Was Bitcoin Country a PR Stunt? Insider Reveals What Really Happened With Bukele and the Bitcoin Law | Lina Seiche
24 May 2025
00:52:36
What actually changed with El Salvador’s Bitcoin law? In this episode, Mike sits down with Lina Seiche, creator of The Little Hodler and founder of a Bitcoin-focused business now based in El Salvador. Lina shares what it's really like on the ground, from working with the Ministry of Education on a nationwide Bitcoin school curriculum to navigating the evolving business environment.
They dive into the recent IMF deal and the wave of commentary it triggered in the Bitcoin world. Despite speculation, Lina explains why the changes to legal tender status haven’t altered the daily use of Bitcoin or the momentum behind financial education in El Salvador. She also highlights the country’s push for education reform, giving a behind-the-scenes look at the public school program teaching kids real-world money skills before they even hit high school.
This episode gives an unfiltered view into a nation experimenting with currency, curriculum, and autonomy. It’s also a reminder that sometimes real innovation doesn’t come from headlines but from people quietly building, like Lina and her Little Hodler brand that’s now part of classrooms across the country.
If you’re curious about where Bitcoin meets policy, why financial education matters more than ever, or just want to know what a plush toy has to do with education reform, hit subscribe, drop a comment, and share this with someone who still thinks the IMF calls the shots.

How Bitcoin Technology Actually Saves Democracy And Election Integrity | Carliño
27 Jan 2024
01:19:03
Live from Bitcoin Beach in El Zonte, El Salvador, we're diving into an interesting discussion of how Bitcoin can be a powerful tool to maintain election integrity through timestamping and immutable election data. Our guest, Carliño, shares his insights on Bitcoin as used in real-world situations beyond the financial systems, and how Guatemala became the first country to protect its election transparency using this revolutionary application of Bitcoin.
How can Bitcoin be used to protect election integrity? With Bitcoin’s blockchain technology, the timestamp of election data is possible using the blocks in Bitcoin as a reference for time. It’s not prone to fraud or manipulation and so, provides transparency in the voting process and strengthens the democratic power of a nation, as has been evident in Guatemala. This technological application remains true to the basic principles of Bitcoin of decentralization, transparency, and resistance to censorship.
The importance of resistance to censorship also happens to be very personal for Carliño. He and his family experienced being on the watch list of the United States Treasury Department without warning or due process. While in the middle of baseless, unjust sanctions, they have to let go of their employees and close their business. Carliño declares how the government has the upper hand and that decentralization is necessary to achieve financial sovereignty.
The conversation shifts to his life in Guatemala and what else Bitcoin can do for their country. As someone who grew up at a time of political unrest in Guatemala, the revolution truly empowered their citizens to live out their democracy, fully participative in overseeing their voting process. Now, with the help of Bitcoin to audit their elections, the citizen’s participation is rewarded with Satoshis. And this is a big step towards Bitcoin adoption. Carliño hopes that Central America becomes the first region to experience and maximize Bitcoin leading them to prosperity and better quality of life for its citizens.
There is so much to unpack in this episode, from Bitcoin’s contribution to election transparency and what led to Carliño’s belief in Bitcoin’s potential and the great possibilities it can be used outside of financial sectors. Make sure to listen until the end!

Live from Bitcoin Beach in El Zonte, El Salvador, Sean Harris, a former professional basketball player turned laser eyes bitcoiner recounts how he started as a Bitcoin non-believer to become an advocate of this digital currency. In this episode, Sean and I discuss in depth Bitcoin’s significant role in the ever-changing socio-economic landscape and the excitement for the upcoming 2024 Bitcoin Halving Party.
Initially skeptical, Sean, like many no-coiners, was hesitant to delve into Bitcoin. However, persistent research and exploration led him to fully embrace Bitcoin in 2019. His experiences with various currencies and financial systems as an international basketball player illuminated the global advantages of Bitcoin. He recognized Bitcoin's immutable supply, rooted in the Bitcoin blockchain, its decentralization incentives, and its capacity as a dependable currency for cross-border Bitcoin transactions.
His journey down the Bitcoin rabbit hole helped him find a community that deepened his understanding of the digital currency even more. How President Bukele Used Bitcoin to Free El Salvador from the IMF | Luke Broyles
12 Jan 2024
02:11:57
Live from Bitcoin Beach in El Zonte, El Salvador, host Mike Peterson sat down with @Luke_Broyles to discuss Luke's background and insights into how Bitcoin is transforming economies like El Salvador's. This exciting episode explores how Bitcoin adoption in El Salvador under President Nayib Bukele is aligning incentives and improving lives through new monetary policy and digital currency.
Bitcoin reorients worldviews and value hierarchies. Bitcoin works because no one person controls it – it requires humility to admit that if any one of us had the power to manipulate Bitcoin, it would fail. This contrasts with the fiat system where centralized control leads to constant inflation.
The conversation also covers the rapid rate of Bitcoin adoption. Bitcoin is moving faster than the early internet. Luke suggests we could see 50% adoption globally in just a few years, rapidly changing cryptocurrency trends. As he says, "Most people will learn through pain" as fiat currencies fail.
Also highlighted is Luke's new film, The Case for Bitcoin, that aims to educate newcomers on bitcoin economics by meeting them where they are and explaining the technology in simple terms. With support from Bitcoin leaders like Robert Breedlove, the film could onboard thousands of new users.
This engaging episode is packed with perspectives on how Bitcoin economics can raise countries like El Salvador out of poverty.

How One Woman is Building a Bitcoin Economy From Scratch in Mexico | Isabella Santos
08 Mar 2025
01:15:16
Live from Bitcoin Beach in El Zonte, El Salvador, in this episode, I sit down with Isabella Santos, a journalist-turned-Bitcoiner who's building a circular economy on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. She shares her journey from working in mainstream media—where she quickly realized how broken the system was—to going all-in on Bitcoin and helping communities take control of their financial future.
We talk about how one of her students used their Bitcoin savings to pay for surgery, the challenges of onboarding merchants, and the mindset shift needed for people who’ve never been able to save before. She explains why Lightning Network is crucial for adoption in developing economies, how Bitcoin circular economies are creating real change, and why Bitcoiners visiting Isla Mujeres can play a key role in supporting the movement.
We also dive into her work with Get Based TV, a Bitcoin-focused production company creating high-quality content, including their documentary on Bitcoin adoption in Peru’s circular economy project, Motive. Isabella’s passion for financial freedom and community-driven Bitcoin adoption is contagious, and this conversation is packed with insights for anyone who wants to see Bitcoin make a real-world impact.
If you’re into real-world Bitcoin adoption, this is an episode you don’t want to miss.

Charlie Stevens - The Natural Investor Now Calls Berlin, El Salvador Home. Bitcoin Brings The Talent
30 Oct 2023
01:42:37
Berlin, El Salvador is experiencing financial and social growth as a center point in it's own Bitcoin circular economy. The friendly townspeople in Berlin all know Charlie Stevens. Mike Peterson learns of Charlies Stevens journey from Ireland, to Spain, to Ireland, to Australia, to India, to Spain, to Ireland, to London, to Spain and finally, to El Salvador.
Along the way Charlie Stevens earned a degree, got a job in finance, scratched his head about the inner-workings of failing balance sheets. He introduced Bitcoin to his insurance office colleagues, but upper management was not ready for it.
Charlie Stevens spent his pre-COVID time getting tough in Australia planning music festivals, hauling bananas and mining for gold. Australia during COVID became uncomfortable and Charlie headed back to Europe where he re-entered the world of finance.
Back in Europe he lived a double life. On one hand he worked in the world of fiat finance while on the other hand he bought and ran a bitcoin bank machine. Eventually, he realized his life was slowly tilting toward financial freedom, he decided to pack up and move to El Salvador.
El Zonte was Charlie's first stop in El Salvador but, Berlin was to become his true home. Mike and Charlie contrast the growth of Berlin verses El Zonte's early days of bitcoin adoption.
"There's over 50 vendors providing all kinds of goods and services in Bitcoin, I pay me rent in Bitcoin, I cut my hair, I buy my groceries all in Bitcoin..." - Charlie Stevens

This is the story of the rise of Berlin, El Salvador. This is also the story of the hard-working people behind the scenes. Gerardo and Evelyn started promoting the bitcoin standard in Berlin, ES and found that the townspeople were receptive to their efforts.
Mike Peterson learns that Berlin has very moderate climate, as it's altitude is approximately 1000 meters, which means no air conditioning and no heat required. It's a great alternative to living close to the beach where the temperature can be quite high.
Gerardo and Evelyn tell Mike Peterson that things have moved quickly in Berlin - on-boarding businesses, social programs, paint programs etc.
"There was a lot of energy there, because they are not happy with the local government. They were not happy with the situation when it comes to tourism... They were like 'We need to do something... we need to do something ourselves, why wait for the government, why wait for somebody else to come and do something here? Let's do it ourselves" - Gerardo
Now, there are many Bitcoiners in Berlin. The circular economy community is growing quickly.

Mike Smith - Buys a Bank to Run a MultiSig Storage Facility Called Bitcoin 101 and Digs Lake Satoshi
08 Oct 2023
00:42:27
When you buy an bank, don't tell them that you plan to use the safety deposit boxes as a multi-sig storage facility. That's the lesson Mike Smith, a contractor from Michigan, learned the first time he attempted to buy a bank. The seller scrapped the deal upon hearing his Bitcoin themed plans.
That did not stop Mike Smith. He went on to buy another bank and, as per his plans, opened Bitcoin 101, a brick and mortar location that helps bitcoiners hold their multi-sig keys and it also doubles as a bitcoin education center.
Mike Smith tells Mike Peterson about his next venture called Lake Satoshi. It's a yearly event that can handle 500 participants. The location is an old quarry converted into a pristine holiday lake that features camping, boating, fishing and a gorgeous forest backed beach-front. A modern-day Bitcoin-Woodstock style event takes place there every year in August.
Today, Mike Smith is in El Salvador with big plans. He's building 275 units. "Oh my God, this is like Miami 120 years ago ...this is where you wanna be, where the wind is at your back ... this is where capital is treated the best." - Mike Smith

We talk about how Bitcoin removes incentives for violence, making peaceful communication more profitable, and why this matters for all of us.
We break down El Salvador’s Bitcoin adoption, the impact of Bitcoin Beach on the global economy, as well as his strong opinions on why Bitcoin should remain purely money, and nothing else, especially not NFTs or ordinals.

Sam & Quentin - Bitcoin La Pirraya, How to Live on Bitcoin Island, The Story of Self-Made Incentive
03 Sep 2023
01:32:22
Your Mission : Go to a small tropical island, be-friend the local population. Your goal : Build a self-incentivized circular economy, culminating in an island wide festival featuring a soccer tournament, food vendors and a permanent garbage collection program. Your Tools : Bitcoin, community co-operation and several gallons of paint. Mike Peterson hears the inspiring journey of Sam & Quentin. It's a boy meets girl story, but it's also a story of courage, trust-building and innovation.
"The island was populated 40 years ago ... of people fleeing the war" - Quentin. The island had an issues with trash and animal feces mixing with the incoming tides. The rain storms would frequently leave the occupants without power, sometimes for days.
Enter : Trash Collection Sunday's for the kids "For every trash bag they return full, we give them the equivalent of one dollar to their bolt cards that they in turn go to spend in the shops that have the POS that accept the payment with the bolt card. We inject bitcoin, we clean the island and at the same time we promote the circular economy with the POS in the shops of La Pirraya." - Quentin
The kids were given Bolt Cards from Fernando Motolese of Brazil's Praia Bitcoin. See our previous episode "Fernando Motolese -Praia Bitcoin, ahead of the curve in Brazil. BTC on swipe cards, bracelets + more" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnktkRqG_Jo
"Everything worked out perfectly, better than we expected, actually" - Sam
Trash Collection Sunday's was just the precursor to future success on the island. Their idea was to invite people to visit the island for a giant island wide festival. Which meant that all the cleaning work was incentivized by the upcoming festival.
"The festival was a great idea in the sense that it gave purpose to our work..." - Quentin "The whole day was just full of emotion... it was very exciting to see all these people come together..." - Sam

Why Bitcoiners Should Pay Attention to Stablecoins on Lightning | Jesse Shrader
22 Feb 2025
00:46:46
Live from Bitcoin Beach in El Zonte, El Salvador in this episode, I sit down with Jesse Shrader from Amboss to dive deep into the Lightning Network, stablecoins on Bitcoin, and how we scale Bitcoin for real-world use.
We kick things off by discussing why stablecoins on Lightning could be a game changer and why most Bitcoiners aren’t paying enough attention to it. Jesse shares some eye-opening stats, like how Tether did $7 trillion in transactions last year, more than Visa, and explains why stablecoins need Bitcoin’s security to thrive.
We also get into Jesse’s personal Bitcoin journey, from his early days watching ads for tiny Bitcoin rewards to dealing with banking scams and shady overdraft fees in a call center job. Those experiences led him to Bitcoin, but it wasn’t until he hit insane on-chain fees in 2017 that he really saw the need for Lightning.
From there, we break down the challenges of Lightning payments, why large transactions still fail, and how Amboss is helping make the network more efficient. Jesse explains how merchants can lease liquidity instead of paying Visa’s 3% fees, and how Lightning node operators can earn yield on their Bitcoin, without counterparty risk.
We also touch on the future of Bitcoin payments, regulatory challenges, and what’s happening in El Salvador. If you’ve ever wondered how Lightning works behind the scenes and where it’s headed, this episode is for you.

Camilo Menéndez - Celebrated Host of Bitcoin Meet-ups at El Zonte's Sustainable Hotel Palo Verde
30 Jun 2023
00:54:28
"It started like a dream ... and now it's a dream come true". How did Palo Verde come to be the favorite beach front boutique hotel location for countless Bitcoin meet-ups? Camilo Menéndez understood that the way to improve the condition of his country was to give back in three ways, economical, social and environmental. Camilo Menéndez knew Palo Verde had to be sustainable. He explains to Mike Peterson that there were hard times. Building a high end hotel during high murder rates and running a hotel during the lockdowns seemed crazy. But then... BITCOIN. It was a game changer. Palo Verde embraced Bitcoin. The demographic of visitors changed dramatically. The number of visitors sky-rocketed. Camilo Menéndez says he is training local staff from scratch and is committed to educational goals for the community.
Watch to the end for the long list of the sustainable actions the hotel is taking, incredible.
Yet another evolving success story.

How Bitcoin Saved This Man from Political Persecution and Financial Ruin | Enrique Ho
15 Feb 2025
01:09:48
Live from Bitcoin Beach in El Zonte, El Salvador, in this episode, I sit down with Enrique Ho, a former traditional finance executive turned full-blown Bitcoin advocate. Enrique’s story is wild. One day, he was living the high life as a private equity guy in Panama. The next, he was on the run, hit with an Interpol Red Notice, accused of crimes he didn’t commit, and forced into exile. But here’s where it gets interesting, Bitcoin saved him.
With his assets at risk of being frozen, Enrique remembered something his wife had told him years before: Bitcoin can’t be confiscated. So, he moved his savings into BTC, not as an investment, but as financial insurance. That decision changed everything. He went down the rabbit hole, realized what Bitcoin really means, and is now dedicating his life to helping others gain financial sovereignty, especially in places where governments can seize everything overnight.
We talk about how Panama missed its chance with Bitcoin while El Salvador is making all the right moves. Enrique shares his firsthand experience with the dangers of government-controlled money, something people are waking up to even in the US. He explains why he’s now working with Blink (formerly Bitcoin Beach Wallet) to push Bitcoin adoption and how Latin America and Africa are about to see a massive wave of financial transformation. This one’s packed with insight, real-world lessons, and a powerful story about why Bitcoin matters beyond just number go up. Don’t miss it!
