| Is Peerspace Going to Get Too Expensive? | 22 mai 2025 | 00:15:19 | |
Peerspace is a brokerage site used for short-term rentals for photo shoots, video productions, events, podcasts, meetings and the like. Historically, Peerspace made their revenue by taking a percentage off of every single booking done through their website. However, recently Peerspace has instituted a bidding system which allows location managers to pay to have their spaces ranked higher in the site's search algorithm. What will this do for renters? What will this do for location managers? Short answer; things are likely to get more expensive for everyone. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Biggest Marketing Mistake Photographers Make | 14 mai 2025 | 00:10:27 | |
There is one mistake that I've seen photographers, videographers and creatives make over the course of my 20+ year career. This mistake is often what separate photographers who build sustainable and thriving businesses versus those who continue to have peaks and valleys and often find themselves struggling to bring in new business. For those in Arizona - we are hosting a photo marketing roundtable on May 22nd at The Hive Studios in Phoeninx, Arizona. RSVP at https://www.hivestudiosaz.com/workshops/p/photo-roundtable-2025
| Why Photographers are Toxic | 06 mai 2025 | 00:06:48 | |
Let's face it - if you expand the timeline long enough - you're going to find there is quite a fair amount of toxicity within the photography community. From jealousy to envy to downright aggressive competition - no one is immune from it. So let's break down the actual sources behind the toxic traits of so many creatives and how we can navigate it better as a community. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Biggest Mistakes Photographers Make in Lighting Subjects | 30 avr. 2025 | 00:11:46 | |
I want to be clear, right off the top, that I have personally made every single one of these mistakes myself in my 20+ year career. The goal is not to shame photograpehrs for making the mistakes that all of us have made - but to shed light (that is a well-placed pun) on these misconcepts, misunderstandings and mistakes so that we can continue to learn and improve on our craft as creative professionals. https://jamespatrick.com/
| You Bid Too Low, Now What? | 23 avr. 2025 | 00:09:05 | |
You were asked by a client to bid on a project and either intentionally or unintentionally they did not give you all of the information you need to accurate prepare an estimate that fully reflects your services and value. Bluntly - you underbid. So what do you do? In this episode of the Beyond the Image podcast, host James Patrick deconstructs how to prevent this scenario from happening to begin with as well as suggestions on how to navigate it with clients should the situation arise. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Stop Chasing THESE TYPES of Clients | 16 avr. 2025 | 00:07:18 | |
Photographers - there are two types of clients we need to STOP chasing.
Instead - let's focus on how we find clients who do have the purchasing power and purchasing assets to support our creative endeavors. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Why Your Social Media Sucks | 08 avr. 2025 | 00:14:38 | |
Social media was never particularly easy - but it sure was a lot simpler. The way to achieve engagement has completely shifted (and we've lost count how many times that has happened). In this episode of the Beyond the Image podcast - we dive into what needs to happen on your social channels now based upon how audiences are consuming content. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Make Better Photo Bids & Proposals | 01 avr. 2025 | 00:09:39 | |
If all you are sending a prospective client is an estimate sheet - then you are drastically under-selling yourself as a creative. In this episode of the Beyond the Image podcast - I dive into my strategy for crafting and desgining well curated proposals that I send to clients when bidding. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Should Photographers Niche? | 28 mars 2025 | 00:07:10 | |
In today's episode we answer the question "should photographers niche?" YUP! Yup they absolutely should! In this episode of Beyond the Image, host James Patrick dives into why photographers should carve out their specialty and unique selling proposition as well as unpacking the biggest fear they have when it comes to niching down. If I niche down, then I won't get hired for other work again! The reality is - that simply is not true! https://jamespatrick.com/
| Should Photographers Also Do Video? | 20 mars 2025 | 00:09:15 | |
In this episode we answer the question; should photographers also provide video services to clients? Overwhelmingly yes! Without question. Either they need to learn how to construct and deliver video files - or it is important for them to form a partnership with a videographer to offer their services to clients. Client demand for video assets has only been increasing exponentially. In order for a creative professional to stay competitive - they have to find ways to meet client demands and expectations in today's marketplace. https://jamespatrick.com/
| I Got Hired With ZERO Experience | 13 mars 2025 | 00:10:42 | |
I've been hired to do a handful of gigs over the last three decades with zero experience. Everything from selling wedding rings to modeling for an off campus student housing complex. But what is even more intense is the fact that I built a photography career over 20 decades having no prior experience. That I built a podcast from the ground up never having spoken into a microphone before. That I created not one, but two, best selling books having never published a book prior. This is not to say that mistakes were not made or that I did not often fail (I did, a lot). But I never allowed a lack of experience prevent me from trying something. And neither should you. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Independent Publishers Taking a Dump | 04 mars 2025 | 00:07:46 | |
As traditional print media scrambles to find firm ground despite crumbling atrophy - the thing I was still so excited about and hopeful for as a creative was the rapid emergence of unique, fresh, bold and innovative independent publishers. Sure, independent publishers have smaller budgets (if any) and the audiences are certainly a bit more finite. But also, there is far less overhead, the audiences are hyper focused and there is more bandwidth for creative exploration. Unfortunately… the same greed, which has been eradicating traditional publishers is now infecting independent publishers.
Yet these publishers are charging premium sponsored rates for features on the cover and inside their magazines. If sponsored content is your business model, and I’m not going to argue in favor or against that, you absolutely need to do better for your advertisers, editorial contributors, as well as potential readers. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Photoshop Controversies | 27 févr. 2025 | 00:17:02 | |
In more than 20 years as a photographer, I've had a few photoshop controversies. There have been times my work was accused of being over-edited (it wasn't) and there were times I even got fired because I refused to edit work beyond what I was comfortable with. The reality is that it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is art. The abundance of photo editing apps, filters and AI-enhanced manipulations has only added to the confusion of authenticity. The result is to simply label everything as fake, inauthentic and misleading. But let's unpack the nuance of photo editing and what can constitute as acceptable manipulation versus what goes too far. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Learning to Use Gels in Photography | 13 févr. 2025 | 00:12:43 | |
I honestly thought that just by owning a pack of color gels that my photography career would immediately be transformed and I would instantly be more creative, professional and respected. Spoiler alert - all I learned at first was that I didn't know squat about how to use gels effectively. In this episode I talk about the steps I personally took to actually learn how to use gels from lighting backgrounds to creating atmosphere to accenting a subject to actually working as the key light and beyond. Next week I am going to be hosting a live workshop at The Hive Studios showing you how to leverage gels in your creative portraits. As a creative, dealing with difficult clients is inevitable. From unrealistic Photoshop demands to impossible shoot conditions, I've seen it all. But sometimes, the problem isn't the client—it’s us. In this new conversation - we dive into a behind the scenes look at the entire production of the latest issue of the magazine, The Top 100 Dishes of Arizona, which I was grateful enough to photograph the cover. | I won't sign a contract unless this is included | 22 janv. 2025 | 00:12:16
I've been looking over my contracts that I send out to clients prior to a commercial campaign and have honed in on two specfic areas that are non-negotiables for me as a professional photographer. In 20+ years of business, these two sections are vital to reduce client confusion, add clarity to project deliverables and eliminate lost revenue of work we would have done without additional pay. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Best Photo Lighting Equipment for Location Shoots | 15 janv. 2025 | 00:16:31 | |
I get asked (a lot) about my recommendations for lighting equipment. For most of my career, my answer has always been "just buy whatever you can afford." And more than two decades into my career, my stance on that has not changed. Get what you can afford and you will find ways to make it work. Also, gear does not make the photographer nor improve the shot if not used correctly. That being said - I recently have found myself only using a few pieces of gear every single time I shoot on location. In fact, I am using these pieces so often and enjoying them so much that I've actually started to recommend them to photographers building their lighting kits for the first time. If I had to re-do my entire lighting kit, these are the pieces I would buy first. https://jamespatrick.com/

| Rejected or Accepted? Results of 100 Publisher Pitches | 01 janv. 2025 | 00:07:20 | |
I had, what I believed to be, a good idea for a new book. Unlike my first three books which I self published and self produced (two of which became best sellers), for this book concept I wanted to go the traditional publisher route. So I crafted a full length proposal and sample manuscript that detailed out the focus of the book, why it was unique and relevant in the marketplace as well as a multi-faceted marketing plan for the launch of the book to ensure its success. I then took that proposal and I sent it out more than 100 times. I sent it off to book publishers as well as to a bevy of literary agents. This podcast covers, in detail, the results.
| No BS Approach to Business Development with Vanessa Joy | 18 déc. 2024 | 00:59:50 | |
Business development is likely the most stressful element of a photographer's career. Having to market and sell while navigating the relentless fear of rejection is what separates those who are able to successful grow their careers from those who continue to struggle. Well, let's fix that, shall we? My guest today on the Beyond the Image podcast is Vanessa Joy. She has worked with thousands of photographers not only in mastering their craft, but to actually build a sustainable business. Vanessa is a Canon Explorer of Light and has generated a multi-million dollar photography business working with brands such as BravoTV, Hilton Grand Vacations, Profoto and more. | [FREE GUIDE] Legacy Planner Annual Goal Strategy Guide | 12 déc. 2024 | 00:12:31
The last planner you will ever need! Plan out your year, months, weeks and days with The Legacy Planner to get more done, stay on track and chart out your most successful year ever! Why do some individuals seem to possess the capacity to consistently achieve great things in their lives, while others tend to struggle? Perhaps you have wondered the same thing and questioned what specifically separates the two groups. If we are to believe musings from the infinite parade of social media memes, then each of us are already abundant with endless potential. Yet despite that potential, for some unknown reason, only a small percentage of the population seems to have the right key to unlock it. To add to the confusion, that “key” is often defined as simply being the result of hard work, grit, hustle, persistence, determination, perseverance, or a multitude of other buzzwords that sound really great and empowering—but don’t actually provide a concrete answer. What is it that actually separates the individual who is able to achieve his or her health goals from someone who battles with their health year after year? What distinguishes the efforts of the person who stimulates and grows their mental acuity from someone who regularly suffers from stress and atrophy? What is different about those who foster enriching relationships from others who remain lonely? And what distinguishes someone who achieves their business goals from those who do not? For the past decade, these questions have been central in author James Patrick’s obsession behind deconstructing and comprehending how humans are able to cultivate change, and thereby achieve success within their lives. His goal was to decipher the exact methodology of achievement, systemize it, and make that approach accessible so others could put it into action. Through his editorial research, the writing of his best-selling book Fit Business Guide: The Workout Plan for Your Brand, and the hundreds of interviews he conducted for the podcast Beyond the Image, James discovered the elements that are responsible for crafting change, and devised how to reserve engineer them so they can be applied to anything we wish to achieve. After all, success leaves clues. What those clues have shown is that creating the change you seek and turning the impossible to possible comes down to three essential pillars: Vision. Purpose. Legacy. The Legacy Planner is how you can apply all three to your own life to ignite the change, growth, and success you’ve always imagined. | I Got Scammed | 04 déc. 2024 | 00:18:34
Early in my career I got scammed by a client who hired me to photograph an event for his company, and then never paid me. His company eventually disappeared and two decades passed until I came across him again. He had relocated, launched a new company and was on the cover of a pay to be featured magazine. What happened next with the magazine was really interesting. [NEWS] The Legacy Planner is newly updated for 2025! Get your copy now at https://jamespatrick.com/legacy/
| Your Watermarks Suck | 21 nov. 2024 | 00:07:59 | |
The last time I dared talk about photographers using watermarks, I got a few (okay, a lot) of angry messages. But I hope this time you hear me out on why watermarking your photos is a futile effort that only satiates ego and does nothing to actually help your brand or business. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Getting Fired by Clients | 14 nov. 2024 | 00:23:47 | |
By default we only want to share our wins and successes. The fear is that if we are open and honest about projects that don't go well or client experiences that are not stellar that it will somehow reflect negatively upon us. The truth is, when we only share the positives about our careers, it gives a false aspiration of what a creative career truly looks like. Throughout our careers we will lose more work than we will ever win. That is the simple math of it. And once we acknowledge that reality - we can begin to look at losses as not failures but as opportunities to learn and improve our services to the right clients. https://jamespatrick.com/
| Photographers Give Terrible Advice | 07 nov. 2024 | 00:17:07 | |
When I am in the mood to torture myself, I hop over to Photography Facebook Groups and read the comment sections whenever a photographer asked for help, support or advice. The inevitable result is a barrage of awful keyboard critics giving the worst advice pretending they are being altruistic and supportive - but in reality just trying to keep others out of the industry they believe they are at the center of. In this episode I discuss what happened when a photographer made the mistake of asking for help. https://jamespatrick.com/

| Competition in Photography | 16 oct. 2024 | 00:08:41 | |

When should photographers work for free? If you've followed me for anything length of time, you've seen the numerous videos and posts I've done about cheap clients trying to take advantage of photographers. You would, no doubt, asssume I would be diligent about saying that no photographer or creative should ever work for free. But that is not what I feel at all. | Creating Your Style as a Photographer | 30 sept. 2024 | 00:13:58
When we think about creating our style as a photographer (or any creative professional) what we intially think is that we have to niche down who our core market is and the type of work we will be focusing on. And we are not wrong to think that. But surprisingly, there is actually a tremendous amount more we can do to define our style as a creative. In this episode of the Beyond the Image podcast, host James Patrick discusses a myriad of ways that photographers, videographers and fellow creatives can begin the process of defining and carving out their unique style to help them stand out from their competition in the marketplace. “Regardless of how bad someone thinks they are on camera, it’s our job as photographers to make something great. And if not great, to make something usable.”

| WWE VP of Photography Brad Smith | 14 août 2024 | 01:14:58 | |
Welcome to the relaunch of the Beyond the Image Podcast! A show for creatives, made by a creative. If you’ve listened to this show over the last few years, you’ll realize it’s rare I bring a guest back on a second time. This is a mistake I want to rectify. I went back to our episode from March 5, 2019 with one of the first guests I had on. I heard this individual speaking on a webinar series on how creative professionals can navigate their career and try to procure work from bigger and better clients so they can scale their business and I knew I needed to have him on the podcast so I can pick his brain. In his career he has been the Director of Photography at Sports Illustrated, a Senior Photo Editor for the New York Times, and the Associate Director of Photography for the White House. Currently, he is the VP of Photography for the WWE and I could not think of anyone better to bring back as a guest for the 600th episode of this show. Welcome, Brad Smith, back to the show. “The key thing to remember is, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.” IN THIS EPISODE

The thing that kept coming up over the course of this 3 hour conversation is that so many creatives are still struggling with ways to develop new business for their companies.
Let’s talk about it.
