Board All The Time Episode 2109 May 202501:00:44

Hey hey BATT Family! Thanks for coming on back for the next full episode of the show! If you've joined in after our recent interview with Jamey Stegmaier, thanks for coming back around! This week we got to have a dear friend of the show on to discuss the effects of colour vision issues in board gaming and the ways that games try and handle that - successfully and otherwise. We should note that it is a conversation with only one person with those colour vision issues, so his experience is replicable to his singular experience. But hopefully it helps provoke some thought and lets you hear some other opinions you may not have had the ability to yet! This episode we're also talking some games provided to us from Hobby World and Bellows Intent as well as finally getting Scott to play Ethnos and how that treated him. Like normal, hit us up with any thoughts or comments you may have!

---

This episode's segments:

00:00:00 - Intro

00:00:55 - What's Been on the Table

00:06:06 - Topic of the Week: Colour Vision Issues in Board Gaming

00:31:08 - Why Did I Play That: Ethnos

00:40:15 - Table / Shelf / Trade

00:54:22 - Rotating Segment: The Archives

00:58:45 - Contact Info / Sponsors

01:00:07 - Outro

---   Notes!

1) We should mention that this episode was recorded prior to the tariff stuff all dropping, which is why it wasn't mentioned in this episode. We're certainly not going to keep hammering on that topic as there isn't much we can directly do about it, but if you're wondering how we go from the interview we did to this episode, that would be why.

2) You can also hear just how long it's been since we recorded this since Scott was talking PopiCon at one point. Just general reshuffling of stuff between all the various issues of the past couple months.

3) Scott was right! There was a third bigger expansion to Tiny Towns. Fortune, Villagers, and Architects (which released in 2024!).

4) So it turns out that Scott's Archive game of Get Bit, we talked about in episode 19! Because I guess, let's just rip the curtain right away for this set of episode notes: The episode you heard as E19 was originally intended as E21 and this was to be E19. We figured since we had *just* had MacWagCon the previous weekend, we'd talk about it and release it while it was all fresh in our minds. So we recorded this PRIOR to MacWagCon where we summarily played Get Bit. But because it was better explained here, I decided to leave it in.

5) And we did play Bob Ross: the Art of Chill (actually after we finished recording!). Scott enjoyed it, but I'll let him provide his commentary on it at a later date.

6) Also, my dog coughed an enormous amount through this episode. I decided to not stick you with that very odd, repetitive noise but that last tag made me laugh regardless.

7) And for those of you that have asked, my younger son is thankfully fine. The hospital stay went fine and he's back home and bouncing around like normal at this point. Sorry for the delay on the episode, we appreciate the patience.

Board All the Time Interviews: Jamey Stegmaier on the Tariff Situation30 Apr 202500:27:38

Hey hey BATT Family! We had an incredible opportunity to sit down with Jamey Stegmaier from Stonemaier Games to discuss the current tariff situation, how it effects his business and the larger gaming industry as a whole, and some of the solutions he thinks could make the situation easier for everybody. We had a little bit over a half hour of his time and we stuck pretty closely to that. We have edited this conversation for clarity's sake, but other than that the conversation is presented as it was recorded. Scott and Mark were at the BATT studio in Indiana and Jamey joined in remotely from his office in St. Louis.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about what was discussed here, please feel free to reach out!

Notes!

1) Jamey did provide his article that he researched supply chain labour certification. It is located here, https://stonemaiergames.com/how-can-we-fix-this-together-tariffs-manufacturing-and-a-solution/, and you can find all of his sources within that link.

Board All The Time Episode 1704 Mar 202501:18:16

Hey hey BATT Family! We're back with our next main episode! We hope you really enjoyed the Live! episode from PopiCon, we had a blast recording that one. Last week didn't have an off-week release unintentionally between returning from vacation, an absolute nightmare of a week at work, and preparing for MacWagCon (the studio honestly has probably never looked better). This week though we get to talk about theme and what brings us to games, finally getting Scott to play one of my all time favourite games, and a return to one of our favourite rotating segments.

---

This episode's segments:

00:00:00 - Intro

00:00:58 - What's Been on the Table

00:05:38 - Topic of the Week: What's In a Theme?

00:29:31 - Why Did It Take So Long To Play That: Aquatica

00:40:58 - Table / Shelf / Trade

01:02:05 - Rotating Segment: Visions of the Future

01:16:19 - Contact Info / Sponsors

01:17:41 - Outro

---   Notes!

1) I know when talking about Skymines I could have said Moonbasa instead of Space Mombasa and frankly I'm as disappointed in myself as you are.

2) Not sure what or why that weird metronomic popping is there for a few a bit around the 30:20 mark, but it appeared to be buried within the audio itself and I couldn't clear it out. Apologies! I'm still trying to get better at audio engineering!

3) It is ironic that we discussed theme for so long in the episode and then Faraway's gets discarded out of hand so fast when talking about it. The game was taught to me without using that theme and unforunately nothing in the gameplay reinforces it so I just kind of breezed past it.

Board All The Time LIVE: Top Ten Games That Need a New Edition18 Feb 202501:44:26

Hey BATT Family! We recorded this episode LIVE!!! at PopiCon 2025 on January 31. We're presenting it to you here largely unedited to just give you that live experience (and also have you see all the stuff that normally gets edited out!). We had a blast with this one and we're looking forward to our next time we get to do this.

This or That: Wingspan vs Wyrmspan vs Finspan12 Feb 202500:45:14

Hey hey BATT Family! This week's episode is another episode of our This or That (or (in this case) the Other Thing) as we run down the three games of Stonemaier's Span series. We've been deliberating on two of the games for quite some time and now that we have Finspan in hand and have gotten to play it quite a bit, we felt it was finally time to break this down. We hope you enjoy this specific deep dive (pun unintended) into the three games!

---

This episode's segments:

00:00:00 - Intro

00:01:45 - Game Overviews

00:03:36 - Theme

00:08:41 - Production

00:18:39 - Gameplay

00:26:54 - Teachability

00:29:22 - Replayability

00:29:55 - Expansions

00:35:33 - Solo Modes

00:38:00 - Final Thoughts / Pick

00:44:39 - Outro

---   Notes!

1) Our conversation is making the assumption you know the basic system of Wingspan as we don't go into specific detail of how to play any of the three in particular. We discuss their various differences but not how the games fully function.

2) All copies of the games we discussed were purchased by Mark and are his personal copies. This is not a sponsored set of reviews/comparisons in any way.

3) When choosing which game Mark would pick of the three during the Final Thoughts section, almost a minute of deliberation was cut as he couldn't choose. That's how close two of the games are for him.

Board All The Time Episode 1605 Feb 202501:05:06

We're back! Episode 16 is a really fun conversation with Mark and Scott getting to talk about a surprising amount of ways to end games, geeking out entirely over a game that hasn't even hit crowdfunding yet, and starting in on series of games and the way they get out of hand sometimes. We hope you have a great time with this one - they were both focused in enough that there's really only one note of correction below. Who knew they could do such a thing?

This episode's segments:

00:56:28 - Rotating Segment: Visions of the Future

01:03:05 - Contact Info / Sponsors

01:04:28 - Outro

---   Notes!

1) In Mark's Vision of the Future, he said the game was from Nova Aetas Games and that's wrong (that's how ridiculously excited he was about it that he didn't even get that right). It is coming from Ludus Magnus Studios who developed the Nova Aetas world that Black Rose Wars and some of their other products are in.

Reviews: Eila and Something Shiny24 Jan 202500:23:06

Welcome to another review from the BATT team. Eila and Something Shiny is a  narrative adventure scenario/campaign game designed by Jeffery CCH and published by NorthStar Games (though it's original printing was from ICE Makes). It was acquired as a Christmas gift and so this is not sponsored by the publisher. It should be noted that the entirety of the Final Thoughts section is going to heavily spoil the game, so please keep that in mind if you want to listen to the first half of the review. We do timestamp and call out when that spoiler territory will be crossed and give ample time to stop listening.

Links!

As stated, here are safe links to go read RubyQuest and NanQuest at. Please keep in mind that these become very adult and dark relatively quickly and I wouldn't recommend reading them around children or at work or on work devices.

Ruby did come out first and I think is a better first read to get acquainted with the style but push comes to shove I actually think NanQuest is the superior of the two.

Board All The Time Episode 1517 Jan 202501:44:30

So there was a flood. Things were lost and that's never any fun. We ended up losing the original episode 15 and so what should have been Episode 16 has now taken it's place. We recorded as Jason's place to test through all of our equipment and just to make sure we had some extra content recorded since we went through our backlog during the holiday season. Every once in a while you may hear an odd echo or Stark (Jason's dog) running around but I did my best to clean all that out in the expedited editing process to get this episode out. I cut over 90 minutes out of this and it still ended up being our longest episode yet. This week we talk the flood, Scott is finally forced to play Tech Tree: the Game, and Mark is overly concerned that he talked an enormous amount. Thanks to Jason for the space and just being on the pod again. It's great to have his voice to start out the year with us.

This episode's segments:

00:00:00 - The Flood Notes

00:02:21 - Intro

00:03:51 - What's Been on the Table

00:15:39 - Topic of the Week: Games Replacing Other Games

00:33:27 - Why Did I Play That: Beyond the Sun

00:56:34 - Table / Shelf / Trade

01:34:40 - Rotating Segment: The Archives

01:42:40 - Contact Info / Sponsors

01:44:02 - Outro

---   Notes!

1) There are a lot more ums and uhs in the audio this time around. Blame that on the excessively abbreviated editing period and wanting to get this out even remotely on time. If/when I need to come back in and remove the preamble about the flood and episode numbering, I'll probably end up cleaning those up too. (And frankly while those filler words don't make for the cleanest audio ever, it's the inhales that drive me up a wall much, much more.)

2) When talking about Weirdwood Manor I realized just how much Scott and I talk with our hands and that is just a terrible thing to translate to an audio medium.

3) We know its Sagitarius A*, we just didn't say the * part.

4) Scott would have been talking about the new 2023 version of Castles of Burgundy from Awaken Realms, not the 2019 reprint from Alea.

5) If anybody has a spare box for Kingsburg (2nd ed preferably, but I don't really care at this point), please reach out! That was one of the games that was lost.

Board All The Time - Top Ten for 202501 Jan 202501:23:54

Happy 2025 everybody! Sorry for lying to you with yesterday's Odds & Ends episode saying that we were done until Episode 15 released. Whoops. Guess we just had more content in the can for you. We really are going to be done until Episode 15 releases on January 14th though.

---

Scott and Mark discuss their revised Top Ten of All Time lists in this episode. When we did the recording of our original lists in June, Scott simply hadn't done anything like that before. Mark's list was based off of doing them for five years at that point and it was an interesting conversation. This time around they both took a lot more time to craft the lists and there are a lot of interesting surprises here. There is a section of discussion about what the qualifications for making the list and how each list was compiled before actually getting into the top tens themselves. Per normal, all parts of the discussion are appropriately chaptered out if you want to jump to any portion, but hopefully you'll find what that first discussion as interesting as we did. If you would like to skip ahead into the list, that timestamp is 19:19.

1) If you would like to check out Mark's Top 100 list, it can be found at: https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/347553/top-100-games-2024-edition

2) Mark loves that Scott goes full Midwest around the 20:19 mark in his number ten.

3) Scott makes mention of something that will end up in the next Odds & Ends episode during Mark's nine that references his number eleven. Eleven gets talked about further on in the episode, but Mark did say what his thirteen was and that's part of that conversation. That whole discussion got lifted from this episode for length.

4) Mark totally missed an opportunity to say that we already have Ticket to Ride Legacy: Europe and it's called Brass. What a doof.

5) Scott basically screamed at 1:03:00 and Mark had to soften it down because he almost went deaf when it hit at original volume.

6) There was mention of a photoshoot near the end of the episode. Some of those photos have ended up on our website (or will be soon), some are used in our socials, and some of them are on our media kits. [If you'd like to work with us and would like our media kit, please let us know!)

Off Week Odds and Ends 3 - The End of the Year Edition31 Dec 202400:39:16

It's the end of the year BATT Family! That means that we're going to be going dark until Episode 15 releases on January 14th to just give us a little bit of breathing room to catch up after the holidays. We always have all this extra content lying around for these Odds & Ends episodes and we hope that you enjoy this one. I also really hope that you enjoy the blooper reel, I certainly had a super fun time putting it together from all the stuff that got left behind.

CONTENT WARNING: This episode is marked explicit because of the swearing in the blooper reel. If nothing else, you can see how tough it can be for us to maintain perfect professionalism while recording.

CONTENT WARNING: The blooper reel ALSO has a lot of weird bodily noises - basically burps and weird mouth noises, but if you've got any kind of audio aversions maybe skip that part?

00:30:19 - Scott's Thanks

00:32:05 - Blooper Reel

---

Notes!

1) Scott's Thanks segment was recorded remotely via his cell, so that's why the audio quality is rougher than normal. We're still working on improving our remote record situation.

2) Speaking of Scott's Thanks segment, how many of his ridiculous little puns did you catch? We know the number. First person to hit us up on BlueSky with the correct number will get ... something ... from us.What is it? WHO KNOWS.

3) Also lots and lots of Scott Mouth Noises (TM) in the blooper reel. Feel my pain of what I must cut so much of.

The Games That Made Us - HeroQuest24 Dec 202400:08:21

Merry Christmas Eve for those of you that celebrate and a happy Tuesday to everybody regardless. Scott is back doing some off week content with another installation of The Games That Made Us. HeroQuest was one of the most expensive games that Scott ever owned, constantly begging family members to purchase expansions for the game. And taking time out to create their own expansions for the game., it taught Scott how to be creative within a different medium. Scott still owns their second edition copy of HeroQuest which came out several years after the first and did not receive nearly the love and attention that the original did.

This episode is dedicated to Dave Klingerman who sadly passed earlier this year due to complications from cancer. Dave stepped in to be a male role model for Scott after he tragically lost his father.

Board All The Time Episode 1418 Dec 202401:13:40

Welcome back BATT Family! This week we have a wide ranging conversation about games that we both unintentionally brought to the conversation that had us making a surprising amount of weird noises to. We talk publishers that we love, publishers that don't work us, and games from a publisher we love that didn't work for us. Thanks so much for waiting those extra few hours for this one, it wasn't the most pleasant thing to have to re-edit half of it, but the episode ultimately came out stronger for it.

---   Notes!

1) When Mark said Atlas: Sovereign Rising he meant Atlas Lost: Rise of the New Soverigns. He's still actively looking for it too if you've got a copy you're willing to part with.

2) In the intervening time since we recorded this, Moonrollers did shift down to a trade for Mark and has left his collection.

3) Scott during the game he brought for his Table makes a comment that goes "We sat there and went" and then Mark responds with that's a bummer. As it turns out that was an entirely visual response that had no other commentary made about it in either of the recorded files. I guess we forgot we were an audio medium for a second. Sorry!

4) Mark went back and forth based on whether to leave the small post-modern commentary bit in near the end of the TST segment. It isn't intended to be a moment to cause contention in any way, but it was ultimately felt to be a way to discuss how we are allowed to respond and react to popular culture in a way we feel is most within our own control. There are very, very good reasons to disagree with that particular author and we can safely say that neither of us support their views and that it was more important to make it clear that we have our own opinions and feelings regarding them instead of censoring ourselves in a way that would have felt disingenuous.

Board All The Time Episode 2022 Apr 202501:14:34

Hey hey BATT Family! Welcome back to another main episode of the pod. This week, since we're on a five, we've got a guest with us as we do our Top Ten Games that We Enjoy Teaching! It's a bit of an askew topic to go with, but it was selected by our guest (Erik!) and it was a fun list to go through. This did end up taking two passes to fully record as the first version of it was lost in the flood (boo!). At this point though, that should be the last time you see/hear that as an excuse because we're well beyond everything that was effected by it now. So we hope you enjoy the list and be sure to hit us up and tell us what your favourite games to teach are!

Notes!

1) Sorry for the all of a sudden laughing at the intro of Erik's number 10. There was a great bit that just derailed the conversation we were all laughing at right before. You'll likely hear that in the next Odds and Ends episode.

2) Ironically, I had a conversation with my brother this past weekend where he told me he's never played Yahtzee. Whoops.

3) I have to now admit that Amun-Re is my favourite Reiner Knizia game. Whoops again! That said, I do enjoy the teach of High Society more, so I stand by it's inclusion in the list. And we did end up playing it after recording!

4) If it sounds like you may have missed part of the conversation during the Hogwarts Battle segment - that's because you did. The guys got distracted by comparing it to other games in it's series and it became a fairly convoluted conversation where even I had to ask which game we were talking about. So hopefully the segment comes across more naturally than I'm thinking it did because it's really late as I'm editing and I was very confused the second time around too.

5) I left the thing about gaming meta jokes in because we're in the process of recording our Board Gaming 101 episode to help you understand all of our terminology! If you have anything you're questioning or don't know the answer to, hit us up on any of our contact methods and let us know which ones we should define! (Also my exasperation is largely because we're all in this space, it seems wild they'd never heard of a point salad before.)

6) If it feels like there's not a ton of conversation about Werewolf in Erik's number 2, that's because MOST of what was there got cut for future Odds and Ends episodes. We tangented hard by just telling crazy stories.

7) This was recorded about 6 weeks before MacWagCon so it's entertaining to me that Captain Sonar showed up for two episodes in (what became) a row. Also, I meant to say First Mate instead of Navigator.  ---

The Games That Made Us - The Omega Virus10 Dec 202400:08:18

Welcome back to the off-week BATT content! This week's episode is a return to our series of The Games That Made Us. This episode is about The Omega Virus and how it impacted Mark as a child, what influences it had on his love of themes and gaming, and just generally celebrating how far ahead of the rest of the industry it was at the time of it's release. Mark's copy of The Omega Virus is almost a sacred item in his hagiography because of how much it really did influence him as a person and how the effects of playing that game solo for so many years really did shape him to be the person he is now. If you've played it before, then have fun walking down memory lane. If you've not, then get hyped about it and the eventual new release that Restoration Games is working on. Thanks for listening to this episode and we'll catch you next week for Episode 13.

Board All The Time Episode 1303 Dec 202401:14:09

Man alive, this one we got weird with. Partially it's because we recorded so late, but we have a wide ranging and in depth set of conversations on neglected games, returning to older designs, and some real surprises had within. There are a number of moments that we caught each other by surprise and if you like hearing us disagree, then definitely tune into the Table/Shelf/Trade this time around.

---   Notes!

1) When we use the word "clean" in reference to board games, we're talking about how the rulesets for whatever game don't have unneeded rules or mechanisms or other faff. It's very easy to grasp what they're doing, get right into the play, and not feel like you've missed something because a rule was forgotten or obtuse or similar.

2) Mark made an error! When talking about Azul, he said Starry Night Sky and he MEANT to say Penny Black. Whomp whomp.

3) Apologies for leaving in all of Scott's flabbergasted noises and such during the beginning of HVAC, but you should have seen the way he was physically reacting at the time too. It felt right to leave it all in.

4) Since we got distracted with talking about the surrounding parts of Dungeon Roll, we failed to actually explain the game. It's a fairly straightfoward fantasy themed push your luck game. On your turn you'll roll a handful of D6 to represent your adventuring party and the enemies they're facing. You'll roll more enemies the further you progress into the dungeon and consequently earn more experience and loot as you go. You try and keep going as long as you possible can before either your party dice are exhausted and you lose everything or you choose to retire for the run and head back to the surface. You have three total runs per game, but you can choose to play as many runs as you really wish.

5 Games to Bring Home for the Holiday26 Nov 202400:10:43

Happy Thanksgiving Week BATT Family! We hope that you'll be able to find a bit of relaxation this weekend (at least until Rivalry Week kicks off on Saturday). In the spirit of trying to bring people to the table and give you an alternate to playing Rummikub for the nine billionth time, we're giving you a variety of recommendations for games to bring home for the holidays that will get anybody to play!

One final note, we didn't present this list as any kind of ranked list, instead we talked about them in order of release date.

---

This episode's segments:

00:00:00 - Intro

00:01:43 - Game 1

00:03:07 - Game 2

00:04:36 - Game 3

00:06:33 - Game 4

00:08:29 - Game 5

00:10:06 - Outro

---

Five more games to take home for the holidays:

1) Sushi Go! - Gamewright

Originally released in 2013 from designer Phil Walker-Harding and plays 2-5. A light drafting game with great art and a clean set of scoring varieties within the cards themselves. Essentially it's a set collection game where you're trying to score as many points as possible across three rounds based on the cards you've drafted. There was a larger version with more modularity, Sushi Go! Party that supports 2-8 players if you want to play with more people. The components for regular Sushi Go! are included should you want to play that way as well. There were some other implementations as well (Sushi Roll, Sushi Go!: Spin Some for Dim Sum) but I think that SG/SGP are the best ones out there. There is also a brand new 10th Anniversary edition available in very limited quantities, but I have seen it at Barnes and Noble so you might still be able to track that one down.

2) Antidote - Bellwether Games

Also released in 2013 from designer Dennis Hoyle, it supports 3-7 players. Antidote plays in the same way that Clue does - you're trying to find the solution before everybody is down to one card in hand. Antidote is a deduction game where on your turn you'll either have everybody pass one card to the left or right, make a direct trade with another player, or have everybody play a card from their hand to the table. There are other modules and variants with the box and the Lab Alliance expansion that honestly we never play with because the base game is strong enough on it's own. Lab Alliance is worth pick up just to expand the player count up to 9 but that's the only reason to own it I think. This game is also one that you can play as co-operatively or selfishly as you want. There technically is scoring but we never use the points and just play to see if we can survive. This has been a favourite for a very long time.

3) Deception: Murder in Hong Kong - Grey Fox Games

Released in 2014 from designer Tobey Ho, Deception plays 4-12 players and is a team based deduction game. A murder has been committed by one of the players around the table and only the murderer and the Forensic Expert know who did it. The Forensic player has to communicate what they know silently and only using 6 prompts that are randomly drawn. Each player will have an array of cards in front of them and the murderer needs to lead the other players astray as the Forensic player tries and gets the others to identify the correct items/player. Each non-Forensic player has exactly one guess before the end of the game to guess a pair of cards to identify the murderer. If you like social deduction and want to lean into that theme, then Deception is an excellent choice. There are a variety of small promo packs that you honestly don't need (a lot more gaming related nonsense). The Undercover Allies expansion is good but honestly unneeded.

4) Just One - Repos Productions

Just one was released in 2018 and was a reimplementation of a 2017 game that  Ludovic Roudy designed. Just one added Bruno Sautter to that design team and supports 3-7 players though honestly you can play more than 7 without much issue. Just One is a game that feels like such an obvious game that somehow took til the last ten years to be released. One player (the judge essentially) will blindly pick a numbered word off a card they can't see. The rest of the players will then try and come up with a single word that will allow the Judge to guess the word they picked. The trick is that if any player reveals they wrote the same clue then both (or all in some cases) have to erase their clue and the Judge has to guess with what's left over. There's a scoring system in this one too that we frankly never use beyond trying to get more words correct than not. This one also works incredibly well for remote play. The biggest baffling thing with Just One is that there isn't any kind of expansion deck available for it in English. A couple of very small promo packs exist, but that's about it. Still, it's arguably my all time favourite party game.

5) The Crew: Mission Deep Sea - Kosmos

Released in 2022 from Thomas Sing, Mission Deep Sea is the reimplementation of the 2020 game Search for Planet IX. The Crew plays 2-5 players and I really do pick the specific version of Mission Deep Sea. It's more interesting the way the tricks are determined, uses far less fiddly mechanisms by dropping the tokens, and has just as little theme as the original. The Crew is a co-operative trick taking game and that alone will stun most trick taking players in families. Because the mission book is as simple to use as it is, it's easy to define the path of how to play each night. Or you can simply peel off a few random mission cards and just play it that way. Easy to understand, easy to teach, and a great way to introduce new people to trick taking just as much as it's easy to get lost in for experience trick takers.

Board All The Time Episode 1219 Nov 202400:59:25

This week's episode feels like we were just focused on talking about production quality and storage (considering that Freedom Five delivered yesterday, that can only be kismet for how rough that game's storage is). But we had a lot of fun talking about games that we've come to love, how a great game can transcend a bad teach, and how not every game in a genre is going to work for you.

---   Notes!

1) From 31:32 - 32:56, the furnace in the studio kicked in and we didn't realize that it was going to be that noisy in the background. The joy of home studios I suppose, but I've done my best to reduce it. The game I'm discussing at the time I did end up calling a Table if you don't want to listen to that segment.

2) I realize that we talked about Millenium Blades in Episode 10 as well, but that episode was recorded something like 3 months before Episode 10 was (see that episode's notes as for why). If you want to skip that, the time stamp for it is 50:27 - 52:42.

Board All The Time Episode 1113 Nov 202401:01:30

Ahh, it's nice to be back to a regular episode again. We have an esoteric topic of the week, talk about all the games that we played recently, take a nostalgic dive back into some games that you may not have thought of in some time, and just gush over an area control game that Scott actually really likes.

This episode's segments:

00:02:51 - What's Been on the Table

00:08:01 - Topic of the Week: What Is Your Obligation as the Host?

00:21:43 - Why Did I Play That: Wonderland's War

00:33:58 - Table / Shelf / Trade

00:48:13 - Rotating: The Archives

01:00:01 - Contact Info / Sponsors

01:01:07 - Outro

---   Notes!

1) Due to guest availability, we actually recorded this one before we did Episode 9 with James Hudson. We didn't know that we'd have this much Druid City so close together, but seriously Wonderland's War is exceptionally good.

2) Masque of the Red Death's track through Mark's Top 100 is pretty wild:  2019: #010 | 2020: #011 | 2021: #034 | 2022: #087 | 2023: #087 It will most likely stay in the high 80s range until it (if ever) falls out at this point.

3) The third Doctor Lucky game was The Island of Doctor Lucky in 2018.

4) It's been mentioned a bunch of times, but the most recent Top 100 Mark did can be found at:  https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/328088/top-100-games-2023-edition?itemid=10344720

You can expect the new one to be up at the start of January 2025 after we release our Top Ten for 2025.

5) Do you like all the weird little things after the outro sting now? Because we find them hysterical.

Board All The Time Episode 1023 Oct 202401:24:45

Welcome BATT Family to Episode 10 - The Top Ten Thematic Games! This is an odd episode for us at this point, because this was actually recorded fairly early into the production run but we needed to get Jake in to be able to record. So this one actually happened before we upgraded our equipment and had enough mics to support a guest appropriately. There will be some odd table thumps that don't occur anymore and the like, but ultimately none of us would change the picks we made. It was a great conversation and we really hope that you liked having Jake on as well. Let us know what your favourite thematic games are in our Discord or by emailing us at boardallthetimegaming@gmail.com!

Some notes!

1) The games that turned into KH: Perilous Pursuit were Rollers, into Rollers Deluxe, into Fantastic Beasts: Perilous Pursuit. We do all still agree that it took four swings at it to make the game into what it should have been all along and it works best in KH.

2) This was recorded prior to GenCon. That means that we hadn't had the pleasure to meet and discuss Apiary with Connie at this point and didn't realize just HOW MUCH bee knowledge and genetic variance went into basically every aspect of that game. We'd definitely have commented on that if this took place after.

3) In relation to a point Scott very confidently states, he forgot that Apiary does in fact have a(n excellent) solo mode.

4) It's ironic that we said we forgot to release a spooky season set of content and then realizing how much horror is in this one. C'est la vie! That's what happens when you don't re-listen to a 3 month old recording before recording and releasing something that felt timelier.

Reviews: Inferno16 Apr 202500:26:44

Hey hey BATT Family! Today we are going to be reviewing Inferno which was provided to us by Grand Gamers Guild. This is heavy, economic Euro game for 1-4 players and takes approximately 1 hour per player to play.

As a pre-emptive note: we do start the discussion by mentioning the extremely heavy theme and how you're not representing good people (at all). If you would like to skip straight to the game play itself and the rest of the content, go to 2:14. Otherwise, just know that that's there.

We hope you enjoy the review and Inferno itself! Feel free to hit us up on any of our regular contact methods to let us know what your opinions are on Inferno!

This episode's segments:

00:00:00 - Intro

00:01:35 - How the Game Plays

00:08:31 - Learning Curve / Ease of Teach

00:11:21 - Artwork / Components / Iconography

00:17:54 - Scott's What to Tell Others / Replayability

00:22:02 - Solo Mode / Mark's What to Tell Others / Recommendations

00:25:19 - Final Thoughts / Outro

---   Notes!

1) The only note to put in this review is that just through the course of editing it, it made me want to pull it out and play it again. That's how good this game is.

Spooky Season (2024 Edition)13 Oct 202400:33:34

It's the best time of the year: Spooky Season! And darn it if Mark and Scott didn't forget to record a segment on this for release in an October episode. The joy of not considering release dates during pre-production. That'll be changing in the future, but until then have a whole singular helping of the topic. Enjoy!

00:00:00 - Intro

00:01:36 - Honorable Mentions

00:06:37 - Scott Game 1

00:08:49 - Mark Game 1

00:11:32 - Scott Game 2

00:15:20 - Mark Game 2

00:20:53 - Scott Game 3

00:26:43 - Mark Game 3

00:30:23 - Scott's Bonus Question!

00:32:40 - Plugs / Outro

**Mark would have totally put Nightfall on the list had he remembered it. What an oversight! It would have taken the place of The Few and Cursed most likely. You'll hear about that soon enough probably.

**There was an additional conversation about a game called Coma Ward that was ultimately cut from the episode. It was an attempt at another publisher to come up with a modern version of Betrayal at House on the Hill and it ultimately failed. Mark didn't want to just dunk on it in this episode, so that content may come out in a future Odds and Ends episode.

**You might be wondering why Neither Mark nor Scott mentioned Horrified (a specific entry or the series) and it's because ultimately neither one likes it enough. Mark feels the first game is by far the best, but gets tired of the pick up and deliver whereas the rest of the series is deeply unbalanced and missing a lot of rules. Scott thinks that while the original Horrified felt very groundbreaking at the time that it was released, the other versions don't bring anything new to the table and there are a lot of games out there that are scarier and (for him) more fun.

**We did discuss the Night Cage and considered putting it on the list, but the issue is that neither of us feel like it's a very good game. It's an incredible and substantially creepy theme with a really solid production, but in Scott's words: "I love its idea, its just not that great of a game. It ends up being Top Deck: The Game." Mark can't really disagree with that feeling and wants another try from the publisher at it.

**Both Scott and Jason really enjoy the game Atmosfear. It is possible to find it online for anywhere between $50-$80 normally and all the video content is available on YouTube so you don't have to rely on a VCR. Go wild! Be spooky!

**And as a final side note, Scott thought about pulling a practical joke on Mark and do the Top Five Snoopy Games but he was very tired and forgot the joke until after post recording.

Board All The Time Episode 9 (With James Hudson)09 Oct 202401:07:32

This week's episode is one that Mark and Scott had an absolute blast recording and are still pumped that it happened. We have the inimitable James Hudson from Druid City Games on with this today and we got to talk a wide array of things with him. In addition to discussing gaming from an industry perspective, he also gave us a number of heads up on things from Wonderland's War, Tidal Blades, and even the future of Bloodstone! Check it out and let us know your thoughts! Meanwhile, check out next week's off-week episode featuring all the extra conversation including the future of Sorcerer City!

This episode's segments:

00:00:00 - Intro / Hi James!

00:02:27 - What's Been on the Table

00:07:45 - Topic of the Week: Why Do "Bigger" Publishers Use Crowdfunding?

00:27:14 - Should Games Get Second Chances?

00:36:41 - Table / Shelf / Trade

00:56:12 - Rotating Segment: Surprise Party!

01:02:28 - What's Next for Druid City?

01:06:06 - Plugs / Outro

Thank you again to James for joining us today! Here are the links to what we talked about with him:

Druid City's Discord: https://discord.gg/CQutpamzff

**As a quick note: we've gotten the question of what score ranges would each segment of Table/Shelf/Trade normally relate to? At least for Mark, a Shelf is 8+, Table is 5-7, though a 5 isn't that exciting of a table, and a Trade is 4-.

**When Scott said Telescope in his review of The Search for Planet X, he meant Observatory.

**When talking about Stamp Swap, Mark didn't have any foreknowledge of the game's existence. He was simply expecting an I Cut, You Choose game from the company for a very long time.

Board All The Time Episode 718 Sep 202400:57:18

The cursed episode finally releases! We had to take three swings at recording this one between tornadoes, corrupted audio, and just finding the time to get it all put together. This is one of our favourite episodes we've done so far though. Not only do we have a wide ranging and thoughtful discussion on expansions, but we managed to talk about more games than any other episode so far. Thank you all so much for the patience as this episode had to keep getting reconstructed, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

The Games That Made Us - Dungeons and Dragons (Scott Version)03 Sep 202400:06:33
Scott's back with their next installment of "The Games That Made Us". They are already breaking the rules as they talk about the classic tabletop role playing game Dungeons & Dragons.   This is dedicated to Staff Sgt. Marvin Lee Trost, who passed away on December 5th, 2004 when an I.E.D. detonated near his Humvee. "Thank you Marvin, for always seeing me, even as I was learning about who I was"     Trigger Warning: Scott was very emotional while talking about the loss of his friend. While no concrete details are discussed, war is an ugly subject and the loss of a life is still a loss of a life.

While we're adjusting to the editing process of multi-track recording, here's a random assortment of extra stuff that we've recorded and not released yet. We hope you enjoy the bloopers as much as we did, because parts of it we still totally lose it over. There is one blooper where Mark swears - other than that the episode is clean but we figured we'd hedge our bets and call it explicit just in case.

Board All The Time Episode 627 Aug 202400:52:39

This was some of the most fun we've had in an episode so far. We cover a wide range of games that we love (and one that Scott mostly can't stand) and focus on the idea of what's the best player count for any particular game. We got slightly rambly but in the process manage to sort of sneak in a bonus set of Table Shelf Trade reviews at the top! We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

5 Games to Transition a Game Night20 Aug 202400:19:07

On our off weeks, we still try and get you all the content your heart desires. So this time around, Mark talks about the 5 Games To Transition a Game Night with. Games that are used to start or end an evening or, more likely, to throw on the table while someone has to go be a responsible adult for a few minutes. He's talking all filler games and at some point Scott may provide his list as well.

Board All The Time Episode 514 Aug 202401:06:00

It's an episode on the fives, meaning it's time for a Top Ten episode! That means we eject most of the regular segments and just have a fun time talking about a specific topic with a guest the whole time. This week's episode is the Top Ten Games to Start a Collection With! We had Jason on with us, ironically this was before any of the GenCon episodes, so you get to hear a bit about him as well. This was also the last episode we had recorded before we released and got feedback from people, so if there are any recording oddities that would be why! Come back on Episode 6 for our regular content and until then, we hope you enjoy this episode!

The Games That Made Us - Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia06 Aug 202400:09:11

While we recover from GenCon and adjust to our new bi-weekly schedule, here is another episode of The Games That Made Us, from Mark this time, about Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia. We'll see you here next week for episode 5 - the Top Ten Games to Start a Collection With!

The Games That Made Us - Go to the Head of the Class30 Jul 202400:07:49

Hey hey BATT Family! With the advent of GenCon upon us, and getting out those extra preview episodes last week, this week's episode drop is the first from Scott of The Games That Made Us. In addition, there is a small notice at the start of the episode regarding our release schedule. In case you skip past that to go straight into the content - life got extremely busy and the editing process has simply taken an enormous amount of my spare and family time to get out the episodes each week. The pod will be continuing in full but we will be shifting to a bi-weekly release instead of weekly for the forseeable future. We really appreciate your patience with us as we figure out this whole process and love that you continue to take part in this wild journey.

Gen Con 2024 Preview: The Games25 Jul 202400:58:04

In Part Two of our 2024 Gen Con preview coverage, we go through an amazing amount of games that we are looking forward to demoing and picking up. We had a lot of fun recording this, but there are a few episode notes to mention as we lost some of our segments to recording corruption:

1) As a correction, Nexus Ops' first edition was 2005 but the second edition was 2012. Regardless, look up the new edition - the game is so very good.

2) Jason mentioned a game to pick up called Lone Wolves. This is from Wonderful World Board Games at booth 1356 and is priced at $20.

3) Mark mentioned Tír na nÓg from Grand Gamers Guild. They can be found at booth 2838. They are offering a deluxe version for $50.

4) Metrorunner can be found at Thunderworks Games' booth at 1363 for $60.

5) Rock Hard: 1977 is from Devir. They are at booth 2827.

Gen Con 2024 Preview: Food and Events25 Jul 202400:23:25

Part One of our Gen Con preview coverage, this more rambling and less structured than normal conversation with fellow Theater Geek Jason was recorded on July 3, 2024. In this half of the conversation, we're discussing what we do when we show up in Indy, the food we all like to eat (hiiii-yah!), and the non-gaming events that are fun to attend. In Part two we'll be discussing all the games we want to demo and pick up but you can listen to either part in either order and be just fine.

Board All The Time Episode 423 Jul 202401:02:32

This week, we head straight into the discussion and continue on to our longest episode yet. Our regular episodes will always try and be in that 45-60 minute range and we just barely tipped over this time. But we had a great time talking about old favourites, new reinterpretations, games that caught us entirely by surprise, and even accidentally kind of putting the same game on Table, Shelf, or Trade. Hope you enjoy it!

This episode's segments:

0:00 - Intro

0:19 - What's Been on the Table

9:12 - Topic of the Week: Why Should You Return to a Game?

25:22 - Why Did I Play That?: Isle of Cats Explore and Draw

1:00:11 - Outro

We'd also like to thank SoulProdMusic for the intro/outro music as well as mentioning our sponsors one more time, Robin's Nerd Supplies and Eco Owl Press.

Board All The Time Episode 1908 Apr 202501:08:10

Hey hey BATT Family! Thanks for your patience while this one came out a bit late. Please see the note below. But we had MacWagCon 2025 happen and we wanted to talk through all the games! We got to play an enormous amount of stuff over three days of gaming and it was a great array to be able to discuss. In addition to all of those we take a very quick jaunt through what can make a teach a difficult time (we'll definitely be revisiting this topic in the future) and unpacking the trauma that Scott ended up enduring in this week's Why Did I Play That?. We hope you enjoyed this episode and we'll catch you next week as we release Episode 20, our Top Ten Games That We Enjoy Teaching!

---   Notes!

1) Apologies on this episode being a week late. The week that I was intending to sit down and do this editing, we had a severe family emergency. When we got back home from that a few days later, we went through terrible storms and our power was knocked out for three days. Certainly not intentional to have all that happen, but thankfully all is well at this point.

2) Here's the link for Quinns doing his "Mastering the Teach" video. It's great and I still review it occassionally. https://www.shutupandsitdown.com/videos/how-to-teach-board-games-like-a-pro/

3) We said Hues and Clues at one point, we meant Hues and Cues. Whoops.

4) We aren't sponsored by MeepleSource, but I do love them dearly. If you want to check out their incredible Cat Lady resources, they're here: https://meeplesource.com/proddetail.php?prod=CatLady

We're going to have discussions about the games that helped form us both as gamers and as people. This one was particularly close to my heart and so I hope you enjoy it! We'll see you with Episode 1 on Tuesday!

Reviews: Ovation25 Mar 202500:21:07

Hey hey BATT Family! Today we are going to be reviewing Ovation which was provided to us by Grand Gamers Guild. This is an action selection, resource management, set collection game for 1-4 players and takes approximately 30 minutes to play. We hope you enjoy the review and moreso enjoy the game! Feel free to hit us up on any of our regular contact methods to let us know what your opinions are on Ovation!

This episode's segments:

00:00:00 - Intro

00:00:34 - How the Game Plays

00:04:26 - Learning Curve / Ease of Teach

00:05:50 - Artwork / Components / Iconography

00:12:14 - Replayability / Solo Mode

00:19:13 - Final Thoughts / Outro

---   Notes!

1) When discussing the ticket system, Mark says a word as "wane" instead of "wan". That's just Midwest accent, but you tomato/tomato yourself on that if he's wrong or not.

2) Not long after that, Mark does mention the solo mode and it's designer without referencing their name. The solo mode was designed by David Digby, not by Kirsten Lunde who did the main game.
