Starship Troopers (1997) - Nostalgia Check26 sept. 202600:56:35

SEND US SOME FAN MAIL

We are rewinding the clock and rewatching Paul Verhoeven’s outrageous sci-fi action classic to find out if this movie still holds up nearly 30 years later.

Before the internet turned Starship Troopers into one of the most frequently misunderstood cult movies of the 1990s, it was a giant bug killing, space fighting, military science fiction movie packed with explosions, gore, cheesy performances, wild special effects, and a whole lot more going on underneath the surface.

In this episode of Nostalgia Check, BJ and Juan revisit Starship Troopers and take a fresh look at the movie we remember from the 1990s. Does the action still deliver? Do the giant bugs still look awesome? How well do the practical effects and visual effects hold up? Is the acting intentionally over the top or just wonderfully ridiculous? And perhaps most importantly, does the satire and political commentary behind Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers still land today?

We talk about Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, Neil Patrick Harris, Michael Ironside, Jake Busey, Clancy Brown and the rest of the Starship Troopers cast, along with the movie’s unforgettable battle sequences, giant alien bugs, military propaganda, futuristic society, controversial themes, brutal violence, ridiculous dialogue, and massive 1990s sci-fi movie energy.

We also look at Starship Troopers as a piece of 1990s movie history and ask the bigger Nostalgia Check question: Are we remembering the movie accurately, or are we remembering the version of it that existed in our heads?

This isn’t just a review. It’s a rewatch.

Nostalgia Check is BJ in the Morning’s movie series where we revisit movies from across the last several decades, putting our memories and nostalgia to the test. Some movies get better with age. Some don’t. And some turn out to be completely different movies than we remembered.

So grab your helmet, report for duty, and join us for another Nostalgia Check.

The Abyss (1989) - Nostalgia Check19 sept. 202601:02:06

SEND US SOME FAN MAIL

The Abyss (1989) is finally getting its Nostalgia Check!

For this episode of Nostalgia Check presented by BJ in the Morning, we are watching James Cameron’s underwater science fiction epic for the FIRST TIME. No nostalgia. No rose colored glasses. No childhood memories telling us something is better than it actually is. Just two movie fans going back to 1989 to find out whether The Abyss still holds up.

Starring Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Michael Biehn, The Abyss follows a civilian underwater drilling crew recruited to investigate a mysterious sunken nuclear submarine. What starts as a dangerous recovery mission quickly turns into something much bigger when the crew encounters something they were never expecting deep beneath the ocean.

So after more than 35 years, the big question is:

DOES THE ABYSS STILL HOLD UP?

Is this an overlooked James Cameron masterpiece?

Does the underwater filmmaking still look incredible?

Do Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Michael Biehn deliver?

Does the science fiction story still work?

Are the practical effects and visual effects still impressive?

And most importantly…

DOES THE ABYSS PASS THE NOSTALGIA CHECK?

Join Brendan and Juan for another episode of Nostalgia Check as we revisit the movies that shaped our moviegoing history, discover movies we somehow missed, and put nostalgia itself on trial.

Nostalgia Check is all about looking back at movies from across the last several decades and asking a simple question: are these movies actually as good as we remember, or have we been letting nostalgia do the heavy lifting?

Expect movie reviews, movie discussions, comedy, movie trivia, behind the scenes stories, filmmaking history, unpopular opinions, nostalgia, and plenty of arguments about whether a movie deserves to be remembered.

If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe to BJ in the Morning and follow Nostalgia

Lincoln (2012) - Nostalgia Check04 sept. 202600:52:14

SEND US SOME FAN MAIL

This week on Nostalgia Check, we finally watch LINCOLN (2012) for the first time! Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed historical drama starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln takes us into one of the most important and turbulent moments in American history as Lincoln fights to pass the 13th Amendment and bring an end to slavery during the final months of the Civil War.

But does Lincoln actually live up to its massive reputation?

Brendan and Juan break down Lincoln for the first time, discussing Daniel Day-Lewis’s Oscar-winning performance, Steven Spielberg’s direction, the historical drama, the performances, the writing, the pacing, the Civil War setting, Abraham Lincoln’s character, the 13th Amendment, and whether Lincoln deserves its reputation as one of the greatest historical movies of the 21st century.

Is Lincoln a masterpiece? Is it too slow? Does Daniel Day-Lewis completely disappear into the role? And most importantly, does LINCOLN pass the Nostalgia Check?

We also make a BIG change to the Nostalgia Check wheel of years. Instead of continuing to randomly select movies from 2015 through 2025, we removed the entire 2015 to 2025 range and added the COMPLETE 1980s to the wheel. That means our movie time capsule is getting even bigger, and we could be heading all the way back to 1980 for our next movie.

Nostalgia Check is our ongoing movie series where we revisit movies we remember, discover movies we missed, and decide whether they’re actually as good as we remember. We aren’t just asking whether a movie is nostalgic. We’re asking whether it still holds up.

Watch our first time reaction and discussion of Lincoln (2012), then let us know in the comments: Does Lincoln pass the Nostalgia Check?

Of the Two Abe Lincoln movies we watched for 2012, which was better?

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012) - Nostalgia Check29 août 202600:59:07

SEND US SOME FAN MAIL

We’re going back to 2012 for a full rewatch of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter!

Before Lincoln was known as the 16th President of the United States, apparently he was also spending his nights hunting vampires with a silver-coated axe. Benjamin Walker stars as Abraham Lincoln in this completely ridiculous historical fantasy action horror movie directed by Timur Bekmambetov and produced by Tim Burton.

In this episode, we revisit Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter to see if this bizarre mashup of American history, vampires, Civil War action, horror, fantasy, and over-the-top CGI is actually as entertaining as we remember. Does the movie deserve more credit for its insane premise and visual style, or does the concept work better as a joke than it does as a full-length movie?

We’re talking Benjamin Walker as Abraham Lincoln, Dominic Cooper as Henry Sturges, Anthony Mackie as Will Johnson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Mary Todd Lincoln, Rufus Sewell as Adam, the vampire mythology, the silver axe, the Civil War storyline, the vampire Confederate army, Timur Bekmambetov’s action style, the ridiculous slow-motion sequences, the CGI, the historical liberties, and whether Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter passes our Nostalgia Check.

Is Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter actually a good movie? Is it a guilty pleasure? Is it one of the most ridiculous historical fantasy movies ever made? Or is it exactly the kind of insane 2012 movie we need to appreciate all over again?

Join us for our Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter rewatch and let’s find out if this vampire-hunting presidential action movie still holds up.

On this episode of NOSTALGIA TEST by BJ in the Morning, we watch Snowpiercer for the very first time… and let’s just say this movie does NOT go where we expected.

We break down:

  • Our first reactions (and confusion)
  • The wild tonal shifts
  • That ending…
  • Whether this movie actually works or is just chaos on rails

Is this a hidden sci-fi classic… or just a weird experiment that somehow got greenlit?

Welcome to BJ in the Morning  where nostalgia gets tested and first-time watches get REAL.

We’re heading back to 2023 on this episode of We Have Seen That to revisit the musical origin story of the world’s most famous chocolate maker, Wonka.

Brendan and Juan break down their first impressions of the movie and whether the colorful prequel to Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory actually earns its place in the candy-coated legacy.

We dig into the IMDb details, production background, box office numbers, and critic scores, and see what audiences thought of Timothée Chalamet stepping into the purple coat. Then we jump over to the internet’s favorite chaos machine Letterboxd to read some of the funniest, harshest, and occasionally thoughtful reviews from movie fans.

After that, we break down the full plot of Wonka, following the young chocolatier as he arrives in the city with big dreams, questionable business planning, and an inevitable encounter with a tiny orange man. We talk about the musical numbers, the wild candy inventions, the villains running the chocolate cartel, and the moments that actually surprised us.

Finally, we give our official scores for the movie and decide whether Wonka is a sweet treat, a forgettable dessert, or something in between.

Before wrapping up, we tease the next episode of YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THAT, where we stay in 2023 and check out the summer camp slasher comedy Hell of a Summer.

Then we dive into a full spoiler discussion of Scream 7, breaking down the story, the kills, the mystery, and how it stacks up against the rest of the franchise. We compare it to classics like Scream 2, Scream 4, and the recent reboot era with Scream and Scream VI.

Is this sequel a worthy continuation of the Ghostface legacy?

Does it bring something new to the formula?

And most importantly… where does it rank in the Scream franchise?

Burn After Reading (2008) - Nostalgia Check28 févr. 202600:47:55

SEND US SOME FAN MAIL

In this episode of You Haven’t Seen That, we dive into one of the most chaotic, absurd, and hilariously pointless crime stories ever put to film: Burn After Reading, written and directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen.

Released in 2008, this Coen Brothers dark comedy stars Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, and Tilda Swinton and somehow turns a CD full of meaningless CIA memoirs into a spiral of blackmail, paranoia, gym employees with zero survival instincts, and government officials who truly do not care.

We break down:
 • The absolutely unhinged performance from Brad Pitt
 • Whether the plot is genius satire or just aggressively pointless on purpose
 • Box office performance and critical reception
 • Our first impressions vs. what we expected going in
 • And why this movie feels even more relevant in today’s “everyone is dumb but confident” era

If you love dark comedies, Coen Brothers movies, or watching attractive people make terrible decisions for 90 minutes, this one’s for you.

And at the end of the episode… we spin the wheel to decide our next batch of movies for the year. New year. New blind spots. More movies we probably should have seen already.

If you’re new here, You Haven’t Seen That is the podcast where we revisit the last 30+ years of movies : the classics, the cult hits, the massive box office successes, and the films we somehow missed completely.

On this episode of We Have Seen That, Brendan and Juan revisit the sci fi action film Jumper, a globe hopping teleportation adventure that defined a slice of late 2000s blockbuster storytelling. This time we are not discovering it for the first time. We are looking back at what we remember, what stuck with us, and whether the movie holds up after revisiting it today.

We break down our history with the film, discuss why it left an impression, and examine how it fits into the era of high concept action driven by visual effects and franchise potential. From cast performances to directing choices, production background, box office results, and audience reactions, we explore the full context surrounding its release and reception.

As always, the conversation includes sarcastic commentary, honest reactions, and plenty of back and forth as we dive into the plot, memorable sequences, and the creative decisions that still spark debate. We compare our memories of the movie to the reality of watching it again and talk about whether nostalgia helps or hurts the experience. Special shoutout to Kevin from Miserable Hair People, and Aeric from Geeksplained Bookclub Podcast for sharing their thoughts on the movie!

We’re closing out 1992 the only way that makes sense… by finally watching A Few Good Men.

In this episode of Nostalgia Check presented by BJ in the Morning, we admit our sins: somehow, someway, this iconic courtroom drama completely slipped past us. So we fixed that. And yes, you can’t handle the truth was said. A lot.

We break down why we hadn’t seen A Few Good Men before, then dive into the movie’s all-star cast and production crew, including Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Rob Reiner, and Aaron Sorkin’s razor-sharp script. We cover box office numbers, how the film performed on release, and where it now lands with critics and audiences using IMDb and Letterboxd reviews.

From there, we walk through the plot, unpack our favorite moments, debate what still works (and what feels VERY 1992), and quote the absolute hell out of it. Courtroom monologues, iconic lines, and scenes that somehow live in pop culture even if you’ve never seen the movie — until now.

Why Disney Keeps Remaking Classics (and Why We’re Tired of It) ft. Kevin from Miserable Hair People29 nov. 202501:17:57

SEND US SOME FAN MAIL

Disney is deep in its live-action remake era, and honestly… we’re exhausted. In this episode, we dive into why Disney keeps recreating its animated classics, which ones actually work, which ones feel totally pointless, and why most of them miss the magic of the originals.

We talk about the hits like Cinderella and Cruella, the “just okay” ones like Aladdin and The Jungle Book, and the absolute “why did they do this” tier like The Lion King, Mulan, and The Little Mermaid.

We also talk about nostalgia, corporate strategy, fan expectations, and how Hollywood keeps using familiar IP as a safety net — even when the remakes add nothing new.

And of course, we go all in on the one we’re truly dreading: the upcoming Moana live-action remake. It’s too soon, unnecessary, and makes us wonder if Disney has run out of ideas entirely.

If you’re tired of Disney repainting its own classics and calling it innovation, this episode is for you.

The Black Phone 2 Review | Horror Sequel or Wrong Number?08 nov. 202500:52:12

SEND US SOME FAN MAIL

We picked up The Black Phone 2, and… yeah, we kinda wish we hadn’t. In this BJ in The Morning episode, we review the horror sequel, talk about Ethan Hawke’s return, and see how it stacks up against the first film and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Brutally honest, and full of laughs — plus our Golden COUCHIES Awards for The Table Lamp, WTF CGI, and The Bathroom Break moments.

We compare it to the first Black Phone and the dream-stalking terror of A Nightmare on Elm Street, talking about what worked, what didn’t, and how it fits (or doesn’t) into modern horror... but let’s just say… the line’s a little static.

Then we give it the full Golden COUCHIES treatment, with our ridiculous awards:
The Table Lamp – for the moment that barely lit things up
WTF CGI – for the “wait… what was THAT?” scene
The Bathroom Break Award – the part you can safely miss without losing a thing

Is KPop Demon Hunters WORTH the Hype?! - Movie Review25 sept. 202500:45:29

SEND US SOME FAN MAIL

In this episode of BJ in The Morning, we dive deep into the action-packed, over-the-top world of KPop Demon Hunters! From jaw-dropping fight sequences to unexpectedly hilarious moments, we break down how this wild movie made us feel and share our unfiltered reactions. Whether you’re a KPop fan, a horror/action lover, or just curious about crazy cinema, this review is for you.

We also debut our brand-new award system, The Golden Couchies! 🛋️ We hand out awards like:

1.The Table Lamp Award

For the character who showed up, did absolutely nothing, and vanished like they were never there.

2.Pre Christmas Socks Award

For the plot hole so big, even 20 years of friendship debates can’t patch it.

3.The “Wait, What?” Award

For the scene that made us both look at each other like… huh?

4.The Goosebump Award

For the one scene that actually gave us chills — and not just because the theater A/C was cranked.

5.The WTF CGI Award

For the computer effects that looked like someone’s nephew made them on Windows 98.

6.The Michael Bay Boom Award

For the moment with the biggest explosions, loudest chaos, or most unnecessary slow-motion shot.

7.The Wallpaper Pick

For the one frame so pretty, we’d actually hang it in our living rooms — or at least set it as our group chat background.

8.The Bathroom Break Pass

For the scene so skippable, even best friends of 20 years wouldn’t pause it for each other

And the most important awards of them all!

The Mother Approved Award

For the movie that passes the ultimate BJ in the Morning test: it’s fun, it’s solid, and it’s so rewatchable we’d even recommend it to our moms. This is the gold star seal of approval for films we think are genuinely great and worth coming back to

The Grounded Forever Award

For the movie so bad, it’s like getting grounded as a kid — you sit through it once, swear you’ll never do it again, and definitely don’t want a sequel. These are the films we’d happily erase from movie night forever.

Join us as we laugh, rant, and celebrate the chaos of KPop Demon Hunters. If you love fun movie reviews, podcast reactions, and award shows for the couch potatoes among us, this episode is perfect for you.
