Shopping All the Way to the Woods: How the Outdoor Industry Sold Nature to America isn't necessarily about men's style, but it explores an important theme that can be easily transposed to any discussion about menswear. It's a book about how people buy outdoor gear to create an idea of a more "authentic self" and connect with nature. Derek chats with the author and professor, Rachel Gross, about her research and how commercial culture is tied to creating identity.

Dan’s songwriting credits are like a murderer's row of hits.

The guy is a hit factory and just released his new ep, "Dancing on the Moon".

Dan and I discuss the state of the industry, songwriting vs publishing, bowling shirts from the 90s, puppet shows, K-Pop, art, his journey to songwriting, and words and music in six seconds.

PATREON PREVIEW - Blamo! Presents: Derek Guy - Fall Vibes and Business Casual10 Nov 202200:20:23

Patreon Preview from Blamo!

Last month, the New York Times published a post about how men dress when returning to the office. For all the speculation about the end of office dress codes, it turns out, people are dressing much like they were before the pandemic—basically in business casual. In this episode, we talk about how men can do business casual better, as well as what we've purchased for the fall.

Angelo Urrutia of 4S Designs Returns!31 Oct 202200:59:20

This week, my guest is Angelo Urrutia – founder and creative director of 4S Designs.

He’s been on the pod before, right as he was about to debut his brand...in March 2020. Not sure if you remember that time but things got a bit nuts – and so did Angelo. I said this on the Patreon episode last week. I believe he’s the best designer out there right now running the best brand in the world. Everything about 4S is rewarding. The garments are absurdly over-engineered, there are convictions to what he makes. If you don’t want to dig deeper, you can still find it, buy it, and enjoy it for what it is. It’s beautiful.

Angelo and I discuss working through the pandemic, what he learned at Engineered Garments, how he has been handling all the attention, finding himself through his brand, and what’s next for 4S Designs.

PATREON PREVIEW - The JJJ Show - "Oh fiddlesticks, my quiche fell!"13 Oct 202200:21:10

We get a recap from Jian on his travels to Japan and learn how the universe bent toward Jon’s favor by wildly inconveniencing Jian. Jon and Jeremy talk about how they both went to New York, but not at the same time, and how Catholic schools have the hardest names. We kind of chat about Fashion Week, and a few brands that have caught our eyes lately, Jon shows off some new pants, we learn about an upcoming archive sale Jian has in the works, and some anime shows Jeremy should check out. Jeremy also discloses an absolute treasure mine of Loro Piana gear, and then he waits way too long to send the link in the group chat. We find out Drake's is surprisingly cheaper in the UK and we close the episode by boring the shit out of Jian.

PATREON PREVIEW - Die, Workwear! - Path Dependency13 Jun 202400:20:35

Patreon Preview from Blamo!

Recently, Peter asked Derek to elaborate a bit more on the concept of path dependency in clothing and getting dressed. For what it's worth, path dependence is a social science concept that relates to why we do the things we do.

e.g. Why do we wear jeans and why are they blue?

The original thread is here

Derek admits it's a nerdy way of looking at clothes, but this is Die, Workwear! and the insight we all love!

Blamo! Presents: Derek Guy - The New Faces of Tailoring - PATREON PREVIEW07 Jul 202200:25:00

When Derek visited Naples about ten years ago, many of the older Italian tailors told him they were worried about the future of their trade. As more tailors retire, fewer and fewer young people are taking their place. Yet, the scarcity of young tailors has only made it more exciting to see new people pick up needles and shears. In our first episode of Blamo Presents: Derek Guy, we talk about some of the more exciting tailoring houses today, what you can expect to pay for a bespoke suit, and the stash of rare Apparel Arts magazines Jeremy found at a garage sale.

Silas explains how he went from restoring an old watch he got when he was 14 and selling it on eBay to launching an e-commerce platform for amazing watches, his experience in law, selling his own collection of watches for cash to get by, and how a good lifestyle photo can go a long way. Jeremy and Silas swap stories of breaking into the watch world, talk about the intersection of independent watchmaking and fine art and even makes Silas choose what watch he would save in a fire.

The JJJ Show - "I was cart jacked in Japan" - PATREON PREVIEW09 Jun 202200:20:01

On the first episode of the Triple J show, Jeremy, Jian, and Jon fantasize about future ad-read possibilities, what they’ve been up to since that last time they chatted, clout chasing via Japan, and that one time Jian got cart jacked IRL. Jon grills Jian about the food at the Met and Goldhouse Co. Galas. They also talk about the latest Dior and Balenciaga collections, generational reference points, Jian expounds on his concept of “Hoodie Couture” and Jeremy applies postmodernist criticism to haute couture which prompts Jon to try to say something in French. The guys talk about how inspiration sources have changed over the years and if it’s harder now to develop a personal sense of style.

Hit us up with questions, comments, thoughts, and any topics you’d like the J’s to discuss on the Blamo! Slack Channel.

Adam Conover is Talking about Everything06 Jun 202201:27:00

Adam Conover joins us this week to talk about, well, literally everything.

Jeremy and Adam discuss how he lives his values within reason, from having an existence free of Amazon and Google to taking the bus rather than owning a car and taking Alto ride shares over those other bigger names. Adam also gives his classically eloquent opinions on fast fashion, the struggle of finding the right suits for his new Netflix show, The G-Word, college athletes not getting paid enough, traditional Ivy style, being a collector of video games, the uncoolness of being rich, and so much more.

Matt Lambert of Factor's and the Evolution of the Suit30 May 202201:05:30

This week Jeremy talks to Matt Lambert about being an OG from Sid Mashburn, balancing being a musician while simultaneously starting his career, and how the pandemic helped give birth to his new brand, Factor’s. Matt discusses disregarding trends, the "dramatic moments of attitude" in his suits, the attention to how a garment’s lifespan impacts his designs, and why his models are pouting in mirrors and slouching to show off the functional 'fits all in our Season 11 premiere.

Clothing is a Language with Jason Jules31 Mar 202201:13:30

This week on Blamo! Extra, we talk to Jason Jules

Jason has been a force behind the scenes in the worlds of music and fashion for a minute, working with Jamiroquai, A Bathing Ape, Paul Smith, and Drake’s (to name a few), plus his own projects under the name Garmsville. Lately, his Black Ivy: A Revolt in Style has been blowing up in the world of menswear, including earning a co-sign from Tyler, the Creator.

In our conversation, we talk about why musicians are launching brands, how we communicate through what we wear, and what Black Ivy is really about. It’s so epic, we’re crossing the whole ep over into the main Blamo feed to give a bigger taste of Extra to a wider audience.

Our Patreon support is so important for us to keep going and we have big plans - so if you dig it, please share it with a friend!

AMA with Derek Guy of Die! Workwear - PATREON PREVIEW17 Mar 202200:21:11

This week on Extra, Jeremy and Rob decided to invite Derek Guy back for the return of the AMA. You undoubtedly know him from his writing for his blog, Die Workwear and Put This On or his epic Twitter account. He’s so thoughtful and knowledgable, we wanted to get his takes on your questions, too.

We covered a lot of ground, including y2k fashion, stolen valor, how much of a wardrobe item is too many, how Derek keeps interested in classic menswear, and his own writing inspo. He even lets us in on why he thinks women make the best menswear writers.

Deep dives, tangents, and hot takes, oh my. AMA is back, baby!
