Bitesize - Chris Eldridge on Tony Rice's Church Street Blues 22 Oct 202500:22:31

This week's Bitesize episode features a conversation I had with Chris Eldridge from Punch Brothers and Mighty Poplar celebrating Tony Rice's classic album Church Street Blues.

Chris talks about Tony's ability to combine big musical gestures with intricate detail, how other musicians played better when they played with Tony and why you should listen to Church Street Blues on vinyl, if you can find a copy (but why that's not necessarily true of other albums).

This extract comes from a two part special I put together celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of Church Street Blues in 1983, including in-depth interviews with Wyatt Rice, Alison Krauss, Tim Stafford, Bryan Sutton and many more. I've included links below to those.

Tony Rice - Church Street Blues 40th anniversary:

- part 1 (Tim Stafford, Wyatt Rice, Mike Marshall, Alison Krauss, Bryan Sutton, Chris Eldridge & Caroline Wright)

- part 2 (Bob Minner, Jake Eddy, Justin Moses, Marcel Ardans, Scott Nygaard, Jason Keiser & tony_units)

Alison Krauss Remembers Tony Rice08 Jun 202400:21:14

Today - June 8th - is Tony Rice's birthday. To celebrate, I'm reposting the chat I had with Alison Krauss as part of the 'Church Street Blues' 40th anniversary celebrations last year. The final episodes ended up being almost 5 hours long, so I thought it would be fun to re-post this as a standalone episode for those who missed it (or just want to listen again to celebrate Tony's birthday).

In this episode Alison talks about what Tony's music means to her and shares some memories of spending time one on one with Tony.

It was a wonderful conversation to get to have and I hope you enjoy it.

If you missed the Church Street Blues episodes,  featuring Wyatt Rice, Bryan Sutton, Chris Eldridge and many more, you can listen here:

Jacob Jolliff Interview04 Jun 202400:49:57

My guest this week is Jacob Jolliff, who joins me to talk about his wonderful new record Instrumentals 2: Mandolin Mysteries

We talk about the process of writing the record and how many of the tunes began on piano rather than mandolin, plus the great band Jacob assembled to record and tour the album. We also chat about what it was like to sit in with Bela Fleck for part of the My Bluegrass Heart tour and some of the things Jacob leaned from Bela about rehearsing and leading a band in the process.

You can buy Mandolin Mysteries on Bandcamp on vinyl and as a digital download.

For more info, visit jacobjolliff.com or follow Jacob on Instagram or Facebook

You'll also find some cool performances of tracks from the record on Jacob's YouTube channel.

Happy picking!

Oliver Burkeman on Why Now is the Time To Do the Things You Love15 May 202400:58:04

My guest this week is Oliver Burkeman, best-selling author of the book 'Four Thousand Weeks - Time Management for Mortals.'

'Four Thousand Weeks' isn't a book about bluegrass, or American acoustic music...or even about music. But, it addresses so many of the the things that can trip us up and stop us from making the space in our lives for the things we love, like music.

I'm not entirely sure this podcast would exist if I hadn't read Oliver's book. The fact that it's lasted long enough for this to be episode #388 is definitely down to me staying on the bus (Oliver will explain what that means in the interview!)

We tend to defer our happiness to some unspecified point in the future, when all our chores are done, or work is finished, or the kids grow up or we retire. But Oliver argues strongly in favour of doing the things that make us happy right now.

I struggle with that, and I presume many of you do as well, so I decided to invite Oliver to come onto the podcast to talk about it and offer some advice.

This was a really fun conversation, full of big, but simple ideas, which I'm sure will resonate with many of you. I got a lot out of this one and I hope you do too.

You'll find more info on Oliver and the book at www.oliverburkeman.com. While you're there, I really recommend signing up to his mailing list, 'The Imperfectionist', for regular smaller doses of inspiration on how to build a meaningful life in an age of bewilderment.

Happy picking!

Dave Sinko - Capturing Sound for Punch Brothers and Edgar Meyer 07 May 202400:59:10

My guest this week is legendary sound engineer Dave Sinko.

Dave joins me to talk about his 17 year collaboration with Punch Brothers, including running their live sound, from using mics and pickups on every instrument, right down to single mic shows (and most points in between).

We also chatted about Dave's long standing collaboration with Edgar Meyer, recording some of the most influential records in all of acoustic music, including Uncommon Ritual, plus why building a racing yacht is very similar to building a mandolin (who knew!) and why he prefers the term 'recordist' to engineer.

This was such a fascinating conversation. Enjoy!

Bitesize - Gabe Witcher on first meeting Chris Thile and how Punch Brothers came together13 Aug 202500:13:38

My guest on this week's bitesize episode is Gabe Witcher. This extract comes from a longer conversation I had with Gabe in June 2023, directly after he'd played his final shows with Punch Brothers at Telluride.

Gabe talks about first meeting Chris Thile at a festival when they were kids; playing football together before they even got round to jamming; how they found the rest of the band that became Punch Brothers; their first shows together in New York City and how the emotion of playing the tunes they worked on back then hit him in those final Telluride shows.

Here's the full 2023 interview with Gabe if you want to hear the whole conversation.

Happy picking.

How to Coach a Band with Stephen Mougin (Sam Bush Band/Dark Shadow Recording)23 Apr 202401:04:31

My guest this week is Stephen Mougin, guitarist in The Sam Bush Band and founder of Dark Shadow Recording.

In this episode we talk about Stephen's work as a band coach. We chat about his training as a vocal teacher, what bands should be working on, including how they should be rehearsing, why preparing for the studio isn't really all that different from preparing to play live and how to listen to music in order to learn from it.

There are so many fascinating insights that will be invaluable to bands and individual musicians, as well as to music fans who just want to understand more about the music they listen to.

To find out more about Stephen's band coaching, check out the band coaching video on his website or visit www.stephenmougin.com

Kristina R Gaddy on the Banjo’s Hidden History (part 2 - new interview)16 Apr 202400:21:24

Kristina R. Gaddy joins me again to celebrate the paperback release of her fascinating  book “Well of Souls: Uncovering the Banjo's Hidden History”.

We chat about the reception to the book's publication in hardback, what information has come to light since publication, Kristina's hopes that her book will inspire others to pick up where she left off and dig deeper, plus how Beyonce's 'Cowboy Carter', featuring Rhiannon Giddens (who wrote the foreword to Kristina's book)  increased the attention on the themes the the book deals with.

It was a treat getting to chat to Kristina again. If you missed the original episode,  I've reposted it as the episode before this (#380) so you can listen again.

Kristina R Gaddy on the Banjo’s Hidden History (part 1 - original interview re-post)16 Apr 202401:09:40

**This interview was originally posted in September 2022**

My guest this week is Kristina R. Gaddy, who joins us to discuss her fascinating  book “Well of Souls: Uncovering the Banjo's Hidden History”.

We chat about how she came to write the book and some of the key discoveries she made along the way, in particular the banjo’s unknown history as an instrument of ritual and rebellion.

Kristina’s research in diaries, letters, archives, and art, traces the banjo’s beginnings from the seventeenth century, when enslaved people of African descent created and carried this unique instrument as they were transported and sold by slaveowners throughout the Americas, to Suriname, the Caribbean, and the colonies that became U.S. states.

It’s a fascinating book and, I hope you’ll agree, makes for a fascinating conversation.

Matt Glaser - Celebrating 15 Years of Berklee's American Roots Music Program09 Apr 202400:56:06

My guest this week is Matt Glaser, Artistic Director of Berklee's Center for American Roots Music.

Matt joins me to celebrate 15 years of the program, but also to delve into some of the themes of his superb Keynote  Speech at IBMA 2023. In the speech, Matt sets out the idea that American music can be seen as one thing, rather than simply a series of genres,  and goes on to give countless examples of early musical connections between styles.

We chat about his approach, how music education differs in the UK and US and why being curious is more important than being right.

There's a link to his IMBA speech below and I strongly recommend you go and check it out if you haven't seen it. It's wonderful.

I loved this conversation and hope you do too.

Bitesize - Jarrod Walker on playing with Billy Strings, plugging in and pedals06 Aug 202500:19:54

My guest for this week's Bitesize episode is Jarrod Walker, best known to most of you as the mandolin player in Billy Strings' band.

This is a segment of a longer interview from 2022. In this section Jarrod talks about getting the gig with Billy, how it was both the most progressive and the most traditional gig he'd had, learning to play plugged in and experimenting with pedals.

The full interview (link below if you're interested) covers much more, including what Chris Thile taught him about learning fiddle tunes, how he almost ended up selling instruments for a living rather than playing them and going from landscaping one day during the pandemic to playing a live streamed gig at Red Rocks the next.

To connect with Jarrod and find out where you can catch a show, check out the links below:

Lindsay Lou - Knowing Where You Come From to Know Where You Want to Go26 Mar 202400:56:57

My guest this week is Lindsay Lou, who joins me to talk about her wonderful record Queen of Time.

We talk about the arc of Lindsay's creative journey, from her previous record Southland to this record, and beyond. We also chat about why it's important to know where you came from, both personally and musically, and why that led to Lindsay using interviews with her grandmother on two tracks on the record, plus I got the chance to ask about Lindsay's recent experience of joining the Transatlantic Sessions tour in the UK.

This was a fascinating conversation to get to be part of.

You can find out more about Lindsay at www.lindsayloumusic.com

Ethan Sherman interview05 Mar 202401:03:13

My guest this week is guitarist Ethan Sherman.

Ethan joins me to talk about his new record 'Passages', which is due out on March 8th. We chat about working with producer Wes Corbett on the project, why it was important to write for specific players and how Ethan came to string band music in the first place.

We also chat about a wonderful book Ethan co-wrote with Adam Levy called 'String Theories'. I've been working with it for a couple of weeks and it's really inspired me to focus more on where I want to get to on guitar. I can't recommend it enough.

Ethan is also Michael Buble's touring guitarist - but we don't really talk about that at all!

You can find out more about the book on the String Theories website and more about Ethan at ethanshermanmusic.com

Missy Raines - Standing Gently on the Shoulders of Tradition27 Feb 202400:57:41

My guest this week is Missy Raines.

We talk about Missy's wonderful new album 'Highlander' and her journey from being a bass player to becoming a singer/songwriter and bandleader. Along the way Missy talks about being part of a musical tradition, what that means to her, how working with producer Alison Brown shaped the record and why it felt like coming home to a place she'd never left to begin with.

It's a great record and I really enjoyed the conversation.

George Jackson on Recording 100 Fiddle Tunes in a Day20 Feb 202400:53:37

My guest this week is fiddle player George Jackson.

George, originally from New Zealand,  now living in Nashville, won the 2022 IBMA Instrumentalist Of The Year Momentum Award.

He's played with a wide range of artists with artists such as The Jacob Jolliff Band, Jake Blount, Tall Poppy String Band, The Local Trio, Front Country, Peter Rowan and Missy Raines.

He joins me to chat about a fascinating project he's working on with Tristan Scroggins, called The Old Time 100. George and Tristan recorded 100 fiddle tunes in a day. Our conversation starts off with the obvious question ('Why?') and spreads from there into a wide ranging chat about how they chose the tunes, which versions they went for, how the tracks were recorded, why their key purpose is educational (although they sound great to listen to as well!)  and the differences (and similarities) between old time and bluegrass.

I really enjoyed this one.

Kyle Tuttle (Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway)14 Feb 202400:54:04

My guest this week is Kyle Tuttle.

Lots of you will know Kyle as the banjo player in Molly Tuttle's band Golden Highway, but he also has a fantastic new record called 'Labor of Lust', which he's joining me to chat about in this episode.

We talk about the roots of the record, the theme that runs through it, Earl Scruggs' influence on Kyle (and the banjo in general) and using effects on the banjo, both to change the sound in the studio and to get a fuller sound live, particularly as the venues Kyle plays with Molly keep getting bigger.

It's a great record and I had a fantastic conversation with Kyle.

Jim Mills on Earl Scruggs and pre-War Gibson banjos07 Feb 202400:38:59

This is the final episode in the series celebrating Earl Scruggs' 100th birthday.

My guest for this one is Jim Mills. Jim is a fantastic banjo player, who spent over a decade playing with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. He's also an expert on pre-War Gibson banjos, so is the perfect person to talk about how the banjos Earl played influenced the sound and, as a result, the type of banjo people look for to this day.

If you want to find out more about Jim, including infohon his business buying and selling vintage banjos, check out his website prewargibsonbanjos.com

If you haven't checked out parts 1- 3 ( featuring Tony Trischka, Kristin Scott Benson, Jerry Douglas, Alison Brown. Tim O'Brien, Trey Hensley, Kyle Tuttle, Alan Munde and Willow Osborne), go and listen to those too!

This is part 3 of the celebration of Earl Scruggs' 100th birthday.

In this episode we're talking about Earl's influence on the younger generation of players and also celebrating his wonderful guitar playing.

You'll hear from:

  • Trey Hensley, on Earl being his main influence on the guitar, as well as getting to meet and play with Earl
  • Kyle Tuttle, on why no banjo record is complete without a tip of the hat to Earl Scruggs and why Earl is perhaps one of the most imitated musicians in history
  • Willow Osborne, on Earl's influence on her as a very young picker and how that influence is still there in the young players she sees today

If you haven't checked out Part 1 (Tony Trischka, Kristin Scott Benson and Alan Munde) or Part 2 (Jerry Douglas, Alison Brown and Tim O'Brien), go and listen to those too!

Joe Brent - Adhyâropa Records : Reimagining What a Record Label Is30 Jul 202500:51:47

My guest this week is Joe Brent, founder of Adhyâropa Records.

So many of the guests I've had on the podcast have released their albums through Adhyâropa and I was fascinated to find out more about the label.

We talk about why Joe set up the label in the first place, the reasons why it's almost impossible for musicians to make a living today, how Adhyâropa is trying to change that and why, in the end, it's just about helping people put out good music.

There's so much to learn in this one, whether you're a musician trying to navigate building a career or, like me, you're a fan who wants to understand how musicians get paid and what we can do to support our favourite artists.

There's something in this episode for everyone.

For more info on Adhyâropa, to submit your project or just to contact Joe, visit  www.adhyaroparecords.com

To buy music, visit Adhyâropa's Bandcamp store

I loved this conversation - I hope you enjoy it too.

Earl Scruggs 100th Birthday Tribute part 2 - Jerry Douglas, Alison Brown and Tim O'Brien24 Jan 202401:26:02

This is part 2 of the celebration of Earl Scruggs' 100th birthday.

Earl's influence on bluegrass is huge, as you'll hear from my guests this week.

You'll hear from:

  • Jerry Douglas, on Earl being one of the first sounds he heard and why starting The Earls of Leicester felt like a calling
  • Alison Brown on why the timing of Earl's arrival on the bluegrass scene (and the wider music scene) had such an impact on the music, and on Earl's career
  • Tim O'Brien on Earl's role in the development of bluegrass and the part Louise Scruggs, Earl's wife, played in his career

All of these are brand new interviews carried out for these episodes. They've been an absolute joy to put together and there's still more to come. In the meantime, don't forget to check out part 1, featuring Tony Trischka, Kristin Scott Benson and Alan Munde.

Happy picking (and happy birthday, Earl)!
