SEO Title: Beyond The Box Art® Episode 39 | Automotive Modelling, IPMS Competitions & Bolton 2027
Meta Description: Episode 39 explores automotive scale modelling with Rich Middleton and Matty's Custom Scale, IPMS competition advice from Andy Brown, Bolton 2027 and the final IPMS Dispatches.
Hiya Benchmates — Episode 39 has landed!
This time we're finally giving automotive modelling some proper attention.
Joining us are IPMS(UK) President Rich Middleton and our new automotive Stash Inflation reporter, Matty from Matty's Custom Scale, to ask why cars and motorcycles sometimes seem to sit apart from the wider scale modelling hobby — and whether automotive modellers get the recognition they deserve.
More importantly, we look at what aircraft, armour, ship and sci-fi modellers can learn from car builders, particularly when it comes to surface preparation, paint, polishing and achieving those intimidatingly flawless finishes.
Apparently, covering the mistakes with mud isn't always an option.
Dan is understandably concerned.
🚗 Automotive Modelling — Rich Middleton & Matty
Cars, motorcycles, motorsport, commercial vehicles and custom builds represent a huge part of scale modelling, yet they can sometimes feel like a hobby within the hobby.
We talk to Rich and Matty about why that might be, how automotive modelling differs from other genres and the techniques that everyone can take back to their own workbench.
From paint preparation and gloss finishes to metallics, interiors and presentation, there's plenty here even if you've never built a car in your life.
IPMS(UK) Competition Secretary Andy Brown returns to take some of the mystery — and hopefully some of the fear — out of entering a model competition.
We discuss what judges actually look for, common mistakes, presentation and what first-time entrants should consider before placing a model on the table.
With Scale ModelWorld at Telford approaching, Andy also explains why competitions shouldn't simply be viewed as something for elite modellers.
Sometimes the biggest step is simply entering.
🇬🇧 The Final IPMS Dispatches
Episode 39 also marks the final ever IPMS Dispatches, and we're sending it out with the return of Chairman Wong — Paul Wong.
We catch up on IPMS(UK) news, the build-up to Scale ModelWorld and look ahead to the Bolton IPMS Model Show 2027, the UK's largest one-day model show and home show of Beyond The Box Art®.
Brownie will be there.
This time Dan and Shane are coming too.
Bolton has been warned!
But the end of IPMS Dispatches isn't the end of our IPMS coverage.
In Episode 40, we launch IPMS Connect — our new international section bringing together news, people and stories from across the wider IPMS community.
⭐ Stash Inflation Report
The Stash Inflation team are back with another worldwide round-up of new releases and modelling temptation.
Balders covers aviation, Dan tackles armour, Nevs heads to sea, Shane takes care of Gunpla and sci-fi, and Matty brings us the latest automotive releases.
As ever, Beyond The Box Art® accepts absolutely no responsibility for any resulting purchases.
So grab a brew, head to the bench and join Brownie and the Beyond The Box Art® team for automotive modelling, competition advice, IPMS news, new releases and the usual bench-top banter.

Beyond The Box Art® — Episode 38
From Red to Yellow! Heller/Glow2B, DBMK update, VMZ2026 and the Return of a Missing Benchmate!
Hiya Benchmates — Episode 38 has landed!
After joining James Skiffins and Malcolm Childs for a very special farewell to Just Making Conversation in our last episode, we're back to business as usual - though with a little JMC magic thrown in!
Well, as close to business as usual as things ever get around here.
This time, we're catching up with some familiar faces from the modelling industry, looking ahead to an international online modelling competition and welcoming back a member of the Beyond The Box Art® team who has finally managed to escape the clutches of his work roster!
We're joined by Dale Luckhurst, who has swapped red for yellow in his new role as Brand Manager for Heller, part of Glow2B, to talk about his new position and what the future holds for this iconic model kit manufacturer.
Will Packard from DBMK returns to bring us up to speed on developments since the release of their much-anticipated 1/32 Sea Fury earlier this year, including progress on some exciting upcoming projects.
We also welcome Tim Holland from Modellers Without Borders, who joins us to talk about VMZ2026, their second annual online modelling competition, and how modellers from around the world can get involved.
And, of course, the Stash Inflation Report returns with another collection of new releases, aftermarket accessories and completely unnecessary temptations.
But perhaps the biggest surprise of all...
Martin Drayton is back!
Yes, after what feels like an eternity of conflicting work rosters, the planets have finally aligned, and Martin rejoins the Benchmates from his home in sunny Utah.
We were beginning to think he'd changed his phone number.

Beyond The Box Art® — Episode 37
Just Making Conversation — Episode nealry, almost 100ish! with James Skiffins & Malcolm Childs
Hiya Benchmates — Episode 37 has landed!
After heading onto the tabletop with Jamie Tranter and Paul Regan to explore the huge world of wargaming in our last episode, this time we're doing something rather different.
In fact, this episode isn't simply another edition of Beyond The Box Art®.
It's two modelling podcasts sitting down together, sharing a few stories, looking back over nearly six years of broadcasting... and making one last conversation.
We're joined by James Skiffins and Malcolm Childs, the voices behind Just Making Conversation, for a very special joint episode celebrating the show, the friendship behind it and everything that happened along the way.
And yes...
There may be a reason James and Malcolm appear to have arrived carrying their possessions tied inside red-spotted hankies on sticks.
🎙️ Feature Discussion — Just Making Conversation with James Skiffins & Malcolm Childs
For almost six years, Just Making Conversation has been one of the familiar voices of the scale modelling podcast world.
James and Malcolm built a show around something wonderfully simple: two friends talking about models, modelling, life and whatever else happened to wander into the conversation.
Which, when you think about it, is probably how some of the best evenings at model clubs begin as well.
In this special joint episode, Brownie sits down with James and Malcolm to look back at the story of JMC.
We go right back to the beginning and discover why Just Making Conversation started, what James and Malcolm originally thought the programme might become and how that changed once listeners began joining them every episode.

Wargaming with Jamie Tranter & Paul Regan
Hiya Benchmates — Episode 36 has landed!
After heading behind the scenes of Scale Model Challenge with Robert and Margot Crombeecke in our last episode, this time we're turning our attention to another enormous part of the wider modelling world.
We're putting down the instruction sheets, reaching for the dice and venturing onto the tabletop as we explore the world of wargaming.
Whether you're already an experienced gamer, enjoy painting figures and building scenery, or have always wondered what happens once all those armies are finally finished, this episode offers a fascinating look at where modelling, gaming and storytelling meet.
🎙️ Feature Discussion — Wargaming with Jamie Tranter from Hollow Crown Minatures & Paul Regan
This episode, we're joined by Jamie Tranter and Paul Regan for a wide-ranging conversation about wargaming and its close relationship with scale modelling.
We explore what attracts people to wargaming, how someone can get started and whether you really need hundreds of figures, an enormous table and the strategic mind of Napoleon before rolling your first dice.
Jamie and Paul discuss the creative side of the hobby—from assembling and painting miniatures to building terrain, developing armies and creating entire worlds in miniature.
We also look at the social side of gaming, the communities that form around it and the appeal of seeing figures and scenery become part of a much larger story on the tabletop.
Jamie also takes us inside Hollow Crown Miniatures, its distinctive grimdark creations and the work involved in turning an idea into physical miniatures and downloadable digital models.

Inside Scale Model Challenge with Robert & Margot Crombeecke
Hiya Benchmates — Episode 35 has landed!
And after the incredible response to our last episode and the first IPMS Presidents Round Table, we genuinely want to start by saying thank you.
The emails, messages and comments that arrived following Episode 34 have been quite extraordinary. What began as an idea to get national IPMS Presidents around the same virtual table clearly struck a chord with modellers around the world.
Even better, that conversation isn't going to be a one-off.
The Presidents Round Table will return annually, and the invitation is open to all national IPMS Presidents who would like to take part.
But for Episode 35, we're packing our metaphorical bags and heading to the Netherlands...
🎙️ Feature Discussion — Scale Model Challenge
This episode we're joined by Robert & Margot from Scale Model Challenge to take us behind the scenes of one of Europe's major modelling events.
Held in Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Scale Model Challenge has developed a reputation for bringing together an extraordinary mixture of scale modelling, figures, traders, manufacturers, demonstrations and modellers from across Europe and much further afield.
But what does it actually take to put an event of this size together?
Robert and Margot join us to talk about the history of Scale Model Challenge, how the show has grown, what makes SMC different, and the enormous amount of work that happens long before the doors ever open.
We also look ahead to the upcoming show, what's planned, what visitors can expect and why Scale Model Challenge has become such an important date in the international modelling calendar.

Across the Atlantic — IPMS UK & USA Presidents - TOGETHER!
Hiya Benchmates — Episode 34 has landed, and this is one we've genuinely been looking forward to for a very long time.
For only the second time, Beyond The Box Art® joins forces with our great friends at The Scale Model Podcast for another special transatlantic collaboration, bringing together voices from both sides of the Atlantic for what has become a truly landmark episode.
This time, however, we're making a little bit of history...
🎙️ Feature Discussion — The First Public IPMS Presidents Round Table
For the first time ever, the Presidents of IPMS UK, IPMS USA, and IPMS Canada come together publicly for one conversation.
Joining Brownie, Balders, Dan & Shane are Terry Miesle and Geoff Heyland, plus:
• Ian Middleton — President, IPMS UK • John Noack — President, IPMS USA
Together they discuss the future of IPMS, attracting new generations of modellers, supporting clubs and shows, the challenges facing modelling organisations around the world, and why the hobby remains as relevant today as ever.
Rather than a formal interview, this is a genuine round-table discussion between friends who all share the same goal — ensuring scale modelling continues to thrive for many years to come.
There are thoughtful discussions, plenty of laughs, a healthy amount of good-natured banter, and more than a few moments where international diplomacy is tested over plastic kits.

Beyond The Box Art® — Episode 33 Patriot Models, a US Veterans Modelling Charity • Scale Scotland Preview
Hiya Benchmates — Episode 33 has landed, and we've got another packed show full of modelling, community and a reminder that this hobby really can make a difference.
🎙️ Feature Discussion — Patriot Models
For this episode we're joined by the Michael Blalok the US vetran behind Patriot Models, whose looking to recreate a similar organisation to Models for Heroes in the USA.
Patriot Models has become a driving force behind supporting military veterans through the therapeutic benefits of scale modelling, creating opportunities for former service personnel to reconnect, build confidence and find camaraderie through our shared hobby.
We discuss how the project began, the incredible work being undertaken with veterans across the United States, and why plastic kits can become far more than just a pastime.
The conversation explores the powerful connection between modelling and wellbeing, the friendships formed around the workbench, and the positive impact the hobby continues to have on those who have served their country.
It's an inspiring discussion that perfectly captures what Models. Modellers. Meaning. is all about.
⭐ Scale Scotland Preview
This episode also takes us north of the border as we preview one of the UK's fastest-growing modelling events.
The Scale Scotland team joins us to discuss what visitors can expect from this year's show, the clubs, traders, special displays and competitions that make Scale Scotland such a popular fixture on the modelling calendar.
Whether you're planning to attend or simply want to hear how one of Britain's biggest regional shows comes together, there's plenty to look forward to as we take a behind-the-scenes look at everything happening before the doors open.
If you've never visited Scale Scotland before, this may just convince you to make the journey.

Beyond The Box Art® — Episode 31 ResKit with CEO Oleksii Ukhan
Hiya Benchmates — Episode 31 has landed, and this one is unlike anything we've ever done before.
🎙️ Feature Discussion — ResKit: Modelling Through War
For this episode we travel virtually to Ukraine to spend time with one of the most respected aftermarket manufacturers in the modelling world.
Joining us is Oleksii Ukhan, CEO of ResKit, for a candid, fascinating and at times deeply moving discussion about the company's history, growth, innovation, and the extraordinary challenges of running a world-class manufacturing business in an active war zone.
We discuss how ResKit evolved from a small specialist producer into a globally recognised name synonymous with quality, accuracy, and innovation. Oleksii also gives us a unique insight into what daily life looks like for both the company and its staff while operating during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Despite the challenges, ResKit continues to produce some of the finest aftermarket products available anywhere in the hobby, and Oleksii shares the determination, resilience, and spirit that has helped keep the company moving forward.
We also reveal an exciting major announcement from ResKit and bring listeners a world-exclusive look at some of the company's upcoming releases.
This is more than just a modelling interview.
It's a story of perseverance, innovation, community, and the remarkable people behind one of the hobby's most respected brands.
And instead of our normal theme tune at the end - we have changed it for this episode to a piece called: "Stay With Ukraine"...

Saison 2 · Épisode 13
jeudi 4 juin 2026 • Durée 02:47:51
Beyond The Box Art® — Episode 30 Australia Calling! with Sam Dwyer, Scott Taylor (SMS Paint) & John Marley
Hiya Benchmates — Episode 30 has landed, and this one comes with a distinctly Australian flavour running right through it… so there's every chance the stash inflation may need to be measured in kangaroos per square metre!
As June begins, Beyond The Box Art® also proudly celebrates Pride Month and inclusion across the hobby community. Modelling is — and always should be — for everyone, regardless of background, identity, experience, or what happens to be on your workbench. Our special Pride show logo this month is a small but important reminder that the show/Benchmates community is built around respect, support, friendship, and a shared love of the hobby.
🎙️ Feature Discussion — Australia Calling!
For this episode the team head down under for a brilliant conversation with friends of the show from Australia, covering modelling, community, creativity, and how the hobby scene continues to thrive on the other side of the world — even if absolutely everything seems to want to kill you there.
Joining us are Sam Dwyer, Scott Taylor from The Scale Modellers Supply, and John Marley from Peace by Piece, for a hugely enjoyable discussion that bounces between modelling, mateship, mental health, community projects, and the simple reality that scale modellers everywhere are fundamentally the same — just with different accents and possibly more dangerous wildlife!
We also celebrate an incredible milestone for The Scale Modellers Supply as the company marks its 10th anniversary, reflecting on how SMS has grown from a small Australian business into one of the hobby's most respected names worldwide.
Alongside that, John Marley joins us to discuss the fantastic Peace by Piece initiative and the genuinely meaningful impact modelling can have beyond the bench itself.
As expected… things occasionally drift gloriously off course into humour, hobby chaos, and several moments where the team probably should have been supervised.

It's always a pleasure to welcome a familiar voice back to the show, particularly when they've got some exciting news to share.
This episode sees the return of Dale Luckhurst, who has traded the familiar red of his previous role for something altogether more yellow!
Dale joins us in his new position as Brand Manager for Heller, part of Glow2B, and we're delighted to catch up with him for his first interview with us since taking on the role.
For generations of modellers, Heller has been a familiar name in the hobby, producing an enormous variety of subjects across aviation, military vehicles, maritime modelling and automotive kits.
And for many of us, there are probably a few Heller boxes lurking somewhere in the stash that we bought decades ago and still fully intend to build.
Eventually.
We talk to Dale about his move to Glow2B, what attracted him to the Heller brand and how he's settling into his new responsibilities.
We also explore the challenges and opportunities involved in managing a manufacturer with such a long history, an established catalogue and a loyal following among modellers around the world.
What can we expect from Heller in the coming years?
How does Dale see the brand developing?
And what might the future hold for those classic subjects that helped make Heller such a recognisable name in the modelling world?
It's an opportunity to hear directly from someone involved in shaping the future of a familiar manufacturer.
And, naturally, we couldn't possibly let Dale leave without asking whether there might be a few surprises in store for us.
After all, a change of colour shouldn't mean a reduction in the number of kits we feel compelled to buy.
Quite the opposite, probably.
Back in Episode 26, we caught up with the team from DBMK to discuss their ambitious plans and the development of their highly anticipated 1/32 Sea Fury.
Well, the Sea Fury has now made its way out of the development workshop and into the hands of modellers.
So naturally, we wanted to know what happened next!
Will Packard returns to Beyond The Box Art® to bring us up to speed on how things have progressed since the release of the Sea Fury earlier this year.
We look back at the launch, discuss how the kit has been received by the modelling community and explore what the experience has taught the DBMK team about bringing a new large-scale injection-moulded aircraft kit to market.
But, as anyone following DBMK's social media channels will know, the Sea Fury is far from the end of the story.
There are several rather interesting projects working their way through the development process.
Republic F-105 Thunderchief
The mighty Thud is one of the most eagerly discussed subjects among those following DBMK's future releases. We catch up with Will on its development and what progress has been made.
Grumman F11F Tiger
An elegant and distinctive US Navy fighter that has attracted plenty of attention from modellers. We discuss the project and what the team has been working on behind the scenes.
Supermarine Scimitar
A subject particularly close to the hearts of many British naval aviation enthusiasts. We find out how development is progressing and what lies ahead for this much-anticipated project.
There's also a chance to explore what goes into developing a new kit, from the initial design and research through to the engineering decisions that eventually turn a computer model into something we can actually sit down and build.
For those of us who spend our time wondering why a particular aircraft has never been produced in our preferred scale, it's an opportunity to hear about the work involved in making these projects happen.
And, more importantly...
To find out what we might need to make room for in the stash next.
One of the wonderful things about scale modelling is that it brings together people who might otherwise never have the opportunity to meet.
Different countries.
Different backgrounds.
Different modelling interests.
But one shared passion for sticking bits of plastic together and occasionally wondering where that tiny photo-etched part disappeared to.
This episode, we're joined by Tim Holland from Modellers Without Borders to talk about VMZ2026, their second annual online modelling competition.
With the success of their inaugural event behind them, Modellers Without Borders are bringing modellers together once again for an international celebration of the hobby.
And the beauty of an online modelling competition is that geography doesn't have to get in the way.
You don't need to travel hundreds of miles to a convention centre.
You don't need to book a hotel.
And you certainly don't need to explain to your other half why the car is full of model boxes before you've even arrived at the show.
We talk to Tim about how Modellers Without Borders came about, what inspired the creation of VMZ and how the experience of organising their first event has helped shape this year's competition.
We also explore what modellers can expect from VMZ2026, how the competition works, the categories and entry process, and what participants need to know about getting involved.
For those who have never entered a modelling competition before, it's a chance to discover how an online event can offer a different way of sharing your work with the wider modelling community.
And for experienced competition modellers, it's another opportunity to showcase their latest projects alongside fellow enthusiasts from around the world.
But VMZ2026 isn't simply about medals, trophies or who has managed to squeeze the largest number of aftermarket accessories into a single model.
It's also about bringing people together, encouraging participation and celebrating the creativity, craftsmanship and friendship that make our hobby so rewarding.
Whether you're a seasoned competition veteran, a newcomer to the hobby or someone who has never quite plucked up the courage to enter a model into a show, there's plenty to discover.
And the best part?
You can take part without having to transport your latest masterpiece halfway across the country in a box full of foam and crossed fingers.
Of course, while we're busy talking to manufacturers about their latest developments, the rest of the modelling industry has been doing its level best to ensure our bank accounts never recover.
Yes, the Stash Inflation Report returns with another worldwide trawl through the latest releases, announcements, aftermarket accessories and assorted pieces of modelling temptation.
Balders takes us through the latest aviation releases, Dan patrols the world of armour and military vehicles, Nevs heads back onto the high seas, Shane explores Gunpla, sci-fi and everything mechanical, while Matty takes care of cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles.
And with Matty now firmly established as our automotive correspondent, there's yet another member of the team finding completely legitimate reasons why you absolutely need another model kit.
Apparently, having nowhere to put it is no longer considered a valid objection.
Between them, the team once again demonstrates that the modelling industry remains entirely committed to ensuring nobody ever reaches the bottom of their stash.
Expect new kits.
Expect aftermarket.
Expect several entirely unnecessary purchases.
And expect at least one member of the team to explain why something is an absolute bargain despite nobody actually asking.
As always, Beyond The Box Art® accepts absolutely no responsibility for parcels arriving at your home following this segment.
Although we will happily accept the credit.
There are some mysteries in the modelling world that may never be fully explained.
Where do all those tiny parts go when they disappear from the tweezers?
Why does the one kit you really want always seem to be out of stock?
And why is it that every time we try to arrange a recording session, Martin Drayton's work roster appears to have other ideas?
Well, at long last, we've managed to solve at least one of those mysteries.
Martin is back!
Joining us from his home in Utah, our long-lost co-host finally makes his return to Beyond The Box Art® after an extended period of conflicting work commitments.
And while we appreciate that gainful employment is a necessary evil, we were beginning to wonder whether Martin had decided that getting up at ridiculous hours to talk to a bunch of British modellers was no longer quite as appealing as it once seemed.
Apparently, it is.
Or perhaps he's just run out of excuses.
Either way, we're delighted to have him back behind the microphone, catching up with the Benchmates and bringing his usual perspective, experience and humour to the conversation.
It's great to have you back, Martin.
We've kept your seat warm.
Well, metaphorically speaking.
It is a podcast, after all.
Ultimately, this episode is a wonderful reminder of just how much is happening across our hobby.
From an established manufacturer looking towards the future under a familiar new Brand Manager, to a growing kit manufacturer bringing ambitious projects to life, there's plenty going on behind the scenes in the modelling industry.
And with initiatives like Modellers Without Borders and VMZ2026, we're seeing more opportunities for modellers to connect, share their work and enjoy the hobby together, regardless of where they happen to live.
That's something we feel particularly strongly about here at Beyond The Box Art®.
Because while the kits, tools and techniques are undoubtedly a huge part of what we do, it's the people who make this hobby what it is.
The manufacturers who listen to their customers.
The organisers who give up their time to bring people together.
The modellers who share their knowledge and encourage others.
And the friendships that can develop between people who have never actually met in person but feel as though they've known each other for years.
It's also rather nice when one of those friends finally manages to get his work roster sorted out and rejoins the show!
So grab a brew, take your place at the bench and join Brownie, Martin and the rest of the Beyond The Box Art® team as we catch up with Dale Luckhurst, Will Packard and Tim Holland for another episode packed with modelling news, industry insights, community spirit and the occasional completely unnecessary excuse to buy another kit.
Our commercial sponsors help us cover the running costs of Beyond The Box Art®, allowing us to encourage Benchmates who would like to support something financially to consider supporting modelling charities and good causes instead.

We talk about the moments that helped define the show, the subjects and conversations that surprised them, the guests and experiences that stayed with them and, inevitably, some of the things that probably seemed like a very good idea at the time.
There's also a look at something you can't manufacture with microphones, editing software or a clever format:
chemistry.
The friendship between James and Malcolm became a huge part of the appeal of Just Making Conversation, and we explore how that relationship shaped the programme and allowed conversations to travel naturally from serious modelling subjects to complete nonsense—sometimes remarkably quickly.
But this episode also marks an important moment.
After nearly six years of Just Making Conversation, James and Malcolm have decided that the time is right to bring the podcast to a close.
So rather than simply switching off the microphones and disappearing quietly into the distance, we wanted to give them the opportunity to look back properly.
Why now?
What will they miss?
What definitely won't they miss?
What has producing a modelling podcast taught them about the hobby and, perhaps more importantly, about the people within it?
And when James and Malcolm look back on Just Making Conversation in years to come, what do they hope its legacy will be?
It's not a funeral.
Nobody has been asked to wear black.
And we've specifically checked that both James and Malcolm are still alive.
Instead, this is exactly what it should be:
friends sitting around microphones, talking about modelling and remembering the journey.
In other words...
Just Making Conversation.
⭐ Stash Inflation Report
Of course, emotional farewells are absolutely no excuse for allowing your bank account to recover.
The Stash Inflation Report returns with another worldwide trawl through the latest releases, announcements, accessories and assorted pieces of modelling temptation.
Balders takes us through the latest aviation releases, Dan patrols the world of armour and military vehicles, Nevs heads back onto the high seas, Shane explores Gunpla, sci-fi and everything mechanical, while Matty takes care of cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles.
Between them, they once again demonstrate that the modelling industry remains entirely committed to ensuring nobody ever reaches the bottom of their stash.
🌍 Scale Model World Update - with John Tapsall
With 58 days to go when this episode drops until the start of Scale Model World at Telford, we catch up with JT for an update on what to expect.
Ultimately, this episode is about much more than the ending of a podcast.
It's about what happens when a couple of modellers decide to turn on some microphones and start talking.
Conversations become episodes.
Listeners become regulars.
Regulars become friends.
And somewhere along the way, a podcast becomes part of the modelling community it originally set out simply to talk about.
Just Making Conversation has done exactly that.
James Skiffins and Malcolm Childs created something funny, occasionally chaotic, frequently thoughtful and unmistakably theirs.
So we're genuinely delighted that, when the time came to bring that journey to an end, they chose to share the moment with us.
There are stories.
There are laughs.
There are memories.
There may even be the occasional attempt at seriousness.
But most importantly, there are four modellers sitting around talking about this wonderful hobby of ours.
Because sometimes you don't need a grand plan.
Sometimes you just need to start a conversation.
So grab a brew, take your place at the bench and join Brownie, James and Malcolm—and the rest of the Beyond The Box Art® team—as we celebrate nearly six years of Just Making Conversation.
For James and Malcolm, it's the end of one chapter.
But we'd rather not call it goodbye.
After all...
...we're sure they'll still find something to talk about!

Beyond The Box Art® The Scale Modellers Podcast.
Models. Modellers. Meaning.
For scale modellers who have never considered wargaming, there may be rather more familiar territory here than you expect.
After all, we're still building, painting, weathering and occasionally spending far too much money on small pieces of plastic and resin.
The main difference is that wargamers then take their beautifully finished creations into battle...
Which sounds unnecessarily risky to us.
⭐ Stash Inflation Report
Naturally, no episode of Beyond The Box Art® would be complete without the team doing its very best to undermine your financial self-control.
The Stash Inflation Report returns with another worldwide trawl through the latest releases, announcements and upcoming temptations.
Balders takes care of aviation, Dan heads back into the world of armour, Nevs goes nautical, and Shane explores Gunpla, sci-fi and everything else likely to result in another mysterious parcel arriving at the front door.
This episode also sees Matty from Mattys Custom Scale join the team with an all-new look at cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles—because apparently four different ways of emptying your wallet every fortnight simply weren't enough.
Expect new kits, aftermarket goodies, a little enabling and the inevitable phrase:
"Well... I wasn't going to buy one, but..."
We know.
We've heard it before.
Episode 36 is ultimately about one of the things we love most at Beyond The Box Art®—discovering the many different branches of the modelling hobby and the people who bring them to life.
Scale modelling and wargaming may sometimes appear to occupy different corners of the hobby, but they share far more than divides them: creativity, craftsmanship, research, imagination and the simple pleasure of bringing something miniature to life.
Whether your finished models are destined for a display cabinet or preparing to charge across a battlefield, the skills, enthusiasm and occasional obsession behind them will feel reassuringly familiar.
So grab a brew, take your position at the bench and join Brownie and the team as Jamie Tranter and Paul Regan lead us into the fascinating world of wargaming.

Episode 35 is ultimately about something we love doing on Beyond The Box Art® — meeting the people behind the events, organisations and companies that make our hobby what it is.
Shows like Scale Model Challenge don't simply appear for a weekend. They happen because people invest enormous amounts of time, enthusiasm and effort into creating somewhere that modellers can meet, learn, shop, display their work and — perhaps most importantly — spend time with other people who share their passion.
So grab a brew, find something vaguely comfortable at the bench, and join Brownie and the team as we head to Eindhoven to discover what goes into creating Scale Model Challenge.

⭐ Stash Inflation Report
The team's wallets once again take a considerable battering as they round up the latest kit announcements, aftermarket releases and modelling temptations from around the world.
Aircraft, armour, naval subjects, Gunpla and everything in between all come under the spotlight, with plenty of opportunities to add "just one more kit" to the stash.
As always, expect a few questionable purchasing decisions, several enabling comments, and at least one declaration that "I definitely don't need another one..."
(We all know how that ends.)
This episode is more than simply another podcast.
It's a celebration of what can happen when modelling communities work together rather than apart, proving that while our accents, club badges and favourite subjects may differ, we're all united by exactly the same passion for scale modelling.
We sincerely hope this becomes the first of many annual conversations bringing together IPMS organisations from around the world.
So grab a brew, pull up a chair at the bench, and join us for a truly international conversation celebrating our hobby.

The wallets take another pounding as the team rounds up the latest kit announcements, aftermarket releases, accessories and modelling temptations from across the hobby.
Balders gets airborne with the latest aviation releases before handing over to Dan for armour.
Nevs then dives into the maritime world before Shane wraps things up with the newest Gunpla and sci-fi releases.
As always, expect plenty of laughs, several questionable financial decisions and at least one declaration that "I'm definitely not buying any more kits."
We all know how that usually ends...

Following our discussions with ResKit, we are proud to announce our Ukraine Community Support Initiative.
The aim is simple.
Any scale modelling company continuing to operate from within Ukraine during the ongoing war will be offered free promotional and advertising support through the show.
This isn't sponsorship.
This isn't a commercial arrangement.
It's simply our way of supporting fellow hobbyists and businesses who continue to keep our hobby alive under incredibly difficult circumstances.
We hope this initiative helps shine a spotlight on the remarkable work being carried out by Ukrainian manufacturers and demonstrates the modelling community's ability to come together when it matters most.
⭐ IPMS Dispatches
This episode's IPMS Dispatches heads to the South West as we catch up with the team from IPMS Avon.
The branch joins us to talk about their thriving club, their members, and the hugely successful Avon Model Show, which has become one of the UK's premier modelling events.
We discuss what visitors can expect from this year's show, the work that goes into organising an event of this scale, and why clubs like IPMS Avon remain such an important part of keeping the hobby welcoming, vibrant, and community-focused.
⭐ Stash Inflation Report
As always, the team round up the latest releases, aftermarket temptations, kit announcements, and wallet-destroying arrivals from across the modelling world.
From aircraft and armour to ships, sci-fi, and enough aftermarket resin to make your postal carrier question your life choices, the stash inflation continues its relentless advance.
There may also be at least one questionable segue.
Possibly several.
And as always, somebody will almost certainly claim they're "not buying anything else this month."
(History suggests otherwise.)
⭐ Community, Resilience & Why This Hobby Matters
One of the themes that runs throughout this episode is something we've spoken about many times before.
Scale modelling is about far more than plastic kits.
It's about friendship.
It's about creativity.
It's about community.
And sometimes it's about supporting people who are facing challenges far greater than deciding which colour primer to use.
The conversation with Oleksii serves as a powerful reminder that our hobby connects people across borders, languages, and circumstances, bringing together individuals who share a common passion regardless of where they live.
For that reason alone, this may be one of the most important conversations we've ever recorded.
So grab a brew, clear a space on the bench, and join us for a remarkable journey into the story behind one of the hobby's most respected companies.
Beyond The Box Art® is a modelling radio show on the internet focused on:
• Scale modelling interviews and industry insight • Honest discussions about kits, techniques, and trends • Community stories and modelling culture • Supporting modelling charities and hobby growth
Available free of charge — wherever you get your podcasts.
⭐ IPMS Dispatches
This episode's IPMS Dispatches heads to East Anglia as we spend some time with the team from IPMS West Norfolk.
The branch give us a great insight into their club, members, local modelling scene, and the work they do supporting the hobby within the community. We also hear about their upcoming events, club atmosphere, and why local branches remain such an important part of keeping modelling social, welcoming, and alive.
⭐ Stash Inflation Report
As always, the team round up the latest releases, aftermarket temptations, kit announcements, resin wizardry, and wallet-threatening arrivals from across the modelling world.
From aircraft to armour, ships to sci-fi, and more Gundam-related plastic than is probably medically advisable, the stash inflation continues to rise faster than an Australian summer temperature reading.
There may also be at least one questionable segue, a dangerous amount of enabling, and the usual promises that "this is definitely the last kit for a while."
(We all know that's a lie.)
⭐ Pride Month & The Modelling Community
This month also gives us an opportunity to simply say something important:
The hobby is for everyone.
Whether you build aircraft, armour, cars, figures, Gunpla, ships, sci-fi, or something completely impossible to explain to normal people — the bench should always be a place where people feel welcome, accepted, and able to simply enjoy creating.
Beyond The Box Art® remains incredibly proud of the wonderfully diverse global community that has grown around the show, and we genuinely thank every single Benchmate for helping make it such a positive & inclusive place to be.
So… grab a brew, avoid the drop bears, clear a space on the bench, and prepare for another wander into the wonderful world of scale modelling.
