298: Why SEA Index matters for yacht owners08 oct. 202600:17:53

This is an episode of BOAT Radio, recorded live from the BOAT Lounge at the Monaco Yacht Show.

SEA Index® is an independent, data-driven benchmark that measures and compares the CO₂ intensity of a yacht's propulsion and auxiliary energy systems. Developed by the Yacht Club de Monaco and independently verified by Lloyd's Register, the methodology is aligned with the International Maritime Organisation's energy-efficiency principles and provides owners with a transparent, objective way to understand and improve the environmental performance of their vessels. SEA Index also includes an Air Quality Certification, developed with AtmoSud, which assesses nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), providing an independently verified evaluation of key atmospheric pollutants. Today, SEA Index is recognised by more than 26 ports and marinas worldwide and covers both superyachts and recreational vessels from 10 metres LOA and above, including production catamarans up to 35 metres LOA.

In this discussion, we'll speak with M. Bernard d'Alessandri, President of SEA Index - Superyacht Eco Association & Yacht Club de Monaco General Secretary about how the benchmark works, what it reveals about a yacht's energy and emissions performance, and why transparency, comparability and independent verification are becoming increasingly important for the future of yachting. We’ll also hear from the owner of 52m M/Y Oras about why SEA Index is important from an owner’s perspective, improving their yacht’s charter potential, helping them stay ahead of tightening maritime emissions laws and unlocking exclusive maritime perks such as priority berths and premium access to partner ports.

After cruising the Society Islands on board 48-metre Oceanfast yacht Big Sky, Holly shares a first-hand account of navigating French Polynesia by yacht – from the dramatic peaks of Moorea and encounters with humpback whales to the practical realities of reaching and chartering in one of the most remote destinations on earth. The pair discuss how it compares to expedition hotspots such as Antarctica and the Galápagos, and whether the South Pacific truly lives up to its “trip of a lifetime” reputation. The conversation then shifts to the state of the market, where the pair break down five of the biggest stories shaping 2026 so far.

259: Talking yacht, golf and Mexico with Danzante Bay owner and developer Owen Perry23 juin 202500:49:04
Two hours from LA, down the legendary Highway 1, there's a place where the mountains kiss the turquoise sea where property developer Owen Perry says “Palm Springs meets the Pacific.” A Rhode Island native turned real estate maven, Perry stumbled onto a piece of huge tract of uninhabited land on the Sea of Cortez during a cruise on his yacht around 16 years ago and saw something no one else did. And now? Villa del Palmar at the Island of Loreto by Danzante Bay is multi-purpose resort with the only TPC course in Mexico, a master-planned community and an all-inclusive resort with fine cuisine, a spa and service with a smile. Today on the Big Boat Interview, you will hear how this yacht owner turned a forgotten coastline near the "magical village" of Loreto into a global destination — and why it might just be the future of luxury travel in Mexico.

258: Beyond the Horizon: A Conversation with Heesen Yachts17 juin 202500:42:12
Heesen Yachts CEO Niels Vaasen and US sales director Thom Conboy share candid stories and behind-the-scenes insights — from the legendary founder Frans Heesen to the company’s exciting new Dutch shareholder.

Thom vividly recalls the electric moment 30 years ago when the 35-meter Tropic Sea (now Sea Axis) stole the spotlight at Bahia Mar — a defining memory for Frans, who felt “like King Kong.” That iconic yacht is still cruising today, part of Heesen’s ever-growing and evolving fleet.

From navigating the sales process (“sometimes you have to kiss a few frogs”) to celebrating with chocolate cake at launches, they dive into how the company has evolved — from sleek interiors to groundbreaking construction. They touch on Ultra G, one of the fastest large yachts in recent history, and why today’s clients increasingly favour steel builds over speed, valuing time as their ultimate luxury.
