Jackie Wallace was a star at St. Augustine high school and at the University of Arizona. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings and in his seven year career was involved in three Super Bowls.

Ted Jackson spent 34 years as a photojournalist with the New Orleans Times Picayune. This story is what happened when he wandered out of the newsroom on a hot, humid July afternoon in search of a good shot and a story.

Beyond that, I came up with this idea of challenging myself to think about New Orleans through the lens of the alphabet.

I thought this would be a fun challenge for me and a different way of generating ideas about things to do and New Orleans history for you.

In today's episode, we head over to Hansen's Sno-Bliz on Tchoupitoulas Street, in uptown New Orleans. We visit with Ashley Hansen, granddaughter of Ernest and Mary Hansen, and the current owner of Hansen's Sno-Bliz.

Hansen's is the oldest snowball stand in the United States, and is currently open for its 86th season in 2025. In the 1930s, Ernest Hansen created the first machine to shave ice into the snowy powder essential for a terrific New Orleans snowball. That machine is still put to daily use in the shop today!

Mary Hansen ran the business, while Ernest was working as a machinist on the ships docked along the Mississippi. In their later years, the Hansen's ran the snowball stand together. As they got older, their granddaughter Ashley was their to assist, and ultimately to continue the tradition.

Mary Hansen uttered these words frequently, and ran her business by this code. Today, Ashley continues setting the standard, making the syrups from scratch each day, and using the best possible ingredients. Mary's words are all over the shop - on signs and on every plastic cup sold at Hansen's today.

The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) recently did an online tournament where they matched New Orleans music against each other in an NCAA March Madness style bracket they called Music Madness.

People were invited to vote and they published the results online, while also linking to the launch of an online exhibit, called New Orleans Medley: Sounds of the City.

Eli Haddow and Teresa Develin over at THNOC suggested it might be fun if I filled out my own bracket and talked about my selections. I've taken the challenge and covered my initial picks in the last two episodes (#113 and #114).

I recorded this in April 2020. Even if you are listening years from now, this will help you get to know the city better whether you are planning a trip or just wanting to stay connected with New Orleans.

Coastal restoration and finding ways to preserve the Louisiana Coast has been a topic I've wanted to explore for several years. Today, I'm joined by James Karst, Director of Communications at the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana. 

From spirits to hand sanitizer. The world has changed since our last episode just two weeks ago. Today, we're going to talk about how a couple of local New Orleans businesses are working to help the city respond to the COVID19 pandemic.

Join me as I talk with Sal Bivalacqua of Seven Three Distilling and Jess Bourgeois of Lula Restaurant Distillery. These two business owners essentially used their expertise to create a new business in four days, shifting from the manufacture of spirits for drinking to the production of hand sanitizer.

Today's episode is about the story behind Louisiana becoming a member of the Francophonie, also known as l'Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.

The Francophonie is comprised of 84 countries, provinces, and one state (Louisiana) whose membership works together to celebrate and preserve French language and culture.

To help us learn about the Francophonie and Louisiana's role in it, I'm joined by Scott Tilton and Rudy Bazenet.

Scott is a New Orleans native who developed a passion for the French language as a child and led the charge to lobby Louisiana's leadership to apply for admission to the Francophonie.

Rudy Bazenet works in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and partnered with Scott on this project.

In October 1868 dozens of African Americans were massacred in St. Bernard Parish, a few miles downriver from New Orleans.
