It Only Takes One: Jess Laughter's Giant Mule Deer Story | Big Hunt Guys, Ep. 24401 Oct 202601:32:54

Jess Laughter is back, and she brought a great hunt story with her. After drawing a tag in a state where she'd never hunted deer, Jess did everything she could to prepare.

Once the hunt started, the water she'd found while scouting was gone, two big bucks sort of gave her the slip, and she passed a lot of good deer while trying to find one of her target bucks. By day five, she was low on food and second-guessing everything. Finally, after pushing hard day after day and trusting her gut, it happened. Jess walks us through dry-firing on him, losing sight of the buck for an hour, and finally closing the deal at 180 yards on a crazy-cool buck, which is now her biggest buck ever. It only takes one.

Big Buck Stories: Archery Success And A True Giant | Big Hunt Guys, Ep. 24326 Sep 202601:20:55

Austin Folkman from our GOHUNT Insider+ team is back on the podcast! We talk big-buck stories to giant-buck stories, and much more. Brady kicks things off with a quick look at how Insider+ is helping members fill tags across the West, and why now is the time to start your 2027 plan with updated Draw Odds already live for a bunch of states.

Then it's mule deer talk. Austin grabbed a leftover archery tag days before the opener... after plenty of years without bowhunting, a scramble to find his bow, and just three arrows that didn't even match. Four stalks over nine days of weekend-warrior hunting to close the deal, including five straight hours spent sitting in range, waiting for the buck to stand, and it ended with one of his best bucks ever.

We wrap up with the story of a 216" velvet giant that Austin helped his best friend's dad take on a draw tag, and I share a few details (more to come) from my own recent muzzleloader deer hunt.

Leica Geovid Max: Is This What Other Rangefinding Binos Aspire To Be? | Miller Tines, Ep. 2117 Sep 202601:04:36

I've had the Leica Geovid Max binoculars in hand for a while now at the range, scouting, and an upcoming hunt with them, and I gotta say, throwing all bias aside, even though we sell a ton of optics here at GOHUNT... Leica knocked it out of the park with the new Geovid Max.

On this episode, I sit down with Hamilton Boykin, Leica's Product and Training Manager, to go deep in the weeds on what makes this rangefinding binocular special. The Geovid Max means max everything: max range, max optical clarity, max speed. We discuss Leica's customizable heads-up display and how you can add as much data as you'd ever want, or clean it up and just see the essentials, depending on how you want the optic to work for you. The Geovid Max is rated to 8,200 yards on reflective targets, 4,600 yards on rock faces and trees, and 2,900 yards on deer-sized targets.

Hamilton's been with Leica for 18 years and clearly lives this stuff, and I'd say he truly loves optics, just like me.

Stabilized Binos Just Got Better: SIG SAUER's New ZULU6 HDX PRO 42mm | Big Hunt Guys, Ep. 24103 Sep 202601:35:53

Brady is joined by Troy Hellman and Anthony Cuomo from SIG SAUER, and this time they're bringing big news: the brand-new ZULU6 HDX PRO 42mm line is officially here! We break down the four new models (12x42, 14x42, 16x42, and 20x42) and dig into what sets this Gen 4 platform apart from the rest of the ZULU6 lineup and how it compares to the 50mm version of the HDX Pro.

We talk through the two different stabilization modes: OmniScan and the new OmniLock mode, which is a huge upgrade. The bump in the field of view. Troy and Anthony also get into the age-old debate of which magnification to use for bowhunting elk, high-country mule deer, and everything in between, and why once you go stabilized, it's almost impossible to go back to traditional binoculars.

Whether you're already running a pair of Zulus or you're still glassing off a tripod, wondering if it's worth the switch. The beauty of this new lineup is that there's finally a stabilized option that fits almost every price point and hunting style.

The ZULU6 HDX PRO 42mm binoculars are available now at the GOHUNT Gear Shop: https://shop.gohunt.com/collections/sig-sauer

Chasing Two Pointers: A Successful Weekend Of Antelope Hunts | Miller Tines, EP. 2001 Sep 202601:44:53

Lane and I are back from a recent opening weekend of antelope hunting with two bucks on the table (and the smell to prove it). This one's a full antelope hunt recap: the good, the frustrating, and the "how did that actually happen?" The guys talk about their hunt, what they learned, and how much they both love antelope hunting. A weekend full of memories, a bunch of meat, and both took their biggest antelope ever. Along the way, we discuss judging antelope on the fly, why patience can beat aggressive tactics when you've got a good tag, and Brady's story about how not to cook antelope heart.

Essential Glassing Tips For Mule Deer — Mental Game, Optics & Tactics | Miller Tines Podcast, Ep. 1917 Aug 202600:58:49

Everyone knows I love to glass. There is a beauty in sitting on a mountain and picking apart every inch of terrain until something clicks. But in my opinion, the most overlooked part of glassing isn't your optics; it's your mind. In this solo episode, I crack the puzzle of why so many hunters glass "casually" and walk away saying there are no deer, when the real issue is they never gave their brain the chance to actually see.

In this episode, I cover:

- The mental side of glassing: why your brain can't run two attention-demanding tasks at once, and why listening to music/podcasts while glassing is quietly costing you deer.
- The Invisible Gorilla experiment: the classic inattentional blindness study, that's a near-perfect analogy for what happens behind the glass
- My full optics setup: spotting scope, stabilized binos, rangefinder, and how I run my tripod and panning head system for long glassing sits.
- Stop glassing for "bucks": why searching for the whole body of a deer sets you up to fail, and what small details (ear twitch, antler tine flicker, horizontal lines, color contrast) actually pop first.
- Why there's no "ideal" glassing spot: how to stop chasing the perfect vantage point and start using imperfect terrain to your advantage.

Shot Selection Is a Skill | The Game Trail Ep. 6314 Aug 202600:40:43

In this episode of the Game Trail, Trail breaks down one of the most important parts of bowhunting: knowing when not to shoot. Trail talks through the shots he's comfortable taking on mule deer and elk, the shot angles and situations he will pass on, and how he determines effective range with a bow. Trail also gets into the mental side of it—because knowing your limits on the range is easy. Knowing them when a big animal is standing in front of you is a completely different challenge. Trail wraps up talking about why self-control is one of the most important skills an archery hunter can develop. Your maximum range isn't the distance you can hit a target. It's the distance at which you can consistently make the right shot, under real hunting conditions, on an animal you owe a clean kill.

How To Judge Giants In The Field | Big Hunt Guys, Ep. 23813 Aug 202601:48:50

Heads up: technical issues meant we lost our mic audio for this one, so please excuse the sound quality — we'll have it back to normal next episode!

How much does score really matter? In this episode of the Big Hunt Guys Podcast, Trail, Brady, and Lorenzo tackle one of hunting's most debated topics—scoring antlers. The guys discuss whether giving animals names helps or hurts hunters, the social pressures surrounding hunting, and why score has become such a dominant part of modern hunting conversations. Then they dive deep into the art of field judging mule deer, elk and antelope, breaking down the body characteristics, antler features, and mental shortcuts they use to estimate score before making a move. Whether you're trying to judge a mature buck from a mile away or decide if a bull is worth chasing, this episode is packed with practical field judging tips and honest discussion about where score fits into hunting.

The Ultimate Backcountry Cook System For Hunters w/Chris Neville | Miller Tines, Ep. 1831 Jul 202601:27:45

Chris Neville co-founded Roughridge Stove Company with his brother Josh after four years of obsessive R&D to build the backcountry cook system for hunters they always wished existed. Chris is obviously a really good friend of mine, and I wanted to do a deep dive on the High Country Cook System piece by piece — the patented irregular octagon-shaped titanium pot, removable windguard, the fully enclosed igniter, the built-in fuel regulator, and why boil time is the wrong metric for judging a stove.

They also get into the story behind launching a hunting gear company (with two newborns arriving two weeks before launch day), and what hunt Chris is looking forward to this year.

Finding a target buck is only the beginning. In this episode, Brady, Trail, and Lorenzo break down what happens after you've located your target deer during the preseason. They cover how to determine bedding areas, feeding patterns, travel routes, and observation points without educating the buck. The guys also discuss wind, access, hunting pressure, how often to scout, when to back out, and how to build a plan that gives you the highest odds when opening day arrives. If you've ever found a buck in July or August but struggled to turn that into a successful hunt, this episode offers ideas to help you finish the job.

Building the "Easy Button" Hunting Rifle w/ Andrew Whitney of Tenacity | Miller Tines, Ep. 1710 Jul 202601:18:21

In this episode, I sit down with Andrew Whitney of Tenacity Firearms to dig into everything that goes into building a custom rifle... without the custom rifle price tag or extremely long wait times. We dive into why a custom Tenacity is cheaper than some line production rifles. How I've been using a Tenacity for almost a year now, including taking my mountain goat last fall. If you just drew a mule deer or elk tag, or you're looking to upgrade your rifle, this is a great discussion of what goes into a custom rifle and why you don't get that from a production rifle. Plus, we dive into the components of their rifles, which are ones I'd use anyway if I was going to build my own custom rifle. I love precision rifles, and this podcast was a fun one!

Your Mule Deer E-Scouting Q&A | Drew a Tag, Now What? (Part 2) | Miller Tines, Ep. 1629 Jun 202601:49:25

This is Part 2 of the "Drew a Tag, Now What?" series, and it's a full listener Q&A on one of my favorite ways to prepare for a hunt: e-scouting. A few weeks ago we asked for your e-scouting questions over on the GOHUNT Instagram, and you guys sent in some absolutely phenomenal ones. So in this episode I'm tackling nearly every single one. In my opinion, e-scouting is one of the most important tools we have as hunters because you can do it 24/7, 365. But it can also be overwhelming… so I try to break it all down into a process you can repeat.

I dive into: what actually makes a spot bucky (cover, security, feed, shade, glassing), which slopes I key on, identifying mule deer feed in satellite imagery, my waypoint color-coding system, e-scouting the thick PJ desert, finding water off the map, high alpine archery, third rifle transition range, October bucks, breaking down a big general state like Montana, and how to dumb it all down if you're brand new. I discuss elevation bands, road density, winter range and migration layers, terrain analysis, and historical imagery, so you can hear how I layer that data analysis into a real game plan. It's not about finding one magic waypoint. It's about layering the data, letting those layers converge, and building a plan you trust enough to act on. Put your reps in now, and come season you'll be hunting with confidence instead of guessing.

Summer Mule Deer Strategy: Habitat, Patterns, and Big Buck Data | The Game Trail Ep. 6024 Jun 202600:58:38

In this solo episode, Trail breaks down his complete approach to summer mule deer scouting. He explains where mature bucks spend their summers, the habitat features he prioritizes, and the key reasons certain areas consistently hold older-age-class deer. Trail also shares the exact notes he records on every buck he scouts—from antler characteristics, travel patterns, bedding locations, behavior, and vulnerability factors. These scouting details help build a reliable profile on each deer long before opening day. Trail also offers up the stats behind the best mule deer bucks he's harvested. He analyzes the elevation, slope, aspect and vegetation type for each buck. Whether you're trying to locate your first mature buck or refine your scouting system for bigger deer, this episode is packed with practical ideas and real-world lessons from chasing mule deer in the West.

Grit, Gear & Mule Deer: A Conversation w/ Jess Laughter | Big Hunt Guys, Ep. 23224 Jun 202601:52:22

In this episode of The Big Hunt Guys Podcast, Brady and Trail sit down with a friend of GOHUNT, Jess Laughter, to talk all things backcountry hunting. Jess shares her approach to archery, including how she selects a bow, dials in her setup, and prepares for hunting season. Jess also recounts her memorable archery mule deer hunt from last season, walking us through the scouting, challenges, key decisions, and the emotions of the hunt from start to finish. Whether you're new to hunting or a seasoned backcountry hunter looking to refine your setup, this episode is packed with practical insights, hunting stories, and lessons learned.

You Drew a Tag… Now What? | The Exact Post-Draw Game Plan (Part 1) | Miller Tines, Ep. 1515 Jun 202600:53:13

You drew the tag. The rush hits, you call your buddies, and then reality sets in. Now what? In this solo episode, I'm walking you through the exact prep sequence I try to use the second a tag lands in my hand. While some of these might seem very basic, the work happens between the draw results day and the season opener. Because in my opinion, that window right there is what separates a good hunt from a truly memorable one. Drawing the tag isn't the finish line. It's step one. Note: I left e-scouting OUT of this one on purpose. This episode is the foundation: knowing your tag, researching your unit, leaning on the community, understanding the biology, and getting your body and gear ready. The mapping deep dive deserves its own episode, and that's exactly what's coming next. Get this groundwork right, and your e-scouting and boots-on-the-ground scouting will actually pay off.

Check out an article on this process here that can be applied to any state/tag you drew: https://www.gohunt.com/browse/tips-and-tricks/insider/if-you-drew-a-deer-or-elk-tag-in-colorado-start-here-to-prepare-for-your-hunt

The Most Elusive Deer I've Ever Hunted - Sambar in Australia w/ James Bath | Miller Tines, Ep. 1406 Jun 202601:07:11

In this episode, I'm on location deep in the Australian high country with James Bath, chasing Sambar deer. These deer might be the most elusive critters I've ever laid eyes on. We dive into why James is so addicted to hunting Sambar, how everything's literally upside down down there (south-facing slopes you hunt, the sun, even the stars), and the way these deer just melt into the bush and disappear right in front of you. We talk bush stalking and "walking them up," listening more than you're looking, velvet vs. polished-out stags, "casties," and just how dense and heavy that Sambar antler really is. Then there's the gear talk. Big cartridges, big bullets, and zero apologies for recoil… my kind of people, and why "it works, why change it" is a perfectly good answer. Plus, James tells one of the wildest snake stories I've heard, we cover some big land-access wins happening over there, the Aussie critters that blew my mind (kangaroos, wombats, and "monkey birds"), and why we'd both rather be sweating up a mountain than anywhere else in the world. In my opinion, this is what hunting's all about: the people you meet and the places it takes you.

Trail's Take: Broadheads, Vanes & Ballistics | The Game Trail Ep.5806 Jun 202601:04:14

In this episode, Trail dives into the findings from the 2026 Arrow Ballistics Study, one of the most comprehensive independent analyses of arrow performance to date. The study evaluated broadheads and vane configurations across aerodynamic drag, steering ability, accuracy, and flight noise using controlled testing and open-source data. The discussion explores why no single broadhead or vane dominates every category and how hunters can choose a setup based on their own priorities rather than marketing claims. Whether you're tuning a new hunting arrow, comparing fixed-blade broadheads, or wondering if changing vane configurations will improve broadhead flight, this episode delivers Trail's takeaways from the latest ballistics data and explains what matters most when building a dependable hunting setup.

Tenet - The Suppressor Company That Might Change Everything | Miller Tines, Ep. 1315 May 202600:45:02

I'll be honest: I've been a very slow adopter of using a suppressor on my hunting rifles. But we currently live in a fantastic time for new suppressor technology! And if you can win me over with a suppressor system that doesn't compromise the benefits I see when hunting with a brake in a big magnum, I'm in! This is a great conversation with Jacob Albaugh of Tenet, a brand-new suppressor company that spent five years quietly building — and rebuilding — their product before ever talking to a single customer. No compromise was their agreement from day one: light, short, quiet, and maximum recoil reduction. All four or nothing. 87 iterations, and seven patent-pending technologies later... they're finally ready. We discuss how Tenet engineered a system in what they call unrivaled shot control. The discussion also touches on a recent suppressor test by Joseph Ewing, in which he and a crew tested a plethora of suppressors, and the results should be publicly available very soon.

Pre-orders for Tenet are going live on May 22 at www.tenet.inc — shipping June 1.

Travis Nowotny is one of the most lethal mountain hunters I know. In this episode, we sat down to talk bears, and it turned into one of those conversations I just didn’t want to end. Travis breaks down his entire approach to spring black bear hunting — from reading the green-up to picking the right terrain, hunting pressure-free country, and how early-season warmth like we’re seeing this year completely changes where bears will be. We dig into bow vs. rifle tactics, why backpacking into bear country makes sense, and the one terrain feature he always keys on. We also get into e-scouting strategies for out-of-state tags, building hunting circles with guys who actually want to help each other, and why your hunting approach has to evolve as life gets busier. Travis opens up about balancing running Goat Knives, electrical work, family, and still finding a way to put himself on animals year after year — and honestly, the perspective he brings on why we hunt is something I greatly respect.
