Catch Me If You Can08 Nov 202101:41:12

Surprisingly the only Spielberg/DiCaprio collaboration to date, Catch Me If You Can is based on the true-ish story of FBI fraud specialist Frank Abagnale, who spent years evading the FBI while running up millions of dollars in fake cheques.

On this weeks podcast, we discuss Leo's interesting post-Titanic career choices, Tom Hanks playing against type, an early showcase for Amy Adams and much more, plus drinking games and sequel pitches!

The Favourite 2: Blood Feud19 Feb 202001:09:10

With all due respect to Glenn Close, Olivia Colman's surprise Best Actress win was one of the clear highlights of last year's Oscars. So, as the dust settles on this year's ceremony, we decided to revisit the film that made it all possible - Yorgos Lanthimos' delightfully odd historical romp The Favourite.

Tune in for our thoughts on tantrums, tiaras, towering wigs and much more as we pitch sequel ideas fit for a queen.

Big (1988)01 Nov 202101:34:22

For a film with such an inherently creepy premise, Penny Marshall's Big is surprisingly charming, thanks in no small part to Tom Hanks' incredible performance - which almost went to a very different sort of actor.

In this week's podcast we discuss relationship red flags, the casting choices that might have been, iconic 80s outfits and much more, plus sequel ideas, drinking games and listener submissions!

Christmas With The Kranks 2: Ripping off The Kranks 27 Dec 201900:59:22

For our final festive selection of 2019, our Patreon supporters have inflicted a real turkey on us. Released in 2004, Christmas With The Kranks is a dire yuletide comedy in which wealthy boomers Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis battle an insane horde of Santa obsessives while attempting to skip out on the Holiday season for a year. If that sounds like a fun premise, trust us, we're over-selling it...

Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on feline cruelty, out-of-place cancer sub-plots and a level of unexamined privilige and flagrant over-spending that makes The Holiday look like a Ken Loach movie...

As always, we've also got drinking games, listener submissions and our own sequel ideas to give this cinematic lump of coal some kind of redemptive quality. The perfect antidote to Festive fatigue!

The Nightmare Before Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Easter...12 Dec 201900:59:44

What's this? What's this?!

Why, it's the latest festive episode of Beyond The Box Set, in which we're pitching sequels for Disney's ghoulish stop-motion classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. Released in 1993, the movie tells the story of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween-town who becomes disillusioned with his annual duties and decides to take a crack at Christmas instead.

Tune into this episode to hear our thoughts on the twisted mind of Tim Burton, the joy of terrorising small children, the disturbing implications of Thanksgiving-town, plus drinking games, listener submissions and much more...

The Holiday 2: Daddy Issues06 Dec 201900:59:41

Like a warm plate of Christmas Fettuccine, The Holiday may not be the most nutritious festive treat on the market, but damn if it doesn't hit the spot, despite our best efforts at maintaining our cynicism...

Starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black, Nancy Meyers' Atlantic-straddling hit exists in that strange Rom-Com fantasy world where money is no object, every house is either a beautifully isolated British cottage or a lavish L.A. mansion decorated with actual chandeliers and flying across the world at the drop of a hat requires no forward planning or adjustment of work/social schedules.

In other words, it should be completely insufferable, but by some Christmas miracle we both found ourselves irresistibly drawn in. Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on dodgy British geography, the eerie physical perfection of Jude Law, knitwear porn and much more.

In a strange quirk of podcast timing, Harry found himself forced to watch three romantic comedies in as many days the week we recorded this episode. Will this have any bearing on his reaction to Bridesmaids, the Oscar-nominated 2011 smash from Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo?

Tune into this week's edition of Beyond The Box Set to hear our thoughts on rom-com fatigue, unsupportive friends, swearing at teenagers, the comedy powerhouse that is Melissa McCarthy and much more, plus drinking games, sequel pitches and all the other regular features. You know the drill.

The Terminal 2: Escape From Krakozhia22 Nov 201901:43:48

Tom Hanks has starred in five movies directed by Steven Spielberg to date. Of those five, The Terminal is arguably the least-loved. Not only did it gross a modest (by Spielberg/Hanks standards) $77 million at the US box office, it is also the only one of their collaborations to secure zero Oscar nominations.

Does this black sheep of their creative partnership deserve to languish in relative obscurity, or is it due for some timely re-evaluation? In this week's episode, we decided to find out - with mixed results all round.

Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on unnecessary sub-plots, a tragic waste of Catherine Zeta Jones, a mind-boggling romance with Zoë Saldana and why we feel Spielberg films are often critic-proof. We also pull together some drinking games, share some reactions to this film from our listeners and of course pitch our sequel ideas to bring The Terminal back to the big screen.

Fargo 2: Murder in Minnesota15 Nov 201901:17:46

With winter rapidly drawing in, a chilly thriller set in the frozen climes of the American Midwest seemed like an appropriate choice for this week's episode. Released in 1996, Fargo is one of the Coen Brothers' most beloved movies, and one of the most acclaimed and influential pictures of its time.

On this week's episode, we discuss breaking our only rule - yes, we're aware of the TV show - iconic accent work, Gunderson relationship goals, the endless joy of watching Steve Buscemi take physical and verbal abuse, and much more...

We also brainstorm some Fargo drinking games and pitch some sequel ideas to find out what the survivors of the original film might be up to 25 years later. Is it worth a listen? Yer darn tootin'!

Fight Club 2: Rom Com Collective 08 Nov 201901:30:34

A controversial cult hit with the most famous first rule in cinema history, David Fincher's Fight Club is one of the defining movies of its era. But does this hyper-violent satire of 90s masculinity have more to offer than a memorable twist in the cold light of 2019?

In this week's podcast, we discuss the trouble with Fight Club's very straight, very white, very male point of view, the bullshit philosophies of Tyler Durden, Helena Bonham Carter's fabulous smoking aesthetic and much more, before pitching our drinking games and fantasy sequel concepts...

Let The Right One In: Curse of the Killer Kitties (feat. The Contrarians)01 Nov 201901:49:32

Our Vampire season concludes with a chilly Nordic noir about a young Swedish boy who falls in love with a child vampire. Julio from The Contrarians Podcast joins us to talk Stockholm syndrome, incompetent serial killers, CGI cat attacks and more as we pitch sequels for Let The Right One In.

Released in 2008, Let The Right One In was directed by Tomas Alfredson and adapted from the bestselling novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist. It was also remade for American audiences in 2010 as Let Me In, starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Both versions are very good, but the prospect of forcing Harry to sit through two hours of Swedish was just too tempting. Tune in to find out how he fared...

Vampire's Kiss 2: Uncaged25 Oct 201901:26:17

Nicholas Cage suffers delusions of Vampirism in the insane dark 80s comedy Vampire's Kiss. Now most famous for birthing that meme, the entire movie is a campy, unhinged delight that truly has to be seen to be believed. And yet... we were left feeling that maybe it's actually legitimately good?

Check out our full thoughts on the Cage phenomena, incompetent psychiatrists, hostile work environments and much much more in this week's episode...

Lesbian Vampires Killed Our Careers!18 Oct 201901:21:23

Before James Corden found fame in the USA, he teamed up with his 'Gavin & Stacey' co-star Matthew Horne for Lesbian Vampire Killers, a crude and ill-conceived Shaun of the Dead knock-off that almost buried his career for good.

The film is considered so irredeemably awful that Corden himself has spent the rest of his career publicly apologising for it. But could it really be as bad as its reputation suggests?

Turns out the answer is a fairly definitive yes, because this movie is garbage. In this week's episode, we reluctantly conduct a thorough post-mortem on everything from the nonsensical plot, the robotic acting, the dreadful special effects and the constant flurry of sexist, homophobic and generally laugh-free alleged jokes that pepper the mercifully brief 87 minute running time.

No sequel for this film will or should ever be made, so our challenge this week was to consider any acceptable way that this movie could theoretically be brought back to the big screen. Did we succeed? We'll leave the final judgement up to you...

Bram Stoker's Dracula: Meet The Harkers11 Oct 201901:32:29

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring an A-list 90s cast engaging in some highly variable accent work, Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of the most loyal screen adaptations ever made of the classic horror novel. As our Vampire season continues, we debate how successful the page-to-screen transition really is and attempt to pitch some sacrilegious sequels...

Tune in to hear our thoughts on Keanu Reeves wooden acting, why Gary Oldman is the perfect choice to play the flamboyant prince of darkness, Anthony Hopkins hilariously poor bedside manner as the Vampire hunter Van Helsing, plus drinking games, listener pitches and more...

Election 2: Becoming Tracy Flick27 Sep 201901:00:48

A pointed political satire from Sideways director Alexander Payne, Election gave a young Reese Witherspoon the role of a lifetime as Tracy Flick, a hyper-ambitious young student who invokes the impotent rage of frustrated middle school teacher Matthew Broderick.

Two decades on, the narrative of a highly qualified female politician being judged more for her likability than her qualification feels more relevant than ever. With that in mind, having survived Broderick's attempted sabotage in the original movie, we were interested to discover where Tracy might go next...

Find out in this week's episode, in which we also discuss 90s movie driving, lies in voiceover, why wildcard candidate Tammy might have accidentally predicted Donald Trump and more...

Oliver's Orphanage of Opportunity! 20 Sep 201901:07:40

A spectacular Dickensian musical that traumatised multiple generations of children, Carol Reed's Oliver! is a bona fide classic... but somehow in fifty years, it's never been granted a direct sequel.

Far be it from us to claim we can top Charles Dickens for creativity, but with the great man long dead, we're sure he won't mind us stepping into his shoes for a while. Aussie Nerd Daniel Tickner joins us to share his love of (the first half of) this movie, and to discuss important matters such as the uncomfortable sexiness of Bill Sykes, The Artful Dodger's excellent colour co-ordination and why this movie's title character kind of sucks...

Napoleon Dynamite's High School Reunion12 Sep 201901:14:04

A micro-budget indie comedy with no recognisable stars, Napoleon Dynamite was a surprise crossover smash in 2004. However, it was also highly divisive - and up until now, John has actively avoided watching it. Can Harry and this week's special guest convince him to overcome his prejudices, or will this movie land like a cold slab of steak to the face?

Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on unlikable characters, questionable timelines, inexplicable Llamas and disgusting, disgusting food - plus our usual combination of drinking games, listener reviews and fantasy sequel pitches that attempt to imagine where Napoleon, Kip, Deb, Pedro and Uncle Rico might be today...

Maximum Overdrive 2: Attack of the Drones29 Aug 201901:12:55

Even King himself disowns this film as a cocaine-fuelled disaster these days, but could its audacious blend of gore, comedy and heavy metal be due for re-appraisal? Find out in this week's episode, as we discuss overly specific back-stories, terrible performances by future Simpsons actors, the definition of a road twitch and more...

Misery 2: The College Years23 Aug 201901:14:55

In the annals of all-time great modern horror performances, psychotic fangirl Annie Wilkes would always rank highly. Sadly that dirty bird Stephen King killer her off at the end of Misery, but if this movie taught us anything, it's that with a little light persuasion, any franchise can be subject to a creative revival...

Tune into this week's podcast for our thoughts on Kathy Bates as the proto-internet fangirl, the casting might've beens that could've seriously changed this movie and of course our reaction to that hobbling scene. All that, plus the usual mix of drinking games, listener submissions and some sequel pitches to help bring poor misunderstood Annie back from the grave.

Thinly veiled Jesus allegory? Platonic gay love story? The greatest movie of all time? Depending on who you ask, The Shawshank Redemption could be any and all of the above. One thing everybody can agree on - this adaptation of Stephen King's short story is a very popular film, despite the fact that virtually nobody originally saw it in the cinema.

In this week's podcast we're joined by Harry's brother Sam to discuss the mysterious appeal of Shawshank, Morgan Freeman's iconic narration, the mysterious heteronormative power of IMDB voters and much more, before subjecting this screen classic to the greatest test of all - trial by theoretical sequel!

Stand By Me 2: The Sign08 Aug 201901:08:30

Our Stephen King mini-season kicks off this week with a quintessential coming of age classic, Rob Reiner's heartstring-tugging boys adventure tale Stand By Me.

Adapted from King's short story The Body, Stand By Me stars a lineup of child stars - all of whose lives and careers eerily echoed their fates in the movie. In this week's podcast we discuss misleading titles, traumatic leech incidents, Keifer Sutherland perfecting the peroxide 80s asshole look and much more.

With the surviving actors now in their mid-late forties, is there any mileage in a middle aged Stand By Me sequel? That's the task we set ourselves this week as we pitch concepts to bring this iconic movie back to the big screen. Let's face it, most of these actors would probably be glad of the work...

Welcome To Marwen 2: Beyond The Valley of the Dolls 02 Aug 201901:03:06

A new movie from Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis is generally a buzz-worthy event, but Welcome To Marwen alienated critics and died a swift death at the box office when released earlier this year.

Starring Steve Carrell as a traumatised man living out his fantasies via a meticulously constructed model town populated by kick-ass female soldiers based on his real-world friends and colleagues, Welcome To Marwen is easily one of the oddest movies we've ever discussed on this podcast.

Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on documentary vs Hollywood, some re-castings that might have improved this movie, the very broad accent work of Gwendoline Christie and more.

As always, we also pitch up some good old fashioned drinking games in our efforts to make sense of this movie, and of course we round off with some of our own sequel ideas. Full disclosure - this week was a real challenge!

Chronicle 2: Chronic Back Pain19 Jul 201901:30:59

An inventive blend of superhero action, high school drama and found footage horror, Chronicle is the kind of auspicious debut that should have set director Josh Trank on the road to a glittering career. Then Fantastic Four happened...

Disappointing follow-ups aside, Chronicle remains one of the most refreshing movies we've covered on this podcast in a while, and we'd definitely be open to some kind of sequel. In this week's episode, Lee Agne of the Connected Hearts podcast joins us to discuss hormonal superheroes, alien spunk, why every high school house party takes place in a mansion and more...

The Further Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert12 Jul 201901:34:29

Sharpen your nails and dust off your wittiest one-liners! This week, we're heading off on the road trip of a lifetime with a look back at The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert!

An outrageously camp Australian comedy shot on a minimal budget, TAO Priscilla, Queen of The Desert was an unlikely box office hit back in 1994, even picking up an Academy Award for Costume Design. It also made stars of Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce, while Terrence Howard's turn as world-weary transgendered woman and reluctant drag queen Bernadette must go down as one of the most unlikely comeback performances in Hollywood history.

In this week's podcast, we discuss camp classics, lip sync extravaganzas and some... unfortunate racial stereotyping before pitching some sequel ideas that imagine how Bernadette, Felicia and Mitzi Del Bra might have fared in the modern LGBTQ+ culture. Hold onto your wigs!

Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a difference. Each week, we discuss a classic standalone movie that for whatever reason never received a sequel. Then we compete to pitch our own spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen - with bizarre, baffling and occasionally inspired results!

We've been recommended by numerous sources including The Guardian, Apple Podcast and the Podbean network. If you enjoy our show, please hit subscribe to hear a new episode every Friday morning, and leave us a rating or a review if you'd like to help us to reach the ears of new listeners.

The Day After Tomorrow 2: The Decade After Tomorrow 04 Jul 201901:20:43

Our disaster movie season wouldn't be complete without a look back at Roland Emmerich's The Day After Tomorrow. Will this once-silly climate change thriller now read as a sobering warning from history in the cold light of 2019? Well... not exactly.

Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on sentient ice, Tornadoes voiced by pissed-off failed actors, offensive British stereotypes and much more...

Left Behind 2: Highway To Hell (feat. Chris Scott) 28 Jun 201901:25:09

For the second time this month, our disaster movie season lands on the bizarre latter-day career choices of Nicholas Cage. Based on a bestselling Christian book series, 2014's Left Behind is a low-budget, shoddily made train wreck that not even Jesus could save from box office oblivion.

With the help of our special guest Chris Scott from the Ask Karen podcast, we spend this week's episode discussing important spiritual matters such as Nicholas Cage's alarming headpiece, the suspiciously porn star-sounding character names, dwarf kicking, air hostess slut shaming and much more.

Along the way we also have the usual collection of drinking games - and trust us, you'll need it for this one - listener submissions and of course, sequel pitches! Given that this movie was intended to kickstart a nine-part franchise, theoretically we should have plenty to work with. You'll have to tune in to discover just how that turned out...

Deep Impact 2: Deeper Underground21 Jun 201901:15:01

A more thoughtful, character-driven take on the disaster movie genre that still finds room for exploding cars and city-crushing tidal waves, Deep Impact is easily the most respectable entry into our current mini-season... it even passes the Bechdel test with flying colours!

Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on the awesomely Presidential Morgan Freeman, a badly miscast Tea Leoni and her inexplicably Austrian father, strangely neglectful parenting and Elijah Wood finding a novel way of forcing his high school crush to marry him.

As always, we've also got drinking games to play along with, and a pair of questionably creative sequel pitches to explore just what might have happened after the comet struck. Oceans rose, cities fell... but did hope really survive? Tune in to fund out...

Knowing 2: All Knowing14 Jun 201901:10:13

Somehow, Beyond the Box Set has managed to exist for two whole years without us ever diving into the filmography of the iconic human meme machine that is Nicholas Cage. Fortunately our current disaster movie mini-season offers plentiful opportunities to correct this oversight, so this week - on Harry's suggestion - we're discussing the suspiciously religious-feeling 2009 apocalypse epic Knowing.

Despite garnering dreadful reviews (and deservedly so) this film topped out at over $200 million at the global box office. It stars Cage as a celebrated scientist turned day drinking - and inexplicably night barbecuing - widower who stumbles upon what he believes to be the formula for predicting the end of the world. Rose Byrne and Ben Mendhelson are also in it, but you could be forgiven for not noticing...

Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on whispering Cage vs screaming Cage, the questionable taste levels of appropriating 9/11 for a schlocky Sci-fi conspiracy theory and why shoplifting Blu-rays may be the ultimate in mid-00s petty crime...

Along the way we also come up with some Knowing drinking games - passing out on your keyboard, sofa or gravel path entirely optional - and attempt to follow the questionable logic of the original movie through with some sequel ideas.

Geostorm 2: Dutch Oven 07 Jun 201901:11:34

Gerard Butler and his distractingly thick neck race to save the world from ecological disaster in Geostorm, an instant ironic classic from the screenwriting team behind Independence Day. Featuring bad science, clunky dialogue and plot holes the size of the ozone layer, this 2017 bomb was a must for inclusion in our summer of Disaster Movies.

Join us as we discuss misplaced nationalism, inexplicable timelines, women in bikinis running from frozen tidal waves and the best-worst product placement we've ever seen in a semi-serious movie.

On its much-delayed release in 2017, Geostorm received scathing reviews and tanked hard at the box office, so sadly a sequel is unlikely to ever see the light of day. However, that doesn't deter us from pitching some ideas for the follow-up movie we'd like to see.

Tune in as we discuss gnome wars, emergency lens flare and a truly iconic soundtrack while pitching sequels for this iconic 90s Britcom.

Tropic Thunder 2: Welcome Back To The Jungle 30 May 201901:15:14

Featuring ludicrously OTT gore, Ben Stiller going full r-word and Robert Downey Jr. improbably turning a black face performance into Oscar gold, Tropic Thunder is a Hollywood satire that made us laugh and squirm in equal measure.

Poking fun at the egos and eccentricities of A-list movie stars and powerful studio heads, Tropic Thunder follows a dysfunctional cadre of actors - including a faded action star, an Oscar darling who's a little too committed to the method and a drug-addled gross-out icon - as their attempts to complete production of a high budget war movie in the jungles of Vietnam go horribly off the rails.

The movie cleaned up at the box office and won almost unanimously positive reviews, but not without attracting a level of controversy that might make it a much tougher sell in 2019. In this week's episode, we discuss the thin line between outrageous and offensive, the glorious shade this movie throws towards Eddie Murphy and Russell Crowe, and that unforgettable Tom Cruise cameo...

After that, it's time to pitch our own fantasy sequel ideas, including a movie within a movie within a movie, Tropic Thunder in Space - which is pretty much just Galaxy Quest - and a much-needed effort to redress the notable gender imbalance in the original film.

Boogie Nights 2: Dirk Diggler's Hole-istic Dicktective Agency23 May 201901:28:59

Starring Mark Wahlberg as Dirk Diggler, the well-endowed Golden Child of the late 70s porn industry, Boogie Nights established Paul Thomas Anderson as a major directorial talent, and featured breakthrough performances for megastars including Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, Philip Seymour Hoffman and more - plus the comeback of a lifetime for actual seventies icon Burt Reynolds.

In this week's podcast, we go deep and dirty while discussing the changing face of porn, debate whether anyone would actually want to wield a 14 inch penis, attain possible wig watch nirvana and of course, pitch some sequel ideas to help Wahlberg's Diggler to rise again...

Clueless 2: High School Reunion17 May 201901:27:40

Deceptively smart and, like, totally quotable, Amy Heckerling's Clueless redefined the High School comedy genre in the mid 90s, paving the way for the likes of Mean Girls and Easy A. In this week's episode, returning guest Louise Ball joins us this week to pitch some totally bitchin' sequels...

Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on insane 90s fashion, Tai's questionable past, Christian's possible future as a serial killer and whether or not it's creepy to date your non-biological stepbrother.

We also put together some frat party-friendly Clueless drinking games, essentially quote 90% of the dialogue and attempt to imagine what Cher, Dionne, Josh and the gang might be up to in 2019...
