New Orleans Music Madness, Part 2 - Episode #114
Épisode 114
mercredi 17 juin 2020 • Durée 42:24
Today's episode is the second of three in a row about New Orleans music.
The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) recently did an online tournament where they matched New Orleans music against each other in an NCAA March Madness style bracket they called Music Madness.
People were invited to vote and they published the results online, while also linking to the launch of an online exhibit, called New Orleans Medley: Sounds of the City.
Eli Haddow and Teresa Develin over at THNOC suggested it might be fun if I filled out my own bracket and talked about my selections. I've taken the challenge and will guide you through selections 17 of 32 first round selections on today's show.

I've taken the challenge and will guide you through the first 16 of 32 first round selections on today's show. We'll cover jazz greats like Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong and more.

Creole Italian Sicilians in New Orleans - Episode #112
Épisode 112
jeudi 7 mai 2020 • Durée 55:42
About This Episode
Today's episode is about Sicilian Italians and their contributions to food culture in New Orleans. I'm joined by author and professor Justin Nystrom who wrote a book called Creole Italian; Sicilian Immigrants and the Shaping of New Orleans Food Culture.
Nystrom's book was nominated for a James Beard Award in 2019 and helps shine a light on New Orleans food history through the lens of Sicilians. We cover the earliest imports of Sicilian lemons to New Orleans, discuss the French Quarter of the mid 1800s forward, and more. You're sure to see New Orleans food in a different light after this one.

Books about New Orleans - Episode #111
Épisode 111
mercredi 22 avril 2020 • Durée 50:25
About This Episode
Today's episode is devoted to books about New Orleans. If you're caught up on Netflix and want to spend some time reading instead, this one's for you.
I recorded this in April 2020. Even if you are listening years from now, this will help you get to know the city better whether you are planning a trip or just wanting to stay connected with New Orleans.
We've done 110 episodes. Talked to many authors. What (I don't think I've done) is give you book recommendations. That's what I'll do today.
Here's what this is not. It is not a top 10 list. It's not a comprehensive list. It's just a list of very good books about New Orleans, across several categories.
For some reason, this topic makes me nervous. Mostly because I am not good about retention and I know a lot of authors!
Let's see how it goes. This might be a recurring sub-series or it might be a one and done!
The World That Made New Orleans: From Spanish Silver to Congo Square, by Ned Sublette
Bienville's Dilemma: A Historical Geography of New Orleans, by Richard Campanella
The Accidental City: Improvising New Orleans, by Lawrence N. Powell
Myth Busting
Bourbon Street: A History, by Richard Campanella
Death in New Orleans
Stories From the St. Louis Cemeteries of New Orleans, by Sally Asher
Tinderbox: The Untold Story of the Up Stairs Lounge Fire and the Rise of Gay Liberation, by Robert W. Fieseler

Spirits to Sanitizer - Episode #110
Épisode 110
mercredi 25 mars 2020 • Durée 45:38
From spirits to hand sanitizer. The world has changed since our last episode just two weeks ago. Today, we're going to talk about how a couple of local New Orleans businesses are working to help the city respond to the COVID19 pandemic.
Join me as I talk with Sal Bivalacqua of Seven Three Distilling and Jess Bourgeois of Lula Restaurant Distillery. These two business owners essentially used their expertise to create a new business in four days, shifting from the manufacture of spirits for drinking to the production of hand sanitizer.
We talk alcohol, hand sanitizer, Bourbon and more in this episode of the Beyond Bourbon Street podcast.
Resources
Check out Seven Three Distilling Company, then be sure to visit when you can. Their website talks about their company name, product offerings, and tour. We'll be doing a Beyond Bourbon Street event there once life returns to normal.
Lula Restaurant-Distillery is a unique place to enjoy excellent cuisine with views of a working distillery. We will work with Jess at Lula to host a Beyond Bourbon Street event in the future.
Both Lula and Seven Three are currently open for to go purchases. If you are in New Orleans, consider placing an order and supporting them.
Here are several articles discussing New Orleans neighborhoods. This is probably worth doing an entire episode about in the future!
Please keep the Old No. 77 Hotel, Liz Wood Realty and 2 Chicks Walking tours in your plans we get through this. And know that, as bad as it is, we will get through this. When we do these businesses will be here to help you once again enjoy New Orleans.
