Live from Bitcoin Beach in El Zonte, El Salvador, we're diving into an interesting discussion of how Bitcoin can be a powerful tool to maintain election integrity through timestamping and immutable election data. Our guest, Carliño, shares his insights on Bitcoin as used in real-world situations beyond the financial systems, and how Guatemala became the first country to protect its election transparency using this revolutionary application of Bitcoin.

How can Bitcoin be used to protect election integrity? With Bitcoin’s blockchain technology, the timestamp of election data is possible using the blocks in Bitcoin as a reference for time. It’s not prone to fraud or manipulation and so, provides transparency in the voting process and strengthens the democratic power of a nation, as has been evident in Guatemala. This technological application remains true to the basic principles of Bitcoin of decentralization, transparency, and resistance to censorship.

The importance of resistance to censorship also happens to be very personal for Carliño. He and his family experienced being on the watch list of the United States Treasury Department without warning or due process. While in the middle of baseless, unjust sanctions, they have to let go of their employees and close their business. Carliño declares how the government has the upper hand and that decentralization is necessary to achieve financial sovereignty.

The conversation shifts to his life in Guatemala and what else Bitcoin can do for their country. As someone who grew up at a time of political unrest in Guatemala, the revolution truly empowered their citizens to live out their democracy, fully participative in overseeing their voting process. Now, with the help of Bitcoin to audit their elections, the citizen’s participation is rewarded with Satoshis. And this is a big step towards Bitcoin adoption. Carliño hopes that Central America becomes the first region to experience and maximize Bitcoin leading them to prosperity and better quality of life for its citizens.

She and her husband began brewing beer in their home and soon created the very popular local Micro-Bewery Cadejo, along with a string of 12 Cadejo restaurants.

Berlin, El Salvador is experiencing financial and social growth as a center point in it's own Bitcoin circular economy. The friendly townspeople in Berlin all know Charlie Stevens. 
Mike Peterson learns of Charlies Stevens journey from Ireland, to Spain, to Ireland, to Australia, to India, to Spain, to Ireland, to London, to Spain and finally, to El Salvador. 

Along the way Charlie Stevens earned a degree, got a job in finance, scratched his head about the inner-workings of failing balance sheets. He introduced Bitcoin to his insurance office colleagues, but upper management was not ready for it.

Charlie Stevens spent his pre-COVID time getting tough in Australia planning music festivals, hauling bananas and mining for gold. Australia during COVID became uncomfortable and Charlie headed back to Europe where he re-entered the world of finance. 

Back in Europe he lived a double life.  On one hand he worked in the world of fiat finance while on the other hand he bought and ran a bitcoin bank machine. Eventually, he realized his life was slowly tilting toward financial freedom, he decided to pack up and move to El Salvador.

El Zonte was Charlie's first stop in El Salvador but, Berlin was to become his true home.

This is the story of the rise of Berlin, El Salvador. This is also the story of the hard-working people behind the scenes. Gerardo and Evelyn started promoting the bitcoin standard in Berlin, ES and found that the townspeople were receptive to their efforts.

Mike Peterson learns that Berlin has very moderate climate, as it's altitude is approximately 1000 meters, which means no air conditioning and no heat required. It's a great alternative to living close to the beach where the temperature can be quite high.

Gerardo and Evelyn tell Mike Peterson that things have moved quickly in Berlin - on-boarding businesses, social programs, paint programs etc. 

"There was a lot of energy there, because they are not happy with the local government. They were not happy with the situation when it comes to tourism... They were like 'We need to do something... we need to do something ourselves, why wait for the government, why wait for somebody else to come and do something here? Let's do it ourselves" - Gerardo

When you buy an bank, don't tell them that you plan to use the safety deposit boxes as a multi-sig storage facility. That's the lesson Mike Smith, a contractor from Michigan, learned the first time he attempted to buy a bank. The seller scrapped the deal upon hearing his Bitcoin themed plans. 

That did not stop Mike Smith. He went on to buy another bank and, as per his plans, opened Bitcoin 101, a brick and mortar location that helps bitcoiners hold their multi-sig keys and it also doubles as a bitcoin education center. 

Mike Smith tells Mike Peterson about his next venture called Lake Satoshi. It's a yearly event that can handle 500 participants. The location is an old quarry converted into a pristine holiday lake that features camping, boating, fishing and a gorgeous forest backed beach-front. A modern-day Bitcoin-Woodstock style event takes place there every year in August.

The island had an issues with trash and animal feces mixing with the incoming tides. The rain storms would frequently leave the occupants without power, sometimes for days.

"For every trash bag they return full, we give them the equivalent of one dollar to their bolt cards that they in turn go to spend in the shops that have the POS that accept the payment with the bolt card. We inject bitcoin, we clean the island and at the same time we promote the circular economy with the POS in the shops of La Pirraya." - Quentin

Trash Collection Sunday's was just the precursor to future success on the island. Their idea was to invite people to visit the island for a giant island wide festival.  Which meant that all the cleaning work was incentivized by the upcoming festival.

It started with curiosity. Now, Clusk is living here. Mike Peterson chats with Clusk, a former Strike employee,  about his perspective on the changes and growth of El Salvador after Bitcoin was made legal tender. 
After a year and several months Clusk now calls El Salvador home. 
In March of 2023 he created The Palestra Society.

The first ALAS Surf Tour in El Salvador was organized by Karin Sierralta in 2004 well before the area was known as Surf City. Now, El Salvador is the first and only country to hold 6 major contests in one year. 

More recently, the ALAS Pro Surf Tour is the first contest to offer Bitcoin as prize money.

It's a bitcoin ATM that takes coins and exchanges them for bitcoin. Edgar Borja shows Mike Peterson his new bitcoin bank machine. Transactions only take seconds using the lighting network. It's a Salvadorean made machine that services the needs of people (worldwide) who don't use credit cards or bank cards.

The K1mini is small enough to sit on a countertop. The functionality works seamlessly with a little song and video when the transaction is complete. There is a version of the machine that can receive bills as well.

"It started like a dream ... and now it's a dream come true". How did Palo Verde come to be the favorite beach front boutique hotel location for countless Bitcoin meet-ups? Camilo Menéndez understood that the way to improve the condition of his country was to give back in three ways,  economical, social and environmental. Camilo Menéndez knew Palo Verde had to be sustainable. He explains to Mike Peterson that there were hard times. Building a high end hotel during high murder rates and running a hotel during the lockdowns seemed crazy.
But then... BITCOIN. It was a game changer. Palo Verde embraced Bitcoin.
The demographic of visitors changed dramatically. The number of visitors sky-rocketed.
Camilo Menéndez says he is training local staff from scratch and is committed to educational goals for the community.

He is interested in teaching an IT certification program. Information technology (IT) is the use of computers to create, process, store, retrieve and exchange all kinds of data and information.

Teaching students to set up IT systems such as, cloud services, how to do the basic blocking and tackling to set up a secure network.

An information technology system (IT system) is generally an information system, a communications system, or, more specifically speaking, a computer system — including all hardware, software, and peripheral equipment — operated by a limited group of IT users. 

Once the teaching program is set-up, the initial certification process will take approximately 6 months.

Wally tells Mike Peterson why he came back to El Salvador after living in China. Wally watched from over seas as bitcoin became legal tender. It was a turning point in his life. In late 2021 El Salvador had just re-opened the airport after COVID restrictions were removed, Wally was among the first people to arrive.
