Courtney and Emily have no strings to hold them down as they celebrate the 85th anniversary of Walt Disney Animation’s second motion picture, Pinocchio, by comparing the film to Carlo Collodi’s original novel, “The Adventures of Pinocchio: Story of a Puppet.” Collodi’s episodic adventure takes readers to the puppet show, the not so wondrous meadows, Playland, the bottom of sea…pretty much everywhere that is not school as Pinocchio learns to accept the consequences of his actions and tries to become a real boy.

Courtney and Emily are all in this together for this nostalgic discussion of Disney Channel and Ashley Spencer’s book, “Disney High: The Untold Story of the Rise and Fall of Disney Channel’s Tween Empire.” The Disney Channel was falling behind in children’s programming in the 1990s until they discovered the tween market and launch millennial defining television programs such as Lizzie McGuire, That’s So Raven, Hannah Montana, High School Musical, the Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Camp Rock, and Wizards of Waverly Place. But while tweens were eagerly consuming media, music, and merchandise, a lot was happening behind the scenes. High school is a formative time in an adolescent’s life and 2000-2012 were Disney Channel’s high school years as the network and its stars tried to find their identity.

Those zany Szalinskis are at it again! Ghouls and ghosts of every age wouldn’t you like to see something strange? Come with Courtney and Emily and you will meet Sally Skellington the Pumpkin Queen of Halloween. In the episode, your hosts discuss the Disney Press fiction release “Long Live the Pumpkin Queen” by Shea Ernshaw. The story begins right where the Nightmare Before Christmas left off, with Jack and Sally pursuing their relationship. As a newlywed, Sally is trying to find her place in Halloween town as she quickly rose in status from being a common ragdoll town resident to the Pumpkin Queen. While searching the woods, Sally comes across a door separate from the grove of doors leading to other holiday realms. When Sally accidentally opens the door to Dreamland and unleashes the Sandman, she will once again have to save Halloween town and all of the realms to reawaken from their dreamless sleep. Courtney and Emily discuss Sally’s character development in this sequel and debate if Nightmare before Christmas is a Halloween or Christmas movie.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair! Courtney and Emily return to their ongoing series, Fairytale Favorites, with a comparison of Grimm’s Fairytales “Rapunzel” and Disney Animated Studios’ 50th animated feature, “Tangled.” Like most fairytales, the original source material left Disney a lot of room for interpretation but did you know that the story actually moved from Italy, to France, then to Germany? Courntey and Emily wrap up the Legendary Summer Series with Dame Julie Andrews’ second memoir “Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years.” Andrews’ memoir takes place from 1962-1986 starting with her Hollywood debut in Disney’s “Mary Poppins” and ending with her second husband’s semi autobiographical film, “That’s Life!” Andrews reflects on the work and self discovery it took to balance a new career on the silver screen and a home life which included divorce, a second marriage, two step children, two adopted children, therapy, multiple family emergencies, and living around the world. In between hardships, Andrews also humbly shares all of the amazing opportunities and memories she has making movies and learning how to use and harness her talents. Courtney and Emily conclude the episode again talking about the criteria to become a Disney Legend and discuss how Julie Andrews managed to achieve it with just one film.

Courtney and Emily continue their Legendary Summer Series with “From Disneyland's Tom Sawyer to Disney Legend: The Adventures of Tom Nabbe” by Tom Nabbe. A Disney 55er, Tom Nabbe was a newspaper boy hired as a young teenager by Walt Disney himself to personify the youthful adventurer, Tom Sawyer, at Disneyland’s Tom Sawyer’s Island. However, his Disney career wasn’t limited to the shores of Rivers of America. In his 48 year career, he also spent time operating attractions, supervising food and beverage locations, and managing warehouses. He helped open Walt Disney World, Epcot, and Disneyland Paris but is most known for the Nabbe Grabber to help guests retrieve lost items in the parks. His recognition on Main Street and as a Disney Legend is well deserved reminding us that anyone can become a living legend.

Let’s get together yeah yeah yeah…for a Legendary Summer Series! This summer, Courtney and Emily are reading memoirs of Disney Legends. This episode kicks off the summer with “Forever Young” by Hayley Mills. Most known for her performances in Pollyanna(1960) and The Parent Trap (1961), Hayley made six films for Disney and grew up on the silver screen right before the eyes of her audience. Her memoir however, tells the story of the growing up she had to do off screen as she transitioned from a child actor to a young adult. Hayley Mills’ expert performance is extended to her writing. Her vulnerability and melancholic reflection pulls readers into her remarkable story. Courtney and Emily discuss her story through the films Mills made for the Disney Studios and why she is deserving of the Disney Legends Award.

It was all started by a …rabbit? The rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit were reacquired by Walt Disney Company in 2006, but prior to his homecoming, few people knew about Walt’s first cartoon character. Oswald was left to a few  paragraphs or the footnotes of Disney history books, until David Bossert came along. In celebration of Oswald’s 95th birthday, hosts Courtney and Emily are joined by the author of “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit: The Search for the Lost Disney Cartoons.” Bossert discloses how a casual online article turned into a multi-year search for the lost cartoons and a book that gave Oswald a chance to take center stage. Oswald was only created and produced by Walt Disney and his animation studio for one year. It was a tragic parting, but without the lesson’s Walt learned in the movie business with Oswald, Mickey Mouse and Snow White may have never graced the silver screen. Oswald truly is a lucky rabbit for the Walt Disney Company.

The tale has been adapted for the stage since its publication in 1843, with film and tv adaptations to follow. Disney has three Christmas Carols for audiences to enjoy. If a collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali seems surreal, that’s because it is, literally. Hosts Courtney and Emily welcome back Dr. Douglas Kern to the podcast to visit a 2015 Walt Disney Family Museum exhibit through its commemorative book titled, Disney and Dali: Architects of the Imagination, to discuss the friendship between the two artists and, at the time, their unrealized animated short, Destino. The project’s completion in 2003 and the opening of Walt Disney World Resort’s Gran Destino Tower in 2019 enlightened many fans, including your hosts, to Disney and Dali’s friendship and their mutual admiration for surrealism, animation, and cinema. To most, Disney and Dali would seem an unlikely pairing, but as the Oscar nominated animated short, Destino, and artifacts from the Walt Disney Family Museum and The Salvador Dalí Museum proved, the two artists were destined to work together.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort, Courtney and Emily are honoring Cast Member contributions to the park through Jeff Heimbuch’s book “Main Street Windows: A Complete Guide to Disney’s Whimsical Tributes.” Honoring a Cast Member with a window on Mainstreet dates back to opening day of Disneyland in 1955, a tradition started by Walt Disney himself. Walt Disney World followed suit and opened with cast member windows in 1971 as did every international park in the coming years. Cast Members made one man’s dream into a reality, so happy anniversary Walt Disney World and thank you to the dreamers and doers for 50 year of magical memories.

This film gave Anne Hathaway her royal debut to the silver screen starring alongside the practically perfect Julie Andrews as the Queen, who reveals to her granddaughter that she is no average teenager, but the heir to the Genovian throne. The Princess Diaries has everything we loved about a 2000s film - butterfly clips, scooters, and a rom com makeover montage. While we hold a special place in our hearts for this 2001 film, it actually has its roots in a multi-volume series! Join hosts Courntey and Emily along with their friend and guest, Leeann, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Meg Cabot’s The Princess Diaries as they discuss the many differences between the film and its original text as well as all the moments that make this story a Disney live-action classic. Inbetweeners are the animators who draw the pages in between the lead animators’ key frames. The in between doesn’t get a lot of attention, but it is essential to move the animation forward. The same concept applies to the “in between era” that connects Walt Disney’s passing to the Disney Renaissance. A tumultuous time period which often only gets a few chapters in history and is usually known only for mediocre box-office hits, now has its own book. Courtney and Emily welcome storyboard artist, screenwriter, director, and author, Stephen Anderson, to talk about that period that took us from the Walt Disney era to the Disney Renaissance in his book, “Disney In-Between: The Lost Years 1966-1986.” Anderson’s book gives you an in depth history of lessons animators, writers, directors, and studio executives learned while navigating how to run the Disney studio and Disney brand without Walt.

Hosts Courtney and Emily discuss Maureen Johnson’s, “Hello, Cruel Heart,” in honor of Disney’s latest live action film, “Cruella.” Before Cruella became the fur frenzied fashion icon that we know from the 1961 animated film, 101 Dalmatians, Cruella was Estella. “Hello, Cruel Heart” is a young adult novel that takes place before the events of “Cruella” focusing on Estella's (Cruella) teenage years as an aspiring fashion designer in 1967 London. You’ll be surprised how little Dalmatian there is in the book, but instead you get the fabulous fashion and music scene of the swinging ‘60s. Before you watch “Cruella”, enjoy “Hello, Cruel Heart.” You might identify with this Disney villain more than you realize.
