Transcript David Doty (00:01.07) My name is David and the Chronological Bible reading for September 26th is Nehemiah chapters 1 through 5. Yesterday we read in Ezra chapter 7 that he and his entourage came to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes. Nehemiah is in the twentieth year, so there's a 13 year gap between these two men.
David Doty (00:35.394) Nehemiah is serving as cup bearer to the king.
David Doty (00:42.422) and receives an update from someone who is just traveling back from Jerusalem. The update is not good in verse three. The Jews in Jerusalem are not doing well. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall has been broken down and the gates burned. When Nehemiah heard this,
David Doty (01:09.932) When Nehemiah heard this, he did exactly what all of us would do when we are faced with news that disappoints and disheartens and leaves our souls unsettled.
He sat down.
David Doty (02:01.112) He sat down and wept and mourned for a number of days with fasting and prayer.
before the God of the heavens. He humbled himself and confessed the sins of his people in the same way that Ezra did and Daniel had before him. He began praying the scriptures as recorded in verse nine, God, you said, if you return to me and carefully observe my commands,
Even though your exiles were banished, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place where I chose to have my name dwell." He closes his prayer by asking God for success and asking for compassion in the presence of the King.
David Doty (02:56.846) Persian law allowed for the king to execute anyone who offended him in any way. So it was dangerous to say the least for someone to go to the king's throne room uninvited and show any kind of negative emotion.
God answers Nehemiah's prayer and when the king asks him why he's sad, his response is, why shouldn't I be sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins?

In Ezekiel chapters 44 and 45, Ezekiel continues his tour of the temple grounds that has yet to be built physically. Yahweh instructs Ezekiel that the outer gate facing east is to remain closed and only Yahweh and the prince (or leader) are allowed to use it. The prince will have a meal before Yahweh at that gate. The chapters emphasize the importance of holiness and the distinction between the holy and the common. God calls out the detestable practices of bringing foreigners into the sanctuary without prepared hearts. The chapters also address the role of priests in teaching the people the difference between the holy and the common. After a thousand years of peace, there will be an uprising led by Gog and Magog, but they will be consumed by fire from heaven. This battle will demonstrate God's power and put an end to all arguments about his goodness and authority.
