much more!

News Flashes:

Finally, Kevin Carr (who we discussed in episode 334) wrote in to say:

"Hi Ben - Kevin Carr here, I've been a listener of your podcast for the last 6 months - following the completion of my world run, and enjoy the show a lot. Thank you for mentioning my unusual fluid-recycling techniques for extreme long running! I enjoy the show as although I run extreme distances I train very efficiently - for instance throughout the last 5 weeks of the world run I averaged 75km a day, however in training before the run I was running only 4-5 hours a week. I spend more time strength training - both 'maximal strength' and prehab style movement patterns than running - and the proof is in the pudding I ran 16,300 miles in 621 days with zero 'overuse' injuries. I also work at a standing desk - sit as little as possible and wear weights the whole time - essentially live under 'hyper gravity' these techniques amongst others are an incredibly efficient way for runners to train whilst dramatically reducing injury risk - both through over training and through being stronger in the events. I was heavily inspired by William Sichel - a Scottish Ultra Marathon runner who turned his back on 'high mileage' training to develop more efficient/intense ways of training - William is also a ketogenic athlete. Myself I've been training fasted for almost a decade now and recently moved to a cyclical-ketogenic diet. Best of luck in your upcoming 24 hour tough mudder, Kevin."

Cathy says: She's curious about drinking reverse osmosis water or distilled water. A lot of people say its fine and a lot say it's dangerous because it doesn't have the minerals in it and can strip the minerals from your body. A Running Doctor's Unorthodox, Dogma-Defying, Minimalist Approach To Running Fast And Injury-Free.27 Oct 201500:51:29

This is a protected Premium podcast episode! Click here to get this - and over 300 additional hidden episodes, .pdf's, videos - for just $9.99/year inside the BenGreenfieldFitness Premium channel. Here is the extremely entertaining bio from the website of today's guest, Dr. Mark Cucuzzella (written by Bill Katovsky)

"In the beginning there was darkness, and runners seemed lost, confused, chronically injured, always experimenting with “bigger is better” footwear as a potential remedy. Then a new “less is more” approach emerged, a radical way of thinking led by a handful of scientists, athletes, coaches, and charismatic best-selling author. They looked backward to the past for inspiration. Soon, a healer and educator came forth. Collectively, they would become the shepherds to a flock of broken-down, often-sidelined runners accustomed to wearing conventional running shoes.

As it were, this health-conscious individual lived in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, the oldest town in the state and just up the road (and river) from Harpers Ferry. His name is Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, a family physician and an elite runner, who, in his early 40s, can still reel off sub 2:40s at the Boston Marathon. Mark had a singular vision regarding the need to spread the gospel of natural and minimalist running to the masses. In early summer 2010, he opened the first minimalist running store in the nation. He called it Two Rivers Treads because culturally and historically vibrant Shepherdstown is located near the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.

Mark and his tiny store became a fixture in the natural running community. Coaches, athletes, trainers, physical therapists, bloggers, and runners from near and far became connected to one another through Two Rivers Treads..."

As a professor of family medicine at West Virginia University, Lt Col in the US Air Force Reserves, and Chief Medical Consultant for the Air Force Marathon, Dr. Mark describes popular run training, eating and recovery methods as "mind-draining dogma and reckless bias", and is trying to spark a new “re-evolution” in running. During our discussion, you'll discover:

-The #1 blood marker to track if you want to make sure you're not one of those "healthy on the outside, dying on the inside" exercise enthusiast...

-How to effectively transition from built-up footwear to a minimalist running shoe approach...

-The most cutting-edge technology that currently exists to analyze your symmetries and gait patterns during and after running...

-Why Dr. Mark finishes every workout with what he calls an "alactic sprint"...

-Why you must earn the right to do intervals and sprints...

-Dr. Mark's personal method of tapering for a marathon, and why one of the top weapons in his running arsenal is a hot tub...

-Why Mark doesn't use Pose method, Chi method, or other popular running methods...

-And much more!

Resources from this episode: -Home blood glucose monitor -Optogait biomechanical analysis -TrueForm running treadmill -Natural spa enzymes as an alternative to chlorine Do you have questions, comments or feedback about Dr. Mark's barefoot, minimalist running approach? Your own thoughts to add? Pipe in at BenGreenfieldFitness.com and one of us will reply.

278 Pounds Of Fat Magically Disappears In Just One Year...On A High-Carb, Low-Fat, Sugar-Laden Diet?24 Oct 201501:04:14

Meet Denise Minger. Wait, no. That's not Denise.  This is Denise. The woman above Denise is a woman from a dietary study who lost 123 pounds in just shy of a year. She's not to be confused with the woman above her, who obliterated 278 pounds in a bit over a year. All on a 90-95% carbohydrate based, high-sugar, high-starch, low-fat diet.

And that's just a peek into the contents of today's podcast. But back to Denise. Denise blogs at RawFoodSOS.com, where she just released the controversial article "IN DEFENSE OF LOW FAT: A CALL FOR SOME EVOLUTION OF THOUGHT."

That particular article is exactly what we're going to be digging into this podcast... ...but Denise is no stranger to BenGreenfieldFitness.com. Last year, I published the article "How To Figure Out What Diet Is Right For You", which contains many anecdotes from Denise's book "Death By Food Pyramid". As a self-described health blogger, Denise typically spends about five hours a day reading and writing about nutrition. In both her writings and lectures she has a reputation for aggressively challenging today's leading voices of conventional wisdom, and is perhaps most famous for her thorough refutation of "The China Study" book. Denise is considered to be a major thorn in the side of both mainstream nutritionists and other health figures who adhere to standard dietary dogma.

During my discussion with Denise, you'll discover: -Why Denise doesn't drink coffee and eats lots of sushi and sashimi...

-How in the process of redeeming fat, we traded one form of oversimplified blame for another...

-What carbosis is, and why you need to be very careful mixing carbohydrates with fats...

-Why our current definition of low fat is very flawed, and the more appropriate definition of what low fat actually is...

-The low fat history you've probably never heard...

-The shocking evidence that sugar and white rice can actually cure diabetes and melt fat off the body...

-How decreasing "healthy" saturated fat and increasing intake of vegetable oils has been shown in baffling research to actually benefit conditions such as multiple sclerosis...

-Why it's a myth that a low-fat, high-carb vegetable diet is what eventually killed researcher Nathan Pritikin....

-Why Denise has changed her mind about some issues she had with the documentary "Forks Over Knives", and why she apologizes to vegans and vegetarians...

-And much more! Do you have questions, comments or feedback about high carb vs. high fat, and Denise's new take on a high carb, low fat diet? Your own thoughts to share? Leave it all BenGreenfieldFitness.com and either Denise or I will reply!

The Zen Of Chinese Adaptogenic Herbs: An Interview With The Inventor Of World's Most Potent Adaptogens.17 Oct 201500:58:47

My guest on today's podcast is Roger Drummer. Roger is kinda like Raiden from Mortal Kombat (pictured above) - you know, the guy that wears the conical, straw Chinese harvester and can generate magical orbs of electricity from his hands. Except, in this case, Roger plays with adaptogenic herbs. He's a Chinese herbal adaptogen formulator, a Certified Nutritionist and NCCAOM Diplomate of Chinese Herbology, holds a U.S. patent for developing a process to grow biologically active, anthocyanin-enriched medicinal mushrooms, and is in my opinion, one of the best-kept secrets in natural medicine and health enhancement. Roger even formulates personalized tonic herbs for thousands of clients, including many notable celebrities (which I ask him about in this podcast episode), and has trained in Shiatsu, Jin Shin Do, Reiki and Kriya Yoga, along with being a former triathlete, runner, cycling enthusiast, husband and father of three girls. I've personally known Roger for over five years, and it's been about three years since I've had him on a podcast (see "Chinese Medicine & Why Sugars Don’t Add Up Right on Food Labels."), so I figured that it was high time I had him back, especially since he just released a sugar-free version of my favorite adaptogenic herb complex: Tian Chi.

So what is an adaptogen? Adaptogens are a unique category of herbs that facilitate your body’s “adaptation” to stress. They help your body maintain, build or fix its own natural healthy processes, even if you’re exposed to a wide range of external and internal stressors. This means, that, for example, adaptogens can help increase cortisol if cortisol is low, or decrease cortisol if cortisol is high. They can also be used for anything from cognitive performance to enhanced endurance at altitude.

Roger is actually the inventor of the exact Chinese adaptogenic blend that holds a special place in my refrigerator: the one I mentioned above called Tian Chi . Here's the label: Tian Chi is a tiny packet that contains an herbal tonic blend of the most renowned adaptogens in the Orient.  Every herb used in TianChi is far more pure and potent than typical old, ineffective and often dangerous or nasty-ingredient laced herbs on the market. Very few products contain 100% whole herb extracts. On average the herbal extracts are at least 10:1 yields, meaning it takes 10 pounds of raw herb to produce 1 pound of pure extract. Most manufacturers start with pure yield and cut them to concentrations of 4:1 or 5:1 by adding filler. This produces a cheaper, but less effective extract. Imagine buying a 5:1 extract that originally was 45:1! In stark contrast, the herbal extracts used in TianChi yield 12:1 or greater, and there is even one herb in TianChi that is a 45:1 yield. In other words, you would have to take 9x as much herb from any other source to equal the potency in TianChi. And you would be getting mostly filler, harmful ingredients, and very few results. All of the herbs in TianChi are Non-GMO, Kosher Certified and non-irradiated. They are extracted in purified water and test free of heavy metals. And the creator uses only wild crafted herbs – herbs found in their natural state, free from pesticides and exposure to pollution. You will feel this stuff instantly, guaranteed. Below is a complete list of the pure and potent herbs you’ll find inside each pack of TianChi, with a guarantee of extreme freshness. -Schizandra – the “Five flavor berry” is known as a beauty enhancing herb, one of the main herbs pictured with Lady Maku the Goddess of Beauty. It helps restores proper water metabolism to the cells, detoxifies the liver and lungs, and is an important herb for building lung energy. It tonifies the reproductive system, builds sexual fluids and moistens the skin. Schizandra has been successfully used in China to treat hepatitis. It contains over 20 lignans that bind to carcinogenic substances and safely removes them from the body. A mild adaptogen and powerful anti-oxidant, schizandra is the Chinese equivalent to milk thistle. -Reishi Mushroom – Reishi is known as the “Mushroom of Immortality,” and “Herb of Good Fortune”. It is the most highly revered herb in China for its ability to brighten the mind and spirit. Historically used for boosting immunity, liver detoxing, blood purifying and building, and is known as a potent stress reliever. -   -Ashwagandha– Ashwagandha is known as Indian ginseng and one of the most famous of all Ayurvedic herbs. It is a premier adaptogen and has a profound effect on regulating the HPA Axis (hypothalamus/pituitary/adrenal axis) which is the basis of stress response. Although many herbs have been crowded into this category I still maintain that the “Gang of Four”, ashwagandha, rhodiola, reishi and eleuthero, are truly substances that can effectively regulate stress response.   -Rhodiola – Rhodiola is known as the “Rose of Heaven” and “Plateau Ginseng.” It is one of the premier adaptogens in the entire world and one of my personal favorites. Regarded as life-prolonging and wisdom enhancing, it can reduce stress response, is blood purifying and is said to balance both creative and cognitive functions of the brain. One of the best herbs for blood oxygenation, it is useful for all endurance sports. Used to treat depression and chronic fatigue and protects against radiation. It is a favorite herb for cosmonauts and mountain climbers. Rhodiola is a “Three Treasure” tonic, it builds Jing, Chi and Shen.   -Ecklonia Cava – Ecklonia Cava is a seaweed extract that is the most potent plant based antioxidant known. Because it is partially fat-soluble it crosses the blood brain barrier and is particularly useful in controlling inflammation in the brain. Ecklonia Cava lasts for 12 hours in the body, much more than any other antioxidant.   -Eleuthero – This is the herb that launched all of the studies on adaptogenic herbs. Commonly used as an adaptogen in regulating stress response and strengthening adrenal function. It’s famous as a physical endurance and mental enhancing herb used by cosmonauts for its blood oxygen enriching properties. Eleuthero is a great herb for anyone who’s involved in sports or work that demands strength and endurance. It’s more Chi building than Jing, even though I use it primarily for its effect on the kidney-adrenal energy. Eleuthero is seldom sold as a bulk herb as it’s not very nutrient dense. It takes over 40 lbs of good root to make one pound of powdered extract.   -Epimedium – Fepimediumamous as “goat sex tea”, epimedium is known throughout the world as herbal aphrodisiac. Lost in its reputation is that it’s also a great herb for increasing circulation in the brain and improving general immunity. Epimedium adds a spark of Yang or fire to the adrenals and has been shown to increase fertility. It is a Jing tonic.   -Cistanches – Its Chinese neucommia barkame is “Duzhong” having been named after a doctor who took it and achieved great intellectual success. Eucommia is a premier Jing tonic as it contains a perfect balance of Yin and Yang energy. Its main use is in bone strengthening formulas and can be used for increasing fertility and regulating blood pressure.   -Gotu Kola – Gotu Kola is one of the most important rejuvenating herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. It’s used to help revitalize the brain and nerve cells. Gotu Kola is historically used to increase intelligence, memory, longevity and decrease senility. It has been known to support normal immune function and adrenal energy. It is also a powerful blood purifier and is commonly used in Ayurveda to treat chronic skin diseases. Gotu Kola is commonly used by monks and yogis in the Himalayas as an aid to meditation; similar to how Reishi is used in China by the Taoist monks.   -Albizzia Flower – This flower is known as the herb for “forgetting cares and sorrows” and “collective happiness flower”. It is an ultimate Shen tonic and is often used improving memory, circulation, and has mood elevating properties.   -Astragalus – Astragalus is one of the greatest Chi tonics in all of Chinese Herbology. It’s often used as a ginseng replacement in younger people. Recently it has gain great popularity as an immune building herb. It’s used to help strengthen digestion and lung function, for recovery from illness and as an energy building herb. It is said to build Upright Chi, meaning when the lungs are strong and the breath is deep, it promotes good posture and holds the organs in place. Astragalus is an excellent herb for maintaining the Protective Chi circulating on the surface of the skin helping to ward off seasonal illness. If the cold wind seems to bother your neck it’s often a sign you’re Protective Chi is weak.   -Green Tea – One green tea of the most powerful plant-based antioxidants, green tea builds immunity, increases circulation and is a best known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown it to be valuable for memory enhancement. Most of green tea’s antioxidant polyphenols are from a class called catechins of which EGCG seems to dominate. It has been described as natures most potent anticancer agent.   -Polygonum (Ho Shou Wu) – translates as “Ho’s black hair” one of the main kidney restoratives in Chinese herbology. Legend has it that Ho, an aging lonely hermit living on the edge of town saw a vine intertwined on his walk through the forest. The vines resembled a couple embracing and so he harvested the root, cooked it and consumed the tea. His hair turned back to black from snow white (hence the name) and he actually married and had a son. They both lived to over 100 years old and the herb has since been called Ho’s black hair.   -Lycium (Goji) – LyciGojium is a restorative for the liver and kidneys, popular these days as Goji, and one of the 5 most famous herbs in China. Reputed to be the main food of Li Chen Yuang for the first 125 years of his life (he added some ginseng root for the next half of his life). Li died at a banquet in his honor after consuming a heavy dinner (he was a Taoist hermit who lived on herbs and vegetables) causing a national uproar and disgrace for the public official who hosted the event.   -Other herbs: Anemarrhena, Licorice, Polygala, Clubmoss, Cocoa Bean Extract, Stevia Leaf, Acerola Cherry, and Raspberry.   During my discussion with Roger, you'll discover: -The delicate process via which wildcrafted herbs are actually extracted in China, and exactly how they find their way to the USA... -The important difference between wild and cultivated herbs... -Roger's top herb recommendation for regulating cortisol levels and eliminating adrenal fatigue issues... -The truth about whether resveratrol really does have an anti-aging effect... -How D-Ribose rebuilds your energy stores and ATP levels, and exactly how much you need... -Why so many smart drugs and nootropic compounds use the substance "choline" in their formulations, the form of choline that contains the highest concentrations of actual choline... -Why Roger isn't a fan of using regular stevia mixed with adaptogenic herb extracts, and instead uses a specialized form of stevia root... -The main differences between Tian Chi and Inner Peace...   Resources from this episode: -Tian Chi Chinese Adaptogenic Herb Complex -Inner Peace Chinese Adaptogenic Herb Complex -My previous podcast with Roger "Chinese Medicine & Why Sugars Don’t Add Up Right on Food Labels." -Roger's Herbworks website Do you have questions, comments or feedback for me or Roger about Chinese adaptogenic herbs, Tian Chi, or anything else we discuss in this podcast. How To Use Low Level Light Therapy and Intranasal Light Therapy For Athletic Performance, Cognitive Enhancement & More.10 Oct 201500:42:56

Several weeks ago, in the article, The Ultimate Guide To Using Light To Biohack Your Circadian Rhythms, Sleep Better & Beat Jet Lag Forever, I told you about an in-ear light phototherapy device called "The Human Charger", which I've been experimenting with for everything from jet lag to a burst of pre-workout wakefulness.

Then, in the article, Pink Makes You Docile, Orange Makes You Buy Stuff, Red Makes You Mad: How To Use Color Light Therapy For Mood, Cognition, Healing & More, I taught you how to use something called chromotherapy to change your mood, deal with insomnia, or even treat a variety of health issues.

Finally, several days ago (probably because it appears I've lately been obsessed with light biohacks) one of my friends mentioned the word "photomedicine" to me. This word photomedicine was a new term in my vernacular, but when I looked into it, I found that intranasal light therapy, which is literally light stimulation of blood capillaries in the nasal cavity, has been used for the past couple decades as a very non-invasive method to introduce therapeutic light energy into the human body, and there's actually a surprising amount of research on this form of nonionizing radiation on biological systems, including effects on cognitive performance, fighting free radicals, combatting Alzheimer's symptoms and more. So for today's podcast, I hunted down an expert in photomedicine, also known as photobiomodulation (PBM), or low level light therapy. His name is Dr. Lew Lim, and Dr. Lim is the co-inventor of a wearable, intranasal light therapy device designed for home-use called the "Vielight". Dr. Lim is a Doctor of Naturopathy, has a Graduate Engineering Diploma, a MBA, and is a Chartered Accountant. He is also certified in Medical Neuroscience, Neurobiology and Human Physiology. He has obtained qualifications from University of California at Berkeley, Duke University, University of Chicago and University of Sheffield, UK and collaborates with Harvard Medical School and Boston University in research relating to the field of photobiomodulation. During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Why any athlete should pay close attention to the emerging field of photomedicine, particularly low level light therapy...

-Why the FDA has approved infrared therapy for everything from eliminating microbes and fungus in the human body to killing cancer cells...

-What happens to your cells (and specifically to your nitric oxide production) when your cells get exposed to low level light therapy...

-How to use intranasal light therapy as a way to "charge up your brain" prior to mentally demanding tasks...

-A biohack that combines red light therapy and infrared light therapy... -Exactly when, how and how long to use low level light therapy and intranasal light therapy for everything from brain stimulation to sleep...

-And much more!

Why Are So Many Fitness Industry Experts Fat, Sick & Unhealthy?03 Oct 201501:00:40

Gary Collins, pictured above, is a former FDA special agent. He was was born in Southern California, raised in the High Desert at the basin of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and has been involved in organized sports, nutrition and fitness for over 30 years. After a career in military intelligence, Gary worked for the U.S. State Department, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a Special Agent. His career took him around the world and gave him a unique perspective on not only how the United States, but the world is affected by our food, drug and healthcare policies. This took him from protecting some of the most powerful people in the world to investigations involving the biggest tainted pet food death case in the U.S. to the intricate dealings of one of the largest counterfeit prescription drug rings in the world. He has often said, “If American’s really knew what was going on in the area of healthcare and nutrition in this country, they would be appalled.”

So basically, Gary is a hybrid of a seasoned health expert and an investigator rolled into one. In addition to his published articles and Primal Power Method Series, (his total lifestyle reboot), Gary is also a contributor to the Brink of Freedom online magazine, Paleo Magazine and The Primal Show.

You can check out all Gray's products and his Primal Power Method on Amazon by clicking here.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-What it's like to be a special agent with access to the inner workings of the FDA...

-Why Gary says "If American’s really knew what was going on in the area of healthcare and nutrition in this country, they would be appalled"...

-Why the supplements you're buying may be counterfeit and may not even be made by the manufacturer you think it's made by...

-Why so many so-called "experts" in the fitness industry are fat, sick or unhealthy or not practicing what they preach...

-Why Gary doesn't track blood, biomarkers, saliva, etc...

-And much more...

Do you have questions, comments or feedback for Gary Collins, or your thoughts about why so many fitness industry experts are fat, sick or unhealthy? Leave your comments at BenGreenfieldFitness.com and either Gary or I will reply. You can check out all Gray's products and his Primal Power Method on Amazon by clicking here.

The Physician Who Personally Advises The World's Leading Health Authorities, And His Tiny Invention That Pro Athletes Swear By.26 Sep 201501:11:43

Mack Weldon and Harry's are sponsors

I have several friends who I would consider to be VIP's, bigwigs, and leading authorities in the field of health and biohacking.

Although I will respectfully keep those friends anonymous, I've noted that a relatively large majority of them have one specific man who serves as their personal physician, and he's the same guy who advises some of the world's top Spartans, strongmen competitors and obstacle racers, including April Dee, Hector Mendoza and Orla Walsh, Frank Franco and Joey Patrolia. That man is Dr. Anthony Beck, and he's my guest on today's podcast. Dr. Beck is an author, speaker, and leader in the medical world with over 20 years experience in the areas of Functional Medicine, Chinese Medicine, Clinical Nutrition, Orthomolecular Medicine, Hormone Replacement Therapy, Sports Medicine and Exercise Physiology. He maintains fur national medical board certifications, is the Medical Director for Task Force Dagger Foundation (which provides benevolent health care for U.S. military special forces operators and their families), is the founder and chief medical officer for Balance Protocol Institute, is the founder and CEO of Helion Nutraceuticals and is also the CEO of Hydration Solutions Inc. So not only is Dr. Beck a wealth of knowledge on advanced health tactics, medical testing, and the combination of biohacking and exercise performance, but he's also the mastermind behind a hydration tactic I've personally been experimenting with: a tiny invention called Oral I.V. In this interview, we delve into all of Dr. Beck's health secrets, and you'll discover:

-Why so many really smart people in the health industry and top pro athletes look to Dr. Beck as their personal physician...

-The exact food allergy panel that Dr. Beck recommends, and why he doesn't like the Cyrex panel...

-The eight different components that Dr. Beck tests as part of what he calls his "Balance" protocol...

-The exact science behind maximizing water delivery into cells...

-How water can carry an electrical charge, and how it creates something called an exclusion zone (also known as EZ water)...

-How much "less" water could you theoretically drink by using Oral IV...

-Why Dr. Beck believes that you do not need to take salt or electrolyte pills during exercise...

-The exact water restructuring and filtration system that Dr. Beck uses in his own home...

-And much more!

5 Hidden Causes Of Fatigue That Most Doctors Don't Know About And Won't Test For.23 Sep 201501:07:14

Mysterious, frustrating fatigue is one of the most common issues in the athletes, clients, soccer-moms and CEO's who I consult with. In fact, a recent study showed that nearly 40% of U.S. employees experienced significant fatigue in the previous two week period.

We all know about well-known causes of fatigue, such as a poor diet, food allergies, bad sleep, stress, etc. But what about when you're "doing everything right", but you're still tired, have brain fog, subpar workouts, or chronically low energy? What about those of us who eat right, get enough sleep, manage our stress, but still feel tired much of the time?

Today, my friend Dr. Isaac Jones joins the podcast to look into 5 lesser-known causes of fatigue that fly under the radar, but should definitely be ruled out if you’re doing everything right but still feel tired. So who exactly is Dr. Jones? Known as “the doctor of the future”, he is the world’s leading expert in high-performance concierge healthcare. As a successful entrepreneur and owner of 3 different companies, he is a trusted advisor and high-performance consultant to CEO’s and leading entrepreneurs around the world. He graduated from the most prestigious health and wellness doctorate program in America and has invested over $250,000 on advanced lab tests, health retreats, educational seminars and cutting-edge health certifications to help his clients gain an unfair competitive advantage. His company Designer Health Centers has received a certification from the United Nations for its “Excellence in Healthcare” for the work Dr. Jones did for the Royal Family in Saudi Arabia. He participates in a private “future of healthcare” mastermind with a small group of global thought leaders such as Sanjay Gupta MD and Jeff Arnold CEO of Sharecare.com who sold WebMD for $7.6 billion. During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Isaac's amazing story of how using functional medicine to heal his ADD, dyslexia and skin problems helped propel him to becoming one of the top 800m runners in North America...

-The underground method used in Russia and Europe to stop chronic infections in their tracks... -

Hidden sources of biotoxins in your environment, and how to test for and eliminate biotoxins...

-Why most Lyme tests don't really work, and what you should really be looking for when it comes to Lyme disease...

-The 3 different ways that mitochondrial dysfunction can occur, and exactly how to fix them...

-Five simple steps you can take to heal cells and mitochondria...

-And much more! Resources from this episode:

-Isaac's DesignerHealthCenter website -Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker's Surviving Mold website -Mold Warriors book by Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker -Phage therapy -ispotlyme test from Neurorelief -Urinary test for methylation -Cardiolipins for mitochondria -3 day stool testing for gut inflammation and health -Dr. Dan Pompa's 5 R's of Cellular Healing -book: Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics Is Fueling Our Modern Plagues

Could This New Ring Be The Final Frontier In Self Quantification, Biohacking, Sleep Tracking, HRV, Respiration & More?21 Sep 201500:48:18

BenGreenfieldFitness.com/oura This is a Premium podcast and is available - along with a protected vault of over 300 other audio episode, insider interviews, secret videos and downloadable .pdf's from the BenGreenfieldFitness show - when you click here to go Premium for just $9.99 for the entire year. Enjoy!

In an article I wrote 2 years ago about the "Top 10 Lessons Learned at Dave Asprey’s Bulletproof Biohacking Conference", I jokingly quipped that...

"...here at the biohacking conference, I’ve seen a little bit of everything, but ultimately, we still need one device to rule them all – a la Tolkien’s magical ring.

In other words, we need one simple wearable unit to be designed that 24-7 tracks heart rate variability, heart rate, pulse oximetry, global positioning, sleep, steps taken, calories burned, respiration, perspiration and skin temperature."

So I was understandably a bit excited when I discovered this Kickstarter page for the new ŌURA ring. This small, stylish ring uses state-of-the-art miniaturized electronics to track and measure a host of parameters, including sleep, heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), activity, body temperature, movement, respiration, and more. In today's podcast, I interview the Co-Founder and CEO of ŌURA ring: Petteri Lahtela. Petteri is a serial entrepreneur with 20+ years experience in creating market-leading high-tech products as well as building international businesses and market entries in dozens of countries. He has experience and expertise in Mobile telecoms, Healthcare IT Systems, Medical and Wellness Technology businesses as well as Healthcare and Wellness services. During our discussion, you'll discover:

-How the ŌURA ring identifies deep sleep, REM sleep, light sleep, and periods of wakefulness, and how accurate this data is compared to actual sleep lab measurements...

-Why the ŌURA ring is designed to allow you to completely disable the bluetooth function, and why the ring is specifically designed to not constantly transmit a signal (very important if you are concerned about electrical pollution)...

-The infrared measurement used to analyze HRV, and why it is just as accurate at measuring HRV as wearing a chest strap...

-How the Readiness Score you get from the ŌURA ring helps you identify days that are ideal for challenging yourself, and those that are better for taking it easy... -How something called your interbeat interval and pulse waveform can be used to accurately calculate your respiration rate...

-The important data that you can collect about your body using the built-in accelerometer inside the ring...

-How the ŌURA measures temperature, and what kind of health information you can discover by monitoring your body's temperature...

-Why the ring was designed to withstand extremes of environment and temperature, such as hot saunas, cold water, etc.

-How you can use the ring to track daily consumption (caffeine, alcohol, sugar), sleep aids you might be trying (valerian, melatonin, acupuncture) or other factors in your environment (barometric pressure, CO2, pollen count) using something called the Curious platform...

-And much more! Do you have questions, comments or feedback about the Oura ring, the Premium podcast, or anything else we discuss in this episode? Leave your thoughts at BenGreenfieldFitness.com!

Tai Lopez is an investor, partner, or advisor to over 20 multi-million dollar businesses. Through his book club and podcasts, Tai shares advice on how to achieve health, wealth, love, and happiness with 1.4 million people in 40 countries.

At age 16, Tai realized that life was too complex to figure out on his own. So Tai wrote a letter to the wisest person he knew, his grandfather - a scientist - and asked for the answers to life’s hard questions.

Tai was disappointed with his grandfather’s reply. There was no “secret formula.” The letter simply said, "Tai, the modern world is too complicated. You’ll never find all the answers from just one person. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a handful of people throughout your life who will point the way." But one week later his grandfather sent a package containing an old, dusty set of eleven books with a note, "Start by reading these." That began Tai’s habit of reading on his search for what he calls the "Good Life”: the balance of the four major pillars of life - health, wealth, love, and happiness. Over the years, Tai sought out the secrets to that “Good Life” by setting up his life as a series of experiments.

He began by first reading thousands of books from the most impactful figures in history Freud, Aristotle, Gandhi, Charlie Munger, Sam Walton, Descartes, Darwin, Confucius, and countless others. He spent two-and-a-half years living with the Amish, spent time working at a leper colony in India, and helped Joel Salatin pioneer grass-fed, sustainable agriculture on Polyface Farms. He then joined the long list of entrepreneur college dropouts and ended up completely broke (sleeping on his mom’s couch) until he talked five, multi-millionaire entrepreneurs into mentoring him.

Tai went on to become a Certified Financial Planner and worked in the world of finance before becoming a founder, investor, advisor, or mentor to more than 20 multi-million dollar businesses while settling in the Hollywood Hills.

He appeared on various TV and radio shows, spoke at top global universities like The London Business School and the University of Southern California, and created one of the top downloaded podcasts and YouTube channels, called “The Grand Theory of Everything.” In order to get feedback from an even larger audience, Tai started what is now one of the world’s largest book clubs that reaches 1.4 million people in 40 countries with his "Book-Of-The-Day" free email newsletter.

Tai recently summarized all he has learned from his mentors and compiled them into a series of ‘mentor shortcuts’ he calls, "The 67 Steps." He also created an alternative to the traditional business school. This "Millionaire Mentor program" program combines the best of self-learning with the best of a University degree without all the downsides of burdensome costs and inefficient methods.

In this podcast episode with Tai, you'll discover:

-Tai's take on morning routines, and the concept of "chunking your day"...   -Which time of day is best to be lazy and take a break...   -If Tai could invest in anything right now that would make people healthier or live longer, what he would invest in...   -What kind of education Tai would give his kids if he had kids...   -You drive a Lamborghini, live in the Hollywood Hills, have what appears to a comfortable life, etc. How do you give back? Do you ever feel "guilty" that you're not giving back enough?

Want more of Tai? You can listen to Part 1 of this series here, in which Tai and I talk about multi-tasking, reprogramming your genetics and checking your e-mail less. You can listen to Part 2 here, in which Tai and I talk about how to know when you’re actually making enough money, and when you can stop focusing on income, start focusing more on life, love and happiness, and how to strike the ideal balance between being overambitious and underambitious. You can listen to Part 3 here, in which Tai and I discuss personal finances – particularly in the wake Tony Robbins is leaving with his new book “Money”, and how Tai feels we should protect and grow our wealth, and exactly what Tai’s personal investment philosophy is.

What Doctors Won't Tell You About Your Thyroid, Little-Known Hacks To Improve Thyroid Function, The Best Thyroid Supplements & Much More With Dr. Amie Hornaman30 Sep 202301:04:27

Every once in a while, a personal story serves as a stark reminder that your body, while resilient, isn't infallible. Sometimes, it sends signs—like unexpected weight gain before a major event or constant fatigue—that something's off.

But what if those signals are misunderstood? Or worse, overlooked?

Meet Dr. Amie Hornaman, doctor of clinical nutrition and host of the top-rated podcast in medicine and alternative health The Thyroid Fixer™, with listeners around the globe. The title of "The Thyroid-Fixer" didn’t just fall into Dr. Amie's lap; she earned it. Not only through her groundbreaking work but because she knows the frustration of being misdiagnosed, not once or twice, but six excruciating times. It's not just about the wrong diagnosis; it's the emotional upheaval, the self-doubt, and grappling with a system that often doesn't look beyond the superficial. But adversity has a way of shaping trailblazers.

The founder of The Institute for Thyroid and Hormone Optimization, an organization with transformational, proven approaches to address thyroid dysfunction and support people in returning to full health, Dr. Amie is also the creator of The Fixxr™ supplement line, offering revolutionary, proprietary supplements that are changing the lives of many people.

So, why the focus on the thyroid?

Because this tiny, butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your neck wields immense influence in your body. The thyroid plays a pivotal role in determining how your cells use energy, affecting almost every organ in your body. Its proper functioning is essential for heart rate, body temperature, and even cognitive functions, underscoring its central role in overall health and well-being.

Plant-Based Medicine 101: How To Use Wild Plants For Cognitive Enhancement, Physical Performance, Immunity And More!29 Aug 201500:59:48

Wild plants growing right in your own backyard can be used to enhance digestion, increase cognitive performance and improve endurance.

You just have to know how to use them. And in today's podcast with Guido Masé, you're going to learn exactly how. Guido is author of the book "The Wild Medicine Solution: Healing With Aromatic, Bitter And Tonic Plants", a clinical herbalist, herbal educator, and garden steward specializing in holistic Western herbalism.

A described his plant-based medicine approach as "eclectic" and "drawing upon many influences". He spent his childhood in Italy, in the central Alps and in a Renaissance town called Ferrara. Then, after traveling the United States, he settled into Vermont where he has been living since 1996.

He is a founding co-director of the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism, an herbal medicine clinic and school. He serves as chief herbalist for the Urban Moonshine Natural Products Company, where he oversees research for an all-organic whole-plant tincture line and participates in product education and quality control.

Guido is also a trail runner and marathoner, and in this episode, you'll discover: -How Guido became a "wild plant" expert... -What is it that has changed in domesticated plants that make them so much more inferior than wild plants... -The important differences between aromatic, bitter and tonic plants... -How many plants you actually need to produce a tincture... -Why alcohol is such a great medium to mix wild plant extracts into... -How you can use "bitters" to enhance your digestive process (and how they're far different than digestive enzymes)... -Why you should include plants like endives, radicchio, frisee, dandelion and mustard greens on your salad or with your meals... -How to use wild plant extracts to support long bike rides, run or feats of endurance performance... -How to use pine, mint, lavender and lemon balm to enhance cognitive performance... -How you can easily make your own tonics and tinctures from common wild plants growing right in your own backyard... -And much more!
